Waching daily Nov 4 2017

Hey guys! Welcome back to my channel. Today we are going on a journey together

we are going to dye my hair. If you guys have been watching me for a while, either

on one of my previous channels or on my vlog channel, you know that I have

probably had most natural hair colors under the sun. I have had extremely dark

hair that was borderline black; I have had platinum blonde hair; multiple levels

of brown in between, and I have ventured into the more unnatural colors when my

hair was blonde on bits and pieces of my hair. I don't think I ever dyed my entire

head of fun color. But I think out of all of the colors I've ever colored my hair,

my favorite of all time was red. Deep down inside I want to be a redhead so

badly. I have wanted that my entire life. This is my natural hair color

I haven't colored it for probably a few years now if I play in the Sun enough it

actually pulls a little bit red but I alas I'm not a redhead but today that

changes we are going to make new redhead so like I mentioned I have actually

colored my hair red in the past when my hair was red I could not take a shower

without it bleeding out a little bit and I think that's a pretty typical

experience for most people who are not natural redheads but there is one way to

get red hair and have it not fade over time and that way is coloring your hair

with henna it is considered probably one of the most permanent colors you can

color your hair and that's actually exactly why I wanted to give it a try

I want the red hair back but I don't want it to fade

that's where Hannah comes in for those of you who don't know henna is literally

just ground-up leaves henna comes from the plant called

lawsonia inermis I'm probably butchering that name but that's where it comes from

and it has been used for thousands of years for body art and to color your

hair it is not capable of lifting your hair color you will not be able to

bleach your hair with henna it can only deposit color so it essentially stains

your hair so you can't be super super dark brown and color your hair with

henna and be strawberry blonde that's not really how it works it can only

deposit color it can only stain your hair color but because of that it's

actually a really healthy way to color your hair and

I have never colored my hair with henna before so we are going to learn together

let's get started so the hemant that I'll be using today is by light Mountain

natural this is just in the color red you can identify it because of the Fox

on the front I personally got this henna off of Amazon and I really like that

because it comes in a three pack for like a grand total of about fifteen

dollars I recently saw one package of this particular henna brand at a health

food store and it was going for like eight bucks a package so I think I got a

pretty good deal this particular brand of henna is linked in the description

bar below if you want to go check it out but no matter what kind of henna you're

using no matter what brand make sure you read the ingredients label because you

only want one ingredient in your henna and that is pure henna this ingredient

box only has law so Nia inner mess in it which is pure henna leaf powder that is

exactly what you want if you are coloring your hair with just henna light

Mountain natural actually makes henna blends so depending on which box you

pick up from this particular company you might notice that it has henna in it as

well as indigo or cassia all of which are completely natural dyes that are

just prominent in nature and have been used for thousands of years to dye

clothing and skin and hair but in this case because I'm wanting a red

I just want henna and of course no matter what henna you're using make sure

you read the instructions instead of water as the mixing medium I will

actually be using tea this is because tea has a lower pH it's a little bit

more acidic and because it does have a lower pH than pure distilled water it

will actually give your hair a more golden hue versus a more burgundy hue

I'm going for the golden hair look so that's exactly what I want but if you do

want a more true red color or even a more burgundy or deep purplish tone I've

linked a couple recipes in the description bar below where you can

figure out how to achieve that when you're mixing up

Hanna I'm also squeezing the juice of a whole lemon into my tea just to add a

bit more acidity again for the golden tones that I'm aiming for then when I'm

ready to go I'm just going to mix my henna with the tea that I brewed the

consistency that I was aiming for was kind of a really thick pancake batter

consistency or like kind of stirred up yogurt and then when everything was all

mixed together I just covered it with some saran wrap and pressed it against

the surface of the henna mixture so that way no moisture could escape in order to

activate and actually dye your hair henna has to kind of sit and basically

cure for a couple hours I let my bowl sit for about three or four hours once

it was done I actually went upstairs and grabbed a little bit of leftover hair

from my hairbrush and just applied the henna to it and wrapped it in a bit of

saran wrap just to see kind of what color I was gonna end up with I let that

sit in a warm place for another two and a half or three hours and rinsed it up I

was pretty happy with the color that I was gonna be getting from my strand test

so I went ahead and started to get my battle station ready I laid down towels

everywhere because henna is notoriously messy and this particular henna

recommended you apply it on clean towel dried hair so I took a shower

i shampooed my hair and I dried it just a little bit i sectioned my hair off and

I applied some lotion to my hairline and around my ears and on my neck so that

way the henna wouldn't stain my skin in those areas and then I just started

painting it on whenever I dye my hair I like to focus

on the roots because I find that roots are kind of the hardest spot to get from

me so I started with the hardest spot which was basically at the nape of my

neck little by little I took tiny sections

and painted the roots for just a couple inches or so down the length of my hair

and basically repeated that process all over my head it's kind of hard to

describe so I just recommend watching this bit

when my roots were all done I was not about to paint the entire length of my

hair with that little brush so I just put on some gloves and I went to town

literally plopping it on the length of my hair and running it through with my

fingertips it was much faster this way and I recommend doing it that way

with the leftover henna that was left in the bowl I kind of massaged it through

my hair just to make sure everything was really supersaturated then I wrapped my

hair up on top of my head with a bit of saran wrap wrapped it up in a towel and

I actually just went to bed making sure that my pillow was covered with a towel

beforehand just in case I had any accidents all right so it is 10:30 in

the morning now I started the dyeing process at about 9:30 last night and

then I just went to bed I tried to sleep on it but it was so heavy and awkward on

