<Troll Giggle>
dude really during the unboxing.
Chuck your gnome not a troll!
Hey welcome back to the channel alright I am gonna give this Windows
mixed reality thing another try and everything I talk about in this video is
gonna be down in the description I'm gonna have the headset that I'm
reviewing today and the one that I reviewed a little while ago... you know
what scratch it I'm not gonna put the one I reviewed a little while ago I'll
put a link up here if you want to see that review it was not a pretty
experience and it's not a fault of Windows Mixed Reality that is a fault of
that hardware it did not work very well. Now if you don't know what Windows
Mixed Reality is that's Microsoft's foray into virtual reality and it's different
than like the Oculus Rift or the HTC Vive where those two systems they
provide the hardware the software the drivers all that stuff, in Windows Mixed
Reality, Microsoft provides the framework and it's built into Windows 10 so you
don't have to load any extra software and then there's manufacturers like HP
and Acer and Samsung and the one we're gonna be looking at today the Lenovo
Explorer they provide the hardware so the headset and the controllers and
because everything is built into Windows 10 the setup is super easy. Basically
these headsets have one cable with two connectors on it there's a USB and the
HDMI cable that plugs into the HDMI port on your card and then you can go into
the setup it's super easy to get these up and going.
So this headset is actually really comfortable the padding is really good
on it it stays really snuggly once you get it on your head correctly but that's
kind of the weird part it's a little weird how it goes about it it has a knob
on the back and you turn it one way to loosen it, obviously, you turn it the
other way to crank it in that kind of feels like you're putting your head in a
vise when you put it on there and crank it down but what I found is you don't
have to crank it onto your head really really hard just get the the screens
centered on your eyes so that you have a clear view of the screens and then get
it tightened just so it sits on there it's not going to come off it's a pretty
snug fit and you know I've played some pretty intensive games I've never had
the thing slip off my my head and the nice thing about these headsets is you
can flip up the screens or flip up the headset without taking it off your head
to see the world around you if you need to work on the computer or talk to
somebody the next part is the screens and in theory the windows mix reality
headsets have better optics than the HTC vive or the oculus rift they have a
higher resolution so like the lenovo explorer has a 1440 by 1440 resolution
per eye by way comparison the oculus rift has a 1080 by 1200 resolution now
it's not all about resolution because there's other parts of the optics that
come into play and the next part is the field of view so the field of view is
basically how much you can see in your peripheral vision so for example this is
a real narrow field of view and there's a real wide field of view it basically
it's just how much you can see on the edges now the lenovo explorer has a
hundred degree field of view or 105 depending on what you read but basically
it's the same or very close to the rift or the vibe as far as field of view it's
very comparable to my rift the next aspect of VR glasses is that sweet spot
now on current generation of VR headsets there's a clear area that you can see
through the lenses to the screens and anything around that area is blurry so
if you don't have the headset adjusted correctly
it's not gonna be as clear as it could and if you don't have that sweet spot
it's not gonna be a good experience the Explorer has that nice field of view and
it has a great sweet spot honestly from just the field of view and the sweet
spot it's very very similar to the oculus rift all right so now onto the
tracking in motion so right now there's two types of tracking for VR headsets
there's outside-in and inside-out so outside-in is what the vibe and the rift
use and that involves sensors that are set up around your room that track the
headset and track the controllers and relay that information back to the
computer obviously but it's tracked through these external sensors you have
to set up those sensors you have to set up your headset and get all that stuff
working now with Windows mix reality that uses inside out tracking so
basically all the tracking is handled from the headset and the controllers
have lights around the top the headset has cameras and sensors in it so
basically what it does is it Maps out your environment and keeps a track of
the controller so it tracks the controllers around and tracked your
movement through the environment the controllers are tracked really well even
if you go back behind your head as long as it doesn't stay back there too long
I'd never really lose tracking the only caveat to this and this is one area that
I like the rift and the vibe much better is with the windows mix reality you have
to have a very well-lit room because some of that tracking is done through
the camera in the headset and if that camera can't see the room it's not gonna
be able to do that tracking and then you only get three degrees of freedom that
way because it's not going to know where you are in that space to know if you're
moving forward or back so you have to have a well-lit room if you're in a
scenario where you know you're sharing the room with the family member or
