Is Vacation Recreation?
Part 1 of 3
A couple of weeks ago, I heard a sad story and the story was a report that
within two or three days when people get back from vacation, they already feel like the
positive effects from their vacation have already worn off.
So, by Tuesday or Wednesday, they practically feel like they need another vacation.
And so what happened in this sad case?
Taking the time off, sacrificing, the planning that goes in to the vacation, the money spent
during the vacation...and people feel like they need another vacation or, even worse
yet, a vacation FROM their vacation because their vacation created too much stress, which
is the thing they're trying to avoid in the first place.
And I think what happens is, we try to do certain things, we try to please certain people
instead of actually taking time for recreation.
See, if we feel scattered at the end of our vacation instead of like we came to a head
and a bigger piece of the whole picture...in other words, RE-CREATING means you're creating
someTHING.
So, what are we creating?
Well, I think the goal of vacation is to feel more fulfilled...not just temporary happiness.
Happiness only lasts for a couple hours; your brain can only make enough chemicals to keep
you happy for a couple of hours.
So I think truly what we're TRYING to get to is a state of fulfillment.
But I think even more specifically, we're trying to take all the little pieces of our
lives, and we're bringing them to a big whole picture....and that is INTEGRATION.
This struck me a couple years ago, I had to write it down.
Integration: "The coordination of mental processes into a normal effective personality."
Wow, wow!
Do we want to be normal or abnormal?
Do we want to integrate or not?
Do we want to be scattered or do we want to be "whole"?
