Is Year Round Schooling Better for Students and Teachers? - Duration: 7:28.
- For many American students and their families,
summer is sacrosanct, a nice long break from school,
to recharge and refresh.
But students in about four percent of public schools
attend on a year round schedule.
Supporters of the idea say they can stop a loss of learning
and boost achievement, especially for low income students,
who need school meals over the break.
Special correspondent Lisa Stark,
of our partner, Education Week, visited one such school
in Holt, Michigan.
It's part of our weekly segment, Making the Grade.
- So everybody get a little bit of space here,
just so they can get the proper grip, okay?
- It's the start of summer break
in Holt, Michigan, and tennis camp is in full swing,
one of a number of summer activities on tap
for middle schooler Lucia Frost,
who was ready for school to end.
You're on summer vacation.
- Yes, it was great.
- Does it feel good?
- Yes, finally.
(laughing)
- [Lisa] But for her younger sister, Kako,
class is still in session.
- Okay, your turn.

- By seven.
- [Lisa] Kako's school, Sycamore Elementary,
is one of two in this district
that uses a so-called year round, or balanced calendar.
There are no additional school days,
still around the typical 180,
but those days are divided up differently.
In a year round calendar,
summer vacation is shorter,
about half of the usual 10 to 12 weeks,
and there are one to two week breaks sprinkled
throughout the year.
So what would you say to kids who don't know
about the balanced calendar?
- I would tell them that it feels like
you can get more breaks, but you still learn
as much as you need to be educated.
- [Lisa] Mom Kelly Frost is a fan.
- I think it's nice for the kids.
They don't get burnt out during the school year,
and in the summer,
I think that by having the shortened summer,
I think they're still getting their freedom outside.
- [Lisa] Some 3700 schools in the US,
around four percent of schools, use a balanced calendar.
In some cases, it's to manage overcrowding,
to stagger schedules, so one school
can handle more students,
but at many schools, such as Sycamore,
the hope is to boost student achievement
with more consistent education.
- So what do you do with that number?
- [Lisa] Third grade teacher, Denise Schaffer.
- I think that it gives us continuity,
and over time, we can spread our learning out a little bit
and take things a little bit more deliberately.
- [Lisa] Long summers, though,
are part of the American culture,
and can be a magical time for some families.
Any attempt to change the school schedule
often causes an uproar.
Here's Harvard's Jennifer Davis.
- The current school calendar is so ingrained
in the American society and family life
that it's very hard to change.
(children squealing)
- [Lisa] Davis, though, believes this school schedule
is way out of date.
- Today's American school calendar was created
for a 19th century farm and factory economy,
and it hasn't kept pace with the needs
of our changing economy and with the needs of families
in today's world.
- [Lisa] Kelly Frost agrees.
- I think that the shorter summers are better for education.
I think the longer summers, they're out too long.
- [Lisa] Long summer breaks can be a time of learning loss,
known as the Summer Slide,
- especially for low income students,
who may not have the money for camps, classes,
or summer activities to keep their minds active.
Every summer, low income students lose about two months
in reading skills, while middle income students
hold their own.
In math, most students, regardless of income,
lose some math skills.
Matthew Boulay heads
the National Summer Learning Association.
- The real problem with summer learning loss
is not simply what happens over one summer,
but it's the problem of loss
summer after summer after summer.
- [Child] Oh, use the black.
- [Lisa] Sycamore Elementary hopes to reduce that loss
with the balanced calendar.
It's the district's highest poverty school.
Over half the students qualify for free
or reduced price lunch.
- If we do school the way we've always done school,
we're gonna get the result we always have.
So by changing the calendar,
that's one thing that we can modify
to potentially make a difference.
- [Lisa] The district superintendent,
David Hornak, also heads up
the National Association for Year-Round Education.
He admits this schedule can be a tough sell.
Opponents argue teachers and students
lose out on summer jobs.
- But if you're a lefty, you'll be facing this way.
- [Lisa] For parents, it may be hard to find childcare
during school breaks.
Coaches worry about scheduling high school sports,
and for schools, summer air conditioning can be costly.
Hornak understands these concerns,
but insists a balanced calendar just makes sense.
- I think that that is something
we should take a longer look at.
We're spending millions and millions of dollars
nationwide, remediating the gaps
that the tradition calendar, in fact, creates.
- [Lisa] At Sycamore, internal measures show students here
are not losing ground during the summer break.
Principal Steve Garrison says,
"You can see the difference,
"when students return after the short summer vacation."
- We don't have a long six to eight weeks,
of trying to get kids caught up.
We start right off, second week, instruction starts,
after our routines are set.
- Despite the enthusiasm here for the year round schedule,
the data on its effectiveness are quite mixed.
It is not clear that a balanced calendar
really helps students retain more information,
or improves test scores.
A 2015 study found that year round students
do pull ahead during the summer,
but students on a traditional nine month calendar
catch up and pull ahead during the rest of the year.
Study author, Paul Von Hippel.
- Well, it's basically the same 175, 180 days
spread out differently across the year,
and since total instruction time doesn't increase,
total learning doesn't increase, either.
- [Lisa] Sycamore has tried to add learning time
to offering voluntary academics and activities
during school breaks,
but some researchers argue it's easier
to boost instruction time without tossing out
the traditional calendar,
by simply extending school hours, adding extra days,
and offering summer school.
- [Denise Schaffer] So let's count by sevens, ready?
- [Lisa] Still, at Sycamore, they're convinced.
The year round schedule is what is best
for students and teachers.
- I love having shorter breaks more frequently.
I really feel that it's better for my level of energy
and enthusiasm for teaching.
- [Lisa] Those regular breaks are a big hit
with Kako, too.
- I really wanna stay in the balanced calendar.
- [Lisa] Why?
- Because it just makes me, well, happy.
- [Lisa] So Kako's just fine waiting for her summer vacation
even as her sister is already off and running.

