Singapore is a very warm climate country.
Air conditioning is a necessity.
With air conditioning your cost is very, very high.
As with all energy consumption it is not very sustainable for the climate.
I think when it comes to tackling the frictions due to climate change three big parties have
to play a role: the government, corporations and individuals.
JTC is a government agency.
Our charter is to develop industry infrastructure.
As a country we have constraints from a land resource perspective as well as from manpower.
Our role then is to see how best we can optimize the use of these limited resources.
We were inspired by the operations that Microsoft has.
We decided to bring it to Singapore … J-Ops is an Internet of Things system that
seeks to leverage technology, harness it, gather all the building data, do some analysis
and ensure that our buildings are efficient in terms of performance.
As we developed the system we redefined the work processes.
And at the same time, we developed our people.
We upskilled them in technology and changed the way they work so they're more productive,
so that they're more efficient.
In 1995, I joined JTC.
Its been about 22 years.
When I joined JTC I joined as a lift technician.
Right now in J-OPs I'm overseeing these building management systems, which are connected to
our command center.
We're gathering all this information live.
It goes to the Microsoft Azure cloud system.
We can analyze this information, put it into a predictive model, and we can predict when
the next fault or the next break down will be.
Within this project we are able to achieve two key milestones.
First, is 15% in energy cost avoidance.
We also saw an improvement of 15% for productivity in our FM facility management processes and
work streams.
We have decided to scale up to 36 more buildings.
The world is changing very fast.
Such changes is anticipated and you have to keep on changing yourself in order to suit
and stay reliable.
I think as a government agency, we set the tone.
So we believe in environmental sustainability.
As a city we can show the rest of the world, we can role model how Singapore acts, that
will reflect what the city of the future could potentially look like.
