Waching daily May 22 2018

Hey awesome ones, Bill and I are kind of pretending that we're going

to a potluck dinner. I love potluck dinners and in this pot-luck

kind of, not THAT kind... you know what I mean but anyway what you know, whatever

happened to potluck dinners? I don't know I'm getting hungry just thinking about it.

That's for sure, well you know what, we do put on potluck dinners and we can invite

like 50 people to come over to our home and they're all over the place. That's a lot

of potato salad and we want to talk about this because it's a great way to get

people together and I'm gonna tell you about it and also if you don't have a

dish we will tell you something to bring as well so let's get into it...

So Bill you remember in our younger days we used to see, like your

friends were the most important thing you know, you had to see your friends and

every weekend you had to see your friends and then kind of jobs and family...

yeah kids and all that sort of thing, I don't know, it just kind of got it all

muddled up but you know what Bill? It's time to see our friends again

and we've been fortunate because I've kept in touch with, well a

girlfriend that I've known since I was six years old and another one well more than one

in my teenage years and Bill how many friends have you kept in touch. I

don't have any friends my only friend is a buck the more bucks I have more friends I

have...that's Fred Flintstone he's quoting there, but anyway no, but I

mean, you must have about a dozen friends from grade school and high school...and me

this was the best way to keep people together throughout the decades

this the potluck, yeah and the thing is that we'll have these potluck dinners

and well dinners I mean they they start about one o'clock and they go until one

o'clock in the morning but what we usually do is we we say to somebody "hey

we're having a potluck dinner and just bring whatever you want to bring" and

some of the guys, some of your single guys are like, huh? I get the feeling over

the phone or you do, to that they might not even show up so I just say "hey you

know bring a bag of chips" it doesn't really matter but yeah nobody's brought

ever bought a bag of chips... box of doughnuts! Well the funniest thing I

was invited to a potluck dinner and this guy walks in and you know, usually you

see, you know the single guys ..hey... some single guys are great cooks like don't

know, I know but some of these guys are just they don't know what to bring so

they bring a bucket of chicken great, that's wonderful, but I remember this one

guy I was at a potluck and he he dumped 20 cheeseburgers from a fast food place

He just dumped them and they all went in

no time so you know going to a potluck dinner and hey, I don't know, I remember

when I first mentioned to you let's have a potluck dinner you you kind of felt

awkward. I felt awkward because I thought nobody's gonna want, especially the guys,

nobody's gonna want to have to make anything. Yeah it almost seems like in

this day and age now they've mentioned, mentioned it earlier people just want to

come and oh it's catered, oh you've provided all the food. Yeah but that's

what you thought. That's what I thought, yes what he thought, he thought... oh my

no Heather we have to cater or no, no, no let's just take people out for dinner

and and I'm thinking to myself well how can you we've got about 30 to 40 people that

we want to see this summer how are we gonna do that and you know monetarily it

just doesn't make sense too and and we're not trying to be something we're not

either, you know, we don't need to do that so it's just amazing you put on these

potluck dinners and pretty well everybody shows up... yeah it's just wonderful. So

what do you do if you're the person putting on the potluck dinner. Well you

clean for two days. Hey we downsized, we have a really small place here compared

to what we used to have but I'm going to show you some pictures here first of all

I lay out a table where everybody can kind of drop the food there's usually

even more than one location for that also I've got a cool little tiki bar

that I make up and I've got the blender there and I can make Oh pina coladas for

everybody. I'm making strawberry daiquiris and all that sort of thing in...

back to us again... you know, yes as the host and hostess you've got to make sure

that hey you've got some liquor and I usually make a lasagna and Caesar salad

some basics yeah so you know if nobody brings a dish

then were covered with that. ICE we always run out of ice that's a big, you

know, if somebody says I don't know what to bring have them bring ice for sure

You're going to need it, everybody seems to want a pina colada and a strawberry

daiquiri, also have some items on hand for the designated drivers, you know, you

can make them virgin drinks but also some pop and lots of water and a lot of

people bring dessert so my coffee guy he's usually making lots of French press

coffee in various containers but the one thing I love is that it seems

that people bring their signature dish don't you find that? I have found that

that's really true yeah, that's true and if they have maybe a peanut allergy or

they need some gluten free dish you don't need to worry about that, they've

got it all covered and oh you know we shouldn't have done this before like,

before we were eating dinner because it's so mouth-watering, thinking about

oh, oh like a lot of people are bringing their signature dishes from their

countries of origin. It's a good point, and yes some are spicy but it's

just so delicious the smorgasbord of food it's just so much that's what I

love is just finding these. I said I mentioned these dishes that maybe aren't

local to your area and they're just wow this is amazing! And when I'm

invited to a potluck dinner generally what I do is I either hand make the

meatballs and cook them up and make a kind of a sweet-and-sour type of, what do

you call those things, those meatballs or goodness sweet sour meatballs and

there's recipes online that you can find. Sometimes if I'm too much of a hurry hey