my head to the egg I ended up getting a lot of neck pain as I was trying to

sleep throughout the night so I got up and took a shower and rinsed everything

out at about 12:30 or 1:00 o'clock in the morning so the henna was sitting on

my head in my hair completely saturating it for about three to four hours which

is plenty long enough to get color payout so so this is the color that I

ended up with after about eight or nine hours later the funny thing about henna

is that the full true color of the henna itself and how it will stain your hair

doesn't actually start to appear for at least a couple days after you dye it so

even right now it's a little bit orange in spots particularly up by my scalp

because I'm sure my scalp got stained a little bit the skin staining will fade

after a few days and at the same time the color will develop an even deeper

color so like I said this is a few hours after the dyeing process this is the

color that I've ended up with so far we're gonna check in in a couple days

and see what the color looks like then okay so this is a couple days after I

have colored my hair you can see that my roots are a little bit oily I have not

actually washed it with shampoo since I've colored it I have taken showers

since I've colored it I've rinsed everything out with a little bit of

conditioner and some just warm water but I haven't actually washed it with soap

yet just because I wanted to make sure that the color was settling as it should

and I'll probably actually take a shower tonight with shampoo and we'll see how

the color payout is tomorrow but so far I'm actually really really happy with

the color payout I love the color I have gotten so far and

roots are definitely a lot less orange which is fantastic I even colored my

eyebrows a little bit which might look a little bit orange because I actually did

them a day after I handed my hair so there's still a little bit more orange

here than there is compared to my scalp but now my eyebrows match my hair so I'm

happy with that we'll probably do one more update once I wash my hair so we

can kind of compare colors once everything is complete but this is after

three days of not washing it after henna in it and this is the color payoff okay

so I think this is the final update for my hair this is what it looks like after

I didn't wash it yesterday but the day before yesterday so it has been

shampooed my scalp is no longer a weird orange color and I honestly really

really like the color that I've ended up with it's a lot warmer but it still

looks pretty natural I've noticed barely any bleeding in the shower at all I

think what I have noticed is just a little bit coming out when I was like

shampooing it out for the first time and I haven't noticed it since which is

amazing my hair finally smells a little bit more neutral something that I didn't

expect when dyeing my hair with henna was that it smelled a little bit like a

barn for a little bit it now no longer smells like a barn which is amazing yeah

so this has been my henna experience my first time dyeing my hair with henna

like I said I'm really happy with the results you guys can feel free to follow

me on my vlog channel which is linked in the upper right-hand corner and also in

the description bar below if you kind of want to see the updates and how it looks

from here on out in a more candid kind of way be sure to check out all of the

resources that I provided in the description bar below if you want to

also dye your hair with henna I've linked the Amazon link where I purchased

the henna that I used really really happy with it so I hope you guys will be

as well I hope you guys enjoyed this video and I will see you next time bye

But mom you were such an amazing ballerina

I'm in ok just go like this with your arms, and hop on your legs like this

My favorite night. I'm your biggest fan. Oh

That was rude. They're here to prepare for the shield of Valor ceremony tomorrow. What's the shield of Valor?

It's a special award. We give to someone for being very brave, which Knight is getting it daddy none of them

Whoa look at her go. I hope he doesn't hurt yourself. I worry more about the knight to say

You tamed the dreadful dragon of Dashwood that's why your aunt is getting the shield of Valor

Whoa I know right very impressive, but turns out that dragon wasn't so if I ever made him

Oh, don't worry, Tilly. You'll find that special someone and he'll be great just like you Oh that'll be whiz-bang

Tilly shouldn't you be facing forward then how will I see what's behind me?

Why thank you my night not so shining armor

instead scorch oh

It's silly isn't it no it's sweet. No, it's

See you later dad wait

Don't give up sir Bartleby. I think you should just tell aunt Tilly how you feel. I'm afraid. I can't bear that princess Sofia

If you won't talk to Italy why don't you sing to her huh my singing voice is even worse than my talking voice

Hmm, I'll turn my problem into a song and have sir Maxwell sing it'd only hilf right behind this spot

Then I'll stand over here

Sir Maxwell can you do a favor for sir Bartleby?

What kind of favor my lady we need you to sing well in that case?

Conky quit it also friend again wants me to do is sharpen this and shine that

It's boring, and I'm not even good at it

Oh, I suppose you thought being a knight was nothing more than riding around in a horse first

Yeah, but you can't do any of that without a well saddled horse and clean armor

And if you're wondering why Sir Finnegan is being so tough on you

Here you are you silly I couldn't find you anywhere Oh?

Your ladylove approaches time for me to hide

Here's your surprise aunt Tilly sir Bartleby has a song. He'd like to sing for you

You write backwards on a horse or that you taught her to raggin tune it

Instead of school is this about me, so did you really mean all those things you saying well

So Bartleby rip the song well sir Bartleby was this some kind of it. I'm sorry sir Bartleby

Perhaps a little fencing practice will take your mind off things

Don't worry, I'll think of another way to help you with aunt Tilly and the dancing shoes. There's going to be dancing tonight

Yes, it is come on. I'll teach you the real real move your feet like this see ha brakes have let

Sure our dancing is the perfect way to have fun with Aunt Tilly without saying anything go sir Bartleby

But that's ok this is what I have to do if I want to be a great Knight one day oh

You're absolutely right?

