Trump to welcome Netanyahu as Palestinians fear U.S. shift
President Donald Trump prepared to host Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Wednesday
for talks that could shape the contours of future Middle East policy, as Palestinians
warned the White House not to abandon their goal of an independent state.
For decades, the idea of creating a Palestine living peacefully alongside Israel has been
a bedrock U.S. position, though the last negotiations broke down in 2014.
But in a potential shift, a senior White House official said on Tuesday that peace did not
necessarily have to entail Palestinian statehood, and Trump would not try to "dictate" a solution.
As Trump and Netanyahu prepared to meet, a senior Palestinian official disclosed that
on Tuesday, CIA director Mike Pompeo held talks with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas
in Ramallah, the seat of the Palestinian government in the occupied West Bank.
"(It was) the first official meeting with a high-profile member of the American administration
since Trump took office," said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity and declined
to disclose details of the discussion.
Netanyahu committed, with conditions, to the two-state goal in a speech in 2009 and has
broadly reiterated the aim since.
But he has also spoken of a "state minus" option, suggesting he could offer the Palestinians
deep-seated autonomy and the trappings of statehood without full sovereignty.
Palestinians reacted with alarm to the possibility that Washington might ditch its support for
an independent Palestinian nation.
"If the Trump Administration rejects this policy it would be destroying the chances
for peace and undermining American interests, standing and credibility abroad," Hanan Ashrawi,
a senior member of the Palestine Liberation Organization, said in response to the U.S.
official's remarks.
"Accommodating the most extreme and irresponsible elements in Israel and in the White House
is no way to make responsible foreign policy," she said in a statement.
Husam Zomlot, strategic adviser to Abbas, said the Palestinians had not received any
official indication of a change in the U.S. stance.
"NO GAPS"
For Netanyahu, the talks with Trump will be an opportunity to reset ties after a frequently
combative relationship with Democrat Barack Obama.
The prime minister, under investigation at home over allegations of abuse of office,
spent much of Tuesday huddled with advisers in Washington preparing for the talks.
Officials said they wanted no gaps to emerge between U.S. and Israeli thinking during the
scheduled two-hour Oval Office meeting.
Trump, who has been in office less than four weeks and has already been immersed in problems
including the forced resignation of his national security adviser, brings with him an unpredictability
that Netanyahu's staff hope will not impinge on the discussions.
During last year's election campaign, Republican candidate Trump was relentlessly pro-Israel
in his rhetoric, promising to move the U.S. embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, backing
David Friedman, an ardent supporter of Jewish settlements, as his Israeli envoy and saying
that he would not put pressure on Israel to negotiate with the Palestinians.
That tune, which was music to Netanyahu's ears and to the increasingly restive right-wing
within his coalition, has since changed, making Wednesday's talks critical for clarity.
Trump appears to have put the embassy move on the backburner, at least for now, after
warnings about the potential for regional unrest, including from Jordan's King Abdullah.
And rather than giving Israel free rein on settlements, the White House has said building
new ones or expanding existing ones beyond their current borders would not be helpful
to peace.
That would appear to leave Israel room to build within existing settlements without
drawing U.S. condemnation, in what is the sort of gray area the talks are expected to
touch on.
For the Palestinians, and much of the rest of the world, settlements built on occupied
land are illegal under international law.
Israel disputes that, but faces increasing criticism over the policy from allies, especially
after Netanyahu's announcement in the past three weeks of plans to build 6,000 new settler
homes in the West Bank and East Jerusalem.
Palestinians caution Trump against abandoning two-state concept
Palestinians warned the United States on Wednesday against abandoning a two-state solution to
the conflict with Israel after a White House official said peace did not necessarily have
to entail Palestinian statehood.
U.S. President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu meet later in
the day for the first time since the U.S. election in November that brought the Republican
to office.
On the eve of the meeting, a senior White House official said it was up to the Israelis
and Palestinians themselves to decide on the shape of any future peace.
"Whether that comes in the form of a two–state solution if that's what the parties want,
or something else," the official said, adding that Trump, while giving peace "high priority"
would not try to "dictate" an agreement.
For Palestinians, who seek a state in the Israeli-occupied West Bank, East Jerusalem
and in the Gaza Strip, even the notion of a U.S. retreat from the internationally backed
goal of a future Palestine existing alongside Israel was alarming.
"If the Trump Administration rejects this policy it would be destroying the chances
for peace and undermining American interests, standing and credibility abroad," Hanan Ashrawi,
a senior member of the Palestine Liberation Organization, said in response to the U.S.
official's remarks.

But given regional instability and long-running divisions in Palestinian politics, many in
his cabinet argue the time is not ripe for a Palestinian state to emerge.

