Manchester United will reject any bids for Chris Smalling
MANCHESTER UNITED will reject any late bids for Chris Smalling as the transfer deadline fast approaches with both West Brom and Leicester poised to bid. Smalling has been stuck on the bench for each of United's opening three Premier League fixtures.
Chris Smalling will not be leaving Man United.
The England defender is staying put. He has watched on as Phil Jones and Eric Bailly have struck up a centre-back partnership which has helped the Red Devils to three clean sheets.
Jose Mourinho said after the 2-0 defeat of Leicester City last Saturday what an asset Jones would be going forward if he could just stay fit.
But while they are the current first choice, Mourinho is determined to keep strength in depth in his squad now they are back in the Champions League.
Smalling will certainly get his chance in the opening Champions League group game against Basel on September 12 with both Bailly and Jones banned.
Bailly is serving the last of a three game European ban following his sending off in the Europa League semi-final second leg. He was already excluded from the final of that competition and the Super Cup game against Real Madrid.
Phil Jones and Eric Bailly have formed an effective partnership at the back.
Jose Mourinho will not allow one of his back line to be flogged.
Jones also missed the Real game and will serve his final game of a two match ban against Basel after abusing an ant-doping official following United's Europa League final win.

The Pittsburgh Steelers added an athletic tight end to their roster.
The Steelers acquired tight end Vance McDonald and a 2018 fifth-round draft pick from the
San Francisco 49ers in exchange for a 2018 fourth-rounder, both teams announced Tuesday.
Speaking with reporters, Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said the move to acquire McDonald was,
in part, motivated by the team's current crop of tight ends not being "not consistently
varsity enough."
"We're going to put him in uniform like the rest of them and continue to allow them to
sort themselves out," Tomlin said about the team's tight ends.
"It's reasonable to expect the guys that are here to respond positively in the right way
to his presence and elevate their play."
In four years with the 49ers, McDonald has started 30 games, snagging 64 receptions for
866 yards and seven touchdowns.
The former second-round pick signed a five-year $35 million contract extension with San Francisco
in December.
The new regime has attempted to trade the 27-year-old this offseason.
They finally found a taker.
The 49ers will move forward with rookie George Kittle -- who has impressed coaches this offseason
-- Logan Paulson, Garrett Celek, and Blake Bell at tight end.
An already potent Pittsburgh offense just upgraded a position of need ahead of the season
opener, moving down a single round in the draft to add a potential playmaking weapon
to their tight-end room.
McDonald should push Jesse James for playing time as soon as he gets up to speed.

Tottenham have made an extraordinary attempt to gazump Chelsea and poach striker Fernando Llorente from under the noses of the Premier League Champions.
Tottenham registered their interest on Wednesday evening and then made a shock bid on the morning of Deadline Day as Chelsea manager Antonio Conte faces missing out on yet another summer target.
Tottenhams bid was accepted by Swansea this morning and the offer is understood to be higher than Chelsea have previously been willing to go for the striker.
Llorente, however, still has a strong relationship with Antonio Conte. Conte managed Llorente at Juventus and the 32-year-old is also close to new forward Alvaro Morata. The Italian wanted him in January but the club didnt follow through with the deal.
In the mixed zone at Stamford Bridge at the end of February, Conte and Llorente embraced and were in deep discussions after the Spaniard scored for Swansea in a 3-1 Chelsea win.
Llorente will hold talks with his brother, who is his agent, this morning and the pair will give Chelsea a few hours to make a counter-offer.
Sources close to the player do not believe Chelseas chances are over but Tottenham are now ahead in the race. Yet Tottenham have come in late and are optimistic of doing a deal and want Llorente to provide backup for Harry Kane.
Conte, who has already seen moves for Romelu Lukaku, Danilo, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain hijacked this summer by Premier League rivals, will be furious if the Chelsea board fail to sign Llorente.
He said on Friday it would be impossible to challenge in four competitions with 11 to 13 players, in a clear message to the hierarchy that recruitments are needed.
Reports in Spain suggest Spurs have offered more money to the striker in order to tempt him to make the switch to White Hart Lane.
Chelsea risk a repeat of the situation which occurred with Romelu Lukaku earlier in the summer, in missing out on a striker who they believed was on the verge of sealing a move and had eyes only for them.
Conte has already expressed his dissatisfaction several times during the window, and is set to be furious if the club now lose out on Llorente.
The potential arrival of the Spaniard at White Hart Lane could see striker Vincent Janssen make a deadline day departure from the club.

Can myeloma cells contaminate a patient's stem cells that are harvested for transplant? - Duration: 2:45.
This week's ask Dr. Durie comes from a patient who's concerned about the
possibility of contamination in cells that have been harvested for stem cell
transplantation and so the question is can there be myeloma cells in the
harvested cells from the from the blood and so the answer to this question is is
yes there can sometimes be myeloma cells in the blood and those can be
contaminating the harvested stem cells but there are several important points
to that if you have had an excellent response prior to the stem cell harvest
which is the case for the vast majority of patients then the number of myeloma
stem cells in the blood is very very low and so the risk is in general quite low
that there would be some level of contamination but there are some
additional very important points the first is that when stem cells are
present when myeloma stem cells are present they undergo the freezing and
thawing process the same as the normal bone marrow stem cells and they are more
fragile and actually end up being damaged if not completely eliminated by
that freezing and thawing process the second thing is that even if there are a
few myeloma stem cells present there are no data to indicate that they would ever
actually cause relapse in the patient when this was studied actually 10 to 15
years ago when there was more of a concern about this it was discovered
that when a myeloma patient relapses it's always from cells which have
remained in the body of the patient and it was never due to any small number of
myeloma stem cells that are re-infused from the harvested material and so the
bottom line is yes there can be myeloma cells in the harvest stem
cells but they are very unlikely to cause any trouble and actually have
never ever been shown to cause relapse in the patient so a concern yes but
actually a problem for the patient fortunately no