Ready now, but I'll do it anyway

Now's your chance why I'd love to

My card you light on your feet. Did you say something?

Oh

Well

little prayer hurts

Where is my armor right here sir I?

Meant why isn't my armor on me?

Impressive work, I'm ready for the ceremony

Where you're the bravest of the brave, so they say do you fight

Oh curse and Giants and who knows what else if you were brave enough to do all that then I know you can be brave

Enough to tell aunt Tilly how you feel I dare

Duchess

Matilda

I

Wanted to tell you how I feel

but I didn't because well because I was afraid of what you'd think of my voice I

Bet if I may it would be my honor to give you a tour of

Enchanted Forest

Sometime why wait for Salkin sir Bartleby?

Sir Bartleby, I thought you preferred riding shields good point I

Mean she looks like aa until he found her special someone, but he does have an odd voice I didn't notice

Crystal of the Week with Heather Askinosie | Energetically Prepping Your Home for the Holidays - Duration: 18:29.

Hi I'm Heather Askinosie with Energy Muse and I just want to say thank you for joining today

and watching this because I know everybody is really busy and I know there's so many

things to do on our fabulous planet.

So thank you for taking time to invest, I hope this information will be of help to you.

I know it's something that I'm playing around with and it's been helpful to me.

And with the holidays coming, the holidays alone always just bring up stuff.

Regardless of how long you've been on this journey, how long you've been working on yourself,

I know I've been doing this over 25 years and every time I you know get to the holiday

season, when I'm at family events and even though I love my family a lot you know one

still can get triggered or things come up from the past or what not.

So how do we use crystals to help us through the holidays, well I am one of those people

that I like to have crystals in my house and have it a bit more, as it's part of the environment,

it's not you know in your face.

So whenever I have people over for the holidays I like to put some crystals on my table and

use that kind of like an altar maybe in that kind of case where I will put, I'll set my

table but I'll put some very earthy type energetic stones to not only ground the space, but maybe

ground the conversation, to make sure that energy of what's happening is very fluid and

that nobody gets caught in old patterns and you know not that we can control all that,

but if we could use the beautiful world of energy and the Earth to help us through the

holiday season why not?

What I'm really liking a lot lately is to use these petrified wood.

And these are these plates that we got and you know, I know they're a little bit pricey

in the fact that they're above $50, but they are magnificent because you can use them in

a couple ways.

Some people are using them as an actual cheese platter which is kind of cool but another

way that you can use them is putting them as a centerpiece or in the center of your

table because this has a really grounding energy and plus it just looks really cool

and it adds a lot of nice decor to the table but what I like to do is to hold a piece and

once again give your crystal a job and just say I really want this to hold the intention

of being grounding and having harmonious conversations around the holiday table and that everything

is fluid and everybody is getting along which is really really what makes a great dinner

right?

So I like to use that and what I sometimes do is I will use that as a focal point and

then I'll put other crystals around it.

So for this is that once again using a quartz crystal, I highly suggest that everyone has

some kind of crystal point for this upcoming holiday season and once again give your crystal

a job where you think your intention wants to be, but one suggestion would be you know

my intention is to keep the energy clear, make sure that the conversation stays very

positive and upbeat and if anything comes that is uncomfortable that we all communicate

openly and it moves on and the day is blessed and joyful.

And then I'll put that on the petrified wood.

Now I always like to add the flowers because I am a big person about bringing in the plants.

Because I think plants have medicine, I think flowers have medicine and I personally like

to bring in the white roses because they help to purify an environment.

So for those of you that have got our book Crystal Muse, there is a chapter in there

about how you could use, it's in the Love Guru chapter, it's about how do you use white

roses to purify a bed after a broken up relationship?

So it's that same kind of concept where you're using the energy of the roses to help purify

the environment and space.

Once again just on the white roses, if someone has been sick or somebody, there's been some

kind of energy in the house that's heavy after you've saged and done all the bells and sounds.

Sometimes it's nice to put white roses into the house just to kind of purify and bring

in that floral medicine.

Very powerful.

I don't know about you but I am just loving these flowers too.

So anything that has that kind of fall energy invoking the spirit of the flowers, that medicine

of the flowers and bringing that on the table.

So this is coming soon, I'm in love with this it's amber, it's raw amber it should be on

our site probably by the end of the week.

Amber is a beauty stone.

For all you women out there who really want to tap in not only to your exterior beauty

but your inner beauty.

It's a stone that has a reputation for beauty but it's also a very protective stone.

And it helps to break up energy, so once again programming it, giving it a job, may our conversation

be blessed, may we be protected, may higher frequencies align our dinner table.

So amber is a beautiful stone that you could use in multi different facets.

Definitely for protection, when you're wanting to work on inner beauty because beauty does

come from the inside and bringing beauty into your holiday season.

Once again you make a minor grid on top of the petrified wood.

So those are couple things, tid bit I know you guys already know this but I just, it's

so important I want to keep going at it.

Always sage your environment before the guests arrive and sage your environment after the

guests leave.

You want to make sure that's a really important component and what I like to do, two little

things that are really important, I also around the holidays want to make sure I bring the

sweetness in, So I will burn sweetgrass after I sage and another really cool little tip

is putting some hot water on the stove in a big pot and adding a couple pieces of cinnamon

to the water.