West Bank, which was among the territory Israel captured in the 1967 Middle East war.
Netanyahu has not endorsed that demand.
Commenting on the White House official's remarks, Husam Zomlot, strategic affairs adviser to
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, noted that Palestinian statehood has long been at
the heart of international peace efforts.
"The two-state solution is not something we just came up with.
It is an international consensus and decision after decades of Israel's rejection of the
one-state democratic formula," Zomlot told Reuters in Jerusalem by telephone from the
West Bank city of Ramallah.
On his departure for Washington on Monday, Netanyahu sidestepped a question on whether
he still backed a two-state solution, saying he would make his position clear in the U.S.
capital.
But he has spoken of a "state minus," suggesting he could offer the Palestinians deep-seated
autonomy - they already exercise limited self-rule in the West Bank under interim deals - and
the trappings of statehood without full sovereignty.
Russian jets in 'unsafe' encounters with destroyer U.S. official
Multiple Russian military aircraft came close to a U.S. Navy destroyer in the Black Sea
on Feb. 10, incidents considered "unsafe and unprofessional," a U.S. official said on Tuesday.
The Russian Defense Ministry said no such incidents had occurred.
"There were no incidents of any kind on Feb. 10, related to flights by Russian military
jets in the Black Sea near the U.S. Navy destroyer Porter," Russian news agencies cited a spokesman
for the Russian Defense Ministry, Major-General Igor Konashenkov, as saying.
But Captain Danny Hernandez, a spokesman for U.S. European Command, cited three separate
incidents involving Russian aircraft and the USS Porter.
One involved two Russian Su-24 jets, another a separate Su-24, and the third a larger IL-38.
"USS Porter queried all aircraft and received no response," Hernandez said.
"Such incidents are concerning because they can result in accident or miscalculation,"
he added.
The incidents involving the Su-24 were considered to be unsafe and unprofessional by the commanding
officer of the Porter because of their high speed and low altitude, while the IL-38 flew
at an unusually low altitude, Hernandez said.
Another U.S. official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the lone Su-24 came within
200 yards (meters) of the Porter at an altitude of 300 feet (90 meters).
In April 2016 two Russian warplanes flew simulated attack passes near a U.S. guided missile destroyer
in the Baltic Sea so close that they created wake in the water.
Kremlin denies allegations it violated U.S. missile treaty
Russia is committed to honoring its international obligations, including in relation to missiles,
the Kremlin said on Wednesday, responding to reports it had violated a treaty with the
United States by deploying a new ground-based missile.
"Russia has been and remains committed to its international commitments, including to
the treaty in question," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said in a daily telephone briefing.
"Nobody has formally accused Russia of violating the treaty," he said.
On Tuesday, media reported, citing U.S. officials, that Russia had deployed a ground-launched
cruise missile despite U.S. complaints that this violated an arms control treaty banning
ground-based U.S. and Russian intermediate-range missiles.
China drone maker courts online matchmaker Zhenai
Zhenai.com, one of China's largest matchmaking websites, has found itself an unlikely suitor
in drone manufacturer DEA General Aviation (002260.SZ) that said on Wednesday it wants
to buy the popular dating website to expand its business.
DEA said Zhenai reported 1 billion yuan ($145.59 million) in revenue last year and that it
plans to integrate the dating website into its home appliance business to heed Beijing's
so-called "Internet Plus" strategy.
The drone maker said in a statement it had suspended trading in its shares because of
the potential deal, without giving details on how much it would pay for Zhenai, which
sounds like "true love" in Chinese.
Zhenai, which has more than 100 million registered users, could not be immediately reached for
a comment.

An Indian man was arrested on suspicion of smuggling gold after customs officers saw him walking in a suspicious manner after walking off a plane in Hyderabad.
Officials searched his bags and found eight gold bars weighing a total of 800 grams hidden inside LED lights.
However, suspicious customs officers decided to x-ray the suspect and discovered a further 12 bars of gold which had been inserted before boarding the four-and-a-half hour flight from Singapore to Hyderabad.

In total, the man was carrying 2kg of gold worth an estimated £70,000. The man arrived at Rajiv Gandhi airport in Hyderabad around 1am on Sunday.
Gold in India is worth significantly more than it is in either Singapore or Dubai meaning it is an attractive commodity for smugglers.
One customs agent said: 'A smuggler bringing gold pieces concealed in his rectum is often an expert. That's because not anyone can move with ease when gold pieces are in the rear'.

Hold the position for a few seconds, taking several deep breaths.
Press your shoulder blades to your back, lower your tailbone toward the floor and draw in
your abdomen.
Hold this position for at least 30 seconds and focus on your breathing.
Straighten up slowly.
Repeat the cycle a few times more.

