Waching daily Jan 31 2017

Our motto is local first, so our goal is to source locally from farmers that are right

here in the 50-60 mile radius of Chattanooga that grow food and grow food sustainably.

We want to save that time for folks and allow them to do what they really love.

We are packing out our boxes today.

All of the fruit and vegetables that are coming today

are getting delivered straight to people's doors.

"Come with me Harold."

"OK! Ok, I'm coming!"

"These bags right here, once you see a label on them right here,

I need them to go in that room."

We actually came here because we heard that they have got some individuals, and we thought

what a great opportunity to integrate these folks with the community

and be able to provide them with a job.

"We need five people for the Seed bags, OK?"

They loved the idea that we were willing to hire some of their individuals.

In that same conversation, they said, "You know, we've got this storage room.

"It's got some stuff in it, but we're willing to empty it out, and we could give you a really

"good deal to come be in our space, and our individuals could just walk over."

We walked out of there and we knew this was the place for us, that this was the type of

partnership that we were looking for.

"All right, just a reminder guys, remember to just check your bag when it gets to you.

"Make sure that everything before you is in the bag.

"Also, make sure that your item is fresh and looks good, and we want to make the bags as

pretty as possible, so when the client opens it, it's dazzling."

We love Leigh Ann.

She's got a really sweet spirit about her, and she loves packing.

That's her favorite thing to do.

"You've got two jobs?"

Yes!

"You're a busy lady."

Oh yes!

"So what do you do with all that money that you make?"

Well, some of it goes to pay my bills and some of it is to spend.

(Laughter)

I was working at the recycling, and then I moved.

It was real dirty, and it made my nose stop up.

(Humming)

Harold we just hired more recently.

He is amazing.

He is such a go-getter.

He requires actually very little direction.

"That was a good pepper!

It sure was!"

I like to read too!

"What kinds of things do you read?"

Any kind of books.

When he's done with his job, he will often go look for something to do, and he'll pick

up a broom and start sweeping.

"Uh oh, you're out of peppers!

Harold's out of peppers anyway!"

"Thank you!"

I have family in Knoxville.

They came one day.

We showed 'em around and explained how this works.

"How does it feel to get to show that to your family?

Does that make you proud?"

Oh yes!

It makes me very happy.

It's been wonderful!

We could not do a great part of what we do without their contribution on a weekly basis.

Racism is a Mental Health Issue - Duration: 5:21.

- This is America, and you get it right the first time.

You get it right the first time.

Get it right the first time.

Get it right the first time, okay?

- [Narrator] What if racism was a mental health issue?

I mean think about it,

racists suffer from their own kind of PTSD.

Their symptoms include agitation.

(car honking loudly)

- Terrorist-fucking cocksucker.

- [Narrator] And irritability.

- You got immigration paper?

Fucking cockroach.

- [Narrator] Hostility.

- Go back to wherever the fuck you come from, lady.

- [Narrator] Hypervigilance.

- Don't you hate when you're inside a store,

and the cashier starts following you like.

She think I'm stealing.

She think I'm stealing.

Look.

- [Narrator] Social isolation.

(imitates monkey whooping)

- Fucking lazy monkeys.

Maybe the 10th one I've seen in my life too.

- [Narrator] Clearly liberals aren't the only ones

that are triggered but by what?

- Let's get something straight.

A bunch of sore losers occupying a space

is called a tantrum, and that's exactly what we're seeing

around the nation after Trump's historic and earned victory.

- Hail, Trump.

Hail, victory.

(audience clapping and cheering)

- [Narrator] Well, the United States is traumatized

by its origins in slavery and genocide,

and that trauma hasn't ended.

We were taught in school

that because of some brave people's sacrifices

that our society has become more and more just

and equal over time.

Has it?

- The Cleveland police department is now responding

to a wrongful death lawsuit

by blaming a 12-year-old boy for his own death.

- I can't breathe.

I can't breathe.

I can't breathe.

(gun banging)

- [Narrator] Slavery ended but today,

one in 15 black men are incarcerated.

Many in private prisons

where they perform labor for pennies.

- Hi.

- [Narrator] We thought we were done colonizing native lands

but Standing Rock proves otherwise.

- [Woman] And everyone is just standing

right where they're at and survived.

(gun bangs)

- [Narrator] We apologized for interning Japanese-Americans

but it seems like Trump would like to do the same thing

to Muslim Americans.

- Donald J. Trump is calling for a total

and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States.

Islam hates us.

- [Narrator] We've coped with these contradictions

by describing history as a march towards freedom

because the reality is too painful to face.

The reality is that our racial history doesn't tell

a story of progress but of PTSD,

and every new racist episode is like a flashback.

- Racism was defined by the President's Joint Council

on Mental Health in Children in 1959

as being the number one mental health problem among children

in the United States.

