What's Up for November?

Your binoculars will come in handy this month--

to view the moon, star clusters,

and a close pairing of Venus and Jupiter.

Hello and welcome! I'm Jane Houston Jones from

NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California.

You can't miss bright Venus in the predawn sky.

This month Venus pairs up with Jupiter

on the morning of November 13th,

as they did in 2015 and 2016

when the two planets appeared a little closer than this year.

You'll have to be looking very low

on the east-southeast horizon

about 45 minutes before sunrise.

But protect your eyes!

[crunch-click]

Don't aim your binoculars directly at the sun

and don't look at the approaching sunrise

with your unaided eyes or telescopes.

[whoosh]

There are three meteor showers this month,

but none of them will present high numbers of meteors

at their peak.

The Leonids peak on a moonless November 17th.

Expect no more than 10 meteors an hour around 3:00 a.m.,

the height of the shower.

The Northern and Southern sub-branches of the

Taurid meteor shower offer sparse counts

of about 5 meteors per hour,

but slow, bright meteors are common.

The nearby November Orionids peak on the 28th,

In contrast to the Taurids, the Orionids are swift.

But don't expect more than 3 meteors per hour.

[whoosh]

The moon glides by three beautiful star clusters

in the morning sky this month,

and a pair of binoculars will allow you to see

the individual stars in the clusters.

Aim your binoculars at

the Pleiades and the moon on the 5th,

the Messier or M-35 cluster and the moon on the 7th,

and the Beehive cluster and the moon on the 10th.

Meanwhile, at dusk, catch Saturn as it dips closer

to the western horizon,

and pairs up with Mercury on the 24th through the 28th.

Comet C/2017 O1, discovered only in July by the

All-Sky Automated Survey for Supernovae,

came close to the sun in October, and should still be

a binocular-friendly magnitude 7 or 8

greenish object in November.

Use Polaris, the North Star as a guide.

Look in the East to Northeast sky in the late evening.

You can find out about all of NASA's missions at: www.nasa.gov

That's all for this month. I'm Jane Houston Jones.

A Toolkit for Implementation Research - Duration: 2:01.

An African child sick with malaria, but no medication is available.

Mosquitoes that breed dengue thriving in Sri Lanka.

Babies born in Bangladesh weighing too little, and at risk of long-term health effects.

In each of these cases, there are known interventions or technologies that are not being used properly

or not getting to where they're needed.

Implementation research, or IR for short, can identify and deliver solutions for settings

like these.

Now there is a tool produced by the World Health Organization and TDR, the Special Programme

for Research and Training in Tropical Diseases, to help people learn and conduct implementation

research.

The product of years of design and testing in the field, the toolkit brings together

those who implement health programs with researchers and community members to answer critical questions.

Implementation research is all about how to get things done and solved.

This toolkit brings policymakers and equally people who are professionals in communication.

These are skills which your average researcher will not have.

The research spectrum doesn't end at the person who does the research, does the evidence.

The real power of it is when it engages with the system, with the ministries, and has an

influence on policy.

This is not an innate capacity.

It's a capacity that needs learning.

It's a skill that needs to be created.

Mrs. Morris' School for Wayward Children and Other Exotic Creatures I - Duration: 1:31.

Headmistress Elaine Tatebaum, known as old Tatie to her colleagues, knew a lot about

witches.

As it was, she was one of New England's finest.

But having a school full of fine families meant that it was shrinking in population.

There were only so many daughters of fine families to go around.

Not to mention that international competition was killing Tatie's enrollment numbers.

Still, many members of the staff and of the school board remained diametrically opposed

to allowing orphans to return through the doors.

It was enough to make Old Tatie wring her hands every time someone asked her how she

was going to fix the plummeting enrollment numbers.

To her credit, she had a plan.

A very good plan.

And she had been preparing to present it to the parents at a Parent Presentation Plan

meeting immediately.

That was before Sarah Hopkins had gone missing.

It was before Lilibeth Hines had been snatched from her bed.

And it was more than a month before Annabelle Merryweather had last been seen behind the

bleachers after a particularly rough game of rugby.

The fact that three students had gone missing in the first two-months of her tenue was not

lost on Tatie.

