Once you start the organization and it starts going,

there's less direct service that you can provide.

Your volunteers, your staff,

those people who are empowering people,

who may be better than you at doing that.

First step is knowing what your vision is,

second, seeing what else is out there,

testing that out to see if you really feel called to it.

So go volunteer. Me, I was volunteering...

I started volunteering with kids,

then I started working under the organization,

working with them to build a program,

working with kids,

then I was like, "You know what?

I'm called to the next level in this."

Then, build a team.

Whenever people look to fund your vision,

from my experience, people not only fund the idea,

but they look at what your team is,

who your team is, who else believes in you,

and is walking alongside you to do it.

Then the next piece is just taking the risk.

For us, we ran our first workshop,

and it was huge.

We took our TV out of our house because

we didn't have any computer screens,

so we took our TV out, plugged our computer in,

and the kids worked off of that.

Carried our computer, actually here, to TechArtista,

to the board room, and we'd just plug our TV in

so the kids could have extra TV space.

Then, you go all in.

Stay focused on the mission,

stay focused on the end goal,

because it gets terrifying.

Be willing to sacrifice everything,

because it's going to require everything you have

in order to make it work.

Nissan concept puts Faraday Cage in an armrest for incommunicado driving

Although there are plenty of ways to avoid being distracted while driving, starting with a healthy dose of self control, Nissan has taken a no-holds barred approach to stopping smartphone communication on the move.

Meet the Signal Shield concept, a Faraday Cage for the armrest of your car.

All human drivers are susceptible to distraction behind the wheel, no matter how experienced or responsible. And few things are more distracting than the buzzing, glowing little screens we carry in our pockets.

According to research quoted by Nissan, more than 30 percent of drivers admitted to using their phone while driving in 2016, compared to 8 percent in 2014. The company also found that 18 percent of drivers have texted while driving.

There are plenty of ways to avoid using smartphones on the road, starting with self control. Some people flick their device to flight mode, and there are plenty of apps to automatically reply to incoming messages with a predetermined response while driving.

Apple CarPlay and Android Auto also work to cut distraction by putting main phone functions on the cars infotainment display, and allowing drivers to use the inbuilt voice assistant for hands-free messaging.

But Nissan has sought to remove gadget distraction completely by building a Faraday Cage for the armrest of its cars. Putting your phone into the Shield is essentially putting it in a box no electromagnetic signal can penetrate.

Cellular, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth or GPS wont work while the armrest lid is closed.

Locking the phone away doesnt render it completely useless. Drivers are able to hook it up to the audio system using AUX or USB connections, although playing music through AUX does involve using the phone to change song, playlist or podcast.

If the driver forgets to set their playlist up or wants to change their music on the fly, theyre going to need to grab the phone again, which kind of defeats the purpose.

As such, we cant see this concept – as well intentioned as it may be – gaining much traction.

People already know they shouldnt use their phones while driving, and even the prospect of a fine or an accident isnt enough to stop a worrying percentage of them.

So the likelihood of such drivers exercising enough self control to lock their phone away for the duration of a car trip in the first place probably isnt high.

Still, you have to at least give Nissan some credit for attempting to tackle the issue.

Nissan produces some of the safest cars on the road today, but we are always looking at new ways to improve the wellbeing of our customers, says Alex Smith, Managing Director of Nissan GB.

The Nissan Signal Shield concept presents one possible solution for giving drivers the choice to remove all smartphone distractions while driving. This is about delivering more control at the wheel, not less.

Some drivers are immune to the activity of their smartphone, but for those who struggle to ignore the beeps and pings, this concept provides a simple solution in this very connected world we live in..

The original Hot Wheels Lincoln Zephyr "Scrape" heads for auction

One of the most iconic hot-rods of all time is to be auctioned by RM-Sothebys in Santa Monica on June 24 – 25, and it will be interesting to see how it is received by the marketplace.

Unveiled in 1998, it featured on the cover of five magazines and starred at concours events such as Meadowbrook, the Louis Vuitton Classic and SEMA.

It toured 20 major car shows in the USA and Canada as the feature attraction in 1998 and 1999.

Its move into mainstream culture was complete when Mattell built a 1/18 scale model of the car for its top selling Hot Wheels range of toy cars (below), ensuring it became one of the most instantly recognizable cars on the planet for a generation.

The Lincoln Zephyr custom was sold at the end of this publicity blitz in August, 2000 at Monterey for $275,000, being purchased by the Robert E. Petersen Museum in Los Angeles where it has resided since, once more in the public eye.

Though the Scrapes design is located somewhere near the intersection of art and automobiles, it is likely to be shunned by both genres on the auction block.

Without the spate of newsreel coverage and magazine covers driving its public recognition, it may only sell for slightly more than it did 17 years ago. The official RM-Sothebys estimate for the car is from $300,000 to $400,000.

If you had $275,000 to spend on a car back in 2000, you could have purchased a Ferrari 275 GTB/4, Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gullwing or Ferrari 500 Superfast.

Indeed, it was such a long time ago in terms of the prices paid at auction, that you could have purchased two 250 GT/L (Lusso) Ferraris with $275K.

A Ferrari 250 California Spider sold that year (2000) in Monterey for $925,000 and in Brooks Gsaad auction in December that year, a Ferrari 250 GTO was passed in with a high bid of CHF 13 million (US$7,672,687).

By contrast to the Scrapes value being only marginally more now than it was then, the Ferrari 275 GTB/4 in now worth 10-15 times that original $275K, a Gullwing will fetch 4-5 times and a Superfast around ten times.

Lussos now sell in the $2 million bracket, and just to emphasize that the rest of the market has done likewise, the California Spider is now worth around 15 times that figure and the GTO has also increased by an order of magnitude.

Hence, the question must be asked as to whether the Scrapes price in 2000 was overinflated by the hype in the two years that preceded the sale, or whether it really is worth a lot more than the estimate suggests.

My take is that in a world where authenticity of manufacture is more important than authenticity of concept, the Scrape is one of the landmark cars in American Hot Rod culture, and a purchase in the estimated range will offer long term upside as the significance of the car is recognized by a new generation of collectors who grew up dreaming about it.

Whats more, it shoots real flames, and theres every chance one of those kids is now collecting big boys cars and can harness the value in it.