you can get the Swedish meatballs frozen cook them up and then you can even in

some cases I know, I buy this the sweet sour sauce strictly for those meatballs

and I throw it all in a crock pot, show up at the the party with a bottle of

wine with and we're ready to go but I did promise

to you that I'm going to show you a little recipe that anybody can make this

recipe... So here I am in the kitchen and I'm wearing this really wonderful little

apron and if you saw the it's the one-of-a-kind show I'll put it up there

somewhere where they were selling these aprons and all kinds of neat things but

anyway back to the video... I almost forgot to tell you that for the beer and the

coolers we put them in big buckets and I mean you're not going to, if you're going

to put on a potluck dinner you're going to be mingling and having fun you're not

going to be sitting there asking "would you like a drink, what can

I make you" No, no, you know we're just going to do that and I also

have tomato juice and celery and all that sort of thing if they want to make

themselves a Caesar or a Bloody Mary or something but I've got these pots and

all kinds of things all over the place we even have and I'll show you

the picture here a smoking section in our backyard for the people who want to

smoke we've even got that covered there so at our potluck they're in the kitchen,

they're out in the living room they're on the deck, everywhere, just mingle meet our

wonderful friends and it's lots of fun but I promised you a recipe didn't I ? So

let's do this... gotta be like one of the most simplest recipes in the world

I usually I've got a couple here. I've got a couple of different kinds of

salsas and this is just a nachos and salsa kind of thing but it goes over

very, very well and I've never been to a party yet where I've made it and it

hasn't been empty on the way home so basically I've just got a nice clean

plate here and I just sort of

dump the salsa in there, now if you want to get fancy yes there's some lovely

kind of homemade ones or whatever you can get at stores as well but I just do

the medium salsa and dump that in there and then what I do is I get some sour

cream and like I said medium or mild you don't

want it too hot for people and I just sort of just drop this on here and

maybe Bill you can get a little ,,a little close-up of that

though you don't want to have it all in one place because it's just gonna sink

right down to the bottom and I'm using a glass dish here you could use an

aluminum one or go to the dollar store and make maybe get something

there. Now for this I'm not going to add any guacamole once again you can get

oops, you can get the guacamole from the from

the store... sorry about that noise there... but so that works now also what I did

was I just you know just grated some cheese, this is an old cheese so it's got

a little bit of tartness to it so and again I'm just just kind of dropping

that on there and as I mentioned before or maybe you'll mention it later you can

also buy the grated cheese already grated I mean how wonderful is that!

So let's just get this on here. I might not have made enough cheese for this but

usually what I would do is I would cover every little inch of it so that it's all

cheesy so I apologize it might not happen with this go around but you know

don't sweat it because people are just happy that you brought something,

it's okay there we go... all right and so also I've just chopped

up just a green onion and then my hands are clean here so I'm just going to

sprinkle that on top there as well.

I'd like to make this the day before that way it that way it kind of settles

in the fridge and it gets really nicely put together and I'm done I just have to

cover that with some aluminum foil. I've got a little scoop, some nachos that they

have out right now so a lot of times these are multigrain

I'll get the scoop if I want to be really fancy I'll get maybe you know the

ones that are like the restaurant style and they have purple and red and you

know if I want to be fancy I'll do something along those lines and it's all

just a good idea to go to the dollar store too and maybe get a little bit of

a big bowl so that you can put those out as well, so sometimes I don't even have

time to even come home maybe Bill and I are somewhere and it's just too busy and

the choice is do we miss the party or do we just kind of get 'er done and so what

we do is we go to the grocery store and we buy everything you know, we buy the

onion, we buy this sour cream, we get maybe one of those aluminum tins, you

know, to make it all in and the salsa we're not oh and that cheese you

can get that grated in a bag as well so just bring it all to the party say

"hey we're here, we're a little bit late but give me five minutes and I'm gonna

make up my dish" and away you go it's done and you're having fun at the party

So there you go, there you have it ,it's easy-peasy, another thing I want to

mention to you is take a cab, you know if you're going to one of these

get-together so you're going to be there from one o'clock until one o'clock a.m. it's

a good idea to take a cab or have a designated driver, please do that please

say stay safe ,we just love you here as our subscribers and also kind of just

as a courtesy don't forget to bring what you're drinking and talking about

not forgetting something hmm we forgotten...

