- In the name of the father and of the son
and of the holy spirit, the Lord be with you.
One of the loveliest stories in the gospel
is the story of how the risen Jesus joined
two of his disciples on the road to Emmaus.
He explained the scriptures to them
and revealed himself in the breaking of the bread,
and the same thing happens for us
when we celebrate the Eucharist,
so let us take a moment to prepare ourselves
for this celebration of God's presence
among us in word and sacrament.
Lord Jesus, you are our companion on our journey of faith.
Lord, have mercy.
- [Congregation] Lord, have mercy.
- Christ Jesus, you speak to us
when the scriptures are read.
Christ, have mercy.
- [Congregation] Christ, have mercy.
- Lord Jesus, you nourish us
with the blood of the Eucharist.
Lord, have mercy.
- [Congregation] Lord, have mercy.
- May almighty God have mercy on us,
forgive us our sins, and bring us to life everlasting.
- [Congregation] Amen.
- Glory to God in the highest,
and on earth, peace to people of goodwill.
We praise you, we bless you, we adore you,
we glorify you, we give you thanks for your great glory.
Lord God, heavenly king, O God almighty father,
Lord Jesus Christ, only begotten son,
Lord God, Lamb of God, son of the father,
you take away the sins of the world.
Have mercy on us.
You take away of the sins of the world.
Receive our prayer.
You are seated at the right hand of the father.
Have mercy on us, for you alone are the holy one,
you alone are the Lord, you alone are the most high,
Jesus Christ, with the holy spirit,
in the glory of God the father, amen.
Let us pray.
May your people exalt forever O God
in renewed youthfulness of spirit
so that rejoicing now in the restored glory of our adoption,
we may look forward in confident hope
to the rejoicing of the day of resurrection.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your son,
who lives and reigns with you
in the unity of the holy spirit,
one God forever and ever, amen.
- A reading from the Acts of the Apostles.
Then Peter stood up with the Eleven
raised his voice and proclaimed,
"You who are Jews, indeed all of you staying in Jerusalem,
let this be known to you and listen to my words.
You who are Israelites hear these words.
Jesus the Nazarene was man commended to you by God
with mighty deeds, wonders, and signs,
which God worked through him in your midst,
as you yourselves know.
This man, delivered up by the set plan
and foreknowledge of God, you killed,
using lawless man to crucify him, but God raised him up,
releasing him from the throes of death,
because it was impossible for him to be held by it.
For David says of him,
I saw the Lord ever before me,
with him at my right hand I shall not be disturbed.
Therefore, my heart has been glad and tongue has exalted.
My flesh, too, will dwell in hope
because you will not abandon my soul to the nether world,
nor will you suffer your body,
your holy one to see corruption.
You have made known to me the paths of life.
You will fill me with joy in your presence.
My brothers, one can confidently say to you
about the patriarch, David, that he died and was buried,
and his tomb is in our midst to this day,
but since he was a prophet
and knew that God had sworn an oath to him,
that he would set one of his descendants upon his throne.
He foresaw and spoke of the resurrection of the Christ
that neither was he abandoned to the nether world
nor did his flesh see corruption.
God raised this Jesus, of this we are all witnesses.
Exalted at the right hand of God,
he received the promise of the holy spirit from the father
and poured it forth, as you see and hear."

Beloved, if you invoke as father

- A reading from the holy gospel according to Luke.
- [Congregation] Glory to the Lord.
- That very day, the first day of the week,
two of Jesus' disciples were going to a village
seven miles from Jerusalem called Emmaus
and they were conversing about
all the things that had occurred,
and it happened that while they were conversing and debating
Jesus himself drew near and walked with them,
but their eyes were prevented from recognizing him.
He asked them, "What are you discussing as you walk along?"
They stopped, looking downcast.
One of them named Cleopas said to him in reply,
"Are you the only visitor to Jerusalem
who does not know of the things
that have taken place there in these days?"
And he replied to them, "What sort of things?"
They said to him, "The things that happened
to Jesus the Nazarene, who was a prophet mighty indeed
in word before God and all the people,
how our chief priests and rulers both handed him over
to a sentence of death and crucified him,
but we were hoping that he would be
the one to redeem Israel and besides all this,
it is now the third day since this took place.
