Hey everyone!
I'm Lizfaerie and today I'm going to show you how to make basic clothes for your crochet
dolls.
In this tutorial, I'll show you how to add sleeves to your doll's clothes.
First I'm going to show you how to make these looser style sleeves.
And later in the video, I'll show you how to make a more fitted style sleeve.
This pattern is really easy to customize to any size doll.
But I'll be making mine to fit these 2 different dolls, my realistic body doll, and my basic
doll.
Some other things you'll need for this tutorial are:
A crochet hook.
You can use any size you like, I'm going to use a size E (3.5 mm)
A pair of scissors A yarn needle to sew your sleeves to your
shirt You'll need some bobby pins or stitch markers
to keep track of your stitches And you'll need yarn.
You could really use any yarn to dress your doll, but I find a thinner yarn works better,
because it won't add too much bulk to your doll.
So I'll be using crochet thread.
If your doll is small enough, you could also use embroidery floss.
You'll also need a shirt to add the sleeves to.
Find a link to my doll shirt tutorials in the description below.
And you can find written instructions for these sleeves in my doll shirt patterns.
You can find those in my Ravelry store.
That link is also in the description below.
I'm going to begin with the loose-fitting sleeves, the ones that go with my basic loose-fitting
shirt pattern.
I'm going to create a foundation chain that's the same width I want for the cuffs.
For my sleeves, I'm going to begin by chaining 16.
So I'm going to make a slip knot.
Then chain 16.
Then I'm going to slip stitch into the first chain, to join the chain in a ring.
Next I'm going to chain 1, and that's going to count as the first stitch of this row,
worked into the first chain.
So now I'm going to single crochet into each chain of the row, starting with the 2nd chain.
Alright, I've finished with my first row of single crochet.
If you made your sleeve with extra wide cuffs, you should decrease two to six times per row,
with one to two rows of normal single crochet in between each row of decrease, until the
work is the same width as the upper arm of the doll.
I'm going to do 2 decreases per row of decrease, with 2 rows of single crochet in between each
row of decrease.
If you want the sleeves to bell out more, rather than getting more gradually narrow,
you should do fewer decreases per row, or do fewer rows of single crochet in between
rows of decrease.
But I'm going to single crochet for 2 rows.
And then, decrease 2 times for 1 row.
It doesn't really matter where the decreases are in the row, as long as they're not too
close together.
I'm just going to do 1 row of decrease, so that the sleeve will fit the doll more loosely.
But if you like, you can continue to decrease if you want them to be more narrow.
If you want to learn some ways to decrease, check out my increasing and decreasing tutorial
by clicking the link in the description below.
Now I'm going to continue to add rows of single crochet until I get to the right length for
the sleeve.
If you want to make a shirt with shorter sleeves, just create fewer rows of single crochet.
For the sleeves I'm making for this high neckline shirt, I'm just going to continue to single
crochet for 4 more rows to elongate the sleeve to arm's length.
And for the sleeves I'm making for this low neckline shirt, I'm going to single crochet
for 14 more rows to elongate the sleeves.
If your sleeve is wider or more narrow than the arm hole of the shirt you're using, increase
or decrease two to six times per row until the widths of both are about the same.
For this high neckline, loose-fitting shirt I made for my basic doll, I'm going to decrease
4 times for 1 row to narrow the top of the sleeve.
And when I'm finished with that row of decrease, I'm going to end the work by slip stitching
into the first stitch of the row.
And cut off a long tail of my yarn.
Which I'm going to use to sew the sleeve onto the arm hole.
But for this low neckline shirt I made for this other doll, I don't need to widen the
top of the sleeve.
So I'm just going to end the work here.
Then I'm going to repeat the same thing to create another sleeve for the other side.
And now my loose-fitting sleeves are done.
Next I'm going to show you how to make the fitted style sleeves, the ones that go with
my fitted shirt pattern.
First, create a foundation ch that's the width of the doll's forearm.
For my realistic doll, I'm going to chain 8; and for the basic doll, I'll chain 10.
Then, join the foundation chain into a ring with a slip stitch, the same way we did for
the other style of sleeve.
Next, chain 1 and single crochet into the 2nd chain, and into each of the remaining
chains, for the first row.
Then I'm going to continue to create rows of single crochet until I reach the length
of the doll's forearm.
I'm just going to measure the sleeve against my doll's arm.
For the sleeves I made for this low neckline shirt, I single crocheted for 6 more rows
to complete the forearm.
If the doll's arms are the same width for the entire arm, and doesn't widen for the
upper arm, you could just continue to add rows of single crochet until you reach the
full length of the arm.
For the sleeves I made for this high neckline shirt, since it's for a more basic doll, I
just added 10 more rows to elongate the sleeves to arm's length, and finished the sleeve with
a slip stitch.
Next I'm going to gradually increase to the width of the upper arm.
I'm going to do this in pretty much the same way I did the other sleeve, but instead of
decreasing, I'm going to increase.
So I'm going to do 1 increase for each row of increase, with 2 rows of normal single
crochet in between each.
If your doll has thicker arms, you could increase 2 or 3 or even 4 times per row instead.
Or to make the increase even more gradual, single crochet more than 2 rows in between
each row of increase.
Or, again like I did for the other doll, you could just do no increases or decreases, and
continue to add rows of single crochet, depending on the width of your doll's arms.
So for this doll, I increased 1 time for 1 row.
Then I did 2 rows of normal single crochet.
Then I increased 1 for another row.
And single crocheted for 2 more rows.
I'm going to continue repeating that pattern until the arm is the right width.
I started out with 8 stitches in my row.
So I'm going to go on increasing 1 per row of increase, with 2 more rows of single crochet
in between, until I have a total of 12 stitches in my row.
And then I'm going to add 2 more rows of single crochet, to make the arm a little longer.
So I did 4 total rows of increase, with 2 rows of single crochet in between each row,
and 2 more rows of single crochet after my last row of increase.
If you want, you could keep adding rows of single crochet to make the sleeves longer.
If the doll's upper arm is wider than the width of the shirt arm hole, increase two
to six times per row until the widths are about the same.
For the sleeves I made for my dolls, I didn't need to widen, narrow, or lengthen the sleeves
any more.
But I'm just going to end these sleeves here, the same way I did the other style of sleeves.
With a slip stitch in the first stitch of the row.
Cut off a long tail.
And use the tail to sew the sleeve to the arm hole of the shirt.
Then just repeat the same thing, to create another sleeve of the exact same size.
And now the fitted sleeves are done.
