A tripod is one of the most important pieces of gear that you should own and use as a photographer.

Yet I see so many photographers struggle to choose the right tripod and even worse not

use them properly or even worse yet - not use them when they should be using them.

So in this two part video set I am going to demystify tripods and give you 10 awesome

tips to make your tripod work magic for your photography.

Stay tuned!

Hey gang!

My name is Joe Edelman and my mission is to help photographers like YOU to develop a solid

understanding of the HOWS & WHYS behind great photography so that you can achieve your goals

as a photographer.

This is a tripod - pretty simple right?

I mean how hard is it to set-up and use a tripod?

Back in the mid 1990's, I read a book called The Camera by the great Ansel Adams.

To quote Adams, "Many photographers casually set up the tripod and use the various tilts

and adjustments in a haphazard way.

It is preferable, however, to be more methodical in setting up the tripod, to provide precise

positioning of the camera and the greatest possible stability."

Hopefully you realize that the lesson there goes well beyond using a tripod.

I remember as a teenager that using a tripod was actually kind of cool.

People took me more seriously like I actually knew what I was doing or like I was a working

professional.

The reality is that a tripod is an investment in your ability to take great pictures - just

like a camera - so do your research and don't cheap out

To take pictures at slow shutter speeds without getting camera shake

To take photos in low light with longer shutter speeds

To use much smaller apertures giving you greater depth of field.

The smaller aperture will generally require a slower shutter speed - hence the need for

a tripod.

To shoot a series of frames that will stitch together in a panorama or extremely high resolution

image.

To create High Dynamic Range images where you need to shoot a series of frames at different

exposures without any movement from one frame to the next.

For time lapse photography

For astrophotography

To make better self portraits - especially on vacation

To shoot video

To slow you down and force you to be more deliberate with your decisions.

There are many different kinds of tripods.

For the most part we can divide them into five basic groups.

Pocket tripods are usually less than 6 inches collapsed.

A pocket tripod will easily fit into a bag or waist-pack and they are very handy when

you don't not want carry something bigger and heavier.

Pocket tripods will support the weight of a smartphone or compact digital camera.

Look for one that has some sort of adjustable head, even if it's really basic.

Tabletop tripods are excellent for situations where the camera and tripod can be placed

on a small flat surface.

Their light, small, and easy to pack so they're great for travel.

Put it on a table, set the self-timer, and you can include yourself in the shot.

Or, turn your tabletop tripod sideways and place it against a wall or a pole to give

you more stability when shooting.

And since they hold the camera close to the ground, they're great for low camera angles.

Travel Tripods will usually bring your camera to just shy of eye level, but collapse to

an easy-to-carry size.

Travel tripods will support a digital or film SLR with a kit lens, or even a modest zoom

lens.

Avoid using long zooms or heavy telephoto lenses on a travel tripod - they tend to be

front heavy and can cause the tripod to tip.

Travel tripods that collapse down to 22 inches or shorter will fit in most airline carry-on

luggage.

Medium Duty Tripods fill the gap between lightweight travel tripods and heavier studio tripods.

The big advantage over travel tripods is that most medium duty models reach eye level or

higher, they are heavier and therefore even sturdier - hence much better when image sharpness

is critical.

Some models come without a head and then create a custom configuration by buying the head

separately.

Studio Tripods are very sturdy and usually designed to fit a specific need.

They are big, sometimes immovable and nearly always used with a specialized head.

They are designed to handle medium and large-format cameras.

There are eight features or characteristics that are common to pretty much all tripods.

The more you understand these characteristics - the easier it will be to select the perfect

tripod for your needs.

Collapsed Size is how long the tripod measures with everything folded up.

This is important if you are traveling or need to pack the tripod in a bag, camera case

or suit case.

Maximum Height Extension is how tall the tripod will stand with the center column and every

leg fully extended.

The Maximum Load Capacity is the heaviest camera and lens combination the tripod or

tripod head can handle.

If you put a camera that's heavier than the Maximum Load Capacity on a tripod, you

run the risk of it breaking or collapsing and causing damage.

So, it's important to know how much your camera weighs with its heaviest lens and any

accessories, and then buy a tripod that will handle them.

The weight is simply how much the tripod weighs.