Sometimes I'll add a couple little pieces of clove, but I'll add maybe 3 or 4 cinnamon

sticks and what you do is you let the water boil and then you bring it to a simmer and

then what that does is it makes your home harmonious, the energy of cinnamon is very

calming.

I know it has a spicy kind of scent to it, but it brings this very kind of soothing calming,

everyone's fun and joyful and playful.

So you're bringing, once again, in the spices too.

We're bringing all the elements in, the Earth, the flower, the spices.

So lots of different ways where we can bring all the energies into our environment for

the holidays to help us be harmonious and stable.

Bring it all in, it's one of those times a year that you got to have as many tools as

possible.

So are there any questions?

"What would the crystals be that you recommend to bring to someone else's house you're visiting

during the holidays as like an offering or a gift?"

In this particular case because I do think crystals are amazing, more and more people

are using them for home decor just because they're beautiful and they have an energy,

so I always like to maybe keep it with white quartz crystal, you could always bring maybe

pink, you know rose quartz, but the thing is cool with the quartz crystals is it's white,

it usually will go with pretty much anyones home decor, it's all about being clear, it's

about keeping positive and light and just clarity and during this time as a hostess

gift everyone wants to be clear, everyone wants to tap into their inner light, I think

quartz crystal is a really good go to stone for the holidays and great for holiday gifting

to hostess gifts.

"IF you're bringing a crystal like with you, sort of like for protection, when you're going

in to someone's house house, like not necessarily that you're going to give away.

Is there anything different that you would recommend?"

Is the protection for you while you're visiting your friend or party.

wow whew!

Okay that's a deep question, wow alright so you're wanting to take protection with you

to go to a party.

I like to always wear amber, so I'll wear amber on my wrist or amber on my neck or sometimes

carry a piece of amber I think it's a really good protection.

Once again black tourmalines are great for protection, black onyx are also a really good

stone for protection if you just want to have an extra shield of energy around you because

I do agree with you that during the holidays there's a lot of energy going on and it does

create like a barrier an extra shield, but after you go back from a holiday party that

there's been a ton of people, you know take a salt bath or a salt shower and scrub yourself

with some salt to just clear your energy field.

"Can they put sage in a spray bottle for smokeless environments?"

You know what that is an amazing, I love that because more and more people, not everyone

can go and smudge an environment so once again with that if you are taking sage and putting

it in water, always remember to ask that the spirit of the sage infuse the water with cleansing

and purification.

It's really important I think right now more than ever.

We've got to remember that we are connected even though this is a flower it's got a spirit

we all have energy and so we need to connect with that spirit and align with it, and ask

it for it's medicine and not just assume that it's going to do.

The whole point of this is connecting with that energy so I love adding the sage and

asking for the sage spirit to be infused with the water to help purify and cleanse when

you spritz it.

Beautiful thank you for asking that and suggesting that.

"I'm hosting Christmas dinner for my family this year, and I would love to know how I

can stay in my own energy - I tend to get really wrapped up in everyone else's energies

and end up completely drained."

You know what I think that's such a great question because when you're hosting, hosting

alone is you want everyone to have an amazing time and there's so many details when you're

hosting an event with the food and environment and making sure everybody has, everyone's

coming in so there's a lot of pressure with that.

Once again, before all of this it's really important for you to set the tone of your

space, so I'm going to say it again, when you are saging your home or when you're setting

your table with the crystals, really put that intention out, hey this is going to be one

of the best holiday dinners we've every had with our family, we're going to be grounded,

I'm going to be in my space, I'm going to allow everyone to be who they are I'm not

going to take things personally, I'm going to just love my family and I'm just going

to be like, you know what? we're all who we are and I'm going to come from a compassionate

space and I'm going to be appreciative that we're all here together alive and that we

all came together.

Life is busy, people are busy, so that when we can come together with our families and

good friends and even just have time together, that is sacred.

No matter how much chaos and karma and history we all have, the person holding the space

of this event, they're in a very powerful position in the way that you will set the

tone.

So set the tone that you're going to own your own energy and everyone's going to come in

and it's going to shift this year.

That's why we work with all this stuff.

That's why we work with the energy.

These are tools, tap into them now more than ever and see how these holidays are different

than other holidays because of the intention and how you showed up and then how you created

that environment and had other people show up in a different way.

This is how we create the change, we really are powerful, we just have to take the time

to acknowledge it that we can create amazing events at the holidays.

"How can I cleanse my home of negative energy other bring, as well how can I cleanse myself,

people tend to talk to me about their problems and I feel like my good energy, and luck are

gone?"

What I love about you is that people feel safe enough around you that they feel like

they could be vulnerable with you and that they trust you enough where they can share

because so many people want to talk but they don't always feel safe with everyone so in

that way look at the blessing and the gift that you have, that people feel safe to talk

to you.

Once again with all of that it's about how you show up, he look I'm going to be someone

who's going to listen, but you don't necessarily need to take it on so once again I'm going

to go back to the book, if you guys have not bought Crystal Muse yet there is a chapter

all cutting the cord that I think is amazing and if you haven't seen that chapter highly

recommend looking at that it's about not taking on anybody else's energy how to cut the cords

with others with light and love and send it back to them.

But a very powerful chapter in this book and the feedback we've been getting is that people

have been doing this ritual and it's really really helping them.

Highly suggest maybe taking a look at that chapter.

"How do we warmly welcome guests and also how can we bring love and light by blessing

our guests?"

When you're hosting you guys set the environment and if you think about how do you want to

be welcomed into somebody's house.

