NERMEEN SHAIKH: New information is emerging about U.S. State Department guidance issued
the day President Trump signed an executive order temporarily banning all refugees, as
well as all citizens from seven Muslim-majority nations—Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan,
Syria and Yemen—from entering the United States.
WBUR has acquired a department memo dated January 27th that provisionally revokes all
nonimmigrant and immigrant visas of nationals from the seven countries as of Friday.
According to the memo, the revocation does not apply to diplomatic visas.
AMY GOODMAN: Well, for more, we go to Seattle, Washington, where we're joined by Matt Adams,
legal director for the Northwest Immigrant Rights Project, lead counsel for a class action
lawsuit challenging Donald Trump's executive order.
His lawsuit was filed in Seattle on behalf of three parents legally living in the U.S.
who are now restricted from bringing their children from Somalia, Syria and Yemen.
Matt, welcome to Democracy Now!
Tell us who your clients are and what's happened in the last week.
MATT ADAMS: Thank you.
Our clients are three parents.
One is—two of them are United States citizens, and one of them is a lawful permanent resident.
And so we have, for example, a Syrian mother, a lawful permanent resident, who lives here
in Seattle and has been separated from her child, a 16-year-old boy.
She's filed a visa petition.
It's been approved.
He is in desperate circumstances in war-torn Syria.
And now, after she submitted her application with the consulate, the president has issued
this order, putting an indefinite hold and separation between her and her child.
We have another.
A mother and a father are both United States citizens.
They have two other daughters who are here, also U.S. citizens, who are separated from
their 12-year-old daughter, who is not.
Their application had already been processed, had already been approved.
The father went to pick up his daughter, who's from Yemen.
They had to travel to Jordan.
Yemen is so dangerous that our own U.S. Consulate has pulled out of that.
So they had their interview in Jordan.
It was approved.
They showed up at the airport.
And when they arrived at the airport, they were told the father, of course, can get on
the plane, because he's a U.S. citizen, but the 12-year-old daughter has to stay behind.
And, of course, what is the father to do?
Right now, him and his daughter are left in a desperate situation.
He doesn't know what he can do.
He can't send her back to the danger that exists in Yemen.
We have one other client, a mother who is, again, a U.S. citizen, and her 6-year-old
daughter is left in Somalia.
And again, an application has—a visa petition has already been approved.
The application went forward with the consulate.
And now President Trump has said, no, these children are a threat to our national security,
because they come from predominantly Muslim countries that have been targeted.
And a hold has been placed on them and hundreds of others who are like them, who've reached
out to us.
And so, these individuals are bringing a lawsuit not just on behalf of themselves, but others
who are similarly situated.
AMY GOODMAN: Well, Matt Adams, can you just tell us what is the status of your lawsuit
now?
What are you arguing?
MATT ADAMS: We are arguing that this executive order blatantly violates not only the United
States Constitution and its guarantee of equal protection for all under the law and its guarantee
of due process for all, but it violates the Immigration and Nationality Act, which explicitly
states that visas will be issued without discriminating based on national origin or country of birth.
And yet that's precisely what Trump has done with his executive order, is said, "I'm
going to target these individuals because they come from a country, not because of anything
to do with them individually."
And, in fact, it's absurd on its face, if you look at it and say, "How in the world
can he be trying to tie this to national security, when he's barring children from coming in
to be reunited with their parents, their parents who are already living here, their parents
who are United States citizens and lawful permanent residents?"
AMY GOODMAN: Well, Matt Adams, we want to thank you for being with us.
We hope to have you on in the coming days with your clients.

Nazis Once Published List of Jewish Crimes, Trump Now Pushing to Do the Same for Immigrant Crimes - Duration: 5:10.
AMY GOODMAN: Can you talk about what President Trump has said he's going to do: keep a
list of, quote, "immigrant crimes"?
ANDREA PITZER: Well, this weekly report that he has called for recalls a number of things
from the past that we have seen before, which is this move to isolate and identify and then
vilify a vulnerable minority community in order to move against it.
When he—I just went back last night and reread his speech from when he declared his
candidacy, and the Mexican rapist comment was in from the beginning, and so this has
been a theme throughout.
And we see back in Nazi Germany there was a paper called—a Nazi paper called Der Stürmer,
and they had a department called "Letter Box," and readers were invited to send in stories
of supposed Jewish crimes.
