Live Today With Passion - "How different do you think your career
and possibly your life would have been
had you not embrace the physical fitness
part early on I mean you know it just
gives me between my physical fitness and
my faith I have so much discipline in my
life and I have such a positive outlook
on life and you know the opportunities
that I have and the things that I've
been able to accomplish in my life so it
starts out you know I'm up in 4:30 in
the morning I'm in the kitchen having
breakfast five o'clock I'm in the gym
6:30 I've already had another shake and
7:30 I'm eating a couple turkey burgers
dropping the kids off at school and by 9
o'clock I'm having another meal and I've
already been to church and worked out
and you know I feel like there isn't
anything that I can't accomplish when I
was in high school I must have been
maybe 16 or 17 years old and I went rock
climbing in Eldorado Canyon where I near
where I grew up in Boulder I've been
climbing about 3 or 4 years and I want
to do a climb called t2 now the time t2
is a relatively difficult climb and I
went at it with a kind of an arrogant
lack of preparation and I hadn't
prepared for being able to do certain
kinds of finger cracks I've got I figure
I'll figure it out when I get there and
I also didn't pause this is I think
about boldness and discipline
I didn't pause to really double snack
double-check all my systems okay so I'm
on the fourth pitch I'm about 400 feet
above the ground I'm going across this
slanting crack system that I'd had
trouble that I started after home with
my forearms started to engorge with
blood and lactic acid which means at
some point even if you're on a big hold
your hands are going to melt off okay
and I'm about to fall
I'm 400 feet above the ground but it
should be okay because there's
protection
I'm tied into the rope I may take a fall
but I'll get caught for some reason then
to this day I still don't know why my
brain triggered that I should look at my
knot and I looked down at my not my knot
had
untied I had made the mistake of jet of
never really thinking about the best nut
for certain types of situations and I
tied him with what's a bowline now the
advantage of a bowline is it easy to
untie if you write the disadvantage of a
Boldin is the easy to untie it had come
untied as I kept moving across and it is
just hanging in my harness I'm seconds
away from falling only now I will die I
will die if I fall off my forearms are
melting and the knot had come untied and
so I called down to my partner I said
why not come on time what is he going to
do he can't do anything he just watch me
fall to my death and I there was an old
fixed Pete up in the rock that would put
there from the first ascent an old soft
iron Pete on and I looked at it and I
probably had 15 20 seconds before my
hands would unwrap if that may be Ted I
took a runner and I clipped it into the
Piton I clipped the Pete on into my
heart about that runner into my harness
and just went please hold
and I let go and it helped I put in a
backup
I grabbed the not be tied it went to the
legend convulsion I could I was very
calm at that moment my god to the ledge
I went into convulsive shaking I was
sick to my stomach for days because of
the the whatever happened chemically
what I learned from that is two things
the first is that when you're in an
unforgiving world gravity is unforgiving
it doesn't care it never takes a day off
ever and if you make one mistake it can
kill you if it's the wrong kind of state
and what I learned is that sense of yeah
I want to do adventurous things I want
to climb rocks I want to be in Yosemite
I want to do things that get my
adrenaline going
I but I need the discipline to always do
all the right preparation to always
think about the right nuts to always be
cross-checking my system so that I can
do those bold things and stay alive in
an unforgiving environment and as you
and I spoke about earlier today I think
that's the
so I think we are all heading into an
unforgiving environment where we're
going to have to be both bold and
disciplined the second thing I learned
what if that Piton had not been there we
might not be here together it was just
by chance but that piton was right there
and once you realize when you rewind the
tape of your own life is that there are
these crucial moments where if the luck
had gone the other way you might have
gotten killed and so what you have to do
is to always be X putting those extra
disciplines in place because I was lucky
to live and what I took from that is I
never want to have to be lucky to live
again I want to live because of my
discipline not because of my walk can
you keep an attitude of doing it all and
doing it now how can you make the choice
of discipline over procrastination how
can you stay focused on your ambition
how can you avoid conversations at the
water cooler
you can keep your focus on your work you
can get it done today instead of
tomorrow you've got to really work on
your consistent self-discipline on a
daily basis or you'll find yourself
distracted distracted by negative
thoughts distracted by negative people
distracted by water-cooler chatter and
pretty soon depending on the type of
people you've associated with distracted
by your doubt within yourself never
underestimate the power of influence and
association and never underestimate the
power of your own consistent
self-discipline as you know my story I
met someone was I was 25 years old his
name was Earl show who dropped into my
life at an extraordinary time so
keyphrase timing has a lot to do with it
and who knows part of the mystery of
time the timing part of the timing one I