She had retreated with her Parent Presentation Plan poster-boards to her office, where she

locked them away in a metal safe.

Her plan would not see the light of day until she brought the girls home safely, or was

fired.

Right now, she reckoned that latter might happen sooner than the former, as nobody had

any clues to the girls' whereabouts.

Hello, I'm Vickie Robinson, the Associate Vice President of Educator Preparation at

the University of Northern Iowa.

UNI is nationally known for its teacher education program and graduates over 450 teachers a year.

To continue the excellence of education at UNI, the College of Education is working to

raise funds to provide UNI students the opportunity to become Leader in Me certified.

The Leader in Me program is a nationwide initiative that develop leadership traits in K-12 students,

and certification in this program will help better prepare UNI students for success.

You can learn more about this and contribute to the project by visiting

Hi, my name is Alesha Rettenmeier, and I am a recent graduate of the University of Northern Iowa's

College of Education.

I was introduced to Leader in Me as an undergraduate student, but I gained a better knowledge of

it following my graduation.

I am currently an instructional strategist in the Waterloo School District, and I am

able to implement what I have learned with my students in the classroom daily.

With all of their involvement within my classroom and other people's classrooms, I have seen

a development in their leadership, responsibility, communication, and a lot of teamwork, and synergizing

happening in the school classrooms every day.

My name is Melissa Reade.

As the Director of Leader Valley, I am responsible for implementing the Leader in Me in

Cedar Valley schools.

I get to see the positive impact Leader in Me creates in the lives of educators, students,

schools, and the entire community.

The Cedar Valley area needs more Leader in Me certified teachers so this program can

continue to build vital leadership skills in future generations.

Hi, I'm Mike Fisher, and I am an administrator at Hoover Middle School, a nationally recognized

Leader in Me school in the Waterloo School District.

And Leader in Me training for UNI students would highly benefit them to be more actionable

and marketable candidates in the teaching profession.

In addition, most of the schools in the Waterloo School District are Leader in Me schools,

so this would make them very attractive for future teaching positions.

In the College of Education, we strive to best prepare UNI students for their future

teaching professions.

Your contribution to this project will add value personally and professionally to the

students and the classrooms in which they will serve.

Brock Osweiler will start for Denver Broncos vs. Eagles - Duration: 2:54.

Brock Osweiler will start for Denver Broncos vs. Eagles

The spiraling Denver Broncos are making a switch under center.

The team announced Wednesday that coach Vance Joseph told his players that Brock Osweiler will replace Trevor Siemian for Sundays clash with the Eagles.

On the heels of an ugly three-game skid, the decision comes as no surprise. Joseph made it crystal clear the quarterback position would be thoroughly evaluated after Monday nights five-turnover horror show against the Chiefs.

Siemian threw a trio of picks in the loss, capping a concerning string of games that saw the former seventh-round pick lob six interceptions to just two scores since Week 6.

The encouraging traits we saw from Siemian early in the year all but dried up by Halloween.

That puts Osweiler at the controls while second-year passer Paxton Lynch meshes back into practice after sitting out the start of the season with a shoulder injury.

Osweiler reunited with the Broncos in early September following failed stints with the Texans and Browns.

After being drafted by the team in 2012 and playing four years in Denver, he gives the club a familiar face -- but the rest is suspect.

Osweiler entirely flamed out in Houston, showing sketchy mechanics, a gangly throwing motion and slow processing speed. He was never seen as a realistic starter in Cleveland, which should tell you something.

Besides, the Broncos have problems that go beyond the quarterback, with protection issues up front, a hot-and-cold ground game and a banged-up core of receivers.

Facing the Eagles wont help, with Philadelphia sporting a vicious defensive front that makes a habit of ruining Sundays for opposing passers.

The switch has been flipped on Denvers quarterback carousal. It isnt likely to stop with Osweiler, but instead spin on weekly as these things tend to do.

Ask The Ageless Lifter: Is CrossFit OK For Me?gymnastics: - Duration: 5:17.

Ask The Ageless Lifter: Is CrossFit OK For Me?

Well, I knew it wouldnt take long before this topic popped up.

