Welcome back, welcome to Carmel.
This is our little intro.
Today, this tape will be about becoming, "A becoming" going from where you at to where
you are not and that's becoming holy.
Stay tuned and learned about some basic elements, very short milestones on your path.
The royal road to union with God, that will be our intro.
And I will try to get that next time so you can decide whether you want to listen to this
tape.
So, this tape is about becoming, becoming holy and the power of truth and the power
of charity.
Truth and charity, I don't want to think, have you think about truth as a bubble of
air in the bottom of the ocean and somehow, it's caught, let's say in an upside-down
clam shell and it's capture there, way down the deepest part of the ocean.
When you remove that obstruction, that bubble is going to the surface; now it could be captured
and suppress at different level.
But as soon as you removed that obstruction.
The bubble goes up to the surface.
It's natural law, we've all experience that, Seppy you've seen that, haven't
you, bubbles rise, okay?
So, I want you to think about that, about that and I am going a little bit slower.
I'm going to do a little bit reading.
I want to get some accuracy about this and the sub-theme is '' The Power in truth
and Charity" So, always respond with truth and charity when you can't to the capacity
that you have, this entire theme about Christianity, the basic mission of the mission of the church,
the basic mission of Christian is truth telling.
Is that a shocker to you Sep?
truth-telling.
Jesus Christ said He was the truth, the way, and the life.
What's that third one I always forget?
"The Life" The way, the truth, and the life.
So, but, obviously, I don't want you, if you are in prison, if you are being oppressed,
if you are living in catacombs, you be prudent to, okay?
Now, in what comes to mind is Poland, World war 3, World War 2 and the suppression by
Nazis and communist and they have different problems.
John Paul II has written about that, we'll come back to that.
"Becoming Holy" I'm Carmelite, we're talking about Carmel, you have a lot of options.
We are talking about that which is generic, that will not harm anybody and we are going
to the Trinity, that's Carmel.
Trinitarian, we start with the Trinity.
This is your take away for the entire tape.
There are 2 processions for our purposes, 2 processions from the Godhead.
Two processions from God: a procession of truth and a procession of goodness and you
are going to become a participating in that truth, participating in that goodness.
Like an iron bar participating in fire and you'll takes the attributes of that fire.
The iron bar takes the attributes and begins to heat up and glow and give a light and heat.
You are going to be become participating in truth, participating in goodness, that's
holiness, simple as that.
You are going to participate in the attributes of God, that's holiness.
So, I want you to know that the priesthood and the church are built such that all who
come in contact with that, in the ideal.
All who come in contact are to touch.
You come in contact with God, you touch truth and goodness and you come in contact with
the church and Priesthood, the body of Christ.
The ideal and we are having a map here, we're building a map.
The ideal you are to come in contact with truth and goodness, and charity.
Truth and goodness.
I want you think about that and you are to touch truth and goodness, you are experience
truth and goodness, you're to smell it and hear it.
So, I am going through the senses of the body.
You just go through that, that's kind of Carmelites do.
So, we start with God, we come down to you, I think you have five senses and all of that
coming from God to you experience here in the world is to be the same, that was his
ideal.
So, "How God exist?" starting a new paragraph.
"How God exist?" and this kind of like bullet points for you.
God exist in His nature, which is His essence and His operation.
That's very basic, I want to put that in your radar screen, on your map of knowledge
and this simple enough for beginners.
Those who are a little bit advance and those who are far advanced.
For those who are far advanced this is simple review.
God exist, how does God exist?
He exists in His nature, how do we talk about in His nature?
His essence and His operations, okay?
And so, if you have Christmas and you've seen some Christmases where people got the
snow cone machines, that's my experience; the machine you put ice in it, cranks out
and it crushes the ice, the ice comes out and you put flavoring in it.
Think of this, this is a very poor example, it's nice precise.
It's for those who are beginners that plastic machine is the essence.
It is what is the operation is the cranking of a handle and the producing of the ice.
You got that?
Okay.
So, God is, He exist and then, He has 2 operations, loving and knowing.
Loving and knowing and the object of knowing is truth and the object of loving is goodness.
So, God does not and that's His operation, then He moves away from the Trinity and He's
moving towards creation; He's loving and knowing, those are His operations.
So, God does not possess truth or goodness, like I possess this marker.
God is truth, God is goodness and He shares His nature with us and the sharing of that
nature tha putting on of God is holiness.
Is that clear?
Is that helpful Seppy so far?
"Yes" You mean that or you are just telling me "Yes" Okay, just want to check, my
boss behind the camera there.
