Waching daily May 14 2017

This spot is close to the beach.

It's not very dangerous.

You can see...

Kids and their moms can go snorkeling.

The whole family can have fun.

The people who scuba dive can go out further.

Here it is.

Isn't this so cute?

This is the best.

- They really stand out. / - That's a hot item.

- Right? / - I want one.

I normally scuba in that.

This one you have to hold. I have to adjust.

(I am the teacher and you are my student)

(She follows Jaesuk's lead into the water)

(The inexperienced teacher looks after her student)

(It doesn't look easy)

It's so slippery.

I'll suffer just for you.

Try breathing.

It's not stuffy, right?

It's fine.

If water enters the mask a little...

Then just blow it out.

If it gets difficult...

- This means, "Let's go up." / - It's not thumbs up?

No, that would be bad. This expresses excitement.

Clapping is a compliment.

This means, "Let's go up?"

So it's not this.

Slowly. We're not going to dive deep this time.

I'm so excited.

(They're both full of laughter)

I'm really excited.

I was surprised by how freely

she moved in the water.

(Floating)

To protect the coral,

you can't wear fins at low water levels.

Only when you're far out.

- It's possible then. / - To protect it.

(There are more fish here)

(Underwater always shows fantastic view)

- Sharks? / - There are lots of sharks here.

- Where? / - It'd be awesome if you met a shark.

- Goodness. / - Wow.

- Those are real sharks. / - Baby sharks.

- Baby. / - These sharks don't bite people.

There are some sharks there.

They're just baby sharks.

Don't baby sharks bite?

Then just punch the nose.

- Sharks have very sensitive noses. / - Is that right?

But you can't punch hard in the water.

We're scuba diving.

(What will Chaea do when she sees sharks?)

(Flapping)

What are you doing right now?

Can't you swim?

(She's more adorable than expected)

(The sharks are going over there)

(The sharks are the ones fleeing from surprise)

(She uses all of her air to chase sharks)

(Chaea can't keep up with the sharks)

(She was trying too hard)

Do you have to go back?

Can you catch the shark?

I dragged her all the way back to shore.

She can't swim.

I almost died. Seriously.

I dragged her...

We went really far away.

It's already over?

(It's exhausting but really fun)

(Where is Jaesuk who has been dragging Chaea?)

Are you going again?

I'm going to a deeper place.

- She's more advanced. / - That's really cool.

- Isn't she cool? / - She really is.

- Coral Garden. / - Coral Garden!

The location is called Coral Garden.

I'm already looking forward to it.

Ready?

See you back here.

I'm going to see a lot of cool stuff.

1, 2, 3.

That's so cool.

- She's so cool. / - That's cool.

- I'm embarrassed. / - She's so cool.

(It's time to see Jaesuk's scuba diving skills)

(Super Jaesuk flies in the water)

She's so good.

She's fast.

(Majestic)

Can beginners go here?

Only advanced divers can go there.

How deep is this?

- The deepest is about 17, 18 meters. / - 17, 18?

I didn't go too far.

This place was half fish, half water.

There are so many fish.

The reason why I like scuba diving is

because it's quiet.

- I like it when... / - She told me that.

With the perfect water... I become one.

It's so quiet. The only sound is from my oxygen tank.

- That's right. / - I like quiet places.

(Jaesuk enjoys underwater in peace and quiet)

- This place is total bliss. / - It sure is.

There are more fish where the coral is alive.

There are more for the fish to eat

and it's a good environment.

- That's so pretty. / - Yes.

Chaea, is this your first time seeing this?

This is the first time for me.

- What did you do there, Chaea? / - I didn't see that.

That is so beautiful.

Oh, my.

(Look at that)

It's such a sight.

- It's like a movie. / - Look at that.

I loved it.

It's even good to just stay still

and not move in those situations.

That's so true.

(This place is really the Coral Garden)

(What kind of interesting fish did she spot this time?)

(There's a moray hiding between rocks)

(Nice to see you)

(Sadly, the scuba diving experience has to end here)

As a serious scuba diver,

how would you rate this place?

I would give this place top scores.

It's very difficult for coral to be alive like that.

There was a moray that was this big.

I was scared.

I was really surprised.

Do you approve of this diving point?

It's great.

I have never seen so much live white coral.

The coral is all alive.

