What's up YouTube I'm Matt Brodie and today we're going to do a special
interview about men's ministry
all right so I'm here with Scott Johnson who is the mastermind behind the true
north men's retreat and so Scott tell me a little bit about what true north
really is for you what do you think about it yes it's a great question Matt
so last year God really pressed into my heart into my mind that's this one
singular idea and it's kind of controversial we've talked about this
before it in is simply this is that the Christian Church is failing men in the
same way that Christian men are failing the church and since I'm a part of both
of that both as a Christian male and I'm you know part of the church and I always
have a heart for working with the church my question is what can I do about that
and how can I be a part of the solution for that so true north is a result of
that because I felt like that we were missing an opportunity to really connect
with the hearts and the minds of men in such a way that speaks their language
you know I think in to some degree we've really sanitized church in a way that
it's um you know it's I caught there's no spiritual mud on the
carpet much less than a real mud on the carpet you know it's just got to be nice
and neat package to where I feel like men need a place where we can speak
their language out if that's in nature or through physical activity bonding
with other men and so true north is a result of a lot of those ideas about how
can I reach men especially Christian men to help them mature and multiply their
faith so that's kind of the origin of True North so it seems like it comes out
of result of trying to meet men where they are going out and being that that
literal disciple and going out and meeting them where they are versus the
inverse of just trying to get them to come to you to us and statistically
speaking we know that guys don't come to church right as regularly as let's say
the women do yeah and so being able to go out and meet them where they are kind
of grabs hold of them in a spiritual way that they're not used to yeah definitely
and I would say so I've been a pastor I'm at this church for about 17 years
and God's combing it to kind of help influence churches at large but I could
say from about 17 18 years pastoral experience say you're right the church
is not really hitting that demographic of men as much as we are hitting that
demographic of women so there's a bit of on you to say just keep coming to us
come to us and I think that's kind of a really bad look Jesus always went Jesus
always when I look at the Gospel of Matthew chapter 4 verses 19 you know we
see Jesus down by the water side and he didn't like go to the synagogue to call
his disciples he went to like where the men were and called them from that
location and so it's that kind of being sent go to where men are and then enter
in a dialogue and give them a new purpose and an invitation to the gospel
meeting them where they are instead of saying hey we'll go to church the
cathedral model we build it they'll come and the church is not Field of Dreams
you know we're weird being sent and to go meet people where they are so that's
that's part of that thought process too Scott tell me a little bit about what
the guys do on this TrueNorth retreat yes so for the mountain addition and
we'll hear more about this pretty soon we've got some other additions coming
out but the mountain addition of true north is a min come and on Friday and
they get there Friday evening they spend the majority of Saturday we give them a
mission of orienteering around the mountain so guys you know you break up
into your groups and I go and put checkpoints out we put about 10 10 8 to
10 checkpoints out and then I give them in the coordinates on the map and so
they're doing orienteering they're you know out on the mountain they have to
find these checkpoints using a map and a compass just basic land nav and some
mountain orienteering but as they go I mean that's kind of the that's the
magnet that's what kind of that gives you something to do give makes them have
given an objective but while they're out there they're they're doing this
opposite because they're walking together they're talking they're
overcoming a challenge but also there are four devotions we write a devotional
book and so they actually take time when you're out there so you're there to
private devotions and to group devotions and you do
that if you get to a place like this Riverside you got meant to be a great
place for our group devotion well that's when you're going to do your devotion so
he gives men a common goal and gives them an opportunity and then they can
kind of make the most of that time of the day I personally found it really
nice as we went through the trail and we took those moments that were good breaks
to sit down and just talk with the other guys and realize that I'm not alone in
the struggles that I have that I'm not alone in the questions that I have and
that other guys feel the same way and to have that that relationship and even
though it was just one day you do build relationships with these other guys and
I went in not knowing anyone else but I feel like I came away with friends yeah
I think that's the I caught the secret sauce of the whole weekend is that on
you can build community if you provide an opportunity for that
nothing then when guys figure it out like I'm I'm not alone in this and
that's the first realization the building community is like I'm not alone
there are other men who had the same struggles I do well I mean dude we're
all dragging the same wagon or something and you know and I'm not better than
anybody and we when we then kind of get real about that just the walls break
down I mean that is conversations and I think with guys girl like you I had no I
thought I was the only one who struggled with that right whatever that is right
right what you know so yeah if you could sum up True North in like one sentence
what would it be I think the best description that we've ever found for
True North is if Bear Grylls invented Sunday school you know that's kind of a
look at it if Bear Grylls was in charge of your Sunday School class that's
that's the that's the hook that's kind of how we say that because it is a mix
of adventure but yet it is centered on discipleship so that's kind of the two
elements it is wild the South or something so Scott if some of the guys
out there are interested in participating in True North how do they
get involved for the first thing we have a website which is the Corbin collective
calm so as Corbin cor be a in collective calm and you go to Corbin collective
calm you can read about it you can watch especially the videos that we've made
for I got the wrap-up the follow up we shoot video while we're out there then
you can learn about it how to get involved and even how to register we
have some other events coming up we're gonna have more than just the mountain
we're gonna expand this ministry because the need has has been it's been
phenomenal what men have been had they been responding to it so Corbin
Collective calm you can watch videos and learn more about it and learn I mean
Corbin collective is the ministry that I have that tried to help Christian men
mature and multiply their faith and so the true north is just one part of what
we do with the collective so that's the best place to
get all your information awesome thank you appreciate it and it was an awesome
retreat and I'm really glad I went amen glad to have you and look for it
especially if you know any man you feel like just has a heart for for being
discipled or want if you're looking for an arena to bring a man so like you got
a guy that you want to you need someone I'm there to help partner with you to
provide these environments where you can bring someone you can tell them it's a
it's a backpacking trip or whatever it doesn't matter but you know in all
honesty and I want to I want to set environments where you have a place to
bring a guy who would not go to church with me right who wouldn't go to that
environment but would go on a backpacking trip or just to come go to
announce on weekends that's the biggest thing provide environments where men can
encounter God and one another through discipleship but just outside the
confines of the church so that's our normal thing be a partner with men who
are trying to do discipleship alright well that's it I hope you enjoyed the
interview I hope you got something out of it I hope it sparks some questions
for you if you'd like to learn more about Korbin collective i'm going to put
a link down in description in the meantime please hit that subscribe
button and that like button it helps out a lot also I want to remind you that if
you have a prayer request go ahead and put it in the comments so that we can
pray for you until next time thanks and God bless