Head Type – There are basically three types of tripod heads.

Pan-Tilt Heads – either with a single handle for horizontal movement or dual handles for

both horizontal and vertical movement.

This is the most common type of head that is typically built into cheaper tripods.

Ball-Heads – compared to pan-tilt heads, most ball-heads only have one control that

loosens or tightens the grip.

They are very flexible and allow very smooth operation while keeping the camera and lens

securely tightened.

Gimbal Heads – are specialized heads for long and heavy lenses.

Compared to pan-tilt heads and ball-heads, gimbal heads perfectly balance the camera

and heavy lens.

They are extremely easy to use in any direction and do not require tightening the head every

time the camera/lens moves.

They are great for sports and wildlife photography.

Regardless of which head type you choose, I strongly recommend choosing one with a quick

release.

There is nothing more irritating than fumbling with a tripod that has a 1/4 20 thread on

the head.

Once you have mounted your camera if you want to grab it to do a quick hand held shot or

even just to move the tripod - you would have to unscrew the threads from the camera and

then repeat the process all over when you are ready to mount the camera back on the

tripod.

Depending on the brand or model, a tripod may or may not come with a head.

Regardless, you will need one.

Feet come in rubber non-slip pads for most indoor and some outdoor shooting or a spike

which is best for outdoor shooting, the spikes hold the tripod firmly in the ground; and

depending on the tripod brand and model you may be able to add wheels or even ball bearing

feet.

Leg Locks are most commonly available as Twist types where you twist the leg to pull it out,

twist it in reverse to lock it in position or Lever locks where you open a lever to pull

a leg out, close it to lock it and there are also some custom options.

The Common Material – is what most of the tripod is made of.

The most common material is aluminum because it's inexpensive, but in the case of a heavy

duty tripod it can also add a lot of weight.

Carbon fiber is extremely durable and lightweight but indeed more expensive.

Some cheap tripods are made from plastic - the operative word being cheap and for the old

school large format shooters you can still find wooden tripods which are valuable if

you want to get your Ansel Adams game on.

I recommend buying a tripod that matches your height or is taller, so that you do not have

to bend to look into the viewfinder.

Once you put your camera on a tripod, the viewfinder should be at your eye level unless

you need to adjust for a creative camera angle.

Explore your camera angles BEFORE you open and set-up your tripod.

Since it takes time and effort to setup a tripod and since we tend to be a little lazier

about moving the tripod once it is set up - take a few moments to explore camera angles

and lens combinations for your shot - before you set-up the tripod.

This way you know you are beginning with an interesting camera angle.

Only extend the tripod legs only when needed.

The less you extend the legs - the sturdier you tripod will be.

Extend the thickest part of the tripod legs first, then the thinnest, for the most stability.

Before spreading the tripod's legs, adjust each leg's length.

This ensures that the legs are the same length and your tripod will be level.

However, if you are shooting on uneven ground, you will need to adjust each leg once the

tripod is in the correct spot.

If you are shooting outside in mud or on a beach - do extend just a little bit of the

bottom leg first so that you keep the locking mechanism out of the mud or sand.

Avoid the center column - it is the weakest and least stable part of your tripod.

There is no point in having your tripod solidly placed on three legs and then raising the

center column as high as it goes so that it can move around like a camera on a monopod.

The center column should only be used as a last resort.

Since you are usually working from the back of the camera, face a single tripod leg toward

the focal point of your composition.

Having two legs on the back side will create more stability and is less of a trip hazard.

Add some weight to the tripod.

Many tripods come with a hook at the bottom of the center column that will allow you to

hang a backpack or weight to add additional stability if you are working in windy conditions

or if your tripod is a bit too lightweight for the gear you have attached to it.

You can also use an accessory like the Stand Daddy that I talked about in this video and

attach small weights to the tripod legs.

Don't move the tripod with your camera attached.

Sure just a quick little move especially in an indoor setting it's no big deal, but

if you're shooting on location and especially working on rough terrain - don't risk having

the camera fall off the tripod or even simply stumbling while carrying the tripod.

Switch-off image stabilization and or vibration reduction while using a tripod.

When you are shooting with image stabilization or vibration reduction turned on, your lens

generates a minor shake that is meant to counter-act your hand movements.

