I think bacteria are awesome. Bacteria

are the coolest thing that exist.

I studied good bacteria, probiotics and

then other beneficial microbes that are

used to make yogurt, fermented food that

people love every day. Those bacteria

have these immune systems called CRISPR

caste system.

There are viruses that only

attacks bacteria called phages, and what

you can do is you can use CRISPR to

protect bacteria from those phages and

you can also use those systems to then

attack other DNA sequences. People have

used those to create genome editing tools. So I've

kind of studied CRISPR caste system from

a bacterial immune perspective all the way

through to a genome editing tool. I

didn't realize starting grad school that

I was going to make a huge difference. I

didn't realize that my research was

going to have an impact on anything, but

it's really great to be able to know

that I'm building a building block for

someone else to come and build on top of.

Coming in to grad school was 22 I had no

idea that I'd be able to do research

that people would cite. That's been

really neat to see someone who's taken

my work and and added on to it. I

thought I wanted to come in and do like

just probiotics but I came out like

this is awesome. This is gonna be, CRSIPR

is gonna take me far. This is going to be what

what I do for a long time.

I'm studying a mangrove die-off in the

Bahamas, and how biotic factors like

grazing and plant disease could be

contributing and facilitating this

die-off.

Mangroves are really important for a lot

of islands and coastal communities in

general, especially in the tropics.

There's been studies that show without

mangroves the impacts inland from

hurricanes and typhoons and things like

that are much greater because there's

nothing there to protect the coastline.

So just because you lose those

places that are taking the direct impact

of the waves and the storm surges you

don't have that to protect your Island

or your coast preventing it. So you're going

to have a lot more in-shore flooding and

a lot more damage to homes. By studying this

I think I'm providing an avenue to start

looking into how these things are

interacting and incorporating them into

understanding, okay in the future if sea

level rise is going to occur how's that

going to affect these other biotic

things or is that going to make it

harder for the mangroves to survive.

I'm studying the effects of climate

change, specifically temperature

increases on the life cycles and

survival of a species of butterfly called

the Appalachian Brown. Insects in general

I find are a really fascinating overall

group to work with. I mean, I study

butterflies, and they are, in general, it's

a good example of an insect that's

really being affected by temperature

increases. I basically create little

warming chambers in field conditions at

Fort Bragg and raise butterflies from

egg to adult and look at how temperature

affects their life cycle timing and

their survivorship. Increased

temperatures are sort of giving them a

longer period of time in which to

develop and it's also causing their

development to happen faster. Sort of a

general finding that's been found for

many species of insects, but we found for

the species that we're studying, species

that I study, you're actually able to

have more generations or more life

cycles per year than previously thought,

and we think that's completely related

to temperature increase and

climate change. So it might be that it

increases their populations and maybe

that's a good thing for conservation of

rare and endangered butterflies, but also

if their lifecycle changes based on

temperature but they don't kind of reach

that stage of development in Fall

because there's sudden shift to negative

temperature, or negative environmental

conditions in Fall, that might actually

kill off or have like a population bust.

I really recognize the importance of

climate change as a driving

environmental factor that's happening

that's current is ongoing and it's

really important.

Salmonella is one such food-born human

pathogen that can manifest itself in

live poultry, and my research has focused

on using a yeast-derived feed additive

which has properties to control salmonella

and apply that to a model

integration. And the upshot for the

consumer of this system is that a very

nutritious form of meat protein can be

offered at an affordable price with

relatively low impact to the environment.

And it's my duty of a CALS student to

promote and advance animal agriculture.

I fell in love with the ability of us to

do research that is able to be applied

to real-world problems. I can't explain

how much I've learned in this department,

how good the department has been to me

with regards of preparing me for a

career in agriculture as well as

teaching me how to be a good scientist.

I'm able to conduct the research that

addresses a very significant industry

issue and I think that's important

moving forward not only in my career, but

also for the health of the animals and

the people who depend on their products.

And I'm thrilled with the opportunity to

take the knowledge I've learned here

forward as a CALS alum and apply it in

the real world so that I can make

agriculture better for everyone.

Prince Charles Takes Grandfather Lessons For George But Kate Bans Camilla Parker From Her Baby - Duration: 1:49.

Things are always tense between Prince Charles and Camilla Parker Bowles but it must be a

little bit icier since Prince George has arrived.

It has already been well documented that there is absolutely no love lost between Camilla

and Kate Middleton and Queen Elizabeth has really lowered the boom.

Just as she was directed to steer clear of Kate near the end of her pregnancy she likes

to pretend like George doesnt exist, except for special occasions.

Meanwhile, Prince Charles seems to be trying to make up for being MIA while William was

small and is morphing into a hands-on grandfather.

Charles gave a speech at the Princes Trust and Celebrate Samsung Success Awards and after

it was interrupted by a crying baby he opted to ad lib about his own grandfatherly duties.

He claimed to be taking lessons and now understands a little bit about how babies cry for different

things at different times.

For some reason I can totally believe that this learning curve was lost on him when he

was raising his young sons so its great to see him even want to be this involved now

as a grandfather.

