How Many People Would We Need To Colonize Another Earth? - Duration: 4:39.

If you were stranded on an desert island, on an exoplanet, hundreds of years away from

Earth - how many people would you need with you to survive?

Hey everyone, Emily here for DNews!

Elon Musk - founder of SpaceX - recently stated that he wants to put 1 million people on Mars

within a century.

He'd bring everyone there with about a thousand spaceships, each making multiple trips between

Earth and Mars.

If anything bad happened to threaten the existence of this colony, we could quickly replenish

the population with a new batch of humans sent from Earth.

This strategy works because it only takes a few months to reach Mars.

But what if we wanted to colonize a world beyond our solar system, hundreds of years

away?

How big of a spaceship would we need, and how many humans would we need to start with

to make colonization possible?

Take Proxima B as an example.

It's the closest planet we know about outside of our solar system.

It's rocky and similar in size to the Earth, and has the potential to support liquid water

on its surface.

The problem is, we can't just hop over there.

It's 4 light-years away.

With current technology, it could take us more than 20,000 years to get there.

That's about 800 generations of humans - making this type of journey fairly impossible.

Luckily, there are programs like the 100 Year Starship project and Stephen Hawking's Project

Starshot that are working to develop new propulsion technologies that could get us there much

sooner - possibly within a few hundred years.

Assuming they're successful, how many people would we need to start a colony?

A study published in Acta Astronautica suggests that you would need a starship filled with

at least 14,000 carefully screened people to end up with a stable population after a

multi-century interstellar journey.

Even more people - up to 44,000 would ideal.

You'd have to account for potential catastrophes like plague, asteroid strikes, or even war.

A few hundred years is a long time to be in one spaceship - a lot of things could happen!

In the study, the researchers used population genetics theory - modeling how the genetics

of a population changes over generations - and accounted for one catastrophe during a 5-generation

voyage.

Populations over 14,000 maintain good health during a trip of this length despite relatively

high inbreeding and reduced genetic diversity over time.

As a colony, we'd need to do everything we could to keep genetic diversity high - it's

something that plays an essential role in the adaptability and survival of a species.

Think about it - some humans would live out their entire life on this interstellar spacecraft.

As a child, you would grow up - have kids of your own with other passengers on board

- and eventually grow old and die.

But the only partners available to you would be the limited number of members on board

the spacecraft.

You'd have to be extremely careful when choosing your partner because inbreeding can

lead to some serious problems.

Just take a look at our early ancestors.

For thousands of years, Neanderthals, our ancient cousins, lived in small, isolated

populations, which lead to inbreeding.

By studying their fossils, researchers have discovered a range of deformities - many of

which are rare in modern humans.

An even larger issue with small populations may be the community's ability to formulate

their own culture, acquire knowledge and develop technology.

The combination of these issues could lead to the downfall of a species altogether.

We could have the same problems in a starship.

Maintaining a large population with sufficient genetic diversity is key to a successful,

sustainable colonization of a new world.

Of course, a population of 14,000 is still a lot of people, especially when you consider

the fact that the highest number of people we've ever brought into space at once is

eight.

In order to meet that 14,000-human minimum requirement - we're going to need a bigger

ship.

Or.. many medium-sized ships.

Distributing your population across multiple ships would also distribute the risk of losing

that population entirely.

And then maybe, you'd be able to distribute the human species to another solar system.

But of course, all of this assumes that humans can invent a propulsion system that's 100

to 1,000 times faster than anything we have today.

So perhaps, we should stick to the planets in our own backyard for now.

Want to learn more about Proxima B?

Check out this video here.

What do you think?

Would you want to be part of that 14,000?

The Best Touchscreen Winter Gloves - Duration: 1:50.

I'm Nick Guy. Over the past five winters

we've tested 47 pairs of gloves while

moving half a ton of stumps, climbing on ice,

and just walking and biking around town

using our phones.

Here are our picks for the best

touchscreen gloves.

Moshi's Digits are our favorite

touchscreen gloves for the

second year in a row.

These knit gloves aren't the absolute warmest

touchscreen gloves you can buy.

But they're warmer than anything that's better

for using on touchscreens and better for

using on touchscreens than anything

that's warmer. Got it?