something like that and the bright lights are going to bother them then
this isn't going to work for you you need to have a very well-lit area for
this to work properly
so now on to the apps and games so if you go to the Microsoft Store there's a
bunch of VR games and apps in there there's not nearly as many as like on
the riff or the the vibe but they are available to adding more all the time
but the cool thing is that steamvr supports the windows mix reality
headsets now not every single game is supported but a lot of the games a very
good majority of the games work really well and they work just as well with
them windows met reality as they do with the the vibe or the rift there's also
ways that you can use your oculus rift games with the windows mix reality
headset there's a little more involved with that it's not officially supported
but it works I've been playing beat Sabre and it
works great so honestly I don't really see the amount of apps that are
available as a limiting factor if there's an app that's not available
currently that you used to use on your rift or your vive and it's not available
for Windows mix reality it's only a matter of time before that's gonna be
available alright so the obvious question isn't worth getting the windows
mixed reality headset over an HTC vive or an oculus rift it depends the windows
mix reality is kind of a generic term so there's different manufacturers make
these different headsets the most expensive one is that the Samsung one
that has a few more features and we'll go into that right now but that's more
expensive because it has more features the cheapest one is the HP one
don't even bother considering that the Lenovo Explorer is only about $40 more
right now it's about 240 u.s. on Amazon totally 100% worth the additional $40
and that's the thing you can get this headset with the good tracking and
everything for 240 bucks whereas the the oculus rift is still 400 I think at this
at this point and the HTC vive is 500 so if you're looking for a budget-friendly
the solution this is a great option if you travel a lot and you're gonna use
the VR when you're traveling the windows mixed reality is definitely the way to
go because you don't have to worry about those external sensors and setting those
up every time it's basically just plug it in walk around your room to map it
out and you're good to go so if you're a traveler and you're taking your headset
with you while you're traveling that's another good reason to get the windows
mixed reality so why would you get the the vibe or the rift honestly those
external sensors do give you better tracking there's issues with the windows
mix reality headset if you like I said if you pull your hand back and then you
know if you're swinging a sword or doing a bow and arrow that's not really an
issue but if you hold your hand back out of the sight of the front of the headset
for too long or you have your hands down at your sides it does lose the tracking
then you got to bring them up and kind of move them around until it tracks
again the other thing is the the fact that you have to have it in that
well-lit room if that if you can't do that if that's gonna be difficult for
you then the windows mix reality is not going to work for you the HTC vive and
oculus rift don't have that problem because they use those external sensors
so in darker environments the rift and the vibe are gonna work better they're
gonna give you a little bit better tracking but they are more expensive so
depending on what your needs are Windows mix reality is an excellent entry into
virtual reality we've never done virtual reality before you still need a computer
with these specs to run it but if you have that and you're looking for an
affordable headset I can definitely recommend the Lenovo Explorer I've been
really happy with it really impressed with it and I'm glad that I gave Windows
mix reality another try thanks so much if you have any questions on anything in
the video please leave comments below I'm happy to answer them if there's
something you want me to try with the the headset leave that below as well
come see me on Twitter Instagram and Facebook I love meeting new people on
there and chatting with them and I will see you in the next video thanks so much

My neighbor is Hare Krishna with subs (мой сосед кришнаит) - Duration: 5:23.
When they raised the price of gas and electricity,
a new neighbor moved into the next-door apartment.
And since then I got weird heartache:
No he is not a crook, a thief, my neighbor - Hare Krishna!
And this song is always heard in his house
All the time: Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna
My friends and me drink beer, smoke weed
Life passes by: soon we are 50 years old.
Our teeth and hands are no longer strong,
we are bored to death - we are already old men!
He does not drink or smoke, he loves cows.
The doctors told me: he has healthy blood!
He is vegetarian to the core.
They told me that in the news program!
And I hear all the time - I can not sleep!
Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna
There was a Premier League match,
and he came and gave me books about Krishna.
I started to look at the pictures, forgot about football,
He told to my old wife Ninka "Hari Bol!"
It means again this song will be heard all the time:
Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna
And really so much truth in these books - even difficult to read!
But if he leave, I really will miss
his morning songs and evening prayers.
