BEST BUDGET SMARTPHONES FOR $200! - SUMMER 2018! - Duration: 7:12.What's up everyone, my name is Ben and today I'm back yet again with another video and
today we will be talking about the best budget smartphones for right around $200 for summer
2018.
Now, these types of videos are my favorite to make.
I always love looking at what companies are able to accomplish as technology progresses
because as we know as technology progresses, prices keep getting cheaper and cheaper.
When I was researching these phones I was very very impressed.
Now the amount of camera performance, specs, battery life, features, reliability and all
that other stuff that you're able to get now in summer 2018 for the price compared to just
a year ago is absolutely mind-blowing.
The progress here is outstanding.
So without a further ado let's jump straight into the video.
The first phone on the list is the Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro, that name is incredibly
long, but believe me, this phone is something special.
The price of this phone is going for just around $215 and in my opinion, you really
cannot go wrong.
This phone ships with Android 8.1 and it will probably get the Android 9.0 update when that
comes out and listen to this.
This phone has the Snapdragon 636 1.8GHz Octa Core processor, it has 6GB of RAM, it has
a dual camera setup on the back, it has an expandable storage option up to 128GB, it
supports dual SIM cards and wait for it...
It has a 4000mAh power battery!
When I was researching this phone I really couldn't believe it.
First off that Snapdragon is absolutely incredible, it'll be very reliable for fast performance,
no lag at all and Android 8.1 really is the greatest, until Android 9.0 comes out.
Also expandable memory, that's incredible, you also have 64GB of space on the phone,
but if you wish to expand there's the option.
The dual SIM card, which is everyone's dream, especially if you're a business owner and
last and most importantly, the camera.
You have a dual camera setup on the back and believe me the camera setup on this phone
for $200 is out of this world.
In my opinion, the Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro is one of the best phones that you can buy
currently, for the price in summer 2018.
Up next we have one more incredible device.
This is the Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1, that name is really really long and hard to remember,
but the phone goes for $185, so for $185 listen to this.
You're getting the exact same processor, so the Snapdragon 636, 1.8GHz Octa Core processor,
you get 4GB of RAM, you get a dual camera setup on the back as well as a fingerprint
sensor.
You also get 64GB of storage, you get the latest and greatest Android 8.1 and this is
a completely stock version.
There's no skin on it, this is just plain old Android 8.1, which means, well this phone
will be incredibly fast.
In my opinion, it will be even faster than the Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro.
Why?
Well, this is a completely stock version of Android and in my opinion, it will be insanely
insanely fast.
And the most important feature out of them all, the 5000mAh power battery.
The phone earlier, the Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro, has a 4000mAh power battery, which well
is mind-blowing.
This one has a 5000mAh power battery and from my experience, you will have this phone turned
on, nonstop for at least 2 days, which means that if you're a medium to heavy user of your
device, it will last you at least a day and a half, if not more.
That's absolutely incredible.
So the Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1 is for $185 in my opinion of the best you can buy this
summer.
The third and final phone that in my opinion, we all need to pay attention to is the Xiaomi
Mi A1, this phone costs right around $220 and listen to this, this phone is powered
by the Android One program.
Android One is basically a program, that supports some of the phones that are being released
today, budget phones, and what Android One guarantees is at least 2 years of updates
and 4 years of security updates.
In my opinion that is absolutely incredible, because we all know the issue, well that if
you buy a phone for $1000, of course, you'll get updates for 2 or 3 years, but if you buy
a phone for $200 you will probably get 1 maybe 2 updates and then the phone will be stuck
in the past.
That's not the case with Android One, you will always have the latest version of Android
available and you'll also have a completely stock experience of Android, plus you'll get
security and regular updates for at least 2 years.
Now the Xiaomi Mi A1 is, well it has a Snapdragon 625 Octa Core processor, it has 4GB of RAM,
64GB of storage, it's expandable up to 128GB via the micro SD card slot and has a beautiful
1080p display.