You just want to feel comfortable.

I think that sometimes the best parties are, the best places that I've ever gone haven't

been the places that have had the most money and the most lavish ness, it's just I walked

in and I felt like, god I felt like my heart, I felt at home I felt comfortable I felt happy

and I knew that the people who invited were happy to have me there and I was happy to

be there.

There really is an exchange of energy when you go to somebody's house so what is a really

nice thing is everybody gets together before you eat by blessing the food.

Blessing all the things that took to get that food on the table, the farmers and all the

different people that went into preparing, I think that maybe going back to some of these

like, taking the time for us to be grateful not just to be grateful for oh hey we're grateful

for our friends and our family and our health, those are important things but let's even

take it deeper, grateful for the food that we're eating and the farmers that made it

and the people that brought it to our table, the people that went and shopped for it.

I just think there are so many levels and the more we go deeper into that gratitude

it's infused with the rest of the people in the group, but we just did a retreat in Kauai

and it was very important that every meal was blessed and I literally I think everyone

can agree that was on that retreat the food tasted different after we made that time to

bless it.

"Are there any crystals that you would use that are like welcoming for like in the doorway,

or in certain rooms?"

I'm really into right now, once again this can change so don't hold me to it, but right

now today I'm really into having rose quartz at my front door.

So I have black tourmaline on the exterior side of my doors and I have rose quartz on

the interior side, so that once someone walks in if they make it through the protection

wall, they will walk into an energy of love, so right now I feel like for me that's very

simple, it's an affordable way to bring crystal into your life, and you could feel an energy

shift with that.

These are a couple techniques on how to use crystals in your home for the holidays.

Please let us know how these are working for you, if you've tried any of these we love

feedback.

I just want to say once again our crystal community and the people that are really just

supporting the energy of the Earth right now and are just talking about these conversations

that before maybe we weren't all talking about are people feeling safe and comfortable to

talk about so thank you for being leaders, thank you for trusting Energy Muse as being

a voice and a guide and somebody on the road with you.

We're really grateful and thank you for all your support and I'm Heather Askinosie with

Energy Muse.

Namaste

Episode 1118 | Preparing For The End Of Life - Duration: 13:48.

>> TALKING ABOUT DEATH USUALLY FILLS PEOPLE WITH DREAD BUT

GAIL RUBIN, YOU SEE IT AS A WAY TO CELEBRATE LIFE.

THANKS FOR SITTING DOWN WITH NEW MEXICO INFOCUS.

>> GREAT TO BE WITH YOU.

>> YOU CALL YOURSELF THE DOYENNE OF DEATH AND YOU'RE A

BREAST CANCER SURVIVOR.

HOW DID THAT EXPERIENCE TEACH YOU CELEBRATING LIFE IS

IMPORTANT EVEN WHILE YOU'RE PLANNING FOR THE END OF IT?

>> WELL, LET ME EXPLAIN WHAT A DOYENNE IS.

A WOMAN WHO IS CONSIDERED SENIOR IN A GROUP WHO KNOWS A

LOT ABOUT A PARTICULAR SUBJECT AND A LOT OF PEOPLE DON'T KNOW

THAT BECAUSE IT IS A MORE FOREIGN TERM.

FACING BREAST CANCER REALLY PUTS YOU IN TOUCH WITH YOUR

MORTALITY AND THEN YOU REALIZE, I REALLY DO NEED TO

MAKE THE MOST OF EVERY SINGLE DAY AND WHEN YOU DO THAT, YOU

CAN BE MORE PRESENT IN THE MOMENT AND REALLY CELEBRATE

YOUR LIFE.

AND IT IS IMPORTANT TO.

AS FAR AS WE KNOW, THIS IS THE ONE LIFE THAT WE HAVE.

SO, LET'S CELEBRATE IT AND BE HONEST ABOUT TALKING ABOUT THE

FACT THAT WE'RE NOT ALWAYS GOING TO BE HERE ALL THE TIME.

IF YOU FELL OFF THE FACE OF THE PLANET ONE DAY, WHICH YOU

WILL -- >> WE ALL WILL.

>> -- WHAT KIND OF MESS ARE WE GOING TO LEAVE BEHIND?

WE HAVE OUR FINANCIAL ISSUES.

WE HAVE WHAT DO WE WANT DONE WITH OUR LIFELESS CARCASS.

WHAT HAPPENS TO OUR LOVED ONES?

LESS THAN 30% OF US DO ANY END OF LIFE PLANNING AND THAT

MEANS WHEN WE DIE, 70% OF THE LOVED ONES ARE SCRAMBLING TO

PULL TOGETHER INFORMATION AND MAKE EXPENSIVE DECISIONS UNDER

DURESS OF GRIEF.

AND IF WE JUST TALK ABOUT THESE THINGS, IT WON'T KILL

US.

WE CAN HELP OUR FAMILIES.

>> WHAT ARE SOME OF THE ISSUES OUR LOVED ONES WILL FACE IF WE

DON'T PLAN AHEAD?

>> WELL, FIRST THING IS WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO WITH YOUR

BODY?

USUALLY IT IS CREMATION OR BURIAL, BUT THERE ARE

EXPANDING OPTIONS.

YOU CAN DONATE YOUR BODY TO SCIENCE AND GET A FREE

CREMATION DOING THAT.

THERE IS FUNERAL PLANNING AND HOW ARE YOU GOING TO CELEBRATE

YOUR LIFE?