I gave up drinking, smoking and my heart does not hurt anymore!
And I agree, may this be heard all the time:
Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna!

BUSTED FBI Finds "Stunning" Clinton Documents, This Is Huge - Duration: 12:16.
Broke Clintons Humiliated After Boarding Delta Flight, Not Treated Like First Class By Other
Passengers
Hillary Clinton is up to something.
It seems she may be gearing up for yet another run at world domination and preparing for
a 2020 presidential run in what will be her third attempt to get to the White House.
In an attempt to appear as just one of the people, Bill and Hillary Clinton were forced
to fly with the unwashed masses on a Delta flight bound to an unknown destination.
A video clip posted to Twitter caught the shady duo sitting in the First Class section.
The clip appears to have been captured across the aisle as others filed down the aisle towards
the coach section of the plane.
The clip ends as Bill looks up, apparently spotting the camera.
Oh, how the mighty have fallen as this is a far cry from traveling in Air Force One,
private jets, or even aboard chartered campaign planes.
It is interesting to note the Clintons can travel freely, unmolested, on a commercial
flight with no security in sight, with no fear of being attacked by conservative critics,
or violence of any kind.
They were not asked to leave or refused service in any way.
Meanwhile, Trump administration officials are facing daily harassment by emotionally
unhinged and sometimes violent leftist progressive activists.
Social media is rife with speculation as to just where they might have been traveling,
but all parties seem to agree on one thing – the Clintons are definitely up to something.
Hillary continues to drop pointed messages attempting to convey a sense of urgency, and
they are coming with increasing frequency full of faux outrage at the latest fabricated
atrocity committed by President Donald Trump and his administration.
Some of the messages ask for money.
Yet others urge recipients to participate in various protests.
Five such messages have been sent in just the last month alone, touting her super PAC's
role in combating President Trump and his agenda.
Written as though they are being sent from the official headquarters of the resistance
itself, the messages seize on headline events, such as the current media-created crisis at
the southern border.
Hillary writes on June 18 under the subject line – "horrific" stating – "This
is a moral and humanitarian crisis.
Everyone of us who has ever held a child in their arms, and every human being with a sense
of compassion and decency should be outraged."
Then she harkens back to 2016, proclaiming she warned everyone about President Trump's
immigration policies during the campaign.
Her intended message is clear.
She told America, and America did not listen.
Now we are paying the price.
Just three short days later on June 21, Hillary was back again.
This time with a message about her group – Onward Together and its plan to raise $1 million
explaining the funds would be split among organizations working to change border policy,
including the American Civil Liberties Union and various and sundry immigrant, refugee,
Latino and women's groups.
Just one day after Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy announced his retirement, Hillary
introduced another resistance partner known by the name – Demand Justice.
The group promises to protect "reproductive rights, voting rights and access to health
care" by keeping Senate Democrats united in opposition against any and all conservative
Trump nominees.
Demand Justice is headed up by none other than Hillary's campaign press secretary,
Brian Fallon.
As the New York Post notes, Fallon's role clues us in as to the exact purpose of Onward
Together.
The Super PAC was formed in May 2017 and it appears that it is intended to be a 2020 campaign
vehicle in waiting for Hillary in her third bid for the White House.
The homepage describes the purpose of Onward Together, stating the group "is dedicated
to advancing the vision that earned nearly 66 million votes in the last election."
It seems lack of vision is what kept Hillary out of the White House in the first place.
Well, that and she is a lying liar that holds most of America in abject contempt and she
would not know the truth if it reached out and shook her hand personally.
The New York Post further reveals just why the Democratic party is locked in a power
struggle between its left wing and its radicals –
"With the Democratic Party locked in a battle between its far left wing and it's far,
far left wing, no single leader has emerged to unite it.
Clinton is trying to play that role by being a mother hen to the fledgling activists drawn
to politics by their hatred of Trump.
With the Democratic Party locked in a battle between its far left wing and it's far,
far left wing, no single leader has emerged to unite it.
Clinton is trying to play that role by being a mother hen to the fledgling activists drawn
to politics by their hatred of Trump.
If they were active in 2016, most probably supported Bernie Sanders in his primary challenge
to Clinton.
But by helping to fund them now, she is putting them in her debt for later.
