How To Stand Up For Yourself Without Being Rude - Duration: 5:53.

Hey shy professionals, Myke Macapinlac here and in this video, I'm going to talk about

how to stand up for yourself without being rude

If you are technically skilled like an engineer, programmer or a developer, and you want the

most practical advice on how to become more social, confident, and charismatic, make sure

you subscribe to my channel and hit the bell to be notified when I post a new video every

single week.

Look, I totally understand.

Sometimes, it's easier to just go with the flow to avoid potential conflict.

But if you let people walk all over you, I can almost guarantee you that you will decrease

your feelings of self-worth.

If you don't stand up for yourself, you're basically saying that other people are more

important than you are which is obviously not true.

The thing is, most people often have a false assumption of what being assertive is.

It's not about being aggressive, or mean, or pushy.

From my perspective, assertiveness means taking action towards what you believe in while respecting

the rights of others.

It's a balance between being confident and direct without being a total jerk.

If you're not exactly sure how to do that, don't worry.

Let me share with you my best tips.

Tip #1 Set your boundaries

I've said this many times in the past and I'll say it again.

To get what you want, you have to know what you want.

That's why self-awareness is so important if you want to become more assertive.

You have to define things that are important to you.

If you're not sure where to start, spend some time reflecting and making a mental note of

what you like and don't like.

Begin the process of identifying your core values.

Start making a list of your preferences and put them in order of importance.

Knowing your core values is helpful because you can use them as a filter especially when

you're faced with a difficult situation.

For example, I value ambition and positivity.

So whenever I find myself around people who complain a lot and don't take ownership of

their own lives, I do my best to remove myself from that environment as quickly as possible.

I also make sure to avoid being in that same situation in the future.

Tip #2 See things from another perspective

Whenever you're in conflict with someone, consider where the other person is coming

from.

What do you think their thoughts and feelings might be?

Take into account their situation and what's going on in their lives.

It's hard to get mad at somebody when you see things from their perspective.

If you're not exactly sure where someone is at, you can simply just ask to get more information

before you respond.

Develop empathy and put yourself in another person's situation.

You don't need to agree with them, you just need to understand them.

Be open to new ideas but don't feel like you have to compromise your own values.

Tip #3 Stay calm

It's difficult to make any rational decision when you're emotionally charged.

Nothing gets resolved when you're angry and frustrated.

As hard as it may seem, you have to train yourself to stay calm.

Whenever I'm in conflict with someone, I take deep breaths and if necessary, I reschedule

difficult conversations during a time when I feel more clear-headed.

Do whatever you can to delay your response when you're feeling mad.

Getting angry can make you lose control of your emotional intelligence and is not a good

way to stand or speak up for yourself.

Doing this might lower the way you're seen by whoever you are communicating with and

won't make them listen to you or take you seriously.

Tip #4 Avoid attacking the other person

You can't take responsibility for how other people feel because you don't know what's

going on with them personally.

Not everyone is going to agree with you and you're not going to agree with everyone

and that's okay.

Unless you know you've done something wrong, you shouldn't feel bad for being assertive.

But whatever you do, do not attack the person you're in conflict with.

A good way to communicate when someone's being confrontational is to talk about how certain

things made you feel.

Use "I" instead of "you" in conversation.

For example, you can say "I feel disrespected when this happens" rather than saying "You're

disrespecting me."

It's a subtle shift in the way you communicate that can have a profound impact when you're

talking to someone.

Tip #5 Don't be afraid to say "NO"

How much do you really need to justify, or explain yourself?

Isn't it enough to simply say that since your backgrounds and life experiences are different,

it's only natural that you wouldn't see eye-to-eye on certain things?

Rest assured that without your consent, nobody has the authority to invalidate you and what

you believe in.

Your thoughts and feelings belong to you alone and you don't need to defend that against

somebody else's point of view.

For example, I really value my health.

If someone asks me to do drugs, I have no problem turning down that offer because it's

not something that I see as important.

Say "no" to things that are not in alignment with your core values without feeling the

need to explain yourself.