Of course the closer Charles is to William, Kate and George the more Camilla fumes and

rages.

In her mind Charles son is the enemy, the biggest obstacle in between her and the throne

and it makes her sick to see her husband embracing this young family even if they are his flesh

and blood.

Can you blame the royals for keeping Cami away from the baby?

Concert ticket scalping: Even buyer-tagged tickets offered for resale - Singapore Hot News - Duration: 8:31.

Concert ticket scalping: Even buyer-tagged tickets offered for resale

Never mind the moral outrage and outpouring of anger on social media over previous incidents of concert ticket scalping - there was never any doubt the scalpers would be back in action when tickets to British singer Ed Sheerans concert dates here in November were released for sale on Thursday (May 11) and promptly sold out all 20,000 tickets.

The only question might have been: How high would the resale prices go?. Right now, Cat 1 tickets are going for up to $13,516. 17 each on online ticket marketplace Viagogo, a whopping 54 times more than the original $248 price.

AEG Presents, the organiser of Sheerans shows here, has warned that unlawful resale (or attempted unlawful resale) of a ticket would lead to seizure or cancellation of that ticket without refund or other compensation.

But otherwise it has not issued a statement on whether it intends to take action against the scalpers or if it would void illegally resold tickets.

Of course, concert organisers and promoters seldom take action. It is only when they sniff profiteering in the air that they might clamp down on the perpetrators, which is not all that often, either.

In Singapore in recent years, there have been at least two instances where concert organisers have voided tickets put up for resale on various platforms.

In November last year (2016), fans of British rock band Coldplay railed against the people who tried to sell tickets to the groups concerts here next year on March 31 and April 1 at astronomical prices, just a few hours after the tickets were officially available for sale.

This forced the concert organiser to void some tickets. But on international ticket marketplace Ticketbis, the tickets still went on sale, going for as much as $8,888, almost 30 times the price of the most expensive tickets, originally sold at $298.

Even worse, it was reported in March that the police have arrested two men for suspected involvement in a ticket scam for Coldplays concerts through online marketplace on Carousell.

Sheeran is playing at a smaller venue than Coldplay so there are fewer tickets available, which probably explains why they are going for so much more.

While Coldplay pulled in 100,000 at the National Stadium, it is believed that there were only 20,000 tickets available for Sheerans two nights at the Singapore Indoor Stadium, on Nov 11 and 12.

While scalpers who take advantage of dedicated fans are morally reprehensible in the eyes of music lovers like myself, previous reports on the issue have quoted legal experts saying that re-selling tickets is not against the law here.

In fact, ticket scalping is a grey area internationally. In the biggest music market in the world, the United States, it is not a federal offence but it is illegal in some states.

Sometimes, the laws change. In Ontario, Canada, for example, re-selling tickets online above their value was illegal until last year, when re-selling was allowed as long as the tickets were genuine and the sale came with a money-back guarantee.

Entrepreneurial people who re-sell tickets at marked-up prices justify the higher cost as payment for their effort in being first in the queue to buy the tickets when they went on sale.

If coercion is absent and no criminal tactics are employed, the resale of tickets involves willing sellers and willing buyers. Any protest against greedy scalpers and profiteering is merely moral outrage, and not cause for legal action.

After all, if fans stop buying from the scalpers, no matter how desperate they are to see a show, then perhaps the practice could be curbed.

Ticket scalping gets sinister only when what seems like syndicates and/or the use of bots are involved.

There is no data available on how pervasive ticket scalpers are in the concert scene here, but industry sources say that the practice is not prevalent and is the work of a few individuals out to make a quick buck.

(Besides, for popular concerts, organisers often limit the number of tickets that can be purchased during each transaction.) In places such as New York, scalping has become a bigger problem.

High-tech scalpers use automated bots to gobble up tickets the moment they go on sale online, faster than any human can, and circumventing limits on ticket sales.

This has become such an issue that the citys governor, Mr Andrew Cuomo signed a law late last year(2016) criminalising the use of such bots to buy up tickets in bulk.

One solution might be to take a leaf out of the book of the organiser of Glastonbury, one of the worlds largest and most established music festivals.

To eradicate the scalping problem, the events highly sought-after tickets are non-transferable and come with photo identification.

If one has already paid for the tickets and cannot make it to the festival, you cannot sell or give it to someone else, but you can get a refund. These tickets are then resold.

Having gig organisers implement a system like that might add to final ticket costs, but it is one excellent way to ensure that it is the dedicated fans, and not money-minded scalpers, who get their hands on coveted tickets.

The good news is that this is already happening here with the upcoming concert by One Direction member Harry Styles at The Star Theatre on Nov 23.

The tickets will have the name of the person who made the purchase printed on them and they are non-transferable.

As organisers Live Nation Lushington SG remind fans on their social media, any ticket holder with invalid identification documents will be denied entry.

Yet even this move might not be entirely effective. The tickets, which cost from $68 to $168, were sold out after they went on sale last week on, but some are currently available for up to $6,199 on Viagogo.

If the resale of tickets occurs, it means scalpers and their victims -if they can be called that - have to attend the concert together.
