Waching daily Feb 20 2017

The first time I entered the area of Ganjuran Church

the first thing I saw was the setting of the building

it looks totally different

than any other church which I've seen so far.

I'm so amazed by the combination of strong Javanese looks and culture

without depriving its religious vibes.

What was the story behind the construction of Ganjuran Church?

At the first time, Ganjuran Church is similar with the other Catholic Churches in common.

The idea of Ganjuran Church

came from a couple of siblings, Julius and Joseph Schmutzer.

Both of them were businessman.

They established a sugar factory here

Both of them did not only have a strong belief in Catholic

but they also had a strong interest in Javanese Culture

Julius and Joseph had a strong desire

to develop Javanese Culture

and strengthen their belief in Catholic at once.

And then, to put it up in a concrete action

Julius and Joseph determined to build a church in a Javanese style

with all javanesse design and feature

But during that time, the idea was not allowed by the Central of Catholic Church in Vatican, Rome.

Only few things were allowed by Vatican

such as Statue of Hati Kudus Tuhan (Sacred Heart of Jesus) on that side

and an altar with its ornament. That's all.

I see.

So previously, there were only those two that were allowed?

Yes, in terms of the context of the architecture, this church is just the same as any other churches.

Then in 2006 when the earthquake occurred in Yogyakarta

the old building of Ganjuran Church collapsed

Catholics here had an eagerness to continue the legacy of Schmutzer

which was to build a church in a Javanese style

after they were aware about the openness of Catholic Church

as a result of The second Vatican's conference.

That was how the current Ganjuran Church was built.

Father,

Back to the story when the earthquake happened, was there any support from Yogyakarta government

in order to rebuild the Ganjuran Church?

Actually, there was no direct support from the local government

From the government side

when we asked for permission whether we should build Ganjuran Church like it used to be or not

as the old building of Ganjuran Church were a cultural heritage.

We could not rebuild or renovate it as we wish without permission

But then, government gave permission to rebuild it with a new concept

and the new building would be different than before

Catholics had planned to rebuild the church with certain concept

and Catholics only asked permission from the local government (Kraton Yogyakarta)

whether we were allowed or not to rebuild the Ganjuran Church with a new concept

because this one adopted the concept of one of the building in Kraton area

and Kraton of Yogyakarta finally gave Catholics that permission

The fund to rebuild the Church mostly donated as charity from Catholics

and also came from certain donors.

President Park Geun-hye's lawyers request final hearing to be postponed - Duration: 1:00.

President Park Geun-hye's lawyers have reportedly made a request to postpone the final hearing

of her impeachment trial, which is currently set for Friday.

Sources familiar with the matter say her lawyers submitted a written statement to the Constitutional

Court... asking the final hearing be held on March 2nd or 3rd... as they need more time

to prepare and to decide whether Park herself will attend.

Impeachment requires the approval of at least six of the court's nine justices.

But the court is already one justice short, and when another retires on March 13th, President

Park can be reinstated if just two of the remaining seven justices overturn the impeachment

motion -- a scenario that could happen if the final hearing is delayed.

The court is expected to give its decision on a possible postponement later today.

Iraqi forces advance towards IS-held western part of Mosul - Duration: 0:57.

U.S.-backed Iraqi forces have launched a large-scale offensive to dislodge Islamic State militants

from the western half of Mosul.

The battle is expected to be a bigger challenge as the area has older, narrower streets and

is still home to hundreds of thousands of civilians.

Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi announced plans for the offensive

on state television, stressing the government forces were moving to liberate people from

terrorism forever.

Statements from the armed forces joint command say Iraqi police units are leading a northward

charge on the Mosul districts that lie west of the Tigris river, aiming to capture Mosul

airport.

They reportedly captured several villages and a local power distribution station in

the first hours and killed several militants.

Trump to re-implement travel ban on nationals from seven Muslim-majority countries - Duration: 1:56.

Over in the United States...

The Trump Administration is working on a stricter and more streamlined order of immigration

ban on nationals from several Muslim-majority countries.

Lee Ji-won reports.

U.S. President Donald Trump is set to re-issue an executive order banning entry to the U.S.

of nationals from seven Muslim-majority countries as a means to "head off attacks by Islamist

militants",... as confirmed on Saturday by the U.S. Secretary for Homeland Security,

John Kelly, at the Munich Security Conference.

"The president is contemplating releasing a tighter, more streamlined version of the

first . And I will have the opportunity to work a rollout plan, in particular to make

sure that there's no one in a sense caught in the system of moving from overseas to our

airports, which is what happened on the first release."

The order is expected to be released as early as next week,... and is likely to keep last

month's order imposing a 3-month entry ban on residents from the predominantly Muslim

countries of Iraq, Syria, Iran, Sudan, Libya, Somalia and Yemen.

But, the new order is said to admit green card holders, who are permanent U.S. residents,

and travellers already on planes bound for America.

The initial order stirred protests around the world, drew criticism from international

leaders and wreaked havoc at airports across the U.S.

The new order is said to take into account the criticisms and problems of the last order

to minimize the legal hurdles.

The first one was blocked by a federal judge in the state of Washington a week after coming

into effect,... and two days later an appeal by the Justice Department was also rejected

by a federal appeals court.