In my opinion just because this phone is part of the Android ONE program, it's worth the
purchase, not only will you be getting also an insane camera setup on the back, which
is a dual camera setup, you'll also be getting consistent and regular updates and we all
know that as long as your phone is getting updates, you will know that you're not stuck
in the past, that you have a fast and reliable device and you will most likely be lag free
with the Android One or stock Android software.
In my opinion, the Xiaomi Mi A1 is one of the most important devices of this summer,
as well as the past two that I have mentioned, in my opinion, it definitely deserves our
attention.
These 3 devices are what I'm paying my attention to this summer, please let me know what you
guys think if you think I missed some good devices by leaving a comment down below and
mentioning what devices you like, why they're cool, why do I need to pay attention to them.
If you enjoyed this video please consider dropping it a like and I'll see you all, next
time.

50mm Prime Lens For Photography - Best Prime Lens EVERY BEGINNER NEEDS - Duration: 2:13.The 50mm lens should be the first prime lens you own.
It affordable and it will boost your creativity.
Hi, I'm Janet Garcia Trujillo from beaqueenproductions.com.
I'm a portrait and family photographer and in this channel, I teach beginners the basics
of photography and all of the tips and tricks to improve your photography skills.
So, if you are new to this channel, subscribe and hit that bell button to get notified when
I post a new video every Wednesday.
If you are really want to own a prime lens, the 50mm is the one to buy.
This little fella was my first prime lens and it helped me become a better photographer.
There are 3 main reasons why the 50mm is the best prime lens for beginners.
Reason number one, you can capture spontaneous action and your images will be clear and sharp.
Reason number two: You are able to get nice blurry background or in other words a nice
shallow depth of field.
I, personally, LOVE to having a nice shallow depth of field in my photographs.
It's part of my photography style.
It drives the viewer straight to the person or object I want them to focus on.
Comment "ME TOO" in the comments below, if you also love having a nice shallow depth
of the field in your photographs.
Reason number three: it gives you the opportunity to get creative.
Unlike the kit lenses, you can't zoom in or out and stay in one spot.
You have to think fast, think creatively, and move to get the composition you want.
This doesn't mean that kit lenses are useless.
I have a video that explains how and why kit lenses are the best starter lenses for photographers.
The link to that video is below in the description.
Going back to the 50mm, this lens is the best lens for every situation.
With its low light sensitivity and fast aperture - you can do portraits, sports, weddings,
quinceañeras, and other type of photography.
Plus its portable, so all you need is your camera, a good model and the ability to think
outside the box.
That's it.
Those are my three reasons why the 50mm is the best prime lens for photography beginners.
If you like this video, make sure you like it and share it with your friends.
Make sure you subscribe and hit that bell button to get notified when I post a new video
every Wednesday.
See you next week.

How to sign School Grades in American Sign Language for ASL Beginners - Duration: 5:22.Hello, Friends! Today, I'm going to teach signs related to grades in the school...
going through the grades.
This is the sign GRADE. It's a "G" handshape -- the thumb and index finger out,
and go against the opposite palm. You see? GRADE. GRADE. Now what are the grades?
We have preschool. P-R-E SCHOOL.
KINDERGARTEN. It's a "K" handshape: KINDERGARTEN.
Now, elementary school and middle school, has grades 1 through 8...
right? So what do you do? You sign FIRST, SECOND, THIRD, and so on...
plus the sign GRADE. For example...
FIRST GRADE.
Again: FIRST -- the finger twists inward. GRADE.
FIRST GRADE. SECOND GRADE. Third grade, fourth grade, fifth grade...
See how the hand twists at the wrist -- 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, and that
tends to be what's in elementary school, 1st through 5th grade. And then you go
into middle school -- SIXTH, so it's a "6" and it twists inward as well. SEVENTH GRADE,
EIGHTH GRADE. Okay, so again: first grade, second grade, third grade, fourth grade,
fifth grade, sixth grade, seventh grade, eighth grade. Okay?
