There is no
fear
in love.
The Greek word for fear here is phobos
from which we get what English word?
Phobia.
There's no phobia, there's no fear
there's no phobos
in love
but perfect love drives out fear.
The Greek for "drives out" or "casts out" here
is a rare verb that
usually only applies to exorcisms.
I love that.
When perfect loves shows up
it performs an exorcism
on our souls and casts out
(Exorcist voice) I say come out of that soul
and casts out
fear.
Fear is exorcized.
It is cast away, it is cast out.
When love shows up
and the more we embrace love fear just leaves.
Why? If we read it it says
"because fear has to do with punishment
but the one who fears is not made perfect in love."
Fear has to do with punishment.
Given the context, the first application would be that
we can be afraid of what happens after death and if that's the case
we're caught in a religious treadmill. Always trying to
please God because we're afraid of God. We're afraid of his judgment.
Hey, remember what we looked at last week in Hebrews
that one of the
one of the things that Jesus came to do was
to rescue us from our slavery to the fear of death.
Remember reading that in Hebrews 2 last week?
He frees us from that.
That slavery to the fear of death thats always
working in the background and
and now here again
he frees us from our fear of
the judgement that is to come.