Some women from our group, however, have astounded us.
They were at the tomb early in the morning
and did not find his body.
They came back and reported that they had indeed
seen a vision of angels who announced that he was alive.
Then, some of those with us went to the tomb
and found things just as the women had described,
but him, they did not see."
And he said to them, "Oh, how foolish you are.
How slow of heart to believe all that the prophets spoke.
Was it not necessary that the Christ
should suffer these things and enter into his glory?"
Then beginning with Moses and all the prophets,
he interpreted to them what referred to him
in all the scriptures.
As they approached the village to which they were going,
he gave the impression that he was going on farther,
but they urged him, "Stay with us,
for it is nearly evening and the day is almost over."
So he went in to stay with them,
and it happened that while he was with them at table,
he took bread, said the blessing,
broke it, and gave it to them.
With that, their eyes were opened and they recognized him,
but he vanished from their sight.
Then they said to each other, "Were not our hearts
burning within us while he spoke to us on the way
and opened scriptures to us?"
So they set out at once and returned to Jerusalem
where they found gathered together the Eleven
and those with them who were saying,
"The Lord has been truly raised and has appeared to Simon."
Then, the two recounted what had taken place on the way
and how he was made known to them
in the breaking of the bread.
The gospel of the Lord.
Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.
This is one of my favorite gospel readings,
because it gives prefiguring to what we celebrate here.
Jesus was talking with them about the scriptures.
We have our liturgy of the word.
We listen to our stories from our ancient history
and then we break open the word with one another,
and then he celebrated with them a meal,
sat with them at table, and he did what we call
the fourfold action of the Eucharist.
What Jesus did at that table is what he did
at the Last Supper, is what he does with us this very day.
He took the bread, he said the blessing,
he broke the bread, and he gave it.
We do that very same thing here.
We take the bread, say the blessing,
break the bread, and give it,
and notice that it was in giving that bread
to his disciples that their eyes were opened.
See, the power of the Eucharist,
Christ did not leave them when he vanished from their sight.
He was with them in that action
of the breaking of the bread.
And so when we think about it, I kind of, you know,
try and put myself as what would it have been like
to have been those two disciples.
Can you imagine how foolish they must have thought
afterwards, spending that time with Jesus
and not being able to recognize him,
but then recognizing him with the breaking of the bread?
And with that, he left them in the way
they were familiar with seeing him,
in the physical body, his physical risen body,
but he was with them in another way,
and that way that he was with the disciples
and the breaking of the bread is the way
that he continues to be with us.
What a great gift that God gives us.
So these disciples, their eyes were opened,
and then they had to go and do something about it.
They had to proclaim it others,
that indeed they had an experience then
of that resurrected Christ,
'cause you know in scriptures,
there's not anybody who saw him come out of the grave.
It's all about these encounters
with Christ after the resurrection.
So my brothers and sisters, when we think about it,
what those early disciples encountered
with Jesus after the resurrection,
and not fully knowing what was going on,
and we're given the benefit of knowing what's going on,
so as we recognize him in this breaking of the bread,
may we always recognize him in all the other ways
that he makes himself known to us in one another,
in the mass, in the priest that presides
at our Eucharist in the name of Christ.
In the word proclaimed, Christ is present.
In the assembly gathered together, Christ is present,
'cause he said, "Wherever two or three gather in my name,
I am in their midst," and he wasn't joking.
And then most substantially, body, blood, soul and divinity,
the totality of our God comes among us in the Eucharist
and humbly shares himself with us
so that as St. Augustine said,
that we may become what we receive,
we may become the Eucharist,
and then be able to recognize Christ
not only in the breaking of the bread here,
but in the many ways that he makes himself
known to us in the world, as well.
Together, we profess our faith using the Apostles' Creed.
I believe in God, the father almighty,
creator of heaven and earth,
and in Jesus Christ, his only son our Lord,
who was conceived by the holy spirit,
born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried.
He descended into hell.
On the third day, he rose again from the dead.
He ascended into heaven
and is seated at the right hand of God, the father almighty.
From there, he will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the holy spirit, the holy Catholic church,
the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body and life everlasting, amen.