Now, high school is different. In high school, we have words -- you know: freshmen,
soph... etc., that? In high school and in college, they both have these -- it's those
four years, right? All together four years. Now, we don't do "9th" and "10th"; we
substitute it with... we use the non-dominant -- hand keep that still and
take your dominant palm, and put your palm on each of the other fingers. We
don't use the pinky; you start with the ring finger and like this. See the ring
finger is touching the opposite palm? So that is FRESHMAN. FRESHMAN
Freshman. For SOPHOMORE, we move to the middle finger. That middle finger now is
touching the bottom. SOPHOMORE. See that? Sophomore. JUNIOR. JUNIOR. And senior that
thumb is the top -- senior. Again, all together those four years are... in high
school, you enter and you're what? a freshman. 2nd year: sophomore. Third year:
junior. fourth year: senior. That's -- again that's the same for high school
and college: freshman, sophomore, junior, and senior. Again: freshman, sophomore,
junior, senior.
Okay? So those are the years. We go "through the years" -- we can
sign you "going through the years" like this: "go through the years". If you go
through the years and finish, What do you do? GRADUATE!
The "G" handshape arcs onto the opposite palm: GRADUATE. or GRADUATION.
I have different videos with signs related to graduation, so I suggest you
watch that! And thank you for watching! If you like this video, please subscribe and
I'll see you again soon. Bye!

Indigenous reconciliation: The land is the basis for everything - Duration: 2:11.None of us are from an Indigenous background, and so we – we were really aware
of that and wanted to do it in a way that was anti-racist, that was not tokenizing the
community, and it was – our hope was that it would come across in a real, genuine, authentic
way.
They chose that reconciliation recommendation, it came from South Africa.
It came from the apartheid regime.
So for me, it – it impacted me.
There was – there was a lot of history connection.
I knew about the residential school, but then at a deeper level, understanding how systematic
policies are still present, right, in – in social work and in our – in our communities.
So there's – there's a lot of knowledge that I'm leaving with, and hopefully in the
future we'll be able to make some changes.
I think this topic was important for us as a group because we felt like it
wasn't talked about enough and we – not everyone had heard or understood what unceded
territory meant, and we felt like that was an important topic.
And for me personally, I feel so lucky to be on this land, to have my education on this
land.
All that has happened in the past, when we say the Sixties Scoop, the residential
schools, the Indian Act, prior to that, in high school, I did not know about any of this
and I did not understand the impact and magnitude is has on today and how those processes continue
to be a part of society still, even today.
The more I learn about Indigenous theories, like post-colonial theory, you really
understand that the land is the basis of everything.
And so having the acknowledgment of the land is really the first step in being able to
move forward.

Choosing a microphone for YouTube - BOOM MIC SHOWDOWN (7+ Shotgun & Boom Mics Compared) - Duration: 11:12.Since I've covered a lot of microphones in the past, I get a lot of questions about
the kinds of microphones I haven't really reviewed much - boom and shotgun microphones.
Should you choose one for YouTube, which one should you go with, what's needed to power
them?
I think it's time FOR ANOTHER MICROPHONE SHOWDOWNNNNNNNN!
Tubebuddy is the best tool you can get to manage your YouTube channel.
You can Update videos in bulk, optimize your SEO, syndicate to social media, back up your
metadata and MORE all with a simple browser extension.
Head to eposvox.com/tubebuddy to learn more and download it for free.
In the studio, I currently have SEVEN boom microphones, only one of which I've reviewed
before - the Sennheiser MKH-416.
Three of these are on loan from a subscriber named Pablo - many many thanks for such a
generous loan for me to make content.
Let's start with a simple important question: When should you use a shotgun or boom microphone?
Some people will say to never use them indoors, but I don't find that to be entirely true.
In a room that has tons of reverb and echo and isn't sound treated, a shotgun mic will
not serve you well, they can start to sound warbly or just plain bad or weird.
