SMASH BROS ULTIMATE!!!
AAAAAA WOOOOAH YEEEEESSSSSSS
WHAT THE HECK IS THAT!!!
No no go back, what was… what is that!?
What the heck...
WHAAATTTT
So it turns out that this thing is Sukapon, and I'm going to tell you all about it.
This is a very odd looking character… why the heck is it even in smash bros?
Well I'll tell you why, in fact this character probably should have been in Smash as an assist
trophy since assist trophies were invented!
Meaning since Brawl!
And why is that?
Well because without Sukapon's game, we might not even HAVE a smash bros.
So lets get to explaining.
This odd looking character may remind you of the iconic character Rayman with the floating
limbs, or Kirby with his round pink body, but the thing they have most in common with
Sukapon is that they are all fighting… punch machines.
In this case literally;
Sukapon is a robot created by Dr. Emon and Dr. Walnuts in the famicom smash hit "Joy
Mecha Fight".
And I say smash hit only as a means to make a bad joke… because smash bros… it didnt
sell very well actually….
But that's not a surprise, it was Released in 1993 on the Famicom only in Japan.
The SUPER famicom released 3 years earlier, what was Nintendo doing???
Anyway, Sukapon takes the main role in Joy Mecha Fight to defeat the waves of military
robots created by Dr. Walnuts after his sudden declaration to take over the world.
Sukapon takes on his foes in one on one combat in a three stock AND health based fight.
With limbs that can extend and an arsenal of basic and special attacks do you see where
this is going?...
well, Sukapon is quite the foe to behold.
Sukapon is capable of blocking and mixing up his attacks with jump kicks or low sweeps,
a quick rolling attack, and a powerful throw.
With these skills, Sukapon saves the day and then joins a party of 36 playable robots;
most of which have there own unique special attacks.
Giving Joy Mecha Fight the largest roster of characters until King of Fighters 98' released
5 years later.
So, why did Nintendo make a fighting game?
Well, in response to the mass popularity of Capcom's Street Fighter II of course.
The popularity for 2D fighting games was growing and Nintendo wanted to bring the best 2D fighting
experience they could home to the Famicom, resulting in Joy Mecha Fight.
Which was very technical for the time.
And many of those new technicalities would go on to inspire many other elements in other
fighting games, ESPECIALLY Super smash bros.
Stocks instead of just health, standard attacks that are similar across all characters and
special attacks unique to each character.
A massive roster.
The influence is clear, and at the time this was one of Nintendo's first foray into the
2D fighting game genre, but it wasn't THE first, but it certainly did critically and
commercially a lot better than their actual first attempt.
Nintendo previously made a game called Urban Champion for the NES in 1984.
Two players would face off in a city street with the goal to knock the other player into
a sewer manhole using light punches and heavy punches.
And this game play was inspired by the Game & Watch game, Boxing.
Either way though, Sukapon, the limbless pink robot is very deserving of a spot in smash
bros as an assist trophy.
It's a very important part of nintendo history.
Granted it is kinda silly… maybe even stupid looking….
But if you are laughing...Sukapon is doing the job he was originally created for.
After saving the world from domination, he went back to being an owarai robot…. or
a Japanese stand-up comedian….
Robot….
Man robots are just taking over all the jobs aren't they…
Well I hope you enjoyed this video, and until next time, please remember to never stop using
your Gnoggin.
