- Slowly but surely English is losing
importance in Europe - So what you just saw
there was John Claude Juncker
giving a speech recently in Florence. Now
he's the president of the European Commission
and though he might have been making
those comment a little bit in jest or
trying to have a little dig at the
British prime minister, Theresa May, it
still goes to an interesting point: with
Brexit is English gonna lose a little
bit of it's importance and if so, should
Europeans continue to use English as a
lingua franca when they meet each other
or should they decide to use a different
language like for example German, French,
Polish, Italian, one of the other official
languages of the EU. Now Brexit is
scheduled to happen in 2019. It's not just
John Claude Juncker who ... the President
of the European Commission who's
currently talking about using more
French as opposed to English. Also Mr.
Brexit, that's Michel Barnier,
he is ... already announced that he
will conduct the negotiations on
behalf of the EU with the British
government in French and not in English.
Now the moment English clearly dominates
linguistically worldwide not just in
Europe. It's the language of science,
diplomacy, culture, especially popular
culture, with music cinema, most things
that are kind of internationalized are
done in English. So it's not like English
is suddenly going to vanish as a result
of Brexit but its influence might start
to wane just a little bit now at the
moment, there are 24 official languages of the
European Union and all 24 those official
languages are also working languages. Now in
reality the European institutions here
in Brussels primarily use three
languages which are English, French and
German and in reality nearly everything
is done today in English.
And now we find ourselves in front of the European Commission building.
Over there is the Berlaymont.
I have to tell you that I worked in that building.
You can even see my old office.
The European Institutions are located in Brussels,
Strasbourg and Luxembourg
which are 3 cities with French speaking majorities.
So it's completely natural that the new language for Europeans
will be French!
Stop please! And why French?
Germany has currently the strongest economy, also the biggest population
and Angela Merkel is the leader of the Free World.
Sorry Donald!
So why isn't it German to be Europe's new language?
But, yeah, unfortunately, Germany still suffers from 'war guilt'
and the other countries will never accept it's domination, linguistic domination.
The legal terminology
can no one understand ... way too complicated!
One of the arguments in favor of English is that it's
considered a neutral language
because it's not the language of Germany or France.
However, can it really be considered neutral
when English is the language of the United States
which is the world's biggest power
and also the language of the Euroskeptics in London?
For me, Italian would be better.
It's a beautiful languages, melodious.
On the other hand, the Italians will never be capable of dominating Europe.
This is for sure because ...
because they're Italians ...
they are not able to dominate anything ... :)
So that's my fun little rant about
whether English is going to lose a
little bit of its importance as a result of
Brexit. Write me below what you think
about whether Europeans should continue to
use English as a lingua franca even
though the United Kingdom is leaving the
European Union. What languages you think
could be a good replacement? Should it be
one of the more dominant languages like
French and German, which have of course
historical cultural and economic ways in
Europe or should it be something more
neutral a language that doesn't have a
country with that kind of economic,
political or political influence in
Europe, like for example Polish, Czech? It
could still be English, of course, because
maybe now that the UK is leaving it will
be considered more neutral to use it. So
write all that good stuff down in the
comments section below. So if you like