Our little Hurricane. Hey Hurricane, yeah and one thing about little Hurricane when we

have get-togethers he gets terrified, I mean he's so tiny he's so small and

there's so many people in a confined area that he just has to go to a spot

where he feels protected or he comes to us myself or Heather. Well we'll pick him

up so that he's he's safe... let me just say something here... we always invite our

adult children because we can say "hey can you just hold on to Hurricane for a

little while and you know that way we can go ahead and enjoy and mingle with

our friends and they kind of are onto it anyway. They, everybody loves

Hurricane - so yeah and you know what we also want to make sure that all of you

could take a cue from this because you don't want to lose your dog at a front

door or a cat or anything like that and we don't want to put him in a kennel he

doesn't like kennels or cages. Yeah, yeah we don't want to do that so well and hey if

you have a signature dish that you want to share with just put it in the comments

under here, yeah, and tell us what your signature dish would be that you

would take to a potluck dinner and you know we we usually, we

usually talk about how most days are, well many days are just made for playing

and we actually do plan our fun and we we put it in seasons I'm going to

actually put that video up there because planning for fun is such a great

thing to do and you know time, time it's not on our side and we only have so

many summers and you know, remember your precious friends and this is a great way

to do something. I am so relaxed at these parties. Yes she's very relaxed. I mean

when I put on another kind of party I'm just like huh even the

Thanksgiving dinners for like 11 or my own family I'm just like a little busy

bee all over the place and at these get togethers I really relax oh they're just a

wonderful thing to do. Sorry Heather it's a great social, it

really, for the hosts, for the guests, everybody, yeah absolutely, so keep it

stress-free folks and... what about we do we do some videos on Tuesday... oh right

right you almost forgot! I almost forgot so on Tuesday afternoons we do these

kind of lifestyle ones right, going to do food we're talking to chefs now and

travel etc and on Fridays you know I was a former model so I'm doing some beauty

and fashion and all that sort of thing and you're even then I do some more fashion ...

sure yeah... Why not, you know what we're having a

ball with this isn't it great and lots of fun so if you want to come down and

Real Reason For The Obama's Multi Year 'Project' With Netflix Is Far Worse Than Anyone Thought - Duration: 5:34.

Real Reason For The Obama's Multi-Year 'Project' With Netflix Is Far Worse Than Anyone Thought

Netflix just announced on Twitter that they inked a multi-year deal to produce series

and films with Barack and Michelle Obama.

The shows will be part of the Netflix streaming series and the former President, and the first

lady will be portrayed in a heaping of various ways.

This could be seen as just another job for the Obama family in their search to remain

relevant in politics, and culture.

Or there might be another agenda hidden in their Democratic silver lining, which would

make their desire to work much worse than anyone thought.

Some critics believe the Obama family signed onto this deal in hopes to use Netflix, to

sneak their Democrat agenda into the mainstream streaming services, and try to push for the

Democrat candidate in the 2020 election.

We're not that far away from the next election and the Obama's have signed a multi-year

deal.

That could take them right up to the election and it's likely, that they'll use the

platform to push people to vote for whomever the Democrat candidate is.

That idea has some critics of the Obama family who subscribe to Netflix expressed they were

disappointed, or upset that Netflix signed with them.

The reaction proves once again that politics mixing with entertainment is a complete disaster.

Some critics have expressed their disinterest in any programming involving the Obama's,

and stated that they simply won't watch it.

Others expressed that they'll just give it a poor rating and move on.

Some Netflix users have already canceled and moved to other streaming services.

CBS provided details on the Netflix and Obama partnership (which might spell doom for Netflix):

"Former President Barack Obama and former first lady Michelle Obama have signed a multi-year

agreement to produce films and series for Netflix, the streaming service announced Monday

in a tweet.

The deal potentially includes scripted series, unscripted series, docu-series, documentaries

and features.

Netflix said in a statement that the content will be available to its 125 million members

in 190 countries.

The Obamas have started Higher Ground Productions to produce their content for Netflix.