- [Narrator] So am I just saying that people

who demand racist and xenophobic agendas

are just mentally ill?

Yeah, but that doesn't let them off the hook.

We can hold alcoholics accountable for drunk driving

while still encouraging them to seek help.

We can hold veterans with PTSD accountable

for domestic violence while still sympathizing

with their painful condition.

And we could hold racists accountable.

We need to hold racists accountable

for their actions and their violence

at the same time that we try to treat

and heal our country's racist affliction,

so let's talk about solutions.

Well, first off, starting conversations about race

and racism is not enough.

Robin DiAngelo describes white fragility

as defensiveness about race.

- I'm 15% Sub-Saharan African, and 80% European.

Wow.

- [Narrator] Open discussion about race is denied.

That denial looks like arguing.

- When we're talking about diversity,

you do it in the casting of the film,

not in the casting of the show.

- Hoo.

Wow, okay.

- [Narrator] Silencing.

- This is so egregious.

It would be so outrageous.

The judge could stand.

That's what you want.

- Cory, you're being a horrible person right now.

Let me finish.

- If this was Donald Trump.

- [Narrator] Running away.

So even if we want to have a conversation,

we're not gonna get one.

Psychotherapists employ exposure therapy.

Control the ways to confront the trauma

rather than avoiding reminders of it.

We need to face it and each other head on,

so let's take lessons from psychotherapy

to heal through protest.

Well, that means we have to revisit the trauma.

- [Reporter] Protesters gather to create signs,

and assemble a symbolic funeral service in march

in memory of 12-year-old Tamir Rice

who was shot and killed by a Cleveland police officer.

- [Narrator] We have to speak about it explicitly

over and over again.

- Say her name.

(protesters chanting)

- Say her name.

(protesters chanting)

- Say her name.

(protesters chanting)

- [Narrator] We have to confront

all these distressing situations.

(chanting)

- [Narrator] Because racism will always repeat

until we interrupt it.

We need you to be strong, not fragile.

That means not letting your uncle or friends

off the hook for their racism.

You wouldn't abandon them if they had a mental illness.

What I'm saying is uncomfortable,

and it'll likely get pretty ugly

but confronting them is how you help them.

We have to stop thinking of racism as a formal position.

This person is racist.

That thing is racist.

It's a pathology, and it values white lives over others.

The "All Lives Matter" Crowd Is Silent About Trump's Travel Ban - Duration: 2:35.

I'm sure everybody remembers when we were watching black men and women mowed down in

the streets by police officers.

The Black Lives Matter movement arose.

Republicans were very quick to jump on television, jump on Twitter, jump on Facebook and tell

us all lives matter, not just the black lives.

What a racist movement this is.

That's all we heard from them for a very long time, all lives matter.

I guess they should have put a little asterisk at the end of that because apparently to a

Republican all lives don't matter because where is the Republican opposition to Donald

Trump's Muslim ban?

We have tens of thousands of people right now who are just wanting to get in the United

States.

They're not coming over here to attack us.

They're not coming over here to undermine our democracy.

They're not coming over here because they want to hurt us.

They're coming over here because we've bombed the shit out of their homes, and they need

a place to go.

That's why they're coming here.

Those lives matter, but not to Republicans.

No.

Republicans are more than happy to send planes and bombs over to your country, destroy everything

you've known for your entire life.

Then when you come looking for a safe place to go, we shut our doors.

We put up walls, and we say, "Nope, not on my watch.

You're a different color than me.

You believe in a different God than I do.

You can't come in here."

The Muslim ban has further exposed the racism of the Republican Party, but furthermore it's

exposed the fact that this all lives matter movement really was about telling us that

white lives matter.

It had nothing to do with equality.

It had nothing to do with protecting the rights of every single US citizen.

Republicans were simply mad that Black Lives Matter was getting attention, that they were

trying to accomplish something good for this country.

This Muslim ban has shown us that all lives matter for Republicans really just means that

white lives matter.

Cedar Commissions Spotlight: Ritika Ganguly - Duration: 3:55.

I'm Ritika Ganguly, and I'm one of The Cedar Commissions 2017 artists

and I'm going to be presenting my new musical work, which is really a place where poem meets song

I am going to be looking at - actually, I've always been interested in the inherent, intrinsic playful quality of words

And so I'm sort of exploring that aspect of written and oral literature for this project

And looking at the emotive content of words, the playfulness between words

And I'm also sort of translating that into music, so if I had to read a poem in my way, and personally interpret it

What would the musical output sound like?

[music]

My collaborators Nathalie Ramírez and Nikhil Mawkin have brought this project to life

Nikhil is going to be on the acoustic guitar and he has brought in a lot of rhythms,

African and Latin and Afro-Cuban rhythms into the project

Nathalie has interpreted the project for the Bansuri and for the Western Flute

And it's just a brilliant collaboration