And Der Stürmer would publish them, and they would include some pretty horrific graphic
illustrations of these crimes, as well.
And there was even a sort of a lite version of it, if you will, racism lite, in which
the Neues Volk, which was more like a Look or a Life magazine, which normally highlighted
beautiful Aryan families and their beautiful homes, would run a feature like "The Criminal
Jew," and they would show photos of "Jewish-looking," as they called it, people who represented
different kinds of crimes that one ought to watch out for from Jews.
So this preoccupation with focusing in on one subset of the population's crimes and
then depicting that as somehow depraved and abnormal from the main population is something
we've seen quite a bit in the past, even in the U.S.
Before Japanese-American internment, you had newspapers like the San Francisco Chronicle
running about the unassimilability of the Japanese immigrants and also the crime tendencies
and depravities they had, which were distinguished from the main American population.
JUAN GONZÁLEZ: And, of course, this flies in the face of all studies that have shown
that the crime rate among immigrant populations in the United States is actually lower than
it is among ordinary American citizens, but yet this is attempting to take isolated incidents
or particular crimes and sort of raise them to the level of a general trend, isn't it?
ANDREA PITZER: It is.
And I think it's part of a disturbing narrative in which you strip out the broader context
and the specificity of actions like this, and you try to weave them into this preset
narrative of good and evil somehow, that really ends up being simple and dishonest and very
counterproductive for the society as a whole.
But yes, in general, these groups would want to keep a lower profile.
They would want to stay off law enforcement's radar.
And so, this is one of the reasons that's been suspected that it's actually a lower
crime rate.
But if you get a few dramatic images—and don't forget now, this won't be coming
out—you know, Breitbart has had this "black crimes" tag that they've used to try to
do a similar thing in the past.
And now we have Bannon in the White House.
And it's sort of a scaling-up and doing this with a different minority group, and
you'll have these, what will no doubt be, very dramatic narratives that will come forward
that will eclipse the larger picture.
And they're going to have the imprimatur of a government report, which I think is another
disturbing aspect.
AMY GOODMAN: I wanted to ask you, Andrea Pitzer, about the White House considering a plan to
make visitors reveal cellphone, internet data.
Describe the role mass surveillance plays in authoritarian societies.
ANDREA PITZER: Well, over time, we've seen that it's very hard to have an authoritarian
or a totalitarian society, a state that runs, without a secret police.
And you can't—what you need the secret police for is to gather information secretly.
The surveillance techniques and abilities that we have today are really unparalleled
in history.
And while we can't yet be sure what the Trump administration's motives are, what
they have at their disposal is far greater than what was had in Soviet Russia, in Nazi
Germany.
I'm thinking in particular of Himmler complaining that he had trouble keeping track of all the
people he needed to, because he needed so many agents.
But when you have the kind of technology that we do, you don't need as many people, if
you have the right tools to use.
And so, the ability to gather that kind of information and then potentially use it, domestically
or on foreigners who happen to be here, I think is something that's worth paying attention
to and to be concerned about.
AMY GOODMAN: That's Andrea Pitzer, journalist and author who writes about lost and forgotten
history.
Her upcoming book, One Long Night: A Global History of Concentration Camps.

Impeccability - Duration: 10:32.
Hi Everybody, It's Elizabeth Schnugh, I'm doing our next vlog which I said I would do
on the subject of impeccability.
Just so that you know where I am coming from with these blogs or vlogs, as we call them
these days.
I have discovered through my own life that one of the things I did get growing up was
academic schooling, so I always thought I was like really very clever and very smart
and I did well with all the intellectual activities that we always had and I did well at school
and then when I got to University I continued along the same vein and then I started to
enter life proper - and that is where I started to hit my head against a brick wall.
But notwithstanding this I still managed to become very successful and went into the corporate
world and got myself a big job there and everything that goes with it, but eventually even in
that area, which was a safe area for me, things started to fall apart - and it is at that
point that I started my journey of looking to see why it was that with everything that
I thought I had at the tips of my fingers I just wasn't getting my life inwardly to
work.
And that's when I discovered that I had academic schooling, but I hadn't had true
education as such, so for me these vlogs are very much a sharing of my own experience and
my life, of the tools that I have picked up along the way, all the practical tools I have
picked up along the way and would like to share them with you.
