Hi there, Vladimir here with another video on how not to learn English
Today I'd like to talk about Speed Learning スピードラーニング
Is スピードラーニング Speed Learning good for learning English
As you can tell by the title of this video "the problem with speed learning" スピードラーニングの問題
I'm not a big fan of Speed Learning スピードラーニング
For those living outside of Japan, Speed Learning スピードラーニング is the name of
a set of 48 CDs covering a wide range of topics
Google translate still sucks
スピードラーニングの問題では何でしょう What is the problem with Speed learning?
In my opinion. problem with speed learning スピードラーニングの問題
is in the name. It's misleading 人を惑わす広告
There is nothing Speedy about it and
it doesn't really constitute Learning in the official meaning of this word
早いでもないしラーニングでもない
Let's look at the Speed part first and Learning part second
According to their own commercial it took Ryo Ishikawa 石川遼 6 years to learn English
There is nothing speedy about 6 years
It took me 1 year, about 900 hours
and I'm sure Ryo 遼 had started from a much higher language base
Japanese start learning English from elementary school
I started learning English in earnest at 27 years of age
It took a guy whose job involves constant traveling 6 years to learn English
That's not what I call speedy
And no surprise there
Every language has 4 language skills reading, listening, writing, speaking
Speed Learning スピードラーニング is only about one of those skills so it should be called
a quarter learning
in all fairness you can learn a language without practicing your writing
I think the official name of this product should be: 6 years, 1/3 learning
much more accurate, not as catchy though
It is true that listening is very important. They do talk about that on their website but
they don't tell the whole truth The half-truths are the worst
Children do start with listening but their listening is not passive
they don't listen to tapes, they listen to real people 9-10 hours a day
Professor Patricia Kuhl in her TED presentation
talks about the difference between listening to a human being and listening to a tape
what you see here is the audio result — no learning whatsoever
and the video result — no learning whatsoever
It takes a human being for babies to take their statistics
Yet another problem with these audio CDs is the same problem I had with
the million dollar teachers in Korea there is too much translation
50% of Speed learning スピードラーニング CDs are in Japanese
And that's one of their main selling points
Don't worry, if you don't understand there is Japanese translation right after the English
There is no need for a dictionary
What? That's not how people learn Dictionaries are the most important study tool
looking up words in a dictionary is how we learn
and not just any dictionary
You need to use monolingual dictionaries, English English dictionaries
There is too much translation going in Japan and Korea, everything is being translated, spood-fed
No wonder Japanese and Korean people struggle with English
That's not how we learn, that's not how the brain retains and recalls information
We don't learn a language by simply listening to tapes or watching subtitled movies
You need to pick up a dictionary, put pen to paper, be active, make an effort
Listening is very important and
speed learning スピードラーニング is certainly better than doing nothing
however I question its cost-efficiency, especially considering its hefty price tag
153,600 yen to 207,200 yen
quite expensive
and just to put things in perspective
my book is 499 yen, one coin
There are much more efficient options available online, efficient and free
I've devoted a whole chapter on listening and how to practice listening
Save yourself time and money, lots of money
and read my book Virtually Native which is available on Amazon and virtuallynative.com
