- We want to wish everyone today a blessed
and a very successful new year with health,
both spiritual and physical,
and success in the sense of finding God
more deeply in your lives.
We come today, I'm sure, kind of getting over last evening,
and trying to put it all together again.
Many people make resolutions during this time,
and significant ones.
So it's a good time to look at our lives,
kind of sense what we are all about,
and try to focus on our future.
One of the things today we do as we begin the year,
is to really kind of venerate and to sense
the miracle of the Mother of God,
because it is, really, a symbol of the church.
We start off this time of year with a celebration of Mary,
a celebration of the symbol of Mary the church.
Mary, a mother. Mother is an exceptional person.
They have a sense of intimacy and uncompromising love
and a strength that sometimes is unbelievable.
It is in that sense that we recognize that maternal bond,
which each mother has for its child.
One which is broken only by death.
So today we see that love of a mother.
Mary, mother of God.
We're told today that when she heard and saw
those things in her life she pondered them.
She pondered what God's meaning was for her.
We're called to that in our resolutions today.
What's God's meaning for us?
Like Mary, we look at the Word, the living Word,
which is her Son and with a sense of faith,
and a sense of commitment we follow Him
as she did in her maternal bond of love
in His life, His mission, and His sacrifice on the cross.
It is Mary's goodness and that sense of faith
and faithfulness and that sense of strength
that we look at and understand brings about
change and transformation.
If brings about a change in Mary's life.
For all the things she was asked in her motherhood,
was totally unexpected,
particularly at the foot of the cross.
So today we recognize our resolutions have to have
that goodness and strength of God
that His plan will always be significant
and changing in our lives.
Today then, we can look at our lives,
see it, and say what is God's will for us?
How can we show our thanksgiving for Him?
Like Mary, I think we have to have three things.
I use the old Baltimore Catechism.
To know Jesus. To know Him authentically and intimately,
to allow Him to come in your life with grace and hope.
To love Jesus in a sense of a passionate way
in which everything else becomes meaningless.
That takes a whole life to do that.
But that's what's expected.
That we may see His word as transforming
and changing us into Him.
Finally, to serve Him.
To serve Him and the people that he places before us.
Hidden, sometimes forgotten, people that,
in our own family, we have not considered
and yet we must consider as important and significant.
That we may treat them and serve them with love,
respect, and care.
Today, a mother's love.
The power of that love is Her intercession for us.
The power of Her love is the grace of Christ
into our hearts.
- [Parish] I believe in one God,
the Father almighty,
maker of heaven and earth,
of all things visible and invisible.
I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ,
the only begotten Son of God,
born of the Father before all ages,
God from God,
Light from Light,
true God from true God,
begotten, not made,
consubstantial with the Father.
Through him all things were made.
For us men and for our salvation
he came down from heaven;
by the power of the Holy Spirit he was incarnate
of the virgin Mary,
and became man.
For our sake, He was crucified under Pontius Pilate;
He suffered death and was buried,
and rose again on the third,
in accordance with the Scriptures.
He ascended into heaven
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory
to judge the living and the dead,
and His kingdom will have no end.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the Lord, the giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father and the Son,
who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified,
and who has spoken through the prophets.
I believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church.
I confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.
I look forward to the resurrection of the dead,
and the life of the world to come. Amen.