And really these tools aren't anything new to you or I, I'm sure, but what I am sharing
is that, when you are getting something right in your life, or you actually feel like you
are winning and you are actually progressing in some way or another, what we don't realise
is that in every single process of that we have actually gone through a step by step
process.
There has been a logical one step after the other and so when we get things 'right'
we think that it is a major fluke, that it is something out of the ordinary, sometimes
even a miracle that we managed to actually get something right, so to speak.
And then when we're not actually making progress in some way or another, we think
we are doing something 'wrong', whereas in actual fact all we need is a course correction.
And so the tools that I am going to give you are really to share what those steps are that
you have been taking when you are actually moving forward in your life and so that when
you do get into any sort of a place, you can retrace your steps and you can say "Okay
I did that step, I did that step and – oh! it's this one I missed, it's this one.
So if I put that into place now then I've done my course correction and I am on my way".
So what I'm wanting to share today is on the subject or topic of impeccability.
I did say in my first vlog when I was talking about our approach to 2017 that if you add
up the numbers 2, the 1 and the 7 you are going to get a 10 and I will share a link
at the end of this vlog where you can get access to the book that I use on numerology,
the material that I use to work out all the numbers in my life and so this is very much
based on that and the number 10 is the number of impeccability.
What does this actually mean?
Now this is one word that if we were all taught this when we were little, we could make great
strides in improving our self image.
All of us, and it never ceases to amaze me, I have people coming into course rooms/retreat
rooms from all over the world, from all continents and the one thing that we have in common right
across this planet, is that we are all subjected to the same social conditioning, the same
rules of society.
Which if you had to boil it down to one thing would be the 'disease to please' as Oprah
would probably call it.
It's wanting to do things for other people's approval and we start that process when we
are very little.
I can cover that in another vlog in more detail, but I just wanted to share that when it comes
to the word impeccability, if we were all taught this right across the planet, the self
image of each one of us would improve dramatically - and it's never too late to start.
So what does impeccability actually mean?
Because we do create with the words that we use, so we need to actually be very careful
in trying to understand each other, to keep on checking "Well, what do you mean by that,
what do you mean by using that word?"
And so I share with you our definition of impeccability which is simply 'to do the
best that you can at any given moment in time using all the information and the knowledge
that you have in that moment'.
When I talk about knowledge I am talking about the knowledge that has come from your own
practical experience.
You have had certain experiences in life and out of that you have learned certain things,
to do them or not to do them again and you have created your own knowledge bank.
So whenever something comes along in our life, a challenge or whatever it may be, the first
place we are going to dip into is that knowledge bank of ours.
Or we might have had a lot of information about something, but not necessarily a practical
experience.
But when a challenge comes along, that is the way to approach it.
We will actually look for the knowledge and the information we have in that moment - and
sometimes it is 'a split second'.
We don't have 5 minutes or 10 minutes to sit and work out what to do next.
But as long as we are doing our best in that moment - and that is the critical part 'in
that moment' - using all the information and the knowledge we have at our fingertips
in that moment then that is when we are being impeccable.
When I say it is to do the very best that you can, what do I mean by doing?
You see there I need to clarify as well.
Doing for me, includes whatever I am feeling about something or somebody, I'm going to
be having thoughts about it, I'm going to be having feelings, I'm going to be having
emotions about it.
Now am I actually going to be speaking what I feel? ....or am I going to be feeling one
thing and saying another thing, and then even doing another thing?
..So doing for me the best that you can must mean that, in that moment at any one point
in time, your feelings, your emotions and your words, your actions must all be in synchronisation
with each other; they must all be in sync.
Just so that you know, I have been told and I possibly should have said this at the beginning,
is that I do have a funny accent!
It's a South African accent for those who don't know and hence the sub titles that
we are now putting onto the vlog so that at least you can grasp what I am saying.
So to give you a practical example then, in the previous vlog, it was my maiden one, a
first one that I did, I actually put it together, presented it, put it on to Y-tube and then
I started to get feedback that 'I wish I could actually understand your accent',
or 'I only get a little bit of what you are saying and I'm trying to grasp, but
I really want to listen but I can't understand your accent!'
And so I now have got somebody who used to work for me at the Institute for the Study
of Man many years ago, Christina Botton, who is now in New Zealand and I'm in Cape Town,
South Africa, and she is now transcribing the vlogs for me, so at least we can have
the sub-titles and you can grasp what it is I'm saying.
