'Karate Kid' TV Sequel: 'Cobra Kai' Enlists Original Cast for 2018 Series - Duration: 1:55.

In further proof that Hollywood's insatiable appetite for nostalgia-friendly reboot frenzy

shows no sign of slowing, 1984's classic The Karate Kid will be returning as a ten episode

half-hour comedy on YouTube Red.

The Ralph Machio and Pat Morita franchise spawned three sequels with the original cast,

a 1994 sidequel starring Hillary Swank and a Jaden Smith and Jackie Chan led-2010 reboot.

Original actors Ralph Macchio ​and William Zabka will be reprising their roles of Daniel

LaRusso and Johnny Lawrence for the comedy reboot.

Noriyuki "Pat" Morita who played the iconic Mr. Miyagi passed away due to kidney failure

in 2005 at the age of 73.

The comedy will be titled Cobra Kai and will follow the story of Johnny, who reopens the

Cobra Kai dojo, and Daniel, who, now successful, is attempting to navigate the ups and downs

of life without help from mentor Mr. Miyagi.

The opening of the dojo rekindles the rivalry between the two characters.

Cobra Kai​ will be set 30 years after the 1984 All Valley Karate Tournament.

Naturally, the series will have to be updated to reflect 2017 and Johnny is now an alt-right

MAGA Trump Supporter and this is how Daniel delivers the crane kick nowadays

Josh Heald of Hot Tub Time Machine, alongside Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg of Harold

and Kumar, will be handling script writing duties and will act as executive producers.

Macchio and Zabka are also set to co-executively produce the show.

A joint statement from Heald, Hurwitz, and Schlossberg reads:

"Cobra Kai​ will be a true continuation of the original films—packed with comedy,

heart and thrilling fight scenes.

We can't wait to reignite the LaRusso-Lawrence rivalry, and we're thankful to our partners

at YouTube Red, Sony Pictures Television and Overbrook for their shared enthusiasm in making

our dream project a reality."

The show was reportedly bid on by multiple studios including Netflix, Amazon, Hulu, and

AMC.

It is set to premiere sometime in 2018.