In that kind of situation, you'll get much cleaner audio out of a shirt-clipped lavalier
microphone or short cardioid boom - though please sound treat your recording sets.
A lav mic is also more useful if you or your video subject or host regularly moves around
out of the direction cone a shotgun mic would cover.
But if you're using a sound-treated set where your host doesn't move away from the
microphone much - like most of my talking head video shoots - a shotgun or cardioid
boom microphone is a fantastic choice.
You can leave it up on a mic arm, positioned to pick up great audio, and not have to worry
about charging a wireless mic, fumbling in your shirt, and so on.
Plus, I just personally prefer the sound of these microphones.
This video is going to focus on REAL boom microphones - big, professional studio microphones
that connect to an audio recorder or mixer via XLR - not the cheapo on-camera mics from
Rode and so on.
The VideoMic Pros, $40 mini shotguns like I reviewed before, etc. are great for quick
and dirty on-camera vlogging microphones, but don't hold up for studio work when your
camera isn't directly in your face.
Here we have the Sennheiser MKH416, Rode NTG-2, Aputure Deity S-Mic 2, Oktava MK-012-01, Audio
Technica AT875R, Azden SGM 1X, and Audix SCX-one.
The Rode NTG-2 was the first high-end mic for on-camera work I ever invested in, having
bought it in November of 2014 right before I made a full-time switch to tech videos.
The Sennheiser MKH416 I've already reviewed and was sent for review and use in my OBS
Master Class.
The Azden was a freebie from a buddie who got it from a local surplus sale.
The Aputure Deity S-Mic 2 is a review unit from Aputure.
The last 3 are on loan from Pablo, he wanted to know what I thought about them.
I wanted to weigh what viewers preferred out of the mic samples, so I uploaded some blind
tests to gather feedback, and I will feature some of those responses in this video.
All of my tests were recorded with the SoundDevices MixPre-3 audio recorder, using the FetHead
Phantom mic pre-amp to help reduce self-noise as much as possible.
These mics require phantom power, and this new version of the FetHead passes through
phantom power to the mic while also providing clean gain to help boost the levels.
I was also recording within a few feet of, and directly facing a Producer's Choice
Sound Blanket to help reduce unwanted noise and reverb.
By far the crowd favorites from that round of testing are the Sennheiser MKH-416, which
was both sample E and G, and the Rode NTG-2.
Followed by the Oktava MK-012, sample A. This makes sense and follows my own preferences.
The Sennheiser is a $1000 microphone - way more expensive than any other in the lot.
It sounds natural and clean, retaining some of the warmth and bass of my voice, while
not sounding quite as boomy as the Rode NTG-2.
The Sennheiser is expensive as heck for YouTube work, but an absolute workhorse and beast
of a shotgun mic.
You can check out my full review for more info.
The Rode NTG-2, on the other hand, is a very bass-friendly shotgun mic.
In fact, it's identified as a condenser microphone, akin to side-address desktop condenser
microphones that many use for YouTube and streaming.
I was incredibly happy with it when I used it pretty much from 2014 to early 2017, due
to how well it picked up the natural bass and deepness of my voice, while still sounding
clean in the right conditions.
It accepts a single AA battery to provide its own self-power, if needed, and doesn't
play well with the FetHead Phantom, but it sounds great.
Some might find it too colored and boomy, however.
The Oktava mic is also described as a condenser mic, a "Pencil condenser" to be exact.
This is usually sold in matched pairs for stereo work, though I'm only working with
one.
It has detachable capsules and you can even integrate different modules in the capsule
chain.
Mine came with an addition for a high pass filter, though I left it flat as with all
of these mics.
I did run into some electrical feedback issues with this microphone, my first couple recordings
with it seemed like they had some grounding issues, but I've not had that issue again,
so maybe the cable was just loose.
This is a short mic designed to be as close as possible to the vocal source, though I
had all mics at the same distance.
As a result, in this position, I feel like it picks up more room reverb than the previous
two mics, but still performs very very well and has a very natural sound.