In a statement shared by Netflix, Obama said he and Michelle Obama "hope to cultivate

and curate the talented, inspiring, creative voices who are able to promote greater empathy

and understanding between peoples, and help them share their stories with the entire world."

In her statement, Michelle Obama said, "Netflix's unparalleled service is a natural fit for

the kinds of stories we want to share, and we look forward to starting this exciting

new partnership."

According to the New York Times, which first reported that the former president was in

negotiations with Netflix, Obama does not plan to use the shows to respond directly

to President Trump or to any of his political critics.

Obama senior adviser Eric Schultz told CBS News in March that the Obamas "have lifted

up stories of people whose efforts to make a difference are quietly changing the world

for the better," and as they considered their future plans, they would "explore

new ways help others tell and share their stories."

The Times also said of the negotiations in March that the deal could result in "a series

of high-profile shows that will provide him a global platform after his departure from

the White House."

Some believe that Netflix knew there might be a reaction from their users when they signed

the Obama's.

If people are reacting by canceling their subscription with Netflix, then Netflix might

be losing some of their income.

However, one could speculate that Netflix saw this reaction coming years ago when they

raised prices on certain tiers of their services.

The prices went up anywhere from $1 to $2 per month, not a huge increase per household,

but a nice increase for Netflix based on how many subscribers they have.

For example, one plan went from $11.99 to $13.99 – still cheap and much better than

a lot of cable programming, but one can ponder if Netflix saw their users being upset when

they signed with a political figure.

However, their pricing increase is most likely due to them offering more shows at high quality.

If Netflix were to keep their rates as they were, then some shows may not have been possible

– like the Obama show!

People need to remember that it cost money to produce shows at high quality and that

any subscription under $15 is still a good deal.

The other aspect of the Obama and Netflix deal is that the Obama's were once connected

to Harvey Weinstein.

People in the film industry, mostly the liberal celebrities, have always loved the Obama family.

However, the connections with the grimy alleged predator who looks like the second coming

of Shrek (Harvey Weinstein) have some people concerned.

In fact, Barack and Michelle's daughter Malia even had an internship with Harvey and

it's rumored that he might still owe her money.

TMZ provided this info: "Rumors began to swirl in March that 44 and the former First

Lady were in talks with Netflix, but the terms of the deal were still unclear.

The Obamas have always been champions of the film industry and at once had close ties with

Harvey Weinstein before all his sexual assault allegations surfaced.

Their daughter, Malia, even had an internship at the Weinstein Company."

Fall For – Phrasal Verb Definitions - Duration: 1:37.

Hi there!

My name is Mrs. P. Welcome to my class!

In today's video, I'm talking about the definitions for the phrasal verb "fall for".

There are only two different definitions for this phrasal verb,

and they are easy to distinguish, because the first one is followed by a "thing",

and the second is followed by a person.

The first definition, fall for (something), means to be deceived by something.

For example: "I told him I would think about it and tell

him later, but he didn't fall for that old trick."

"She fell for his lies, and quickly regretted believing him."

The second definition, fall for (someone), means to fall in love with someone.

And this is informal.

"He was very good-looking, and I fell for him right away."

"Katie has fallen for her best friend's brother, Charlie."

OK!

So, those are the definitions for the phrasal verb "fall for".

If you want to practice this with me, then leave an example sentence down below

in the comments section, and I will correct it for you.

Angel Message For The Week #18 - Duration: 3:55.

Angel Message For The Week #18

by Elise Cantrell

Stop searching for the key.

You cant unlock the door, until you find the doorway.

No door is locked.

You do not need the key, you just need the door.

All doors exist inside of you.

Outer doors are illusions.

To find the door, look within.

When you are stopped in your tracks on a beautiful path, and met by your worst fears, know it

is because you are being led to a higher path with a richer destination.

The fears are illusions.

They are just there to help you detach from the path youre on, so that you will stretch

yourself up to a higher path.

You are torn apart, to build something greater.

Your life is rearranged so that the ego is no longer your master, and no longer in charge.

No matter how deeply you have been plunged into the darkness, all of your true light

remains.

When the ego is plunged into the dark, the soul will find its way back to the light,

and thus the soul becomes Master and the ego takes its rightful place.

The soul allows you to go far beyond the path of the ego onto the higher path.

Fear arises from the ego in order to fight and prevent its own fall.

But, as you face those fears, you become ready to allow the defeat of the ego in order for

the soul to arise.

This is ascension.