Ah, but will she need their support later?
Is she really going to make a third run for the White House?
Not long ago, I told a group of friends, all liberal Dems, that I believed she was keeping
open the possibility of a rematch against Trump, and might already have decided to run.
It was unanimous — they were horrified.
"I would not give her a single cent," one man, formerly a big donor to Clinton,
said emphatically.
Their reasons are no surprise: Her moment has passed, she was a terrible candidate and
her endless claims of victimhood are tiring rather than inspiring.
It's time to find new blood.
Those assessments are unassailable and certainly are shared by the 20 or so Dems lining up
to take their shot at the nomination.
Moreover, there isn't any clamoring for another Clinton run in Hollywood or other
leftist hotbeds.
They want a new blockbuster, not a sequel to failure."
One would think that Hillary would get the message that America is not interested.
They have passed twice.
No need for a redo.
Yet the case can be made that Hillary may actually have a shot at a third time is the
charm bid for the White House.
Whether she will actually win against President Trump remains to be seen, but I digress.
As Michael Goodwin notes Hillary is not to be ignored for the following reasons –
"First, because there's no clear front-runner for the nomination 18 months into Trump's
presidency, Clinton remains the closest thing to an incumbent.
She's also got numerous advantages, from name recognition to campaign experience to
an off-the-shelf Cabinet, that could give her a head start.
Second, a crowded, diverse field diminishes the chances of anyone knocking her off.
Recall how Trump outlasted 16 GOP rivals by having a committed core of supporters that
grew as the field shrunk.
Clinton could be in a similar position — unpopular among many, but also unbeatable by a single
opponent.
Recall how Trump outlasted 16 GOP rivals by having a committed core of supporters that
grew as the field shrunk.
Clinton could be in a similar position — unpopular among many, but also unbeatable by a single
opponent.
Third, looking ahead to the 2020 primaries, she sees no reason to fear the favorite daughters
and sons in key blue states.
She would almost certainly beat Sen. Kamala Harris in California, Sen. Cory Booker in
New Jersey and Gov. Andrew Cuomo in New York.
And please — forget Sanders and Joe Biden.
Sanders is already 76 and Biden, at 75, has never been a viable candidate for president
and still isn't.
Fourth, money is not an issue.
Some donors will resist Clinton at first, but any Dem nominee can count on all the money
in the world to run against Trump.
To be clear, there are scenarios where Clinton doesn't run.
Health reasons, for example, or a younger rival could rocket to the top of the pack
and become the party's next Barack Obama.
Either way, recurring nightmares of two previous defeats would send her back to wandering through
the Chappaqua woods.

What is a Conventional Loan? || Real Estate Explained #31 - Duration: 3:09.
Hey. This is J. Lucky Henry -- Keller Williams agent in the Greater Boston area.
You won't believe how many questions I get on a daily basis.
Everyday people need answers.
Everyday people need explanations.
That's why everyday people need to get REAL!
R-E-A-L: Real estate Explained Amazingly by Lucky
in 90 seconds -- give or take.
What's up? It's J. Lucky Henry. Welcome back.
We're still talking about different ways you could finance your property.
If you haven't checked out the first two videos in this series --
we talked about FHA and VA loans.
Now we're going to talk about the good old conventional mortgage, right.
Again I'm not a loan officer so you should definitely check with
one of these two in this video link here right.
If you have any questions I have their contact info
and they answer tons of questions about the pre-approval process in this video...
definitely worth to watch.
But wait! Don't go yet!
Let me explain what I know about conventional mortgages
So if you watched the first two videos,
it may seem like wow, FHA VA loan seems so much better.
Why would I ever get a conventional mortgage?
Well it comes with 20% down.
Why would I do that if I can go as low as 0 and 3.5% on a FHA or a VA loan?
See the thing with conventional mortgages is
they can be fixed but they can also be adjustable rates.
So that means if the rates go down during a time, you can lower that rate.
With FHA and VA, you're often locked into those.
Now I know 20% may seem daunting, it may seem like a lot more to put down.
But it offers other advantages.
When you get as high as 20%, right, things like PMI go away.
And if you don't know PMI is again I recommend watching this video or going back.
It's Private Mortgage Insurance.