This vibration ultimately reaches the camera and can introduce camera motion in your photos

when shooting at slower shutter speeds.

Use the mirror lock-up feature on your camera.

The shake caused by your cameras mirror may not affect your photos while you are shooting

at a fast shutter speed, but as you slow down the shutter speed the shake can become visible

in your photos.

To eliminate this, just manually lock the movement of the mirror.

This can easily be done by activating the mirror lock-up feature in your DSLR.

Check your camera's menu settings or consult the user manual to find out how.

Use the 2-second timer or a remote shutter release.

If you press the camera's shutter release while shooting at a slow shutter speed you

risk introducing camera movement even with the camera on a heavy tripod.

By using the 2-second timer feature you can do away with the camera shake as you are allowing

2 seconds for the camera to absorb that minor shake before exposing the photo.

If you want to be extra cautious and not take any chances, you can use a remote shutter

release or cable that allows you to shoot without touching the camera at all.

So there you have it.

Spending several hundred dollars on a tripod is definitely not as sexy or satisfying as

buying a new lens or camera body, but it is every bit as important.

While you are shooting, setting up the tripod may take some extra prep time, but the results

are worth the effort.

You'll also have to slow down and really think through how you want to set up a photograph

or what angle would work best with your subjects.

With just a little practice, you may find that using a tripod is easier than you think.

Next up in this two part video series on Tripods.

My favorite tripods and tripod heads and how and why I use them.

I hope you found this useful.

Please hit that thumbs up and subscribe so that you don't miss any videos and until

next time go pick up that camera and shoot something because your BEST shot - it's

your NEXT shot, so keep learning, keep thinking, keep shooting.

Adios!

"Bring Back Dragon Ball Z's Animators for Super" - Duration: 8:39.

If you've followed Super for the past few years, you've probably witnessed the title

of this video repeated many times, especially when a not so good-looking episode rolls around.

I always find it kind of funny, and a bit of a strange assumption to make.

If you're at all familiar with the staff on Dragon Ball Z, and have taken a look at

the staff on Super, you'll see that actually, there's a lot of crossover, and most of

them are in pretty high positions of power.

So I wanna detail exactly who is still around, what they do, and touch on a couple of guys

who sadly aren't still around, and look at where they are now.

So let's start with the obvious and touch on the very top of the totem pole: Tadayoshi

Yamamuro is Super's character designer and the supervising director of animation.

He is responsible for adapting Toriyama's new designs into an animatable format, and

also creating the look of pre-existing characters, too.

Back on Dragon Ball Z, he was one of the more prolific animation supervisors, and he was

so exceptional in fact, that he was given character design and supervisory roles for

all the Dragon Ball movies from Broli onwards.

I've covered his history in pretty deep detail, so if you haven't seen his episode

of Super Supervisors, I'll link it in the description.

Hopping down the pole, we have Takeo Ide, one of the two chief animation supervisors

on the show.

You can find his work on every other episode – he's responsible for correcting the

final product to try and bring a degree of consistency to the show.

Back on Z, he was primarily a key animator – in fact, he was one of the absolute best

when it came to producing top-tier sequences.

He supervised two episodes throughout the run, but it wasn't until GT that he became

a supervisor.

His style as of GT hasn't really changed that much – it's very masculine, and if

you want an easy tell for his work, just keep an eye out for those very distinctive ears.

Dropping down once again, Naoki Tate is one of the regular animation supervisors on Super,

and is seemingly considered premium, being given many, many critical episodes.

He was a regular key animator throughout all of Z and GT – animating some pretty fan

favourite fights.

On Super, he not only supervisors his episodes, he's also typically the guy who provides

the most animation on them, too.

His animation – in terms of movement – has changed quite a bit, but as far as character

art goes, it's not all too different.

It's just we rarely got to see him outside of his superiors' corrections back in the

day.

Again, be sure to check out my Super Supervisors episode on him for more details.

Speaking of his superiors, Masahiro Shimanuki, is also a regular animation supervisor, carrying

on from his role in Dragon Ball Z.

He was one of the series' top dogs back in the day, and despite struggling with getting

his style back for the first year and a bit of Super, he's made a real return to form,

and his current approach is a nice mix between the old and new designs.