Now, the first thing to lay down in terms of ground rules for this discussion is that, similarly to yoga or karate, if you go to 100 different CrossFit boxes, youll have 100 very different experiences.

This means that as much as some of my fellow strength coaches might like to, we cant really paint with too broad a brush when it comes to evaluating Greg Glassmans brainchild.

Another important distinction to make is that CrossFit workouts are not the same animal as training specifically to participate in CrossFit competitions.

Ill assume were talking about the former for this column.

In other words, youre training, but not headed for the game.

So with those caveats out of the way, lets dig in.

The Risks Of CrossFit.

First off, I have some general concerns about CrossFit workouts in terms of injury risk.

These concerns are especially relevant to folks who have pre-existing injuries, as many of us in midlife and beyond do.

As an example, a lifter with a lumbar herniation will be at high risk for injury while doing Olympic lifts, even with perfect programming.

High reps are especially problematic, because toward the end of the set the lifter will have accumulated too much respiratory distress to effectively brace during the set.

Another suspect movement is the muscle-up, which is notorious for causing pec tears and various types of shoulder injuries, and these risks are compounded for older guys whore on the heavier side or have limited mobility.

Just to cite one example, I personally know of a very well-known lifting guru who blew out both his shoulders with muscle-ups.

It should also be noted that—with some exceptions—CrossFit is usually more effective for getting lean than it is for getting dramatically bigger and stronger.

This is because when your training schedule has a high amount of variability, youll be able to perform a lot of total work, which increases energy demands—and by extension, fat loss.

Yes, youll get better at skill-focused lifts, and you may definitely add some muscle, but unless you put in extra time practicing and put in lots of volume on specific lifts, getting seriously strong is unlikely.

That may not be a downside for some people, in fact it may be an upside, but you should go into the box with your eyes wide open.

The most jacked CrossFit athletes usually didnt get that way only by doing CrossFit.

They were jacked bodybuilders, Olympic lifters, or sprinters first, and that background helped them survive and thrive in CrossFit.

The Upsides Of CrossFit.

Now with all of those critiques said, Im by no means anti-CrossFit.

Im against bad CrossFit, but Im also against bad bodybuilding, bad powerlifting, and bad lifting, period.

I also think that CrossFit has been an important contributor to the recent rise in the popularity of weightlifting, and it has also dramatically increased the number of women who participate in strength sports today.

Those are important points.

It should also be noted that what CrossFit does well, it does very well.

CrossFit does an excellent job of creating a supportive community environment, it offers opportunity for competition, it emphasizes (mostly) high-value exercises, and it cultivates work ethic as a core athletic value.

All great stuff.

If youre intrigued by CrossFit, Id definitely recommend doing some comparison shopping.

Visit at least three local boxes, and watch a few (definitely more than one) classes at each.

Make a point of chatting with the head coach or owner, and if youve got injury concerns, bring them up and see how your concerns are addressed.

If you notice older folks in the class, interview them also and ask about their experiences.

Get informed, then make an informed choice.

Best of luck, and if youre an older guy or gal who does CrossFit, Id love to hear from you in the comments section below!.

Mrs. Morris' School for Wayward Children and Other Exotic Creatures J - Duration: 1:12.

So, on this particular day, which happened to be the first Monday after a blue moon,

she responded with a sigh as she answered her intercom.

It crackled and popped and even began to smoke a little as the nurse announced from the other

side of the abyss that she had arrived with a new girl.

"Who?"

Tatie replied, leaning into the intercom.

"You know, the new gr…l…fr…omm…the…o..her…si..de…of…to..wn."

Oh right.

Tatie did know.

She sat up straight, arranged the blotter on her desk and responded that they were free

to cross the rope bridge.

It was a minor inconvenience, running a school that was built into the side of a cliff.

Most of the edifice was visible to the outside world, but for security purposes the headmistress's

office had been carved out of the side of the rock and was only reached by a rickety

rope bridge that spanned an abyss.

It was indubitably true that this office was a feat of marvelous magic --legendary in the

witch world-- as nobody truly understood how it had been created.

While all this had sounded fine in print, Tatie found living inside the side of a cliff

claustrophobic and damp and with the added inconvenience of limited electrical wiring.