White and purple corals.

Even for snorkeling and novice swimmers,

you can spot a lot of fish

and sharks in shallow waters.

I saw sharks while snorkeling.

Even when the water was shallow.

(It's not over yet)

(They go out again after recharging their energy)

Nemo is an extra here.

- That's right. / - It seems so.

Let's go back.

Stop. I'm tired.

(What are you saying?)

(They head to a restaurant)

I'm so hungry.

- You need to eat after playing in the water. / - Right.

Playing in the water is so hard.

The various fish underwater...

- They were pretty and all... / - Right.

But it's time for them to become food now.

Let's go meet them.

- We need to eat seafood here. / - What is that?

Of course.

That's so pretty.

It's cool.

I love the atmosphere.

This is the best timing to eat.

Everything tastes good after going in the water.

- Of course. / - It tastes great.

It's coming.

The bowl is really big.

- What is this? / - Tom yum kung?

There are shrimps in it.

It's tom yum kung.

That looks so good.

That's expensive in Korea.

The sea is right there so they use fresh ingredients.

It is fresh.

(Serious)

She ladles it so well.

Is that too much?

- I really love tom yum kung. / - Me too.

- Let's eat. / - Thanks for the food.

- It's similar to tom yum kung. / - Yes.

However, it's more like Korean spicy fish stew.

(It's delicious)

The aroma isn't that strong.

It's a mix of tom yum kung and Korean fish stew.

Even if you don't like strong spices...

I'm going to dip it.

I'm not going to waste anything.

(Eating skillfully)

- There's ginger in it. / - It's good.

It's here.

What is that?

Thank you.

- Crabs. / - It feels like Hawaii.

- Crab, crab. / - Game over.

- It's crab. / - If you eat crab, you mostly win.

- Of course. / - Crab dishes beat most foods.

The crabs are so big.

Let's try one.

Should we tear one?

Cheers.

It had chili sauce in it.

- Koreans will like the taste. / - It's good.

It suits the Korean palate.

I haven't eaten it yet but it looks good.

Is it spicy?

Yeah, it's a bit spicy.

You can taste the chili sauce.

Pepper.

It's that common Southeast Asian taste.

I like it because it's a little spicier.

Forget chopsticks.

You need to use your hands when eating crabs.

- You need to eat crabs with your hands. / - Of course.

(She eats it well without using chopsticks)

We really need to eat this.

Jaesuk.

Claws are the best with crab.

- Eat this. / - You eat it.

Eat this and give me the other one.

Is she really giving that up?

- That's like giving everything you own. / - Of course.

Giving the claw is practically a marriage proposal.

If this was between a man and woman,

it would've been a proposal.

You'll have to wear the claw on your finger.

That's right.

This is a moving moment.

(This is so moving)

(She eats it in one bite)

It's delicious.

- It looks delicious. / - It is really delicious.

(Licking)

- That looks so good. / - It must be.

Look how focused she is.

Her eyes might pop out.

(I'll eat you up)

I've never seen you so focused.

I'll surely eat you before the day is gone.

Before 7:30 p.m. Before the sun sets.

- Right here... / - Crab shells.

- Crab shell rice? / - Exactly.

- Amazing. / - I'll mix it for you.

After mixing it...

Gosh.

(Rice in crab shells are great)

- That's hard to beat. / - After mixing it...

(They have never been more serious)

- Like this? / - Good work.

I like you because you eat well.

- That's amazing. / - The rice disappears.

- Doesn't it? / - I'm swallowing it up.

(Finally, Chaea gets that last claw)

It's delicious, isn't it?

I feel like I'm on top of the world.

I think the music is being played for me too.

I'm so happy.

(Beautiful music, great scenery and delicious food)

(Travelling with a good friend is happiness itself)

- It's so beautiful. / - Isn't it?

Reyna's Thesis Presentation | Tips for Tips, a Server's Handbook - Duration: 7:15.