which is one of the 9 partners of Peripheral Access
He is going to explain us the activities of his team
In order to improve mobility in South Moravia region
I am the deputy director of Kordis JMK
which is the company which organises public transport in South Moravia and in Brno
Our aim is to improve public transport in our region
especially in the area around the city of Znojmo
which is about 70 km far from Brno
In the western part of Znojmo, there is a small village called Vranov
Around the city, there is a national park, bordering to Austria region
The national park is on the both sides of the border
There is also a dam which is quite popular among tourists
At the moment, there is quite good public transport on working days
and especially for local people
But the transportation for tourists is not very good

There was a battle of words on social media on Monday, July 30, between the statistician-general of the federation, Yemi Kale, and Reno Omokri, a writer and rather controversial legal practitioner.
The rift started when in 2017 Omokri reported that there was a massive job loss throughout the country.
In reply to Omokri's claim, Kale said that such news is false and unfounded, stating that there is no such decline going by the findings of the Nigerian Bureau of Statistics (NBS).
Omokri, in response, said that Kale went too far with his remarks, saying that being a public figure, the NBS boss should uphold decorum and civility is his statement.
However, Kale pointed out that Omokri is both trying to politicise the NBS and distracting people from the focus.

I'm glad you're taking the opportunity to borrow
one of our mallet instruments from the library.
This one here is a Glockenspiel.
Although some people may hear them as bells.
Other mallet instruments are xylophone, marimba, vibraphones
and we take care of them all in the same way.
First, you see by its structure that is like a keyboard,
just like a piano with wooden or metal keys.
Now some of these may have pipes on the bottom
or sit on a set of foot pads just like these ones,
here, to help amplify the sound.
When not in use, this instrument should always be covered
to avoid dust from getting on the keys
and to protect against damage.
Also it should not be thought of as a table,
meaning nothing should be placed on top of them
or lean against them.
Doing so could really ruin the instrument.
One last thing, make sure you always play
with the proper mallets.
On wooden keys only using plastic or rubber mallets
not brass.
On metal keys, plastic, rubber or brass mallets
are acceptable.

How to care for Keyboards - Duration: 1:35.

- Hi, this is Tanya here.
I'm so glad you've taken the opportunity to borrow
one of our portable keyboards from the library,
but I just want to share some tips
on how you can take care of it before you start.
If the keyboard didn't come with a cover,
make sure you put a light cloth over it
when it's not in use because this will prevent
any dust layers from forming on its surface.
Typically your keyboard will be pretty clean,
but if you need to wipe it down,
use a soft cloth not a paper towel.
Slightly dampen it with a mild mixture
of one to two drops of dishwashing soap and warm water.
Don't use any cleaning chemicals or solutions.
Wipe each key individually towards you starting
with the white keys and then the black ones,
then use a second clean cloth to wipe them dry.
One of the biggest and most common mistakes
people make with keyboards is spilling things
all over them.
So make sure you don't leave your drinks or your food
where it could accidentally spill onto the keys
and damage the electronics.
And needless to say, make sure your hands are clean
before you play.
Lastly, avoid exposing the keyboard
to extreme temperatures and if the keyboard is
on a keyboard stand, make sure it's properly assembled.