He's definitely one to watch out for if you're feeling nostalgic.

Yuji Hakamada, though certainly not a regular on Super by any means, has done assistant

supervision on and off throughout the series.

He was a regular supervisor back on Z and GT, and although his presence isn't particularly

strong on Super, it's nice to have him around all the same.

Before heading on down into key animators, there are a whole bunch of Super supervisors

who, while not big names back on Z, have spent the past 20 years working their way up in

the industry.

Koji Nashizawa, Yoichi Onishi, Seizo Toma, Osamu Ishikawa, and Yoshitaka Yashima are

all supervisors on Super – some of them pretty regular.

They all had at least a decent stint on the original series or its movies, and now sit

as part of the new generation.

While I can't easily do before and after examples with them since they always fell

under their supervisor's corrections back in the day, just being able to plot the growth

of animators' careers like this is definitely one of my favourite parts of covering such

a historic series.

On to the key animation side of things, Super's first episode brought about the return of

an absolute icon of the franchise.

Katsuyoshi Nakatsuru, the character designer for the Boo arc of Z, and all of GT, provided

a short scene towards the end of the episode between Chichi and the Muten Roshi.

Unfortunately, Nakatsuru doesn't really stick to one series anymore, and has the spent

the rest of Super's run darting between other shows.

On a positive note, a name almost everyone knows, Naotoshi Shida, is of course still

around.

Though only contributing storyboards towards the start of Super, he has since begun to

provide his hugely popular animation on some of the more pivotal episodes.

Back on Dragon Ball, he was already showing a lot of promise with his action scenes during

the various tournaments, but it was towards the end of Z when he escaped Uchiyama's

corrections that we began to see his talents truly to come to light.

His distinctive character art hasn't changed too drastically, though his approach to shading

certainly has.

Ignoring the character sheets almost entirely, Shida uses pretty unique shapes to define

his characters.

Animation-wise, his movement has only grown more exaggerated over the years, but the general

flow of his work is still found in his older contributions.

Another old pupil of Uchiyama, Taiichiro Ohara joined Dragon Ball Super during the Future

Trunks arc, and has since become a regular with his new supervisor, Tsutomo Ono.

Funnily enough, Ono also houses another Z veteran, Yoko Iizuka.

Ohara was one of the strongest action-orientated animators back on Z, perhaps most well-known

for his fight between 17 and Piccolo.

His contributions on Super haven't been quite as strong, but from what I understand

talking to one of his co-workers, he's had some health issues.

Funnily enough, we recently gained yet another old Uchiyama pupil, Tetsuya Saeki.

They've only worked on 6 episodes so far, but it'll be interesting to see if they

stick around.

Very quickly, Jin Inaba only worked on 4 episodes of Dragon Ball Z, but has become one a regular

on Super, and does seem to be pretty good.

Lastly, we've got a few of animators who either weren't regulars on Z or aren't

regulars on Super, but I wanted to mention them all the same, just to hammer home that

a lot of these guys are still kicking about.

Hisashi Kagawa and Megumi Yamashita both contributed at least once, and Hisashi Mori, who produced

an incredible cut on Path to Power, popped up in episode 16 of Super, which was hugely

nostalgic in terms of its visuals.

Unfortunately, we have lost some old school heroes for one reason or another.

Naoki Miyahara, most famously known for Gohan's Super Saiyan 2 transformation, is now a director,

and heavily based in the CG world.

Toshiyuki Kanno, who animated Vegeta's sacrifice, has long since graduated Toei, and was the

character designer for Garo the Animation, and also an animation supervisor on the second

Hunter x Hunter movie.

Masaaki Iwane, the star of Studio Cockpit, has been the face of Pokemon animation for

years at this point, too.

It's true, we have lost of couple of great faces, but we've also gained some wonderful

new animators, too.

Kenji Miuma, Futoshi Higashide, Shuuchiro Manabe, Yuichi Karasawa, and many more are

all shining new examples of talent in the Dragon Ball world.

When things go bad in Dragon Ball Super, it's not a case of "who made this bad?"

It's not about the lack of old school animators.

The question to ask is "Why does this look bad?"

And that answer, as I'm sure we all know by this point, is almost always: time.