THERE ARE SO MANY PEOPLE WHO SAY, DON'T HAVE A FUNERAL FOR

ME WHEN I AM GONE.

>> I HAD A FRIEND WHO DID THAT RECENTLY.

>> IT IS SO CRUEL TO THE PEOPLE WHO LOVE YOU AND WHAT I

SAY IS, IF PEOPLE DIDN'T LOVE YOU, DON'T WORRY, THEY

WOULDN'T GO TO THE TROUBLE.

AND, SO, LET PEOPLE KNOW WHAT WOULD BE A NICE WAY TO

CELEBRATE YOUR LIFE.

WE ALL HAVE OUR PASSIONS, WE ALL HAVE THINGS THAT WE ARE

KNOWN FOR AND THOSE ELEMENTS CAN MAKE A REALLY MEANINGFUL

GOOD, GOODBYE.

THERE IS ALSO FINANCIAL ISSUES.

YOU KNOW, PEOPLE SAY, OH, I DON'T OWN MUCH.

IT WOULDN'T BE A BIG PROBLEM.

IT IS OKAY IF YOU KNOW WHO IS GOING TO GET WHAT AND MAYBE

YOU HAVE GOT A WILL TO DICTATE THAT, BUT YOU CAN ALSO GET A

TRUST TO PASS THOSE THINGS ALONG TO KEEP THINGS OUT OF

PROBATE COURT AND I AM NOT A LAWYER SO DON'T TAKE THIS AS

LEGAL ADVICE BUT THESE CAN BE COMPLICATED ISSUES AND IF YOU

DIE ONE DAY WITHOUT HAVING LAID OUT ALL YOUR PASSWORDS

FOR YOUR ONLINE ACCOUNTS AND ALL OF YOUR ONGOING

SUBSCRIPTIONS AND SOCIAL MEDIA, YOUR FRIENDS ON

FACEBOOK ARE GOING TO GET YOUR BIRTHDAY ANNOUNCEMENTS EVERY

SINGLE YEAR UNTIL -- UNLESS SOMEBODY HAS ACCESS OR KNOWS

HOW TO MEMORIALIZE YOUR FACEBOOK ACCOUNT.

>> THE TAG LINE OF YOUR BOOK IS FUNERAL PLANNING FOR THOSE

WHO DON'T PLAN TO DIE.

WHY DO YOU THINK SO MANY PEOPLE ARE AFRAID TO TALK

ABOUT THE END OF LIFE.

YOU JUST LAID OUT GOOD REASONS WHY WE SHOULD, BUT WHAT

PREVENTS IT?

>> BECAUSE IT IS A REALLY UNCOMFORTABLE TOPIC AND THERE

ARE SOCIOLOGICAL STRUCTURES AS TO WHY WE AVOID IT BUT

BASICALLY BECAUSE WE ARE AFRAID OF NOT BEING ANYMORE.

IT IS A TOPIC THAT TERRIFIES US.

IT IS THE TERROR MANAGEMENT THEORY IS WHAT IT IS

OFFICIALLY CALLED.

RATHER THAN BE UNCOMFORTABLE AND THINKING ABOUT THE IDEA OF

NOT BEING AROUND, WE JUST DECIDE TO AVOID THE TOPIC AND

THAT IS TO OUR OWN DETRIMENT AND OUR FAMILY'S DETRIMENT.

AND MY MOTTO IS JUST LIKE TALKING ABOUT SEX WON'T MAKE

YOU PREGNANT, TALKING ABOUT FUNERALS AND END OF LIFE

ISSUES WON'T MAKE YOU DEAD.

>> WE HAVE MANY DIFFERENT CULTURES IN NEW MEXICO

INCLUDING SOME OF OUR NATIVE AMERICAN TRIBES WHERE IT IS A

MAJOR TABU TO TALK ABOUT DEATH.

HAVE YOU BEEN ABLE TO ADAPT YOUR MESSAGE FOR DIFFERENT

COMMUNITIES?

>> YOU KNOW, I USE HUMOR AND FUNNY FILMS TO BREAK DOWN THE

RESISTANCE TO TALKING ABOUT THIS.

AND I HAVE COLLECTED A NUMBER OF FILM CLIPS FROM AFRICAN

AMERICANS AND HISPANIC AND EVEN SOME NATIVE AMERICAN FILM

CLIPS BUT AS FAR AS BEING ABLE TO PRESENT THEM TO THOSE

SECTIONS OF OUR POPULATION, I HAVE NOT ACTUALLY HAD MUCH OF

AN OPPORTUNITY TO DO THAT BUT I WOULD WELCOME THE

OPPORTUNITY.

BECAUSE WHEN SOMEBODY IS SICK AND IN THE HOSPITAL,

ESPECIALLY OUR HISPANIC COMMUNITIES, ALL OF THE FAMILY

COMES THERE TO BE WITH GRANDMA OR MOM OR WHOEVER IS IN THAT

HOSPITAL BED SO THEY WANT TO BE THERE FOR THEIR FAMILIES

BUT THEY DON'T WANT TO TALK ABOUT OR THINK ABOUT OR EVEN

PLAN AHEAD MOSTLY FOR WHAT COMES NEXT.

AND, PART OF THAT IS WE ARE SO INVESTED IN OUR MEDICAL

COMMUNITIES HEALING US AND MODERN MEDICINE HAS MADE

INCREDIBLE STRIDES TO SAVE OUR LIVES BUT THESE BODIES ONLY

LAST SO LONG AND CAN ONLY SAVE US A CERTAIN NUMBER OF TIMES.