This is resurrection.

The higher path awaits you.

The soul allows you to go far beyond the destruction of the ego.

Your angels and guides are with you, leading you there, listen to their messages, and take

all of the help you are being offered from the Earthly and spiritual realm.

Devastation is the precursor to resurrection.

Out of devastation new life arises.

Be open to new paths of light, new paths of love, new paths of destiny.

Once you arise you are no longer afraid of falling.

For the soul has taken charge and knows in truth.

There is nothing to fear.

The soul is courage, strength and wisdom.

Once you have been down to the bottom, you will see that all paths leads upwards.

The darkness is only there to move you towards the light.

The discomfort there in the darkness is what causes you to seek the light.

As you move out of the darkness, you bring others with you.

You are moving others to the light who have been waiting in the dark with you and for

you.

You choose this path to bring as many others as possible, because you trusted the power

of your own light so intently.

You are the light of God.

You love so intently, that your soul didnt want any other soul to stay in the dark.

This is the great push, where you descended into the darkness in order to help other souls

find the way to the light.

This is the action and energy of Christ Consciousness working within you.

You are acting from a place of vast compassion, forgiveness and love.

By opening the doorway of unconditional love within you, you find the way home.

When you arrive, you will remember that you are a conduit of love that can bring massive

amounts of pure love to any person, location or situation that exists.

That is your true power, one that is limitless and eternal.

It is in reach, just beyond the ego.

Your destruction was not a trap, it was a gift.

How to Request a Prior Approval for Carryover of Unobligated Balances - Duration: 5:09.

[Department of Health & Human Services, USA; HRSA, Health Resources & Services Administration]

Welcome to the tutorial on how to request a Prior Approval for a carryover of unobligated

balances.

Let's get started!

Once an organization has been awarded a grant, HRSA Staff will then determine the length

of time your organization is given for the awarded HRSA federal funding.

In this example, the grantee has been given a 3-year project period.

Starting in 2017 and ending in 2020.

The Grantees 3-year project period is broken down into 3 budget periods.

Where the grantee will receive HRSA federal funding for each budget period as long as

they're compliant and complete the required grant submissions.

In this example, an employee of the awarded organization is working on the 2017 Federal Financial Report.

Upon completion of the FFR, the grantee has determined that there is an unobligated balance of federal funds from 2017.

In this situation the grantee must consult with his Grants Management Specialist (GMS)

to determine the next steps.

The GMS has recommended that the grantee create a Prior Approval Request to carry over the

unobligated funds from the 2017 Budget period to the 2018 Budget Period.

Now that we have taken the appropriate steps to determine the need for the Carryover Request

Prior Approval,

Let's walk through system!

To access the Prior Approval tool, locate the grant for which you would like to request

a carryover request, and click on the Grant Folder link.

On the Grant Homepage click on the 'Request New Prior Approval link' under the Requests

column.

The system will navigate you to a Prior Approval Request - Acknowledge Documentation Review

page.

On this page users are encouraged to review the HHS Grant Policy document before acknowledging

the information listed in the 'Acknowledgement' section.

Once you have acknowledged the information in this section, click the 'Create' button.

Now you must select the Prior Approval Request Type.

You will need to select the option titled 'Carryover of Unobligated Balances' and

click the 'Create' button.

You will then be required to select a budget period from which you would like to carryover

funds.

Remember, this is the budget period that has an unobligated balance.

Once you have selected the previous budget, click the 'Continue' button.

If all of the previous steps have been completed correctly, you will see a success message

at the top of the Prior Approval Status Overview page.

Before you can submit your Prior Approval to HRSA, you will need to complete both the

'General Information' and 'Details' sections.

Let's start with the 'General Information section.

In this section you will need to select a Point of Contact and an Authorizing Official

for this request.

Once you've added both the Point of Contact and the Authorizing official, click 'Save

and Continue' to complete the page.

In the 'Details' section, you will be required to complete all sections that are

marked with a red asterisk.

Let's start with the carryover request section; please enter the unobligated balance listed in the Federal

Financial Report that is linked to this Prior Approval request.

To obtain the unobligated balance, let's click the FFR tracking number link.

A new window will open displaying the table of contents of your submitted FFR.

To access the unobligated balance, locate the Carryover request section and click the

'view' link under options.

This page will list the Unobligated balance that you will be entering into your Prior

Approval request.

Now let's navigate back to our Prior Approval request and enter the unobligated balance

into the carryover request field.