I'm not gonna want the whole thing now but it's extra cost.
Another benefit to conventional mortgages --
is that because you're putting more down, right, you have more skin in the game.
You have more skin in the game not only to the bank lending you money,
but more skin in the game to the seller.
So your offer to some sellers, actually looks "stronger" because you have
more money at risk than a 3.5% or even 0% down.
And to the bank lending you money -- you have more in the game as well.
So the interest rate that they need to charge you,
becomes a little bit lower:
1. because your loan is smaller, but
2. because you also have more money at stake in the property so you own more equity in your
property right off the bat, right.
So look -- we'll come back tomorrow with the last video in financing.
And this video is gonna be about owner financing.
So what that means is there's no bank involved now --
it's just you wanna sell and how does that work?
So tune in tomorrow and again any questions about pre-approvals
check this video out we linked it here over here...
wherever my assistant put it -- I swear one day I'm gonna figure out where the links go.
But check that video out -- it's huge huge packed full of information.
It's about six minutes long and definitely worth the watch.
This is J. Lucky Henry and I'm here to keep it REAL with you.

Antonio Damasio, What is the strange order of things? - Duration: 5:25.
"The strange order of things" is the title of my new book. The book is
really about the following idea: when we think about cultures and when people ask
the question: how is it that we have cultures, what made cultures be, how do
they come about, the typical answer to this question is to refer to our great
intelligence, to our ability to use language, to our social abilities and so
forth. Of course in order to invent cultures, in order to invent arts and
sciences, moral systems, governance, technology, you name it, it is obvious that
we need to be intelligent and it is all the office that we need to be creative.
But something that is missing in that very straightforward response is the
idea of affect, the idea of feelings, the idea of the emotions and feelings that
drive you to do things. So my take is that in fact what has motivated cultural
invention, cultural developments, is affect, is the process of feeling,
specifically feelings of pain or suffering or feelings of pleasure or
sometimes even just the possibility of pleasure.
Those were the driving forces to create new instruments and new practices that
we describe as cultural. It also happens that feelings and affect in
general are the key monitors of the process of culture. So once there is an
invention that is cultural, that invention is going to stick or not, is
going to remain or not, depending on whether or not it works, and whether or
not it works depends on how we feel about it: is it something that is really
producing positive feelings or something that produces negative feelings. That
is a component. In other words, the negotiation that we do in order to
maintain or discard a cultural invention is not made exclusively on the basis of
knowledge and intellect, it is not on the basis of reasoning alone. In other words
it is not about reason only. It is also about effect, it is also about emotion and
feeling; this is a very important idea. Now, you may ask: why is it strange, why do
I have this "strange order", what does it refer to? Well, it refers to the fact that
when you look at the origins of feeling which I find so important, well I would
say that in order to have feelings we need to have living organisms with
nervous systems, and that's a relatively recent development in the history of
evolution, but then you realize that long before there were nervous systems and
long before there were feelings as such lots of living creatures (in fact very
simple creatures) already had something that could be called pre-cultural or
could be called a foreshadowing of what culture became, and it turns out that
those creatures do not have nervous systems, those creatures have a body, have
life, have homeostatic regulation, but they do not have nervous systems. So the
title "The strange order of things" refers to this very peculiar situation: we have
creatures without nervous systems in which we would not expect to have
enormous abilities in terms of their social life already behaving socially
with strategies of cooperation or conflict for example,
strategies of grouping or separation that would seem to be the
result of a mind which seemed to come from creature with a nervous system, with
an intelligence, and with consciousness that were highly developed, when in fact
what you do have is no mind, no consciousness, no nervous system although
you have intelligence. That is a very critical point. That is the reason why
I talk about the strange order of things and that is something that I discuss in
this new book whose subtitle is "Life feeling and the making of cultures".

What is Game Based Learning? - Duration: 11:21.
From learning new languages to Virtual Reality simulations...stay tuned to number 1 to find
out the impact of video games in learning!
Number 10: Game-Based Learning In Fiction As far as game-based learning goes, Ender's
Game, the 1985 military science fiction novel by American author Orson Scott Card is perhaps
one of the earliest examples of game based learning in fiction.