PART OF IT MIGHT BE ACTUALLY LOOKING AT HOW THE MEDICAL

COMMUNITY ACTUALLY APPROACHES TREATMENT.

THEY GET PAID THE MORE THEY DO AND OFFERING THAT HOPE THAT,

WELL, WE COULD DO THIS AND IT COULD EXTEND THEIR LIFE, BUT

IT COULD ALSO MAKE THEM PHYSICALLY MISERABLE AND JUST

TORTURE THEM LONGER BEFORE SOMEBODY ACTUALLY DIES.

>> IT'S CERTAINLY THE ECONOMIC STRUCTURE OF OUR MEDICAL CARE

SYSTEM BUT ALSO GIVING PEOPLE HOPE.

DO WE NEED TO CHANGE SOMETHING IN OUR HEALTHCARE SYSTEM TO

OPEN UP MORE OPPORTUNITIES FOR DOCTORS TO HAVE THESE

CONVERSATIONS?

>> ABSOLUTELY.

HERE LOCALLY, DR.

AROOP MANGALIK, HAS RECENTLY WRITTEN

A BOOK CALLED "DEALING WITH DOCTORS, DENIAL AND DEATH."

AND HE TALKS AT LENGTH ABOUT HOW DO WE HAVE OUR DOCTORS

TRAINED TO BE MORE REALISTIC ABOUT PEOPLES' HOPES, WHAT THE

MEDICAL ESTABLISHMENT CAN DO FOR THEM AND HONESTLY LAYING

OUT WHAT YOU'RE OPTIONS ARE FOR FACING END OF LIFE.

DO YOU WANT TO BE COMFORTABLE AT HOME?

AND, YOU KNOW, THE USAGE OF HOSPICE IS PHENOMENALLY SHORT

AND IT COULD BE SO MUCH BETTER.

IN FACT, THERE ARE STUDIES THAT SHOW THAT PEOPLE WHO ARE

FACING AN END OF LIFE, TERMINAL DIAGNOSIS, RATHER

THAN PURSUING AGGRESSIVE CARE, ESPECIALLY IN CANCER

SITUATIONS, IF THEY CHOOSE HOSPICE AND LESS AGGRESSIVE

INTERVENTION, THEY ACTUALLY LIVE LONGER AND BETTER LIVES,

WHILE THEY ARE STILL ALIVE.

SO, I WOULD LOVE TO SEE MORE PEOPLE TALKING ABOUT HOSPICE

AND EXPLORING WHAT THAT IS AND MEDICARE TAKES CARE OF HOSPICE

CARE.

>> IT IS ALSO A MATTER OF TRAINING DOCTORS TO BE

COMFORTABLE DOING THIS.

THEY ARE TRAINED TO SAVE LIVES.

>> TRAINED TO SAVE LIVES, SO DEATH IS SEEN AS A DEFEAT.

WE LOST.

WE LOST THE PATIENT.

AND, WE ARE NOT LOSING, WE ARE TRANSITIONING.

THIS IS PART OF THE NATURAL LIFE CYCLE.

WAYNE DYER HAD A GREAT QUOTE ABOUT LIFE ITSELF, SAYING IT

IS A SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED TERMINAL CONDITION.

>> YOU ALSO HOLD REGULAR EVENTS THROUGHOUT THE YEAR

AROUND THESE THINGS CALLED DEATH CAFES.

>> THE DEATH CAFE MOVEMENT CAME TO US FROM THE UNITED

KINGDOM WHERE THEY ALSO STARTED THE BEFORE I DIE

FESTIVAL MOVEMENT AND I HAVE BROUGHT BOTH OF THESE HERE TO

ALBUQUERQUE.

IN 2012, I HELD THE FIRST DEATH CAFE IN THE U.S. WEST OF

THE MISSISSIPPI AND THIS IS AN OPPORTUNITY FOR PEOPLE TO COME

TOGETHER HAVE A LITTLE COFFEE OR TEA, SOME CAKE OR COOKIES,

SOME NOURISHMENT, TO LET YOU RELAX, AND THEN TALK ABOUT

WHATEVER IS ON YOUR HEARTS AND MINDS ABOUT MORTALITY ISSUES.

>> DO PEOPLE DO THAT?

THEY DO. AND, REALLY, THERE ARE FOUR

AREAS THAT ARE PRIMARY TOPICS THAT COME UP; FINANCIAL

ISSUES, SPIRITUAL ISSUES, MEDICAL ISSUES AND MATERIAL

ISSUES.

WHAT IS GOING TO HAPPEN TO MY STUFF.

BUT I HAVE ALSO HAD GREAT STORIES ABOUT NEAR DEATH

EXPERIENCES, WHICH CONVINCED ME THAT THERE IS SOMETHING

BEYOND THIS PHYSICAL LIFETIME, JUST AMAZING STORIES OF PEOPLE

WHO HAVE BEEN CLINICALLY DEAD AND COME BACK TO LIFE AND HAVE

THESE AMAZING EXPERIENCES THAT THEY RELATE SEEING THEIR

BODIES IN THE HOSPITAL WHILE THEY GO SOMEWHERE ELSE.

AND, THEN COME BACK.

