Hi guys it's Carrie Anne from EverythingMom
and this week's book pick is a
picture book perfect for Father's Day.
My Dad Used to be Cool. As a parent I love
this book because somehow there's this
this process that we go through when we
become parents. There's like this past
life of what we used to do. Go to
rock concerts and stay at hostels and
backpack across the country. All of these
things. And so the story is kind of based
on that premise where a young boy
there's like remnants of his dad's past
kind of around the house. A motorcycle
that's for sale in the front lawn and he
kind of envisions his dad is this like
rebel bike rider when he was younger.
A drum set in the closet so he leads that
to think perhaps he was part of this
rock band. So he has these visions of
what his dad used to be like. Kind of the
opposite of what he's like now. Instead
of doing a drum solo on stage he's
folding laundry or bending down to
ride the bike he's bending down to tie
his son's shoes. So in the son's mind
those kind of like the everyday stuff
like the vacuuming and the laundry and
just like things around the house that's
boring and his dad used to be based on
his mind so much cooler. But as the story
goes on the boy realizes that being cool
doesn't necessarily mean that that his
dad has to be in a rock band still.
There's other parts that make him cool.
Cool. The fact that they can hang out and
he does stuff with him and isn't
embarrassed to do stuff with him. So I
really love that angle. I also love this
book and how it portrays the dad. A lot
of times a dad in the parenting role is
viewed as the one who does all the fun
and the mom is the one that's doing as I
said the vacuuming, the laundry,
cooking the meals. In this story actually
there is no reference to mom at all
so that leaves this great into a book
that could be for single-parent; it could
be for a two dad family; and it could be
for a mom dad family but the focus is on
dad. And so there's that part of it but
also that the dad is shown doing things
in the house. That he does vacuum and he
does fold laundry and he does spend time
with his son. So I'd like that reference
too. As we all know as parents that dads
do play an active role in at home and in
parenting and it's good to see a picture
book that displays that to kids as well.
Reinforces that idea. This week's book
pick, My Dad Used to be Cool, is a perfect
picture book for not only Father's Day
but really just to celebrate the dads in
our child's lives. So I'll be sure to
include the link down below and how you can
