Presidents Moon, Trump reaffirm alliance in first phone talks - Duration: 1:31.

U.S. President Donald Trump wasted little time to personally congratulate President

Moon Jae-in on his election win.

The two spoke on the phone for around half-an-hour late Wednesday, Korea time,... pledging to

maintain close cooperation over North Korea's military threats.

They agreed to lay the groundwork for a summit in the coming months.

Yu Joonhee reports.

President Trump was the first foreign leader to call Moon Jae-in to congratulate him on

becoming South Korean president.

During their first phone conversation, President Moon said the South Korea-U.S. alliance is

more important than ever... as uncertainties swirl around the Korean peninsula.

President Trump said South Korea and the U.S. are "not just good allies, but great allies."

While Trump noted North Korea's nuclear issue is a difficult problem - he said it can be

resolved.

President Moon stressed that the alliance is the basis of Seoul's security and diplomatic

policy direction and will continue that way,... showing appreciation for Trump's efforts to

prioritize the North Korean issue.

President Trump said he will invite President Moon to the White House to celebrate the two

leaders' election victories, saying he respects the choice made by the South Korean people.

Moon said he will send a special envoy to Washington soon for talks with President Trump.

The U.S. leader also pledged to send a high-level advisory delegation to Seoul to arrange one-on-one

summit talks.

The 30 minute phone call, which took place Wednesday night Korea time, was taken at President

Moon's private residence in Seoul as preparations are still being made for him to move into

Cheong Wa Dae in the coming days.

The number of people in Korea's workforce last month came in at slightly under 26-point-six

million.

According to the new data from Statistics Korea on Wednesday, that's up 424-thousand

from the same period a year ago.

The employment rate for last month rose half-a-percentage point on-year to 60-point-eight percent.

The construction industry saw the biggest increase with over 160 thousand new jobs,

followed by the educational services, real estate and rental services, and wholesale

and retail services.

However, businesses in the manufacturing sector hired four-point-four million people last

month, a decrease of 62,000 from last year, extending their losing streak to ten months.

Statistics Korea posted the unemployment rate for last month at 4.2 percent, up 0.3 percentage

point from the same month last year.

But April's unemployment rate for young people, aged between 15 and 29, reached eleven-point-two

percent, the highest tallied for April since 1999.

Moon Jae-in sworn in as Korea's new president - Duration: 2:12.

During the stripped down inauguration ceremony at the National Assembly, which brought the

curtain down on close to a decade of conservative rule,...

President Moon Jae-in pledged to bring the nation together,... putting extra emphasis

on unity and communication.

Kim Hye-sung reports.

Moon Jae-in was sworn in as the 19th President of Korea at the National Assembly on Wednesday...

expressing the passion of his vision for the country,... after months of political turmoil.

12:08-09 "I pledge to abide by the Constitution.

I pledge to sincerely fulfill my job as president to work for the peaceful reunification of

Korea, advance the freedom of the people and promote our national culture."

.

On this day, the elaborate ceremonies, parades and celebratory performances of previous presidential

inaugurations... were replaced by a simple, smaller-scale ceremony,... given the impeachment

of Korea's previous leader in March.

After thanking the other candidates who vied with him for the presidency,... Moon laid

out his vision for the country, saying that he will build a new, unified nation.

1212 "I will be a president for everyone.

The people who did not support me are still my people, our people.

I will now push to unite the people of Korea."

. , .

Saying that this presidential election was triggered by the people's demand for change,

Moon vowed to communicate with the public, his advisers and staff.

He also addressed two key issues facing the nation -- security and economy.

He vowed to push for the peaceful reunification of Korea by working closely with other countries

and promised to cut the cozy ties between businesses and politicians and create new

jobs.

Given the enormous list of tasks he's facing -- including restoring public trust in political

institutions,... addressing North Korea issues and reviving the economy -- Moon went straight

to the presidential office of Cheong Wa Dae after the ceremony to get to work.

President Moon names chief secretaries at Cheong Wa Dae - Duration: 2:37.

We start with some breaking news at this hour…

President Moon Jae-in has appointed a number of senior presidential secretaries.

The announcement comes less than a day after President Moon revealed his nominees for top

government posts,.. like prime minister and head of the intelligence agency.

We have our Song Ji-sun on the line with the details.

Jisun?

Mark.

President Moon has appointed key aides at the top office.

For chief civil secretary... he nominated Cho Kuk, Seoul National University law professor

and opinion leader NOT coming from prosecution background, unlike

those of the previous administration...

Cho is expected to assist Moon's drive to reform the prosecution, in line with the president's

vision for fair and just society.

He is of Busan origin, also home to Moon.

For personnel recruiting...

Ewha Womans University professor Cho Hyun-ok is the top presidential secretary.

The politics professor who is also a gender equality and feminism activist, carried out

similar role during the Roh Moo-hyun administration and is practically the first female aide to

take care of personnel appointment.

She is from Seoul and has also worked at the Mayor's office for women and family policies.

Former web portal Naver's vice president Yoon Young-chan is the top press secretary for

President Moon.

The social media expert and former journalist led Moon's election campaign and also launched

Moon's online policy mall 'Moon First Street' which attracted massive interest from the

public.

Former National Assembly deputy spokesperson Kwon Hyuk-ki, who also served as deputy spokesperson

for Moon's election campaign, will be working alongside Yoon, as the director of the Cheong

Wa Dae Press Center.

For administration of the top office, a budgeting expert from the Finace Ministry Lee Jeong-do

will be taking care... for transparent allocation and management.

He is from Gyeongsangnam-do Province.

President Moon also appointed former vice minister Hong Nam-ki, as the new director

of policy coordination at the Prime Minister's office.

The new secretaries and nominees from various background and regions, prove President Moon's

goal of hiring talents from all corners and professions.

President Moon's chief of staff also said the state leader will convene an emergency

cabinet meeting this afternoon... for setting up a planning commission for transition of

governmentMark.