Without giving too much of the plot away, Ender is accepted in to the Battle School,
a military training school situated in Earth's orbit, where cadets participate in competitive
war simulations in zero gravity.
After perfecting various battle situations, Ender is finally told he is about to undergo
his final test, but there is a shocking surprise at the end of it.
Was it a game or was it reality?
Although this is clearly a fictional story, it does bring to question the use of games
for learning.
What better way to experience and plan for a dangerous situation than to practice in
a "made-up" setting.
If you haven't experienced the Ender's story, you can do so by reading the original novels,
the recent movie adaption, or audio play.
Although there had been some discussion about an associated game, nothing came out of it
in the end.
Number 9: Simulations.
The technological advancements of the 20th century led to many incredible developments,
of which simulations are just one.
These are imitations of a real-world process or system, and could be considered as an early
form of game-based learning in some circumstances.
The first simulation game is believed to have been a game created by Thomas T. Goldsmith
Jr. and Estle Ray Mann, which was a simple game that involved firing a missile at a target...though
this is not something the military used to practice firing missiles.
Nevertheless, military simulations, also known informally as "war games," do exists and are
used to test theories of warfare and to refine techniques without the need for actual hostilities,
however little is known about them.
But this isn't the only educational use for simulations.
Pilots practice and improve flying techniques, doctors' practice and refine techniques to
perform life-saving surgery, and astronauts practice dangerous space missions.
In many ways, using simulations for educational purposes have helped us with some of our greatest
achievements.
Number 8: Virtual Reality.
Before we get started on Virtual Reality, we'd love it if you took a moment in YOUR
reality to subscribe to our channel and like this video!
Don't forget to click that little notification bell, too, so you can always stay up to date
on new happenings with Zero2Hero!
The exact origins of virtual reality, or VR for short, are disputed, partly because of
how difficult it has been to formulate a definition for the concept of an alternative existence,
however VR, as we know it today, really started to develop in the 1990s, which saw the first
widespread commercial releases of consumer headsets.
From 2015 onwards, the world started to go VR mad with many of the big companies like
Google, Apple, Amazon, Microsoft, and many others, investing a lot of time, money and
people-power on VR development.
Although VR has many uses, the use of VR game-based learning has loads of potential, and there
are already some interesting games out there...like Cleanopolis, where the is to fight against
climate change and make sure the city of Cleanopolis get rid of its CO2 cloud, or Titans of Space
Carboard, which takes you on a short-guided tour of our planets and a few stars in virtual
reality.
With the developments in new, more improved VR kits and games designs, you can expect
to see many more VR educational games in the future.
Number 7: Game-Based Learning Skills.
Game-based learning gives people the opportunity to develop and improve a variety of skills.
Scrabble, hangman, crosswords, and other word-based games can help with vocabulary, pronunciation
and spelling.
Sudoku, and other number and math-based games, are excellent education tools for students
wanting to practice math.
Real-life games and video-games can give players the opportunity to improve team-working skills
by allowing them to role-play different roles, work to solve problems as a group, and to
bond with one-another...this last point is one reason why schools, and even some employers,
often use game-based team-building exercises.
Games are such effective ways to learn to new skills that they are used by most, if
not all, professions.
Whether its computer or video games, pen-based or board games, or virtual or real-life role-play
games, games are fundamental for learning.
However, it is important to remember that everyone has different styles of learning,
and what works for one person, might not work for the other.
Number 6: Problem Solving.
Problem solving skills are some of the most important skills in the 21st century education,
and its purpose is to provide people with the skills to overcome problems and difficulties
in their personal and professional lives.
Although there are plenty of problem-solving pen and board games, computers are changing
the way we practice and improve problem-solving skills, and the Internet has made these games
accessible to even more people.
Game developers are creating more and more games tailored to different age groups and
abilities, resulting in a large collection of solo and multi-player problem solving games.
With the introduction of apps, these games are now even more accessible, allowing users
to play at the touch of a button.
Games like The Room 3 and Does not Commute are two just two out of hundreds of app-based
games that can help improve problem-solving skills.
Number 5: Social Games.
In recent years, more and more multi-player games are being created, giving players the
opportunity to play with friends and strangers alike.