There you have it.

this 310 mile border has been completely open for 20 years, since the signing of the good friday agreement brought peace to the border

currently there are no hard border crossing points between Northern Ireland and Ireland

with people able to pass freely between countries at the estimated 275 crossing points

the problem is this might not be able to continue after Brexit

forgive me if this seems obvious

but the EU needs strong external borders

the block works by setting rules and tariffs for goods and people entering in

therefore the external borders of the union need to be hard so all people and goods coming into it can be checked and monitored

to ensure they are following the EU's laws

without a strong border anyone or anything could sneak into the EU unchecked

and would effectively inavalidate the EU's tariffs, quotas and laws

similarly if the UK wants to set its own immigration rules and create its own trade deals, it will need hard borders to prevent goods and people from getting in unchecked

you are probably one step head of me here

but having an open border between the EU and UK doesn't work well if both need to have hard borders to protect their policies and economic structures

currently both the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland are in the EU

meaning they follow the same rules and are part of the same block

that means there's no hard border needed in the same way as there is no hard border between France and Germany

however if no deal was reached between the UK and the EU, that would all change

certainly if there was no deal in place, then a hard border would be required between Ireland and Northern Ireland

that's not the EU being difficult or the UK media trying to use scare tactics

that's how international economic relationships work

you have to protect your borders, the fear is that if we put back a hard border between Northern Ireland and Ireland

it could reignite tensions in the area, that's obviously something that noone wants to see happen

Husband forks out £13,500 for wife's confidence boosting 'mummy makeover' - Duration: 9:22.

A woman has revealed how her husband forked out £13,500 on a 'mummy makeover' making her feel confident with her figure for the first time.

Jamie-Louise Fitton, 33, had put on weight after a back condition left her bedridden and in chronic back pain.

But after recovering from an operation, she got a personal trainer and managed to lose four stone.

Her weight loss left her with loose skin, but the mum-of-two from Stockport, Manchester, underwent a tummy tuck and a breast augmentation - paid for by her husband Adrian Fitton, 34.

She said web developer Adrian was her rock, helped her recover and agreed to foot the bill for her weight loss surgery as he could see how 'miserable' she was.

Jamie, who went under the knife in June 2018, said: "Since the surgery, I feel like a new woman.

"This is the first time I've felt confident with my figure and I'm finally comfortable taking my clothes off."

In March 2012, Jamie's weight reached 12st when she was left bedridden while pregnant with her second child, George, five.

Jamie, a nursery owner, said: "Doing anything other than staying still left me in agony as I had horrendous back pain.

"My husband, Adrian, was my rock.

"He helped me get out of bed in the morning and washed my hair in the bath.

"My weight piled on and I struggled to exercise."

In February 2013, weighing 13 stone, doctors diagnosed her with mechanical back failure and chronic pain.

Jamie said: "They said it was incurable and that I could do nothing but take more pain medication.

"I had steroids injected into my spine, codeine, anti-inflammatory drugs and patches.

"I was on 22 painkillers a day and took morphine every night.

"But I was miserable and could barely walk up the stairs without being in agony.

"And being unable to exercise meant that I soon weighed 14 stone and was a size 16."

Soon after, she saw a pain specialist at Tameside General Hospital and underwent an MRI and CT scan to determine the cause of her pain.

This led to her diagnosis of mechanical back failure.

Jamie also had ovarian cysts which added to the pain she was suffering from, so doctors suggested she undergo a full hysterectomy.

She agreed and had the operation in June 2016.

Jamie said: "I have two children but it was heart-breaking to know that I couldn't have more.

"Yet I was in so much pain I was willing to do anything. I would have chopped my leg off if I had to.

"I definitely felt a loss after the surgery, but Adrian supported me completely.

"The recovery was difficult, and at first I felt like I'd been hit by a bus.

"I decided not to let my pain beat me anymore and ditched my walking stick and morphine."

And in September 2016, three months after her operation, Jamie hired a personal trainer and hit the gym three times a week.

Within 18 months, she had lost 3 stone 11lbs from her 14 stone frame leaving her 10 stone 3lbs and a size 10.

And she married Adrian in August 2017.

Jamie then decided to undergo a tummy tuck to tighten her abdominal muscles.

She said: "I spoke to a surgeon who said that the surgery would also remove any excess skin caused by my weight loss, I was delighted.

"I decided to have a breast augmentation at the same time, increasing my cup size from an A cup to a D cup.

"But the surgery cost £13.5K which I couldn't afford.

"Thankfully my husband agreed to foot the bill and took out a credit card to pay for the operation.

"He could see how miserable I was."

And in June 2018, she underwent her mummy makeover with Dr Gary Ross at BMI Alexandra Hospital, Cheadle.

Jamie said: "I knew from the moment I met Gary he was the surgeon for me.

"Gary informed me of what the surgery would entail, the recovery and if it would help my back at all.

"Through every step Gary and his team were always on hand to help and give advice.

"It was a five-hour operation but I went back to work straight away.

"The operation cured my back pain and it's completely changed my life.

"I think Gary is a miracle worker and I can't believe the results he's achieved, he's honestly changed my life.

"Now I have run a half marathon and even worn a bikini.

"Adrian has noticed a huge difference in me and I have never been happier.

"Feeling this way took me a long time and came with a hefty price tag but I wouldn't change it for the world."