Were almost done!

There are three more required fields to complete and one optional section before you can submit

to HRSA.

The required sections are Cover letter and Narrative Explanation attachment, Budget Justification

attachment, and a comment box to provide a detailed description

of the request.

There is one optional field for an SF424A attachment.

Once both the General Information and the Details sections are marked as complete, navigate

to the Prior Approval review page to review the information that you have entered into

this request.

If the information entered is correct, click the 'Save and Continue' button to submit

to HRSA.

You will be taken to a confirmation page where you will acknowledge that the information

you entered is true and complete.

Once you have clicked the checkbox under the electronic signature section, click the 'Confirm'

button to officially submit your Prior Approval request to HRSA.

Now, you've successfully submitted your request to HRSA!

You will be navigated to the Prior Approval list page with a green success message confirming your

That Time It Rained for Two Million Years - Duration: 8:04.

Imagine a world so warm that the ocean feels like a hot tub.

Huge volcanic eruptions have pumped the air full of globe-warming carbon dioxide.

And with the continents locked together from pole-to-pole in the supercontinent of Pangea,

the world is hot, flat, and very, very dry.

Early reptiles and mammal ancestors thrive in this sweltering land, dominating a landscape

that's still struggling to recover from the Permian extinction.

This is Earth, 250 million years ago, at the beginning of the Triassic Period.

But then, starting around 234 million years ago, the climate suddenly changed, for the

wetter.

The rains finally came to this hot, dry world.

And then they stayed … for two million years.

This period of intense rain killed off many of the early reptiles and … confused the

heck out of the geologists who found the flood deposits millions of years later.

This time is known as the Carnian Pluvial Episode, and it set the stage for a new group

of animals to take over the world:

the dinosaurs.

Evidence of just how hot and dry the world was at the start of the Triassic is trapped

in the land beneath our feet.

Rocks from that period are mostly swaths of red sandstones and soil deposits from dry

woodlands, with no sign of the coal swamps that had covered the world during much of

the Permian.

And one major reason that the world was so dry was the shape of Pangea.

With all the continents locked together, rain clouds couldn't move much past the coastlines,

and there were no big mountain ranges to break up the low, arid land.

Now, dinosaurs did exist in this dry, post-Permian world.

But they were still vying for their place among early reptiles and reptile-like mammal

ancestors.

The dominant carnivores back then were the early crurotarsans, a broad group of croc-like

animals that included reptiles like pseudosuchians and phytosaurs.

For example, there was Ornithosuchus, which had long hind legs and could actually stand

up when it wanted to run, which I imagine would've been both awesome and terrifying to

actually see.

But even stranger than these were the rhynchosaurs, herbivores with parrot-like beaks and, sometimes,

cheekbones to die for, all on a chubby lizard body.

And although there were no true mammals, there were dicynodonts -- the closest things to

them at the time.

They're actually more closely related to us than, say, Dimetrodon, despite being scaly,

four-legged creatures with bills and tusks.

All of these fascinating creatures were widespread for most of the Triassic, with one species

of dicynodont – called Lystrosaurus – being so common all over the world that its fossils

were actually used to help construct the idea of Plate Tectonics

But these animals, adapted as they were to life in a dry climate, were in for a big shakeup.

Most of what we know about the history of the climate comes from plant fossils and rock

types.

And in the early 1990's, two British geologists found rocks that didn't match the dry climate

of the Triassic that they knew.

Instead of finding red, slowly-deposited sand, they found thick layers of river rocks, sediments

from giant lakes, and evidence of coal swamps.

All of these were signs of massive rainfall, over the course of some two million years.

But stranger still, these traces of a suddenly wet climate turned out to be everywhere, from

England to the Americas to Israel, in regions that were far apart at the time.

That meant the rise in rainfall must have been world-wide.

Initially, other geologists were skeptical.

Couldn't these rocks just be explained by a lot of big local floods?

Well, over the next two decades, reports of more and more weird rocks kept trickling in,

and they kept pointing to a world that was getting wetter and wetter.

The rocks revealed coal deposits in Austria, traces of ancient lakes in Italy, wet soils

in Utah, and giant rivers in China.

And they all dated to the same window of time -- between 232 and 234 million years ago.

In time, this phenomenon came to be known as the Carnian Pluvial Episode, or CPE.

The Carnian is the name of the geologic age within the Triassic when this all happened.

And for what it's worth I seriously thought about naming this episode the Chronicles of Carnia

but I didn't because that would have been dumb.