Anyways, these double-layered

knit gloves will keep you

reasonably warm in cold weather, but

they're fit snug enough to conform to a

range of finger sizes and to allow

reliably accurate screen taps.

The stretchy design means they'll fit

tightly on the hand, ensuring a good

fit and solid touchscreen control.

They're also dexterous and grippy enough

that in our testing we felt comfortable

using our phones one-handed.

If you live in a colder climate or take part in

winter sports, go with the 180s Sustained

Insulated Gloves. They're a heavy-duty

option that will keep your hands safe

from the elements.

In fact, they're warmer than

any other glove we tested.

The insulation makes the fingers a bit

bulkier so these gloves are not the best

for detail tasks, they're better for say

checking a bus schedule than typing

emails.

Glider Gloves Urban Style touchscreen

gloves are good pick in warmer climates.

These gloves are quite thin, meaning

they don't provide as much warmth as the

competition. But it also means there's not

as much material between your hands and

your screen allowing for more precise

input.

if you're willing to pay more for a

more stylish glove, we recommend the

Leather & Tech Stretch Glove line

from U|R Powered, available in both

men's and women's designs.

These gloves are leather on the

outside but have a stretchy palm

that provides grip and a better fit.

For a premium pair, consider Kent Wang's

Deerskin Gloves, which are all leather.

They look great and work well with

touchscreens, but are very expensive.

Vern Cotter on his team selection for Ireland - Duration: 5:11.

Vern 6 Nations time, Ireland come to visit it really can't get much better than that

you must be looking forward to it.

It's a big game all the 6 Nations games are important and we will certainly kick off with

one of the form teams at the moment if you look at what they did in November.

If you look at our record in the last two outings hasn't been particularly good against

them and we understand it will be difficult but at the same time there is a lot of excitement

in the group to get out there and kick the 6 Nations off with a home game at BT Murrayfield

so there has been a few nerves during the week and the players have put together a reasonable

plan to take these guys on.

One of the things when you are looking at tries that Scotland have scored is to expect

the unexpected with Scotland at times is that something that pleases you.

Yes they can play the structure but also they look to take the opportunity when they can.

I think they understand the qualities that are within the group and if they do simple

things well then it will open up opportunities and whether it's looking at the paddock and

seeing space and playing to that space and being powerful in a carry and using footwork.

Those are the sort of things that the players have been working on and they are getting

better and better at creating opportunities and shutting down the oppositions opportunities

as well I think defensively there has been some good work done also so it's nice to put

in a full performance in.

Have we done that?

Probably we are still waiting for that game when everything clicks and we nail it so it's

a good opportunity to try and put our best performance to date and I think thats what

the players are focusing on.

In terms of some of the combinations, the mix of that how happy are you?

Ryan has been in great form and the Josh and Hamish you know it's mobile but it's quite

abrasive aswell.

Yeah we have gone for Josh's carry, he is going to dent the opposition and get them

going backwards and it's difficult to stop Josh as we know.

Ryan very athletic and good link player and good at the line out and the line out defence

will be important and Hamish, has come on and it's really exciting for Hamish to kick

on from the November series which was certainly satisfactory for him and then go on to what

is going to be a little bit more gnarly in the 6 nations.

In terms of the front row you've got someone like Zander, under 20s last year and now he

is getting more caps under his belt and how does that experience help a player like Zander

develop.

Yeah the experience is good it's so important to make a decision then follow up through

the process to become better and it's always that asking questions of yourself and not

be satisfied and Zander is at the start of his international career and we're happy and

he'd be happy with what he did in November but it just gets tougher and people have had

a look at him now and he's not the new kid on the block he's been out there he's had

test match footy but he is going to find more resources and develop his game but he's got

good people around him and his club form has been good and he's there with Fraser, he's

been coming on and we have experience on the bench which will help us Fordys in there with

John Barclay you know hopefully the balance we can maintain pressure start to finish.

Simon Berghan get's his first cap if he comes on there is great anticipation to get this

game started with a little bit of nervousness which I think is a good thing and combine

that with a good dose of energy fuelled by the crowd and local support should get us

going.

One final question, those strike runners thinking about Stuarts try against Ireland last year

as well and Shawn how important is it to get those guys into a bit of space so those guys

can attack?

i think it's really important and Ireland will be wary of them and we know that they

will have done a good job defensively to try shut us down so it means, Huw Jones gets an

opportunity perhaps he finds some space they won't look at him so much.

