What the heck is ikat? - Duration: 0:57.

Ikat is a very traditional technique.

On this scarf, the warp that goes down is a cream colour.

Alright?

That doesn't change.

The weft that goes across is three or four colours of lilac and purple.

Each single thread that goes across has to be tie dyed before it goes on the loom.

Alright?

So the weaver, or somebody who prepares the thread, will take the thread and dye it a

little bit purple, leave a bit white, a little bit pink, a little bit white.

It's quite an amazing technique.

They bind each yarn with other yarns so it doesn't take up the purple.

So where you see white, all of those threads have been bound with other yarn.

Think of the time that that would take.

So all those threads are pre tie dyed and they go on a rack in a special order.

The weaver takes the threads in that order and puts them on the loom and then they will

form that pattern gradually.

That's ikat.