Now, I want to go a little bit deeper with your permission.
So, we've laid the basis for this.
We are going to go a little bit deeper and we went and talked about God's nature which
is essence and operation; we are talking about precession there.
I think you can pick that up.
We now talk about your nature, my nature.
Both men and women have a nature and that is their essence and their operations and
I want to suggest to you that holiness is a normative.
It's not the exception.
Holiness is to you, holiness is to humanity, is what blooming to a rose.
A rose is to bloom, it is to become more than what it is and it is the same with us.
We are to become more of what we are and if you've ever experienced patience, first
attribute of love.
Just a simple thing about patience and these virtues were talked about by non-Christians,
you know.
Socrates, Plato, you go into philosophy and the beauty and the peace of patience.
If you ever been in a situation where you shouldn't have been not patient, shouldn't
been angry and you've experienced that you were not moved.
Somebody criticizes you, somebody offended you.
Somebody was hating you and didn't', it was like water off the dock's back.
It was really, you understood were they were coming from, they may have been mentally ill,
they may have been in pain.
But you are understood what was going on there and even if you didn't understand.
You have that patient, that's power.
Have you ever been in that positon Seppy, that's part of human experience where someone
is you know in roundabout way, maybe they're hurting you intentionally or not intentionally
and it just that not move you and there's the opposite where you're moved, the waters
churning inside and you are just inside, and you're just pumped up.
A lot going on there.
One of the hallmarks of good discernment is to still that water, that's why patience
is kind of important.
Water that is quiet, you can look deep down in and so, if you are looking inside yourself,
you are self-reflecting, if you are called, your emotions and your appetites and your
passions are calm, you can look deep, deep, deep.
That's a little bit of a digression.
I talked about today, the first one is becoming holy; I am introducing you to the elements
of holiness, what it's all about, is it too churchy?
I don't think so, it was talked about non-Christians and people in, we have the Greek culture,
we have the folks that were round before Christ and thought it was important.
So, there's and odor that's giving off by holiness.
If you ever met good people, there's something about that goes beyond our senses.
It's a mystery.
You know what I mean Seppy?
Have you met good people and you kind of, you can know by way you know what, that's
holiness.
So, there are four marks to the church and one of those marks is holiness, holiness and
so, as you go about living, you are expected, it's part of your nature to bloom.
If you are that rose bush, you are supposed to be blooming, if you are not happy think
about it; maybe you are that rosebush that never was told you can bloom, you can have
flowers, you can give off the fragrance and odor of holiness and if you're constantly
in state of depression, you are constantly down and this and that, maybe you are to try
God and if you don't want to try God, go practice virtue.
I don't care, I am happy if you practice virtue, that should give you some happiness,
give some flowers to that person that is really hurt you and cause you some problems and they
don't have to know it's coming from you.
Do it anonymously and that little unction that you feel, wow.
That is an act of love, that is very powerful, loving and knowing, sharing truth, and sharing
love, that's powerful because it's in our nature and it's been denied you.
It's been taking off the map of knowledge.
You can hate, you can put your comments down here, I am simply putting back on your map,
on your map of knowledge what was there, you can reject it, you can ignore it, but it was
there in the 1500's for John of the Cross; it was there for Teresa of Avilla and that'
my goal, that's my job, and that's what I've been told to do.
Is that clear Sep?
"Yes" Okay, I again, want to go a little bit further, deeper, a little bit deeper dive.
We're looking for that bubble caught under that clamshell, we are going to go a little
bit deeper.
Put on your Catholic imagination.
Now, that is not to be goofiness, whatever, put on your catholic imagination and I want
you to see the grandeur of God, that's the grandeur of God in the world and g-r-a-n-d-e-u-r
for Seppy.
Grandeur of God, when she's typing up the transcript.
I want you to go back, think about the Bible, the gospel, and creation.
Trinitarian, starting with God, coming to the creation and the breath of God on that
soil, that dirt.
The 'rhua', I think it's R-H-U-A.
The rhua, where God breathes; God breathes on this earth and gives life to matter and
that became Adam and I want you to know that there was growth from something to matter
to something beyond that matter and we will go into that stage later and those are the
4 stages of growth but I want you to now come and think about this becoming, this growth
that was shown to us by God.
That there is growth from matter, from nothingness to something more that nothingness, to the
growth that you can experience.
There's some breathing, the breath, the rhua of God breathed on that matter and have
power, power.
What did I just tell you before, there is an operation of God in His essence; He is
loving and He is knowing and He is breathing is loving and knowing that brings us to Christians,
the body of Christ, the church has 2 lungs.