And that's part of why this video exists.

It's a reminder that we do have a great deal of old and new talents on board, but

the biggest thing to keep in mind is the time in which these animators are given to deliver.

Thankfully, we have a lot more time as of this new arc, and it's really showing in

the results we're seeing on screen.

It's certainly not perfect, and there are many episodes that are up against it, but

we're doing a lot better.

Thank you so much for listening, I hope this was at least a little bit insightful.

Hopefully, it helps put to rest the demands as seen in the title of the video.

For more info on Super's production, do feel free to check out my "PRODUCTION ISSUES

EXPLAINED" video for a quick overview.

Thanks for listening, be sure to rate the video and let me know what you thought, and

I will see you next time.

Lulu's Haul: Sweaters and Dresses for Fall and Winter 2017 - Duration: 4:03.

Hey guys its Riann and today I have a Lulus haul for you the other day I was kind of in

my closet and it was kind of chilly and I was like you know what I feel like I have

nothing to wear so I decided to hop on to Lulus and place an order so this is what I

picked up so I've really been wanting to pair my boots with dresses lately and I kind of

didn't really have any dresses that I felt really went with my brown boots so the first

thing that I picked up was this adorable thermal dress and its this gorgeous sort of cream

color it has a nice sort of cowl neck and its just super cozy looking again its thermal

it has kind of like a dolman sort of silhouette but yeah I thought this would be really great

for just throwing on scarf over and wearing my boots and I decided to go for this neutral

cream color because I thought it would work with a lot of colors of different scarves

and then also brown boots or black boots or whatever color boots that I have this next

item is also a dress and it is just this gorgeous burgundy colored dress as you can see it has

short sleeves and its just mid-thigh length the back has a nice gold zipper and so I kind

of was thinking about when I got this was that I could easily pair it with my Burberry

scarf because it has those traces of reddish burgundy so I thought this might work with

that we'll have to put it together and see but yeah that was kind of what I had thought

of again I could wear this with boots and a scarf and be very happy and very warm so

I thought this would be perfectly autumnal as well so what mostly prompted this shopping

trip is that I just felt like I needed more sweaters so I saw this one on the website

and I was just like oh my gosh millions of outfit ideas kind of started just flooding

into my brain and it looked so cozy and then I got it in the mail and it really is so cozy

and wonderful so it is this gray sweater again its got this amazing cowl neck on it and it

is just this super duper soft material I absolutely am so in love with this it has this really

cute sort of boxy cut and the front is just a little bit shorter than the back but I thought

this would look so cute paired with a faux leather mini skirt or conversely with a pair

of black skinny jeans my mom used to make fun of me because I think from like middle

school to high school I acquired like 14 gray pullovers and they were my favorite things

to wear so I absolutely love this one as well and I'm so excited because it is really soft

and really really cozy this last item I'm so excited about and when I saw it on the

website I had to have it so its this beautiful ivory colored sweater and it is so so soft

I'm going to pretend I am a very huggable yeti in this sweater and the main selling

point for me was the back because it is so cute you can kind of tie these into bows and

there is like little grommets on the side here so I thought that was so so cute also

our fall and winter weather here in southern California is very warm so I wanted to get

a sweater that I could wear but I wouldn't overheat in and so I thought this would be

perfect especially if I paired it with like a cute bralette underneath and then you could

see the bralette in the back and this wouldn't be too warm because there is an open back

to it but it still has all of that same fall feeling to it so yeah I really like that about

this and I'm so excited so I know that was a little bit of a short haul but that brings

me to the end of what I picked up from Lulus this time around everything that I showed

will be linked in the information bar below if you want to go and check it out yourself

I hope you guys are having a really great start to your November and I will talk to

you very soon bye guys

Announcing the Schiller Institute for Integrated Science and Society - Duration: 3:47.

We are so excited about the Institute for Integrated Science and Society.

It's a new way of doing research, a new way of teaching, a new way of learning.

It brings together students and faculty from so many different disciplines.

The scientists, the physicists, and chemists, and mathematicians with engineers to collaborate

to solve these enduring problems.

And we're also bringing together the Shea Center for Entrepreneurship, and we're trying to find

things that can be brought out into the world and create new opportunities.

