Bill O'Brien says 'improved' Tom Savage will start for Texans vs. Colts
Tom Savage is the next man up for the Texans, as Houston coach Bill O'Brien said the fourth-year quarterback will start Sunday's home game against the Colts in place of Deshaun Watson, who suffered a torn ACL in Thursday's practice.
The Texans signed QB Matt McGloin this week in response to Watson's injury, but T.J. Yates will serve as Savage's backup this week.
Hes had a really good stretch of practices. Had a great practice today. Hes improved since the last time he played, O'Brien said of Savage on Friday.
Texans fans sure hope Savage has improved, as his career has been thus far underwhelming.
In his most recent start, in Week 1's 29-7 loss at home to the Jaguars, Savage completed 7 of 13 pass attempts for just 62 yards and no touchdowns.
While he did not throw an interception, he was pulled in favor of Watson, who went on to become one of the most productive quarterbacks in the first half of the season.
Savage also played in Houston's 57-14 win over the Titans in Week 4, but he did not throw a pass.
Savage's career passing stats: Seven games played, three starts, 63 for 105 (60 percent), no touchdowns, one interception.
While O'Brien praised the franchise's prized rookie, proclaiming that Watson "will be one of the top quarterbacks in this league for a long time to come, he put a positive spin on the less-than-fortunate situation the Texans have found themselves in.

As to how big a difference there is between Watson and Savage, according to the betting market, it's huge.
The Texans were listed as 12.5-point favorites over Colts before the injury to Watson, the point spread adjusted to Houston -7 since.
