TECH TALK #11: Aiming for climate-neutral wastewater treatment - Duration: 3:24.

Did you know that in a water utility, the treatment of wastewater

is probably the largest energy consumer?

And especially the energy used for wastewater aeration?

My name is Mikkel Andersen, and I stand here at the Marselisborg Wastewater Treatment Plant in Denmark.

Like us, the biological process that removes wastewater pollutants needs oxygen to

do a perfect job.

Wastewater aeration is the process of adding air into the wastewater

to allow bio-degradation of the pollutants.

And it's an integral part of most wastewater treatments.

Reducing energy costs for aeration is therefore a key focus point for all water utilities.

Less aeration energy consumption also means a lower carbon – or CO2 – footprint.

However, lowering oxygen in the bioprocess tanks also has some unintended side effects

as this leads to increased greenhouse gas emission in the form of nitrous oxide.

Nitrous oxide is a very strong greenhouse gas with a global warming potential

300 times greater than CO2

Furthermore, the atmospheric concentration of nitrous oxide continues to grow due to

the increasing use of fertilisers and concentrated waste streams caused by urbanisation.

Studies have shown that nitrous oxide may account for up to 90% of the total carbon footprint

from a wast ewater treatment plant.

Therefore, nitrous oxide emission must be accounted for as part of the

total carbon footprint management.

This wastewater treatment plant is highly optimised, producing more

than 150% of the energy needed.

And all is renewable energy.

This also means that the carbon footprint is almost entirely comprised of nitrous oxide emissions.

So we go beyond the energy footprint and aim for total climate neutrality.

To decrease the climate impact of Marselisborg even further, we have combined a unique nitrous

oxide sensor technology with online data from the wastewater treatment plant

into a control system.

As a result of our research, we are now able to account for

the bioprocess greenhouse gas emission in real-time.

And we aim to save the energy cost savings on one side -

and the nitrous oxide production on the other.

Also, we have shown in pilot scale that by managing the waste carbon resources differently,

we can control and minimise the nitrous oxide emission by more than 30%.

This will lead to energy savings as well as a documented positive environmental impact.

There's a great potential to improve your treatment processes and to optimise your operations

in a climate neutral approach.

By managing and balancing the different waste streams, we are able to achieve an energy

efficient and climate neutral wastewater treatment that can also fulfil

the future environmental regulations.

area where the slime was and they have this new volcano putty and there's

different styles there's six different styles and this one's the mountain Fuji

Japan this is mountain it is really famous volcanoes

slime again I really like to these are keeps fun I

can't learn squish them in the bag and these again they have the Jupiter

science which is riding sideways oh let's I want to so there is separate

this is amazing putty glow-in-the-dark and I think oh there's different ones

let's do it all of the different ones yeah I don't know but this one's amazing

putty glow in the dark this one's amazing that relays are putty this one's

amazing color changing the putty collect them I want to see how many there are

stuff from slime orb like turbo tube and these things and things so yeah

that's all that's the line headquarters because they didn't have any species but

they did have some new slant so that's cool okay so odd Michaels we found this

squishy is finally and it's the exact same brand as the target squishes which is

super funny so they have cute little tiny ones they have like a cookie and

they have a I guess that's our muffin and they have a brownie

and a heart thing so that's really cool I like the cookie and they have a cute

little bear on a cupcake so let's get both of those we've had a lot of

slushies and different stuff with cheese and different stuff so I'm just going to

show you a haul of all the stuff that we got first day is from Target and we've

got this cute squishy so we're going to open it looks like

it's very little a stick and let's squish it it's very nice squishy and it

is very slow rising and I love it it's so dry because this happen

peanut butter and jelly so much then we have a cake we got like three two

different types of cakes or three different types because they have

different looking takes this one kind itself it has some really like that's

like chocolate cream at the bottom some just plain chocolate metal and at the

top is some pink icing with some chocolate chips and like whipped cream

talked about that's what that looks like it's very nice squishy it isn't a slow

rising of the sandwich but it's still very nice

next it's a cinnamon roll and it is super cute I love the texture it doesn't

smell like anything

cool it's very nice squishing the very slow rising and it's very realistic

and pretty so I like this is a pink background with blue like spots on it

and it doesn't smell like anything but it's very big and I wanted to squish it

not the squash is not the slow rise but it's still very nice it looks really

pretty alas hey there two cakes do ice cream

chocolates bottom some red cream as the middle and some peak at the top some red

strawberries on top and some whipped cream and so let's swoosh it is probably

the exact same smell like anything it kind of smells

like strawberries but very nice okay

in a different video but it's very cute and this restful five but this is super

super adorable so let's shoot it's super nice

I really like this one this one is probably my favorite so far it looks

like a stack cookie her pink and yellow chocolate chip it doesn't it kind of

smells like cookies but not that much so it's like ooh I like this one this one's

very nice and easy this goes beyond super small and it's fun to just like

have it going
