- In the same of the Father and of the Son
and of the Holy Spirit. - Amen.
- The Lord be with you. - And with your spirit.
- Today we celebrate the feast of the
transfiguration of our Lord.
In the gospel Peter, James, and John
see the glory of God in the transfigured Jesus.
As we prepare to celebrate this liturgy,
let us reflect on the times
we have not opened ourselves to Jesus' presence
and seen his risen glory.
- Lord Jesus you were transfigured before
Peter, James, and John Lord have mercy.
- [Congregation] Lord, have mercy.
- Christ Jesus you are the glory of God revealed to us.
Christ, have mercy.
- [Congregation] Christ, have mercy.
- Lord Jesus your Heavenly Father
commands us to listen to you.
Lord, have mercy.
- [Congregation] Lord, have mercy.
- May almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us our sins,
and bring us to life everlasting.
Glory to God in the highest
- [Congregation] And on Earth peace to people of good will.
We praise you, we bless you,
we adore you, we glorify you,
we give you thanks for your great glory.
Lord God Heavenly King
O God Almighty Father
Lord Jesus Christ only begotten Son
Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father
you take away the sins of the world have mercy on us.
You take away the sins of the world receive our prayer.
You are seated at the right hand of the Father
have mercy on us.
For you alone are the holy one.
You alone are the Lord.
You alone are the most high Jesus Christ
with the Holy Spirit in the glory of God the Father amen.
- Let us pray.
O God, who with the glorious transfiguration
of your only begotten Son confirmed the mysteries of faith
by the witness of the fathers
and wonderfully prefigured our full adoption to sonship
grant we pray to your servants
that listening to the voice of your beloved Son
we may merit to become coheirs with him
who lives and reigns with you
in the unity of the Holy Spirit
one God forever and ever amen.
- A reading from the book of the Prophet Daniel:
As I watched thrones were set up
and the ancient one took his throne.
His clothing was snow bright
and the hair on his head as white as wool.
His throne was flames of fire with wheels of burning fire.
A surging stream of fire flowed out from where he sat.
Thousands upon thousands were ministering to him
and myriads upon myriads attended him.
The court was convened and the books were opened.
As the visions during the night continued I saw
one like a Son of Man coming on the clouds of Heaven.
When he reached the ancient one
and was presented before him
the one like a Son of Man received
dominion, glory, and kingship
all peoples, nations, and languages serve him.
His dominion is an everlasting dominion
that shall not be taken away.
His kingship shall not be destroyed.
The word of the Lord.

Beloved, we did not follow cleverly devised myths
when we made known to you the power
and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
But we had been eye witnesses of his majesty.
For he received honor and glory from God the Father
when that unique declaration came to him
from the majestic glory.
This is my Son my beloved with whom I am well pleased.
We ourselves heard this voice come from Heaven
while we were with him on the holy mountain.
Moreover we possess the prophetic message
that is all together reliable.
You will do well to be attentive to it

- The Lord be with you.
- And with you spirit. - A reading from the
holy gospel according to Matthew.
- [Congregation] Glory to you, Lord.
- Jesus took Peter, James, and his brother John
and led them up a high mountain by themselves.
He was transfigured before them.
His face shone like the sun,
and his clothes became white as light.
Behold Moses and Elijah appeared to them
conversing with him.
Then Peter said to Jesus in reply,
"Lord it is good that we are here.
"If you wish I will make three tents here
"one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah."
While he was still speaking behold
a bright cloud cast a shadow over them.
Then from the cloud came a voice that said,
"This is my beloved Son
"with whom I am well pleased.
"Listen to him."
When the disciples heard this,
they fell prostrate and were very much afraid.
But Jesus came and touched them saying,
"Rise and do not be afraid."
When the disciples raised their eyes,
they saw no one else but Jesus alone.
As they were coming down from the mountain
Jesus charged them,
"Do not tell this vision to anyone
"until the Son of Man has been raised from the dead."
The gospel of the Lord.
- [Congregation] Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ.
- When I was a kid and we would go to the movies
at times there would be something
that would be called a sneak preview.
It was kind of a privileged thing
'cause you would see the movie
before it was released to everybody else.
You felt kind of privileged
because you got a sneak preview
of what was to come for everybody else.
In essence today this transfiguration
that we celebrate is kind of like Jesus sneak preview
to his disciples to help them with the time
would come when he was going to suffer and die
that hopefully they would remember this is experience
and it would give them courage to continue on.
So this transfiguration which is now the
fourth luminous mystery of the rosary
is there to help us remember
that Jesus is there to encourage us
especially when times are tough for us as well.
But let's look at these disciples Peter, James, and John.
Jesus chose just the three of them not the whole group
just the three of them to go up there
and to have this experience.
These are the same disciples
after this wonderful experience
of seeing Jesus transfigured
these are the same disciple
who fell asleep at the Garden of Gethsemane.
Jesus said couldn't you even stay awake with me an hour.
You know twice they fell asleep at the Garden of Gethsemane
after having this transfiguration experience.
Peter at the passion of Christ even denied knowing Jesus
after he had this religious experience.
Then all the other disciples
who were locked up in that upper room
and Peter, James, and John were with them.
They were locked up in fear
even after Peter, James, and John
had this mountain top experience.
You see a religious experience is a great gift from God
not granted to everybody but to some.
But a religious experience doesn't mean
it's the be all and end all.
The religious experience has to continually be nurtured.
For us the best experience that we have
the most religious experience we have
is what we celebrate when we come to mass.
This holy Eucharist in a sense
you know the bread and the wine
are transfigured before our very eyes.
We don't see a physical transformation,
but we know that the bread and wine
that we bring to the altar
and what we receive are two different things.
We receive Christ present to us.
We need that presence.
As Jesus shared that experience with his disciples
you know even though they weren't worthy of that.
We think of how they faltered
after that wonderful religious experience.
Jesus still came in their midst.
Jesus comes in our midst
and wants to share himself with us
worthy or not as we are
because we know that the Eucharist
is not a reward just for the good
but it's the nourishment for us to go on
to continue to strive to be good.
So Jesus shared his very self with his disciples
after the resurrection even in spite
of them turning their backs on him.
Even in spite of them doubting
he still came into their midst
so that they could experience him again.
Then through the power of the sending of the Holy Spirit
he gave them the courage to go out to spread the good news,
and you and I are here because of that.
So may we continue then to strive
to be good disciples of the Lord
to strive to let him live through us
to make sure that we're nurtured by this Eucharist
and when not able to be at the mass for Eucharist
like those who watch on our their television as they come
and they're united with us in the spirit of Christ
for the Spirit is not bound by rooms or by churches
but the Spirit goes throughout.
Even though who watch us on the television
they too encounter the resurrected Christ.
May that encounter inspire us then to continue
to be his faithful servants to go out
and to spread the good news simply by loving
simply by trusting in the one who loves us so much.
Together we profess our faith using the Apostle's Creed.