And that alone is exciting, but now when you add in the humanities, you add in the English

and philosophy and theology and history, you bring on yet another perspective of what has

mattered to people in all walks of life around the world.

That can be uniquely brought by all these diverse perspectives and connected throughout

the school in a way that this isn't some institute off on the side.

It is integrated deeply within every part of this school.

What we've seen at Apple and I think what BC really embraces is this integration of

science and technology and humanities, to not only ask how do we solve something, but

does it matter?

Will it help people?

Will it change lives?

And I think that's one of the hallmarks of what makes BC so great, service to others,

and that's what I love about Apple, that's what love about Boston College.

What I hope for the future for the Schiller Institute is that there'll just be this continued

history of students wanting to come to BC to be involved in whatever the current day

problem is, and just this continuous momentum of new students coming and taking their knowledge

out into the world.

It's very important to us that this institute not only evolve in a new methodology for learning,

but it tackles problems that matter to all of us around the world, and focusing on areas

such as energy, health, and the environment are critically important to everyone.

And if you add to that that this is about how it matters in society, you can just think

of the incredible opportunities passionate students are going to have to make a difference

in the world.

I hope years from now, there are going to be some amazing future world leaders who came

from BC and came from this institute because they learned the process of brining together

diverse perspectives to solve important problems that matter to people.

And that will happen here at BC, and it will continue in their lives as they graduate and

move on into their careers, and they continue to do that wherever they are, both here in

Massachusetts and around the world in communities that are desperately in need of help from

all of us.

So, growing up, one of our sons would always say, "Why is it when I leave a school, it

gets even better?"

And I said it's because of the experience people have at the school that they want to

make it even better.

And Phillip had a great experience at BC, and this is one of our ways of making it even

better for the next generation.

In the end, it's going to create students that are so smart and talented and driven

and passionate, and all in the hopes of benefiting mankind and being of service to others, which

is the core mission of the school.

So, it's really about the core values and missions of BC applied to science, technology,

humanities, and solving problems that matter to us all.

I mean, what can't be more exciting than that? That's thrilling.

Nomination Hearing for Bridenstine to be NASA Administrator on This Week @NASA – November 3, 2017 - Duration: 2:49.

"Here's some of the stories trending This Week at NASA!"

On Nov. 1, Rep. Jim Bridenstine, the president's nominee to be the next administrator of NASA,

appeared before the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation.

"NASA is an extraordinary agency with an extremely talented and diverse workforce.

It has brought about civilization changing events and scientific discoveries.

It has inspired billions of people and it represents what is exceptional about the United

States of America.

I am truly humbled by the prospect of leading this agency."

Bridenstine, a pilot in the U.S. Navy Reserve and former executive director of the Tulsa

Air and Space Museum and Planetarium, was elected to the U.S. Congress in 2012 to represent

Oklahoma's First Congressional District.

If confirmed, he would become NASA's 13th Administrator.

NASA is evaluating how astronauts and ground crew would quickly and safely exit our Orion

spacecraft in the event of an emergency on the launch pad.

A test at our Johnson Space Center in Houston on Oct. 31 used a mockup of Orion, the new

spacecraft which will launch on our Space Launch System rocket, and take humans farther

into the solar system than ever before.

Flight and ground crew are required to exit Orion within two minutes in case of a launch

pad emergency.

Astronaut Jack Fischer shared imagery and experiences from his recent time in space,

during a Nov. 3 public presentation at the Smithsonian's National Air & Space Museum

in Washington.

Fischer served as a Flight Engineer aboard the International Space Station's Expedition

51/52 crew.

He returned to Earth on Sep. 3.

During his 136 days in space, Fischer worked with hundreds of scientific experiments, and

conducted two spacewalks.

Thanks to the availability of smaller, better cameras, our Mars 2020 mission will have more

"eyes" than any rover before it.

23 cameras will help capture sweeping panoramas, reveal obstacles, study the atmosphere, and

assist in science investigations.

Mars 2020's camera package will also have more color and 3-D imaging than the Curiosity

rover – including an improved stereoscopic and zoom-capable version of the Mastcam, called

Mastcam-Z.

It can spot features like erosion and soil textures from as far away as the length of

a soccer field.

And that's what's up this week @NASA …