I want you to think about this for our purposes, for our purposes, the breath of the church,
the breath of the people of God, that breath of the body of Christ, the rhua and you are
being invited into that and others into that are being invited to breathe.
I want you to think that the church has2 lungs, these lungs breathed, and there is the teaching
in the breath of this Church, and there's the sanctifying.
Two lungs: one lung is teaching truth, the other lung teaching, breathing, sanctification,
you know how to become more Go form good, to better, to best, got that?
So, there's the teaching office, the sanctifying office.
For you who are advanced.
I'm coming into this for beginners who've not experienced anything and discussing with
them two of the three offices.
There are 3 offices, there's the teaching, there's sanctifying and there's governing;
and right now I am limiting our talk for our purposes to the teaching and sanctifying.
Now, our Father breathed and He's created and we observed that creation, we make a comment
on it, there's this distinction and there's going to be levels that's why always try
to give press upon your intellect levels.
There's beginners, there's intermediate, there's advanced.
Not everybody is equal, not everybody is equal and there was a statement by great John Paul
II to children said, An infant, a children, young people said, "Children and young people
do not be deceived by the empty promises of the world and some of those promises are to
obliterate, to take away the idea that there's distinction and creation, some of you are
artistic.
I have very hard time with some types of art.
I have hard time singing, I can force myself to sing; people are given gifts, people cultivates
the gifts.
Is it birth or nature?
Nurture or nature?
But know your happiness.
Find your niche in life, there's peace and happiness that is achievable and we get back
form this map of knowledge and I think many of us have received.
If you are like me I didn't know this, I have to fins this on myself, I felt a little
bit cheated.
I was receiving maps that were in complete, and I didn't want to argue, I just wanted
to know the reality and let me decide and I am going to let you decide.
I don't want to steamroll.
I propose that there are maps that are more complete than the maps that you've been
given and I want to suggest now, go a little bit dive,
a little bit deeper and I want to suggest that, remember?
The power of loving, the power of charity and truth?
No act of love goes unnoticed, no act of love is in consequential, if you're in your room,
all by yourself, and you think kind thoughts and you began to be patient with your neighbor
or yourself, you are beginning to awaken to this life of charity and this life of knowing
and loving.
Which is godly, isn't that something?
So, love is effective always, everywhere.
Love is always in season and timing.
I am not talking about valentine love chocolates, kissing and hugging; I am talking about hard
love in Corinthian where Paul said, "Love is patient, kind, willing to endure all things"
Tough love, patient, kind, traditional love, and there's different kind of love, the
type of love we have for people, for animal, for God.
We'll get into that later on, but I want you to know about that.
There are lungs, they are labeled, these are functions in the church, we discussed that
loving and knowing and I am repeating this for beginners.
We can go at least 3 times to give you something for your mind, your heart, and your memory,
for those who are advanced, just a review, for those intermediate you might be getting
bored because you want more and you've already heard this.
So, let's take a look at this a little bit.
Now, for us in Carmel, we have sacraments, okay?
And one of the sacraments everybody knows is about is Baptism; but there's also the
sacramentals, we have the brown scapula.
I want you to think in terms of Paul on this holiness.
This projection of holiness.
Paul, I recall, Seppy does not recall but there's one of the apostles whose mere shadow
came across them in the market and that shadow healed them, okay?
The mere shadow healed them.
So, I want you to think about sacraments and sacramental, there's the sacrament – baptism,
we have a lot of sacramentals.
Carmelite is big in the sacramentals, I don't know if I have one here, it should.
One moment, that's the Carmelite scapula.
Grace is defined by Thomas Acquinas as participation in or experienced of the life of God, the
Trinity.
Sacramentals, grace.
I'm getting pumped up here, take sacramentals.
Sacramentals are participation in grace, sacramentals are being dissed; put down a little bit, sacramentals,
open your mind to God.
Sacraments are where God is coming to you, think of sacramentals as opening your mind
to God.
Keep that in mind, that's part of holiness.
The teaching office, I want to leave you with a point and sanctifying office of the church
is built such that it is ready to give you, proclaim.
That's the proclamation of truth, proclaim to you and grant you goodness when you come
in contact but you are going to receive the profession that you give is your response
to that and you choose the particular way, you live that out; which is your faith, your
holiness, that's your vocation, your belief and your faith and your expression of it and
you are putting on goodness and that is a gift to your neighbor.
That's your vocation, Carmel Dominican, whatever you're at; non-Catholic, you are
there to love.
Amen
