Peter proceeded to speak and said,
"You know what has happened all over Judea,
"beginning in Galilee after the baptism that John preached,
"how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth
"with the Holy Spirit and power.
"He went about doing good
"and healing all those oppressed by the devil,
"for God was with him.
"We are witnesses of all that he did
"both in the country of the Jews and in Jerusalem.
"They put him to death by hanging him on a tree.
"This man God raised on the third day
"and granted that he be visible,
"not to all the people but to us,
"the witnesses chosen by God in advance,
"who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead.
"He commissioned us to preach to the people
"and testify that he is the one appointed by God
"as judge of the living and the dead.
"To him all the prophets bear witness,
"that everyone who believes in him

Brothers and sisters,
if then you were raised with Christ,

- The Lord be with you. - And with your spirit.
- A reading from the holy gospel according to John.
- [Congregation] Glory to you, Lord.
- On the first day of the week,
Mary of Magdala came to the tomb
early in the morning while it was still dark
and saw the stone removed from the tomb.
So she ran and went to Simon Peter
and to the other disciple whom Jesus loved and told them,
"They have taken the Lord from the tomb,
"and we do not know where they have put him."
Peter and the other disciple went out and came to the tomb.
They both ran but the other disciple ran faster than Peter
and arrived at the tomb first.
He bent down and saw the burial cloths there
but did not go in.
When Simon Peter arrived after him,
he went into the tomb and saw the burial cloths there,
and the cloth that had covered his head,
not with the burial cloths
but rolled up in a separate place.
Then the other disciple also went in,
the one who had arrived at the tomb first,
and he saw and believed.
For they did not yet understand the scripture
that he had to rise from the dead.
The gospel of the Lord.

- Again we wish all you here present, and
listening today, seeing us on television
a very blessed and a happy Easter.
It's a time of joy for us, isn't it?
Spring starts especially early this year for us
when Easter's so early,
and we see new life, new hope, new promise.
We have the opportunity to celebrate that in so many ways.
I know as a young boy one our of big things
was to go to Atlantic City on
Easter Sunday afternoon after mass
and to parade around with all the
mothers and aunts and cousins hats
so that they could be very proud of
a new life, a new spring, a new hope.
Kind of was a devotional thing in a sense
that we believed in bringing a new life
into our own existence after a harsh winter.
Today the message is very puzzling.
I hadn't thought about it in all these years about
two men and a women running to a tomb
and finding it empty.
This is our message of hope today.
Puzzling but very profound.
We are runners.
Those disciples are runners, and we continue to be runners.
Running after the affection of our spouse,
running after the affection of our
children and friends, maybe even strangers,
running to seek love sometimes destructively
sometimes hopefully,
running to seek security in our lives
and finding that the unexplained
and uncontrollable cannot be secured.
We run for prominence
and for success and sometimes fail.
We are people who run
to grasp at something we cannot hold.
But today the message is an amazing message.
We don't run after the Lord.
There's an empty tomb.
He runs to us the risen Lord.
The one who died and was laid in a tomb comes to us
in his risen presence and promises eternal life,
life with him forever.
That presence comes to us first of all through his call.
We'll later hear in the scriptures that
he called Mary Magdalene by name.
He calls each one of us by name.
She recognizing his voice
as we should in faith respond, "Rabboni"
my teacher, my model, my loved one.
He comes to us through the closed doors
that the disciples in the upper room had,
closed doors that are ones of isolation and fear
and he extends to us peace.
That peace which gives a sense of consolation,
a sense of hope, a sense of trust in our lives with God.
It is a peace in which it is Christ himself
that is present among us
and which gives us a sense of confidence.
Today that peace given to us
is a peace that the world cannot give
because it's Jesus Christ the risen one.
We celebrate that moment
and that time and this moment
in our time of the risen presence of the Lord.
"Peace", he says to us this morning.
"As the Father has sent me
"so I send you to proclaim the gift I have given you."
My dear, brothers and sisters
to the paschal mystery we have been
buried with Christ in baptism,
so that we may walk with him in the newness of life.
Now that our Lenten observance is concluded
let us renew the promises of our baptism,
holy baptism by which we renounce Satan and his works
and promise to serve God and his holy church,
and so I now ask you
do you renounce sin
so as to live in the freedom of the children of God?
- [Congregation] I do.
- Do you renounce the lure of evil
so that sin may have no mastery over you?
- [Congregation] I do.
- Do you renounce Satan, the author and prince of peace?
- [Congregation] I do.
- Do you believe in God the Father Almighty
creator of Heaven and Earth?
- [Congregation] I do.
- Do you believe in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord
who was born of the virgin Mary,
suffered death and was buried, rose from the dead
and is now seated at the right hand of the Father?
- [Congregation] I do.
- Do you believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body and life everlasting?
- [Congregation] I do.
- May Almighty God the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ
who has given us new birth by water and the Holy Spirit
and bestowed on us the forgiveness of our sins
keep us by his grace in Christ Jesus
our Lord for eternal life.
- [Congregation] Amen.
- This is the day the Lord has made.