Very clean, though brighter than the others.
I wouldn't necessarily recommend this if you're going to be at any significant distances
from the camera and microphone, but for indoor vocals you can do some good work with it.
Let's go on and knock out the Azden SGM-1X mic.
This one is quite long and can also be self-powered via a AAA battery, touting up to 1000 hours
of life from one battery.
It has a super cardioid pickup pattern, but it just… doesn't sound great.
It had some popularity for a while due to its price - $150 to $170 for a proper shotgun
microphone is a decent deal, the cheapest in this lot along with the Audio Technica,
but it's just… ehhhh.
It sounds muffled and compressed as if I'm talking behind something, and has a LOT of
hiss and self-noise.
Meanwhile, the Audio Technica AT875R for virtually the same price new sounds LEAGUES better.
It has much much less self-noise, if any, sounds very clear, if a bit focused on the
low end.
It's shorter and picks up a little more reverb, but for a budget microphone I would
definitely put a strong recommendation behind this one.
It doesn't stand out as anything special, but it sounds great and in most cases you
certainly won't get any viewer complaints about your audio quality.
The last of the mics from Pablo is this Audix SCX-one with a hypercardioid capsule.
This is another short microphone designed for vocals and instruments aimed at keeping
a low noise floor.
I'm told this microphone is supposed to be a "poor man's Schoeps CMC641" - I
haven't used that mic, but listening to some samples of it, I guess I can see it?
In my testing setup for the blind samples, it wasn't directly close to my mouth, and
not being a shotgun mic meant it picked up a bit more reverb and hiss once I normalized
the audio up.
Hopefully in this test setup that has been somewhat alleviated.
I really like how this microphone sounds overall, I just need to keep it closer to avoid some
of that reverb pickup, which can be a problem in some of my shooting scenarios.
And lastly we have a late entry to this project, the Aputure Deity S-Mic 2, a new shotgun microphone
from Aputure.
This supercardioid shotgun microphone has no self-power options nor a high pass filter,
but sounds pretty good for the price.
I feel like it's not as clear in the high-end as my MKH-416, but still provides a natural
sound, even when you start getting off-axis, which is not super common.
It doesn't have the most focused directional cone of pickup, it picks up the most reverb
in this shooting environment of all the shotgun mics I tested, sounding more like the cardioid
booms, oddly enough.
But for the price, this would definitely be a good starting point I'd recommend people
go with if you have a budget around $350.
So… final recommendation time.
First, you need to choose between a shotgun microphone, lavalier microphone, or a short
boom cardioid microphone.
If you plan on moving around a lot or have a shooting environment that can't be treated,
a lavalier microphone might be your best bet.
If you're shooting outdoors or indoors with a good amount of distance from your subject
to the mic and camera, but in a sound-treated environment without a lot of reverb, a shotgun
mic is a great choice.
If you're able to keep the mic close to the speaker, you'll be VERY satisfied with
the audio results from it.
Though honestly, I prefer the flexibility you can get from quality shotgun mics instead.
If you have a smaller budget, I'd recommend the Audio Technica AT875R boom mic or Rode
NTG-2 shotgun if you can go up a bit more in price and have a high quality recorder
or pre-amps.
Or if you want to hunt used deals, you can get the Oktava MK-012 cheaper than any of
these.
If you have a ~$400 budget, the Audix is a decent choice, though I'm not sure of the
upgrade value over the cheaper models, and the Deity S-Mic 2 provides more flexibility
in that price range.
Or if you can drop 1000 buckaroos on a mic, using the Sennheiser may make you never want
to go back, like me.
It's just amazing.
There you have it.
Seven shotgun or boom microphones, all possible choices for YouTube audio work or small productions
- except maybe the Azden.
Avoid that one.
Affiliate product links for all of these microphones will be in the description as always.
Super duper thanks to Pablo for loaning me some of these to check out, and thanks to
those who gave feedback on the blind tests!
