that I have greatly sinned

- A reading from the Book of Genesis.
God put Abraham to the test.
He called to him, Abraham.
Here I am, he replied.
Then God said,
Take your son Isaac, your only one, whom you love,
and go to the land of Moriah.
There you shall offer him up as a holocaust
on a height that I will point out to you.
When they came to the place of which God had told him,
Abraham built an altar there and arranged the wood on it.
Then he reached out and took the knife to slaughter his son.
But the Lord's messenger called to him from heaven,
Abraham, Abraham.
Here I am, he answered.
Do not lay your hand on the boy, said the messenger.
Do not do the least thing to him.
I know now how devoted you are to God,
since you did not withhold from me your own beloved son.
As Abraham looked about,
he spied a ram caught by its horns in the thicket.
So he went and took the ram
and offered it up as a holocaust in place of his son.
Again the Lord's messenger called to Abraham
from heaven and said,
I swear by myself, declares the Lord,
that because you acted as you did
in not withholding from me your beloved son,
I will bless you abundantly
and make your descendants as countless
as the stars of the sky and the sands of the seashore,
your descendants shall take possession
of the gates of their enemies,
and in your descendants all the nations of the earth
shall find blessing
all this because you obeyed my command.

- A reading from the letter of St. Paul to the Romans.
Brothers and sisters,
If God is for us, who can be against us?
He who did not spare his own Son
but handed him over for us all,
how will he not also give us everything else along with him?
Who will bring a charge against God's chosen ones?
It is God who acquits us, who will condemn?
Christ Jesus it is who died or, rather, was raised,
who also is at the right hand of God,
who indeed intercedes for us.

- A reading from the holy gospel according to Mark.
- [Congregation] Glory to you oh Lord.
- Jesus took Peter, James, and John
and led them up a high mountain apart by themselves.
And he was transfigured before them,
and his clothes became dazzling white,
such as no fuller on earth could bleach them.
Then Elijah appeared to them along with Moses,
and they were conversing with Jesus.
Then Peter said to Jesus in reply,
Rabbi, it is good that we are here,
Let us make three tents,
one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.
He hardly knew what to say, they were so terrified.
Then a cloud came, casting a shadow over them,
and from the cloud came a voice,
This is my beloved Son.
Listen to him.
Suddenly, looking around, they no longer saw anyone
but Jesus alone with them.
As they were coming down from the mountain,
he charged them not to relate what they had seen to anyone,
except when the Son of Man had risen from the dead.
So they kept the matter to themselves,
questioning what rising from the dead meant.
The Gospel of the Lord.
- [Congregation] Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.
- It does not happen much these days,
because we take pictures with our phones,
but, back in the long ancient history
when we used to have cameras,
and occasionally we would forget to wind the film,
we would get a double exposure.
So, we would see one image on top of another image.
And sometimes we would laugh because it seemed funny.
And sometimes we would say,
oh I missed that perfect shot that I had.
That happens in a couple of ways
in the readings this weekend.
You didn't notice it in the first reading
because two verses were missing.
In our lectionary, of course, we get edited
sections of scripture, partly because the church knows
we can't hear too much at once.
But, verse seven and eight were missing
in the story about Abraham and Isaac.
They are important verses, because they're part of where
the double exposure comes.
ohn their way up the mountain, Isaac looks at his father
Abraham, and says, but father there is no lamb here.
And Abraham says back to his son,
God himself will provide for the sacrifice.
Well, because we missed that verse in there,
maybe you didn't see the double exposure.
That's important to remember because if you don't remember
that Abraham is acting out of faith, acting out of already
knowing that God provides what he needs,
if we didn't catch that, it might just look like
God was being cruel.
But the story of Abraham and Issac is really
a story about how Abraham's faith
has already lead him up the mountain,
how he already knows that God himself will provide.
We get a different kind of double exposure
in the gospel, as we see Jesus transfigured
we get a glimpse of Easter a long time
before we know that Easter is even coming.
That's why those disciples pondered what it meant
to rise from the dead.
They had no intellectual way to comprehend
what was going to happen to Jesus.
But, we know in our knowing of the gospels
that the passion, death and resurrection
are all part of one event we call it in our faith
the paschal mystery.
Sometimes we feel more like we're in the passion with Jesus.
Sometimes we feel like we're dying on the cross with Jesus.
And sometimes, thanks be to God,
we feel like we are rising with Jesus.
Those aren't three separate things,
but they're part of one mystery.
So, this double exposure that we get
while Jesus is in his earthly ministry
that reveals something about the glory
that will be revealed fully when he rises from the dead,
is a glimpse of glory mean to encourage us.
Think about the double exposures in your life.
They happen all the time.
We sometimes suffer but know that God is with us,
like Abraham knowing that even though we can't see
the end of something, we know God will provide.
We sometimes get that glimpse of Easter glory
even before we know we're going to suffer.
In it all, God is present.
And as we gather at the table of the Lord,
we dwell in that paschal mystery of Jesus,
his passion, death, resurrection from the dead,
and the sending of the Spirit that church
is always celebrating.
This season of lent is still new,
but I invite you to dip into that paschal mystery
in your own lives even as we saw
the double exposures in our readings,
find them, because they provide
an imprint for the pattern of each of our lives.
Together, let us profess our faith.

of all things visible and invisible.
I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ,
the ohnly Begotten Son of God,
born of the Father before all ages.
God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God,
begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father;
through him all things were made.
For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven,
and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary,
and became man.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate,
he suffered death and was buried,
and rose again on the third day
in accordance with the Scriptures.
He ascended into heaven and is seated
at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead
and his kingdom will have no end.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father and the Son,
who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified,
who has spoken through the prophets.