was I just had that experience that I've
shared in other seminars when the Girl
Scout knocked on my door and I walked to
the door and she gives me the big pitch
on the Girl Scout cookies best
organization in the world for girls got
several flavors time to buy the cookies
only two dollars and with a big smile
she very politely asked me to buy no
problem I wanted to buy big problem I
didn't have two dollars in my pocket and
I didn't want to tell her that so I did
what I thought was next best I lied to
her and I said hey look I've already
bought plenty of Girl Scout cookies
we've still got plenty in the house we
haven't eaten yet she said oh that's
wonderful thank you very much and she
leaves when she leaves I say to myself I
don't want to live like this anymore
I mean how low can you get lying to a
Girl Scout
that's low down I told myself that day
this will never happen to me again
one of those experiences it's it's
called like life-changing I said I'm
going to search till I find better
opportunities so my pocket will be empty
in the bank account will be empty and I
won't be so far behind on my promises to
my family and it was shortly after that
I meet Earl show who taught me how to be
wealthy who taught me how to change in
my life so who knows what the connection
is right someone says when the student
is ready the teacher will appear you
know I don't know all the mystery of
that but anyway it seems like some of
those things uniquely happen but it was
mr. show for for a five-year period
before he died at age 49 who taught me
some extraordinarily simple things he
only went to the ninth grade in school
never finished high school never went to
college never went to university so he
put his ideas and his experiences in
very simple language which I think for
me you know kid from the farms of Idaho
that simplicity was so important because
if it would have been technic a lot of
missed it if it would have been missed
it guy and I would have you know backed
away but it was just basic blunt ABC
familiar stuff that I hadn't thought of
before and he did start to remind me and
those ideas change money mr. Joffe was
the one when I said you know this is all
they pay he said you've been working six
years in stirone how come you're not
doing better and I said this is all the
company pays he says well that's not
true I said no this is my paycheck this
is all the company pays he said no this
is all the company pays you I thought
that's a new way to look at it right he
said doesn't the company pay two three
four or five times this amount to other
people I said well yes he said well then
this is not all the company pays it's
all they pay you and if you qualified
wouldn't your income grow to three four
or five times it's at I suppose so he
said we don't have to work on the
company we have to work on you see that
was the beginning of what he called the
phrase personal development I told him
things cost too much he said no you
can't afford him I thought well that's a
new concept I haven't thought about that
you know we put some of the valuable
things on the high shelf so you can't
get to until you qualify if you want the
things on the higher shelf you got to
stand on the books you read every book
you read you get to stand a little
higher so you can get the things on a
higher shelf see I learned those
concepts it was so incredible and here
was the most important one success is
something you attract by the person you
become see that phrase changed my life
success is something you attract by the
person you become success is not
something you pursue it's like taking a
butterfly you can't quite catch it
success is something you attract by
becoming an attractive person see those
were new concepts to me I'm just working
hard trying to make a living here's what
he said to me this changed my life I got
a chance to teach this in Moscow and
across Russia three visits now before
here's what chef taught me profits are
better than wages nobody taught me that
in high school nobody taught me that I
went to one year of college nobody
taught me profits are better than wages
wages make you a living profits make you
a fortune and how could you work on both
a living end of fortune he said well you
could start part-time working on your
fortune while you're working full-time
on your living I thought
all now he said it's fun to get up in
the morning not just getting up go to
work to pay the rent but to get up to go
to work to make a fortune first to make
a living for my family second to make a
fortune and he taught me how to make
both a living and a fortune guess what I
did I learned how to make both a living
in a fortune and I found out anybody
could do it
once they get the information and at age
25 I started receiving this
extraordinary information here's what he
said your income is directly related to
your philosophy not to the economy I
thought no one ever told me that I kept
hoping the economy would change he said
no your philosophy has to change I
assured him that I had my fingers
crossed he said that won't help
then what could I do to change my income
and multiplied by 2 but 3 by 5 by 10 and
then multiplied by 10 again what could I
do and he started giving me the
disciplines in the process of learning
the skills to change my life this was an
extraordinary man those were
extraordinary times for me life's
changing in every manner that you can
imagine but very simple ABC concept
here's I learned not to search for the
exotic until you've discovered the basic
and those basic philosophies that he
shared with me during that time were
life-changing and he called it personal
development