I'll probably have individual reviews of the Rode NTG-2 and Deity S-Mic 2 on the channel
in due time.

Risks and Protections for Black Girls' Receipt of Out-of-School Suspensions - Duration: 18:13.Hello and welcome to the online module for Risks and Protections for Black Girls' receipt
of Out-of-School Suspensions.
This module presents the results of a quantitative analysis of statewide data from the Minnesota
Linking Information for Kids (Minn-LInK) project.
And, a qualitative study of out-of-school suspensions among Black students, aged 11-17.
My name is Ndilimeke Nashandi, I am a PhD graduate research assistant.
Our project team at the University of Minnesota, School of Social Work includes Minhae Cho,
Ph.D candidate and graduate research assistant, Young Ji Yoon, PhD graduate research assistant,
Priscilla Gibson, Professor in the School of Social Work, and Wendy Haight, Professor
and Gamble-Skogmo Chair.
We are grateful for the financial support of the Gamble-Skogmo endowment and Federal
Title IV-E funding through the Minnesota Department of Human Services and the Center for Advanced
Studies in Child Welfare.
Overview of this module.
This module has two parts.
In part one, we will provide an overview of racial and gender disparities in out-of-school
suspension rates in Minnesota.
In part two, we will discuss Black girls experiences with out-of-school suspensions in an urban
school in the Midwest.
In part three, we will discuss the implications for intervention.
Learning objectives.
This module has three learning objectives.
We expect you to learn about one, the significance of exploring Black girls' out-of-school
suspension, two, Black girls' self-awareness and consciousness concerning the intersection
of racism and sexism, three, your own practice, especially intervention efforts to effectively
address the problem of racial disparities in out of school suspension.
Now, why do child welfare workers need to learn about racial disparities in out-of-school
suspensions?
Suspensions can negatively affect children's well-being, health and academic achievement.
In Minnesota, Black students bear the brunt of these negative consequences even though
they are no more likely than other groups of students to engage in unsafe or rule breaking
behaviors at school.
In other words, they are more harshly disciplined than White students for the same misbehaviors.
Research shows that out-of-school suspensions as a standard practice to deter students'
misbehaviors is largely ineffective in deterring inappropriate behaviors.
Although the suspension of Black boys has been an issue of concern, less attention has
focused on Black girls.
Nationally, Black boys are suspended at a rate three times higher than the rate for
White boys, but Black girls are suspended at a rate six times higher than the rate for
White girls.
To effectively address the persistent problem of racial disparities in out-of-school suspensions,
it is important that we develop prevention and intervention efforts to work with caregivers
and educators.
Now, let's look at research sites and participants.
In our research, we focused on children who received an out-of-school suspension.
In part one, in order to examine whether there are racial and gender disparities in out-of-school
suspension rates, we conducted quantitative analyses.
This study used a secondary dataset from the Minnesota Linking Information for Kids (Minn-LInK)
project.
The sample was 60,827 7th graders, enrolled in Minnesota public schools.
We extracted a sub-sample of 3,326 of the 7th graders suspended in the academic year
2009 to 2010 for this study.
Part 2.
In order to explore the experiences of Black girls, we conducted a qualitative study.
The site of this study was a large, urban school in the Midwest.
Black students who received an out of school suspension during
the 2012-2013 school year
were referred by school administrators.
11 parents and educators of all Black girls with suspensions, also agreed to participate
in the study.
We will now turn to the methods section.
To explore whether there are racial and gender disparities, the Minnesota Automated Reporting
Student System (MARSS) in academic year 2008-2009 was linked to Child Protection Services,
MARSS was also linked to out-of-home placement records from DHS Social Service Information System
and court records from the judicial branch.
To explore Black girls experiences we audiotaped, semi-structured and individual interviews
conducted in a private location in participants' homes or schools.
Interviews were conversation-like with story starters such as, "tell me what happened
to cause your suspension."
In the case of parents we asked, "tell me what happened to cause your child's or your
student's suspension."
Interviews were transcribed verbatim and coded inductively.