Though not all video games are created with educational purposes in mind, many multi-player
ones do provide the opportunity for players to interact with one another, to work in pairs
or groups, and to compete against one-another, resulting in an environment that can help
them develop cooperation skills and supporting skills as they attempt to form alliances and
create teams working cooperatively.
Gamers have the ability to connect with players locally or team up with people from countries
around the world.
Many people playing multiplayer games online, like World of Warcraft, have developed good
friendships with people they met.
Overall, although there are some negative results of online relationships, video games
have created a fun and engaging way of connecting with people and can act as an important teaching
tool in developing social skills.
Number 4: Learning About The Past.
Not all games, whether digital or not, are created for learning purposes, but that doesn't
mean they don't have learning-based features.
One game that encapsulates this is the "Assassin's Creed" series.
Many of its previous games are well known for their richly detailed historical environments,
and a lot of work goes in to creating these scenes.
In their most recent game "Assassin's Creed Origin" they have taken this one step further
by creating a museum-like experience set within the game's rendition of ancient Egypt.
The "Discovery Tour" element of the game was created with the help of Egyptologist who
crafted guided tours of many of the well-known sites in ancient Egypt.
And what better way to delve into history than through the enjoyment of a good game...something
that is more interesting to non-academics and academics alike.
The important point about history focused game-based learning is the vast amount of
research required to ensure the scenes portrayed are as historically accurate as possible...especially
if the game is meant to be realistic to its period.
With the possibility of further history-based games in the future, it opens a whole host
of opportunities for history researchers and graduates.
Number 3: Learning Languages.
When you consider the educational and social features of many games, it is perhaps not
surprising to find that combined they are extremely effective tools in helping people
to learn new languages.
Language learning games have been around for a long time, however, in the past they were
lacking the social interactive elements that we see in games today.
Whereas before you'd have to practice with someone face-to-face or over the telephone,
now you can practice with virtual avatars that speak to you, or you can speak to other
gamers using in-game chats or voice chats.
Some language games have narratives and story-lines, and whether you are playing on your own or
with others, these games provide useful role-play based learning experiences in a safe virtual
world.
In all, these collaborative game-based learning activities provide opportunities for learners
to apply what they've learned, and to get feedback through advice and support, or through
consequences and rewards.
So, next time you want to learn a language, go and check out what sort of language games
you can find, because these will be a useful tool in combination with either classroom-based
or virtual lessons.
Number 2: Nature Connecting Games.
It's an accepted fact that, today, most children in the developed world don't play outside
as much as children did a decade or so ago.
With advances in technology, decrease in prices and increases in accessibility, games have
changes the lives of millions of children and young adults.
As highlighted in this video, there are many benefits to game-based learning...whether
that's offline or online, however, there are also some negative results...especially when
children spend too much time gaming.
One of the effects of spending too much time playing games, whether there educational or
not, is that lack of connection with the outside world, and in particular with the natural
world.
It's hard for nature to compete with games like Fortnite or Call of Duty.
As a result, some people are now trying to find a way to engage children with the natural
world through games.
In England, The Gruffalo Spotters app, developed by the Forestry Commission England, offers
interactive forest trails that track down characters based on the best-selling children's
book The Gruffalo, by Julia Donaldson.
They have also created the ForestXplorer app which allows adults and children to become
tree-detectives, with the goal of being able to identify their ash trees from their alder
trees.
As far as game-based learning go, there is a lot of potential for nature-connecting games
and apps to be developed in the future.
Number 1: Does It work?
Does game-based learning really work?
Well, in short, YES!
Some people will often learn more from a game than from other forms of learning, and it
is a lot more fun to learn through games.
Although many would associate game-based learning with children or young adults, they are truly
beneficial to all ages.
As we've already seen, they can be used to teach new and interesting subjects, help people
learn new languages, or even allow people to delve into historical worlds and learn
about the past whilst enjoying a good game.
Whether you like gaming or not, it is hard to argue against the positive examples of
game-based learning, and although there will always be those it doesn't benefit, and there
are some issues that over-shadowing gaming, overall, we can see clear benefits from this
form of learning.
Moreover, the combination of game-based learning and digital games is a tech trend that fits
into the 21st century, and with over 2.2 billion gamers in the world, it definitely has a long
future ahead of it.
So, what do you think about game-based learning?