(Good afternoon! My name is Reyna, and I will be closing today's presentations) by sharing with you all my thesis project, entitled "Tips for Tips, a Server's Handbook"

and before going into my deliverable, I wanted to talk about myself

as a means of why I chose this topic

Ever since I graduated high school, my mom encouraged me to work part-time, in order to create character

Because I was very introverted and very shy

And she told me she was worried about me because I was "too soft"

Working at a restaurant really helped shape me into who I am today

Though I still consider myself more of an introvert, I've learned how to communicate with others

Because as a server, you're forced to interact with a wide variety of individuals and

you can't run away from that, once they seat you with someone, you have to take that table, no one else is going to do it for you

so it really shaped me to grow up and have a thicker skin

It was, it is very challenging, I still work there, but it's also very rewarding

There's a quote that says, "though food may be what brings people to a restaurant, service is what makes them come back"

and I'm sure you all can relate to this, even if you go to a really great Korean BBQ place,

if the server was really rude to you, you wouldn't want to go back,

or maybe you'll get it to go, but point being, service is really important

The problem statement that I wanted to focus on is due to the fact that

because I've worked there for a pretty extended amount of time

and there's very few people who are still there from when I first started,

the turn over rate in restaurants is 72 percent

meaning that 7 out of 10 people, or slightly above 7 out of 10 people,

will quit being a server within a year

and I've seen a lot of close people leave, and sometimes it is personal reasons,

but a lot of the time, it's because when you go to restaurant

you're greeted by a happy friendly staff

who are very welcoming, and this makes people perceive the job as being easy,

or at least super enjoyable because we look really happy,

but in reality, sometimes that's not the case

and it's not that it gets easier, it's that you get used to it

which is why I believe, that if someone wants to become a server, not to discourage them from doing so

because again, it was a really rewarding experience for me,

but to encourage them, because

it will really help you deal with your stresses outside of work

The solution that I want to create, was to make a handbook

a handbook that incorporates first hand experiences

that I've had from working there for over 6 years

and incorporate the experiences of those who I've worked with with

with the approval of my manager

and it targets new servers

as a means to prime their mind for what they are about to endure

so that they won't get scared off

because I've been told that a new server will follow me around during my shift,

when really when I'm waiting for them to clock in, they never come in

because they got scared from their first training day

the problem with current handbooks, is the fact that they're very text heavy,

they're boring, and honestly no one really reads them

I had to read them for research, but I didn't finish any of them, which only supports my reasoning even more

My book cover inspiration, the outside appearance, I wanted it to resemble that of a check presenter

Check presenters are what's left on tables, I'm sure you all know,

And tips are usually found in here, for servers to collect after

Whether it be receipt tips or cash tips

And often times they say, "Thank You"

But for mine, I want it to say, "You're welcome"

Because it's going to be my experiences written down for them to read, and for them to reflect on

So it's like "You're welcome, these are my tips for you!"

And at first it'll look like a check presenter

But once they grab hold of it, they'll realize it's a book

And I wanted to incorporate that gold detail that's in the front, into the inside of the pages

To show that even though they are not yet receiving these receipt tips or these cash tips

Gold is perceived as valuable, and with that gold detail it shows that there's still value in these verbal tips, even though they're not cash tips

These are what my spreads look like, so versus the text heavy, dry readings of regular handbooks

I wanted mine to be more engaging and fun

So I used bright colors, I played with typography

I played with the titles of each tip

with an explanation of what it means

And I incorporated illustrations into them

And this is an example of what one of those spreads looks like, from up close

On the left, the title is, "Keep calm and 'dot dot dot' wait on"

Meaning that you should be really, really patient

And on the right image it shows why

This is a sample scenario that they will inevitably have to endure

And it shows a server at a table, and she's just there waiting and waiting

For the guest to order, when they're (the guest) is taking forever but they don't want them (the server) to leave because they said they're ready

And meanwhile the background changes with all of these things that the server will later have to address

On the left of that spread, those are the verbal tips that I wrote out

that goes into more detail of the actual tip

And throughout my spreads, I have three of those pull out tabs, that act as receipts

So it looks like they're a tip, well they are a verbal tip in this case,

And when they pull up the tab, it'll reveal a second illustration

And it's also a metaphor showing that,

when they're taking it out, they're taking that tip to

furthermore evaluate for when they actually do get to take their own tables

so it's like them taking those tips that I gave them

and overall I just want to say that

we are taught that in society that "the customer is always right"

and because so much attention is focused on the customer,

everyone always forgets about the server, and what they're going through

and doing this project was a way for me

to give back to my fellow servers and potential new servers

and to say that, "hey, I appreciate you" and "I know what you're going through"

Thank you!