I will now present part one, quantitative analysis results.
To conduct a descriptive analysis of the quantitative results, we calculated the racial disproportionality
indexes named RDI.
RDI refers to the ratio of the proportion of suspended students from the subgroup and
its proportion in the general population.
For instance, an RDI of 4 indicates that this subgroup is represented in out-of-school
suspension at 4 times its rate in the general population.
Now let's look at the receipt of out-of-school suspension in 2009.
This table is presenting descriptive analysis results.
Of the 7th graders, 5.5% received out-of-school suspensions in academic year 2009.
While the proportion of male and female students in the entire sample was similar, the majority
of suspended students were male, which was 71.2 percent.
Most students were White students, followed by Black, Hispanic, Native American,
and Asian students.
The proportion of receiving free or reduced price lunch was more than double of non-suspended
students in suspended students, and attendance rate was higher in the non-suspended group
than the suspended group.
The proportion of participating in individualized education program was more than three times
of the non-suspended group in the suspended group.
The proportion of students with emotional and behavioral disabilities was much higher
in suspended students.
Academic achievement was more successful in non-suspended group than in suspended group.
This table presents the disparity of out-of-school suspensions by race.
You will see that the RDI of Black students is 4 times that of other groups in the general
population.
Native American and Hispanic students are also overrepresented in out-of-school suspension,
while White and Asian students are underrepresented.
This table presents the disparity of out-of-school suspensions by race and gender.
We can see in red that Black students have the highest RDIs, in both gender groups.
Namely, for female Black students 3.2 and for male Black students 4.7.
Based on this quantitative analysis result and the fact that there is relatively little
previous research focused on Black girls, we conducted a qualitative study to provide
missing foundational data about Black girls' out-of-school suspension.
Part two presents the results of how Black girls and their parents described the behaviors
for which girls were suspended in contrast to educators, by showing an exemplar for each
result.
I will read the result and give you time to read the exemplar on your own, before I transition
to the next slide.
Result one.
Black girls suspensions result primarily from a break down in relationships with adults
at school.
Result two.
Black girls characterized educators as viewing them negatively and behaving towards them
in ways discrepant with their self-perceptions and experiences in their communities.
Result number three.
They described experiences of educators ignoring or minimizing their calls for help, especially
around issues of verbal harassment, as "Black girl drama".
Result number four.
Black girls also described a policing of their physical appearance, expressiveness of their
communications and silencing of their voices.
Result number five.
Black girls also described protective factors such as parents, teachers and a community
of other Black girls who encouraged positive behaviors.
Result number six.
Black girls describe coping and resisting negative effects of out-of-school suspensions.
I will read this one.
One girl said, "I should make sure like who I hang out with, if they're a bad or
good influence on me.
I'm trying to stay away from them now, because they were always getting conflicts with people
and getting in trouble a lot.
I think he (the educator) was disappointed in me, because it was my first time also having
an OSS ."
This part three presents our conclusions of the results and implications for interventions
and practice work.
From a Black feminist perspective, these results suggest that Black girls are pathologized
in school, in ways that undermine their psychosocial development and educational success.
They also highlight Black girls' self-awareness and critical consciousness concerning the
intersection of racism and sexism, and their resistance to it.
These data are consistent with the literature indicating that Black girls are subjected
to a multiple forms of oppression.
Now, what ways can child welfare agencies and professionals do to improve racial disparities?
By focusing on Black girls, support groups for girls to foster critical consciousness
and promote positive peer support for school success.
Increase educators awareness of the intersection of race and gender on out-of-school suspension
and decide how it affects their own practice and school policies.
As agencies and professionals, we can create corners in school where girls can have "me
time" to debrief individually.
We can also introduce school hours where students and educators can showcase diverse cultural
heritage and create cultural awareness.
This slide presents the references for our work.
Congratulations!
You have completed the module about risks and protections for black girls' receipt
of out-of-school suspensions.
Thank you and have a good day.