So let's learn something about the structure of the earth today.
It consists of the Crust, Mantle and Core!

It consists of all kinds of rocks, soil and everything you see above the earth's surface.
You will be surprised to know that the crust, is the land on which we walk.
It is almost three times thicker than the crust under the oceans.
And it extends to about 40 km.
The earth's crust floats on this layer which is called the Mantle.
It is made of thick, solid, rocky substance.
And amounts to about 85% of the total mass of earth.
The first 80 Kilometers of the mantle consist of very hard, rigid rocks.
The next 241 Kilometers are made up of super-hot solid rock.
Below that, for the next several kilometers, it is believed that..
..the earth's mantle is made up of very solid and sturdy rock materials.
The mantle is about 2800 Kilometers thick and by far the largest layer of earth.
The earth's outer core is made up of super- hot liquid molten substance called Lava.
This lava is believed to be made of iron and nickel.
It extends to a depth of 4800 km beneath the earth's surface.
And finally, we have reached earth's inner core.
The inner core extends another 1400 Kilometers towards the center of the earth.
It is believed that this inner core is a solid ball made of iron and nickel.

observing and listening to those around
me now i feel like this is very
important because the more I listen
the more I learn about others in the
situation and then I also learn more of
how I can actually connect to these
individuals the when it comes to
individuals who talk the talk and don't
walk the walk
I am more interested in learning from
the individual who isn't running their
mouth and talking trash or talking
about how great they are rather I'm more
interested in the person who is quite
about it they have a little bit of like
solace to them and you know that there's
more than a little bit of mystery to me
but you know that there's more to who
they are and what what they do and what
they're capable of and these individuals
that that I pay a bit more attention to
because oftentimes these individuals
realize that it's smarter to listen
rather than to act or act out as these
individuals usually take a greater
assessment of the situation so my
challenge is for you today; instead of
going out there and and not that you do
this but going out there and
and just sharing everything about
yourself rather I want you to take the
time to listen to what someone else has
to say and or look to learn more about
another one of the best things you can
do in trying to get them to know
someone is ask more questions about
them than you do talk about yourself

How Balance of Reinforcement and Demand for Your Child or Client With Autism - Duration: 4:03.
Hi everyone this is Dr. Mary Barbera,
autism mom, BCBA-D and best-selling author.
I've been working with children with
autism for almost two decades now as a
board certified behavior analyst. Early
on in my career, when I would see
children with problem behaviors with
autism and in autism classrooms mainly, a
few things were coming to my mind. First I
would think - what is this child like at
home?
What do they do on the weekends when
there's no structure no academic demands?
What does the child do during their
downtime and do they have problem
behaviors across the board at home and
at school? It was often difficult to find
out this information and so I started to
ask teachers what part of the day if any
would this child not engage in
problem behaviors.
Do they have problem behaviors when
they're on the computer, for instance, or
when they were at lunch or recess? Even
if there was just one part of the day
with no problem behaviors, that's where
we start. I came up with this analogy and
I would tell teachers and parents in my
lectures around the world that if I gave
you $1000 for your child
or clients have a good day free from
problem behaviors,
what would you do? Some teachers stated
that they would let the child play on
the computer all day or give them the
ipad and not that not make them do any
work to earn the prize of a $1000.
One parent said that she would
let her child stay in his pajamas, not go to
school, eat anything they want and he
could line things up around the house,
which was his favorite thing to do. So
whether your parent or professional
listening to this video blog you're
probably thinking Mary this is just not
reality.
We can't let kids stay in their pajamas
all day, stay home from school and if
they show up at school we can't let them
do whatever they want because we have
IEP goals to master and a classroom full
full of children who can't do their own
thing all the time.
Well I know it's difficult to think
about raising the reinforcement
and lowering the demands so
much that you could get a $1000,
this is oftentimes what kids need. And
once you have the reinforcement really
high and the demands really low, then you
can start increasing the demand and
decreasing the reinforcement and this is
often where we start. When I see kids
having problem behaviors, we look for
parts of the day that are easier and more
reinforcing and we increase those
reinforcing times, decrease the difficult
demands and then once we have a child
free of problem behaviors we can start
making that scale more even - with raising
the demands and lowering the
reinforcement. If you see a child having
problem behaviors
my guess is that the demands are too
high and the reinforcement is too low. If we
flip that scale and start pairing
ourselves with reinforcements, easing in the
demands and start gradually shaping up
more demands, I think the child will do
better both at home and at school setting. So
think about the $1000 prize
and try to turn things around for your
child or client with autism by using this analogy.