So, did I feel bad about the fact that nobody could understand, or very few people could
understand my accent, especially if you haven't met me before in person?
Well, I could have felt really bad and I could have felt a failure and I could have thought
' Wow, you know I really could have done that differently', but you see, in that
moment that I did that vlog it didn't occur to me that people would struggle with my accent...one
second later, one moment later, I can get different information coming to me and now
it's time for me to make a course correction.
So in that instance I was impeccable, I was being true to myself in that I did what I
felt was the best at the time and I carried it through in my actions.
Now that I have got new information, it would be very remiss of me to produce another vlog
which does not have any sub titles.
I hope that that has given you a practical scenario, a practical application of what
I mean by impeccability.
So if you are ever going to look back in your life, only ever, ever look back to see how
far you have come, don't ever look back to make yourself wrong, because whatever you
did back then, a year ago, two years ago, a week ago or 30 years ago, if you feel and
you know in your heart you did it with the very best of intentions and you did the very
best you could with what you had at your fingertips as information and knowledge at that time,
then you were impeccable.
The mere fact that 5 minutes, 5 years or 50 years later you get new information, does
not make what you did wrong!
And this is so critical if you are a parent and if you are a child of a parent!
If your parents did the best they could with all the knowledge that they had available
to them and the information at that point in time, when you were growing up, then they
did the best they could, they were impeccable.
I hope that helps you a little bit in terms of your approach to this year.
If that is the only thing that you work with this year, your approach to a 10 year, so
we don't fall into old traps -is to do the very best that you can at any given moment
in time using all the information and the knowledge that you have in this moment.
Thank you for listening and if you have any suggestions for any future vlogs please send
an email to us, the details are at the end of this vlog.

Meet Our People - Shirley, Director of Family Services for DSCYF - Duration: 2:47.
If you are interested in working with children and family the Division of Family Services
is a great place to begin that work.
This is very serious work and it is a difficult field but there is no field that is more rewarding.
and to recognize the difficulty of that we have a very in depth training curriculum so
that our staff are very prepared for the work that they're going to do.
So as staff come in the door they are assigned a mentor.
They are assigned a coach.
They have an opportunity to get classroom experience and to also have experiences of
what they've learned and be able to take that back to the classroom.
So we really do a great investment to make sure our staff are prepared that every applicant
has the tools that they need as they go into the field and what is, what we really are
looking for are staff and employees that have a passion for working with children and families.
certainly there is a requirement to have a bachelors degree in the human service field
so that is not just sociology or psychology there are some other human service fields
that our also related to those fields that would make an applicant eligible for the position.
There is no day that is like any other day so we need someone who is flexible.
Who doesn't mind having a variation in their schedule.
Who is able to, may have a plan in place but is able to change on a dime and move their
schedule and their planning for the day in a very different direction.
Every day our staff intervene and not just improve the lives of children but we know
many instances where because of our intervention a child's life was saved.
I have been in this field for many years and I have seen children interacted with children
that are grown up and are now parents and some of them are even grandparents who really
have talked about the impact that this agency had on their family and on their lives.
We every day save children, and we save families.

YURKOV 2percesek III. rész • A FÉRFI ING / Shirts for men - Duration: 2:11.
Hi everyone! This is YURKOV's 2minute Vlog.
For the next 3 occasions we will strictly and only deal with men. Blazer and shirt: these will be our two topics.
Shirts for men
Let's see what is a good shirt like!
First of all the main criterion for a shirt is that it is a long sleeved shirt.
There are two types of shirt, one is the cuff buttoned cuffed shirt, the other is the plain buttoned cuffed shirt.
No more. There is no short sleeved shirt.
Many of my male clients ask me why they can't wear short sleeved shirts.
Since this is only a 2 minute vlog, I can only give a short answer: because it is lame.
It doesn't look good, it gives an ungraceful character.
The only good situation to wear a short sleeved shirt is if you are in Hawaii or if you are Tom Selleck.
In other cases: don't.
They also ask me: alright, I understand that it is lame and we don't wear it on weekdays but maybe at the beach, where it is hot, can I wear it?
No. Because it is lame there too.
At the beach the best recommendation is a linen shirt, with rolled up sleeves.
It is crazy sexy the way a long sleeved shirt is rolled up and there is the male forearm.
So the most important message regarding the shirt is: it is long sleeved.