And "pluvial" means rain, and it rained a whole awful lot.

For example, one estimate suggests that the average annual rainfall in what's now Utah

almost quadrupled, reaching a peak of 1400 millimeters, or about 55 inches of rain a year.

For context, that's how much that a temperate rainforest gets today, like say, in the Pacific

Northwest.

And this would have happened over, and over, and over again, all around the world.

It was not one big flood; it was more like floods every year, all over the place, for

two million years.

And with all this rain, things were bound to change - and one of the biggest changes

was the sudden abundance of dinosaurs.

In rock dated to the start of the Carnian Pluvial Episode, dinosaurs account for about

5% of the fossils of terrestrial vertebrates.

But by the end, they make up more than 90% of those fossils.

So what made the dinosaurs so suddenly successful?

Were they better off than their competitors in this newly wet world?

Or did other animals simply die, leaving them to rule the world by default?

The key might not have been the rain itself, but what the rain brought with it: a proliferation

of giant plants!

During this time, we begin to see lots of large conifers, and big coal-forming plants,

like the primordial-looking Bennettitales.

For herbivores, this change in food supply could have been a game changer.

For example, rhynchosaurs were abundant, but they were also … short.

And they couldn't stand on their hind legs to reach higher leaves.

This would've been fine in a dry environment, where plants tend to stay close to the ground.

But in a wet forest, rhynchosaurs would've only been able to eat smaller plants, or whatever

leaves and fruit fell to the ground.

Meanwhile, dicynodonts were herbivores, too, but they didn't have teeth.

And, they also didn't use gastroliths, the rocks that some animals - like birds - swallow

to help digest plant material.

Without teeth or gastroliths, dicynodonts would have had a hard time eating anything

fibrous, like wood.

And sure enough, fossils of dicynodont poop from this time have been found to contain

the digested remains of mostly soft ferns, with only very small amounts of wood.

By comparison, some plant-eating dinosaurs - which had both teeth and gastroliths - left

us poop fossils that are up to 85% wood!

Which is a lot of fiber.

So as the climate became wetter, soft small ferns were quickly replaced by tall woody

conifers, which the dicynodonts and rhynchosaurs didn't eat.

And without the rhynchosaurs and dicynodonts, then the carnivores -- those crurotarsans

-- would've lost a lot of their food supply.

So maybe, instead of being better-adapted to this new environment, dinosaurs were just

the only major group of reptiles left standing.

Or, y'know, squatting.

Even though we don't know exactly why the rain helped the dinosaurs, we do know that

dinosaurs became a lot more abundant during the Carnian Pluvial Episode.

And the dicynodonts, the rhynchosaurs and many of the early crurotarsans soon went extinct.

Now, there's still the question of: What made it rain for two million years in the

first place?

Well, right before the rains came, some 235 million years ago, a huge burst of volcanic

activity took place in Alaska and British Columbia.

Today it's known as the Wrangellian eruptions.

These eruptions lasted for more than 5 million years, churning out a layer of lava that got

to be 6 kilometers thick, and releasing enough CO2 to raise temperatures by about 3 to 10

degrees Celsius worldwide.

And, over a very long time, warmer temperatures can create a wetter climate, because they

can speed up the water cycle, driving more evaporation of surface water into the atmosphere,

among other things.

And in fact, because of this increase in atmospheric moisture, the CPE is also sometimes called

the Carnian Humid Episode.

But for what it's worth, my favorite name for this episode by far is The Wet Intermezzo.

Which I think is delightful so let's try to bring that term back, OK?

Anyway, after about a million years of volcanic activity, the atmosphere became so warm and

wet that rain could finally reach even Pangea's vast interior.

OK but then, how did it stop?

Well, when carbon levels are really high for a really long time, our planet can be pretty

good at getting some of the extra carbon back into the ground where it belongs.

Plants take it in and store it in their tissues; weathering and eroding rocks absorb it; and

the oceans soak it up to form carbonate rocks like limestone.

So as the Wrangellian eruptions slowed down, the carbon cycle was eventually able to stabilize,

excess CO2 was reabsorbed from the atmosphere, and the CPE gradually came to an end.

By the time the eruptions had completely ended 230 million years ago, the world had returned

to a classically hot, dry Triassic climate that only ended when Pangea began to break

up.

But even though the Carnian Pluvial Episode was short - only 2 million years – its impacts

on life were permanent.