AND THEN THE BEFORE I DIE FESTIVAL IS ALSO AN

OPPORTUNITY TO DO ALL SORTS OF ACTIVITIES TO OPENLY THINK

ABOUT AND TALK ABOUT AND THEN HOPEFULLY DO SOMETHING ABOUT

OUR MORTALITY.

>> WHAT DO YOU THINK TALKING ABOUT -- OR WHY DO YOU THINK

TALKING ABOUT THE END OF OUR LIFE NOW MIGHT HELP US ENJOY

OR LIVES WHILE WE ARE HERE?

>> IT JUST OPENS THE DOOR TO REALIZE THAT TODAY IS THE DAY

THAT WE HAVE.

TOMORROW IS NOT PROMISED.

THE PAST, YESTERDAY IS HISTORY.

SO, THE BUDDHA ACTUALLY EXPRESSED THIS IN TERMS OF

RELEASE YOUR ATTACHMENTS.

YOUR ATTACHMENTS BECOME BAGGAGE AND IF YOU'RE HAULING

AROUND OLD GRUDGES, IF YOU'RE BUILDING UP ALL SORTS OF STUFF

IN YOUR HOUSE, DOWNSIZING IS ANOTHER THING I HAVE GOTTEN

INTO.

YOU CAN, THEN, FOCUS ON THIS PRESENT MOMENT WHICH IS ALL

THAT WE REALLY HAVE AND WHEN YOU'RE FOCUSED ON THE PRESENT

MOMENT, YOU CAN REALIZE, WELL, I AM NOT GOING TO BE HERE FOR

EVER.

I THINK I BETTER TAKE CARE OF ALL THESE MANY THREADS OF MY

LIFE.

SO THAT WHEN I DO CHECK OUT, MY LOVED ONES WILL HAVE AN

ORGANIZED IDEA OF WHAT THEY NEED TO DO TO CLOSE DOWN THE

ESTATE AND DO SOMETHING WITH MY BODY.

>> YOU HAVE A DRAFT OF YOUR OWN OBITUARY ON YOUR WEBSITE.

WHY ARE YOU ENCOURAGING FOLKS TO WRITE THEIR OBITUARY.

>> WHEN I WAS FIRST WRITING MY FIRST BOOK.

A GOOD GOODBYE FUNERAL PLANNING FOR THOSE WHO DON'T

PLAN TO DIE, MY FATHER-IN-LAW WAS MY TEST CASE FOR PLANNING

AHEAD.

I NEVER PREPLANNED A FUNERAL FOR ANYBODY.

I WAS AMAZED HOW MUCH INFORMATION WE NEEDED AND

DIDN'T HAVE, WAS GLAD HE WAS ALIVE TO PROVIDE THAT

INFORMATION.

WHEN I WAS DISCUSSING THIS WITH MY IN-LAWS OVER DINNER

ONE NIGHT, HE WAS, OH, YEAH, I'LL GET YOU THE FAMILY

HISTORY AND MY SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER AND VETERANS PAPERS AND

I AM GOING TO WRITE MY OWN OBITUARY.

I THOUGHT THIS IS GREAT.

MY MOTHER-IN-LAW, SHE DIDN'T WANT TO TALK ABOUT IT, DIDN'T

WANT TO THINK ABOUT IT, BUT WHEN HE DIED, WHICH WAS THREE

YEARS AFTER WE HAD PLANNED AHEAD FOR HIM, THAT WAS THE

ONE THING HE DIDN'T DO, DID NOT WRITE HIS OWN OBITUARY.

TAKING CARE OF ARRANGEMENTS WAS QUICK.

WE WERE DONE IN AN HOUR WHICH IS SPEEDY.

ONCE YOU PUT THE INFORMATION ON FILE AND SET THAT UP AND WE

SPENT THE MOST TIME JUST SKETCHING OUT SOME KIND OF

OBITUARY AND IT WAS NOT GREAT BECAUSE WE WERE, YOU KNOW,

THIS WAS AFTER SEVEN WEEKS OF SCHLEPPING BACK AND FORTH TO

THE HOSPITAL AND BEING UP UNTIL MIDNIGHT THE NIGHT

BEFORE WHEN HE DIED.

AND THAT IS NO TIME TO WRITE AN OBITUARY.

SO TO BE ABLE TO WRITE OUT WHAT YOU'RE PASSIONATE ABOUT

WHAT YOU FEEL IS YOUR BIGGEST ACCOMPLISHMENTS, OF COURSE,

THE PEOPLE THAT YOU LOVE, THAT YOU WOULD LIKE TO NAME IN THE

OBITUARY, BUT, REALLY, SOME OF THE BEST OBITUARIES I HAVE

SEEN REALLY CAPTURED THE SPIRIT OF THE PERSON.

AND THAT IS BEST WRITTEN BEFORE ANYBODY IS SICK OR

ANYBODY HAS DIED.

>> ACTUALLY SOUNDS LIKE A GOOD EXERCISE ANY TIME IN YOUR LIFE

TO EVALUATE WHAT IS IMPORTANT TO YOU.

>> WHAT AGE WOULD YOU SUGGEST PEOPLE DO THIS?

>> YOU KNOW AS SOON AS YOU'RE AN ADULT, AGE OF 18.

AND THEN YOU CAN REVISIT IT EVERY BIRTHDAY AND UPDATE IT

WITH WHATEVER YOU HAVE EXPERIENCED IN THAT PREVIOUS

YEAR.

>> GAIL, THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR COMING AND TALKING ABOUT THIS,

APPRECIATE IT.

>> THANK YOU.
