Ladies and gentelments, this is it
Historical moment
An interview with special guests
from Texas
Let's go, honey
T: John, Charles, David, so nice to meet you
Good afternoon. How are you?
We're doing great, thank you.
J: Pleasure to meet you too
D: Nice to meet you
T: Thanks
So, why are you here?
You're from Texas, yes?
J: Right
T: So, why are you here? And what do you do in our university?
... John
J: Ok. We're representing an organization called Character International
from Dallas, Texas
and it's our job to come and help future teachers
learning how to teach character education in public school classrooms
And we've been invited by the administration of the university here
to come and work with pedagogical students
and learning how to teach character education
so we work with students every Fall and every spring
Teaching them how to teach that in their classrooms
T: Ok. So, why did you choose Ukraine, Charles?
C: We chose Ukraine because Ukraine actually chose us
Some years ago we were invited to Ukraine
by a university in eastern Ukraine
and since 2001-2002 we've been doing seminars
T: So you're doing seminars for 17 years in Ukraine, right?
J: Yeah, that's correct
Do you see the difference between United States kids and Ukrainian kids
or Ukrainian teachers - the USA teachers?
D: I would say not a lot, except you're in Ukraine and you speak Ukrainian
and we're in America and we speak English.
But, apperently, same kinds of issues
same kinds of problems in families, communities have
My experience is what we're not that all together different
T: Nice, nice to hear that.
We're all humans
J: Yes D: Absolutely
T: I've heard that you give our students an opportunity
to share this knowledge
Do you give some kind of sertificates, diplomas
after [students] attending these classes
J: Yes. Every time they finish one of our seminars
we provide them a sertificate that says
they've attended a basic seminar
or a seminar of Leadership, or Conflict Resolution,
or other advanced seminar we may teach.
When they collect at least 4,
we give them a sertificate saying
they're a sertified character trainer.
That qualifies them to teach in their schools
or teach other seminars.
So that's kind of an achievement
for who wants to go through multiple.
But I understand that we can't teach it all the time
so we have to train trainers.
That's our job right now - training trainers
I've been working with the faculty for the last two years
trying to put together a meditorial board
that will allow us to receive articles and papers
and research materials
and then we will be able to consider that publication
So we're in the proccess right now of doing that
and hopefully in the next year - year & half
we'll be able to accept and publish
the first round of papers that represent the publication
It will start out being an online journal
the professional journal
We'll see what the reception is for that
and the request for copies
It's very expencieve to print out a paper copy
and we don't want the cost to get in the way
of preventing us from publishining it
So we'll start with an online publication
people can go online and read it
enjoy journals and the articles, you know
So we're very close to having that done
T: Nice, nice! So, what's next?
Which researches are going to be next?
Do you have a plan? Like, for next years?
J: Oh, I think the plan is to continue what we're doing
You know, and every time we come our base expands
we start with 35 or 40 students
and now we have 300+ students
in the entire programm
And that multiplies every time we come
so we wanna continue doing what we're doing
and hopefully we will see the benefit of that
throuthout all the schools in Ivano-Frankivsk oblast.
Public school system is looking very strongly
at adopting our programm for teaching character in the public school.
So we don't know what that lead us to.
More training at administrators and faculty members
and methodists to do working on science.
A lot of things are being considered right now
But we've a lot more to do. Before full complete.
T: I've heard about a laboratory. Which kind of laboratory is going to be opened?
D: Kind of a learning laboratory
where students in fact they are interstudent character
can come, do a research, participate
in ways, perhaps, going online
that is still being developed fully
it's going to happen sometime soon
T: But, is this going to be in our university?
J, C, D: Yes, right
T: Ok, this was about your experience here with classes.
What about our country, our city? Do you like it?
J: Oh, absolutely, absolutely
D: Why would we keep coming back, if we didn't like it?
T: Well, just in case
D: Yeah, it's... it's like second home, part of a heart is here
it feels like each time we step off the plane we're kinda coming home again
T: It's so nice to hear, thank you!
J: If you would talk to our families, when we get home...
we'll be home in 3 weeks
I've been here for 3 weeks, so it'd be almost 2 months being in Ukraine
When I get home, if you ask them, what is dad think about,
or what is my husband think about, and they would say
"he thinks about his next trip"
when it's coming in March or April
so it's continually on the top of our minds and in our proccess and plans
it's a very speacial city and a very speacial contry
and we feel very much of kindship with the people here
and someday we might even learn the language
It's very hard to learn for an old man,
but we learn litle of words every time
makes us feel more at home
T: You tell this is your second home. What your families think about it?
J: Oh, that's a wonderfull question
My family is very-very supportive at the work that I do here
They look forward to me being happy by comming
I hope that someday my family can travel with me here and I can introduce them
there're sircumstances at home that prevent all of us from coming sertainly
but at some point they feel like... they look at the pictures
and hear the stories and they're excited.
T: What about you, Charles
C: Well, of cource, my family is happy me to be involved at this work
my wife is also involved in this work because as you might know
she wrote the manual for use for this training seminars we do here
So she's very supportive and has made me to trip to Ukraine herself.
We're all in
T: Wow! Hrm, what do you think about moving to Ukraine
because I know families that moved from the West to western Ukraine
to Lviv, to Ivano-Frankivsk, to Kyiv
Have you ever had this question in your mind?
Whether to move to Ukraine or not?
D: Every time I leave my wife says "you're coming back..."
And I say "Maybe..."
J: We always are asked by our friends
"well, if you're there so often, why don't you just move there?"
And that make sense if we would do that,
but our families are so brought and spread out
you know, if this was just me and my wife, that would be one thing
but that children and grandchildren ...
T: Of cource
J: It makes it very difficult to leave your nuclear family behind...
Our trips are getting longer and longer
so it's almost like living in here now and I'm going home for vacation
T: Thank you very much!
J: You're welcome
D: Thank you!
T: Thank you for coming to Ukraine, to Ivano-Frankivsk
It's so nice that you give us, Ukrainians,
this opportunity to move our country into the future
and build our kids together. Thank you!
We are PNU Media and I'm Tim
I'm excited, how about you?
Let me know in the comments below!
I dare you!