All that rainfall helped conifers spread and diversify, leading to the pine trees we know

today.

And while the start of the Triassic may have been the land of weird, croc-like-things running

on their hind legs by the time the rains had ended, the world

had fully entered the age of dinosaurs.

Thanks for joining me for this wet intermezzo!

Matthew Reeves: Down for life with the barber trade - Duration: 1:25.

Well growing up in Levin we were broke, cheap, skaters

So the boys would just come around during lunch or whatever and take to it with some kitchen scissors.

I started Cuba Barbers in October last year

Yeah, since then I've just come into my own and

just progressed everyday and grown as a person and also a barber

Me and my boss have quite a good relationship

And I think he kind of wants someone younger come through, get their tickets, get qualified and then

you know by the time I might not even be 25 and I can have apprentices underneath me and what not

You know like last I told my mum was just won this competition keeps barbering and stuff

And now I think I started to see kind of how cool it isn't all that and see that

I'm doing it and you know getting right stuck in

So I think they are quite proud now I was like never really

Competed hard out before but I just felt good that I've kind of finally found something that obviously people notice

I've got something that sets me apart from the rest, you know

You know, I guess it's just step after step I don't really know

We're the top is yet but I want to be cutting here at least for the next 10 or 15 years and still after that

I think I definitely think I'm down for life in a barber trade

No Injection Instrument Blanks for GC - Duration: 1:55.

[Music]

Thanks for joining us for this Restek Tip where we will talk about no injection instrument blanks,

which are a really useful tool for scouting out where contamination that you're observing

in your data might be coming from. So, let's say you've got some unwanted peaks.

Now, they're peaks. They're sharp. They look like the other chromatographic peaks.

They aren't blobs. So you know this extraneous material is coming from before the column

because it's passing through the chromatographic system and being chromatographed.

That's why we see them as peaks. But, where? Could it be coming from inside of your inlet

or somewhere farther up the gas stream in your instrument?

Or is it coming from outside of your instrument?

Say you have a dirty rinse vial or syringe or maybe even your sample itself.

Well, one easy way to at least divide inside from outside of the instrument is to perform

a no injection instrument blank, which is exactly how it sounds.

You run your analysis without making an injection. And if you do that and still see the peaks present,

well then that's your sure fire sign that you have contamination originated from

somewhere inside the instrument. Maybe it's an O-ring or a piece of cored septa that's landed in your liner.

But if those peaks go away, during a no injection instrument blank,

now you know to focus your attention outside of the instrument.

So no injection instrument blanks really help you focus your troubleshooting,

save some time and I have found them to be particularly helpful.

So, thank you for joining us for this Restek Tip and good luck.

Counsel for Louisiana Mid-Continent Oil and Gas Association says industry looks for fairness - Duration: 2:47.

You mentioned that your main concern is that say the legislature and the

governor presumably are fair-- so just throwing this out to you what

would be unfair?

So one of the things especially at the petrochemical

manufacturing process you will pay utility tax on sales and use tax for

business utilities this what is the sale of steam, water natural gas and

electricity. Now from a refinery there are two separate into two separate

processes of which that's taxed. You have the natural gas that's used in the

manufacturing process which actually used to power boilers or there are

efficient processes that they use in order to capture refinery gas or reuse

it or whatever they're doing. However you also have the administrative buildings

right? So so if you have an organization like McDonald's or Walmart they would

pay tax at 2% to 4% sales tax on business utilities, however, what we

like prefer to happen is to be separated that way you have the manufacturing

piece is not taxed. Right? The pieces that are used in the creation of gasoline and

diesel or other petroleum products we would prefer that it remain either

the administration building is paying those business utilities but not used in

the manufacturing process because we'd have no problem paying our fair share as

part of the whole process that's but it's not about-- you know-- we want to be

treated equally as sales of some of the other business groups, not be unfairly

burdened with the revenue raisers that include paying tax on the actual

manufacturing process, natural gas steam water and electricity

to run those units because that's different then you know just powering a

building or which is what normally most businesses pay.

Do you see any concern at all coming up

with this special session?

It currently is taxed at 4% and will be

until July 1st when it'll drop down to 1% so yeah we're concerned about it. We

hope that it will not be part of the package that ends up moving forward but

we will continue to work with legislators, the governor or whatever we

can to make sure to communicate this this message of maintaining sort of

an equal share and proportionate impact and not unfairly tax on the

petrochemical side for those business utilities used in the manufacturing

process