Sean Maitland he me be able to surprise them, Alex Dunbar has developed things to his game

and it might be a kick in behind that gives them something unexpected and that they weren't

looking at and you know that's where the game will break open just by being able to do something

and that's why we develop skill sets to give you more options and don't become one dimensional

these players are working hard to try and do that.

It's a good test we have to think on our feet.

Tools for Transformation - Launching a Learning Adventure - Duration: 2:33.

I love coming in to work every morning because in Grade 1 everything is new, and it's exciting,

and the students are excited to be here and excited to learn. These students come in and

they don't have a lot of prior knowledge and so everything is really novel. And I love

watching how much they learn in just a short year.

I'm Breanne Davidson, I teach Grade 1 at Master's Academy in Calgary, Alberta.

In a traditional classroom teachers might just tell the students what information the

teacher is going to give them but in a Profound Learning classroom we try and engage students

by getting them curious and instead of telling them what I am going to tell them - telling

them what they are going to discover for themselves.

Part of what the students need to learn in Grade 1 is how to count to 100 in a variety

of ways, so counting by 1's, 2's, 5's, then 10's.

We think it's important to have a Driving Question for every Learning Adventure because

it helps to connect the learning always back to that Driving Question and it really gives

the students a focus. And so our Driving Question for this Adventure is "How many ways can I

count to 100?"

To launch that as a Learning Adventure they came in to the classroom one day and on each

of their desks they found a ziplock baggie just full of materials. So some had crayons,

some had beads, some had goldfish crackers, and on each baggie was a sticky note that

said "Count Me!"

And at first they said "Well, 'Count Me!' what does that mean? What am I supposed to

do?" A few of them said "Well I guess we're supposed to count these things."

And so there they went and they all had everything pulled out, and spread out, and they were

counting, and they were working together. Some kids were putting things back in the

ziplock baggie as they counted and others were taking them out as they counted.

And then in the end they realized that they all had 100 items in their baggies. It was pretty

exciting. Even one of the students said "Well I can't believe there's 100 in both because

these crayons are so much bigger than these beads and I really thought I had more crayons."

Launching a Learning Adventure is always so exciting. It's so much fun to watch the students

anticipating their learning and getting ready for it, and being engaged, motivated, and

excited right off the bat.

As a teacher I think the "ah ha" moments come in wanting to just tell the students, or wanting

to help them and get them going. But if you can hold yourself back and stand back and

just watch it's amazing what they'll come up with on their own and how they'll work

together and they'll solve the problem in ways that you hadn't really anticipated. It's

fun as a teacher just to watch your students so engaged and on tasks and motivated to learn.

WEBS Search for Vendors - Duration: 3:09.

The purpose of this video is to show you how to use the vendor search tool.

The vendor search tool can be used to locate vendors to partner and or subcontract with.

First you will need to click on "search for other businesses" of log in to WEBS with your

email address and password.

Once logged in, located on the navigation bar, click search vendors.

There are several ways to search for vendors: specific vendor name, city, state or zip code.

This will return vendors with that specific vendor name, city, state or zip code the vendor

originally register for.

Then scroll to the bottom of the page and click search.

This search method is best used when you are searching for a specific vendor.

Another way to search for vendors is by commodity code.

To select the codes you are looking for, you can search by: keyword, code or category.

Type in the keyword code or category and select search commodity codes.

You can check codes individually or select all by checking the box.

(Note: when searching codes and key words, simply use a comma to search multiple words

or codes) Now, you can narrow your search down if you are looking for vendors that are

certified minority and/or women owned, small business and/or veteran owned.

You can select all diversity types.

This will provide only vendors of a diversity type.

If you want all diverse and non-diverse vendors, leave the box unchecked.

You can select one of the diverse types by checking the boxes that best match your needs.

Lastly, you are able to select the county the vendor needs to be able to service in.

You can select all counties by clicking the individual boxes that fit your need then click

search.

The information appears in a table with a summary of the records at the top.

The table includes: company names, their doing business as name or DBA, email address, city,

state, web address, their diversity status and phone number.

To export this information to excel, click "export".

The document will appear.
