Waching daily Feb 17 2017

Welcome back to the Gentleman's Gazette!

Today, we discuss brands that are made specifically for men 5'8" and under, what to look for when

you buy classic clothing, as well as do's and don'ts for shorter men.

So why does this matter?

Basically, 1/3 of the male population is 5'8" or under but the clothing available on the

market is usually tailored for men that are taller and so the proportions are off and

it's not flattering to the silhouette of a shorter man.

if you buy something off the rack, you will always have to tailor it; that's true for

short men, regular men, and tall men.

However, if you are taller or regular, sometimes all you need is to have a dart opened and

something tightened whereas if you are shorter and the jacket is too long, you can't just

cut it off at the bottom because otherwise, the positioning of the pockets are off and

it just looks weird.

So how do we define a shorter men?

Basically, it's about 5'8" to 5'1", or 5', or a 173 cm to 153.

Sometimes people suggest to start with a kids clothing department of brands like Brooks

Brothers because they have an extensive one and they're very classic.

The problem is, it's designed for kids and not for men and so the size is very different

and it's usually off and it's either too big, or too short, or something is off, so it's

not recommended to do that.

Also you have to consider that kids usually grow very quickly and they grow out of things

so you won't find the best materials in that range.

Since you are a grown man, you also don't want to look like a teenage boy anyways.

Therefore, we suggest to go with clothes that were specifically designed for shorter men

because they take into consideration the proper proportions, the right length, and anything

else that you need to look dapper.

A relatively new brand that't affordable and specifically tailored to men 5'8" or under

is Silas Jackson.

They have shirts starting at $30 and while the quality is not the highest, the fit will

be much better than other off the rack brands because they're designed with you in mind.

A contender that has been around for a little longer which is also more expensive is Peter

Manning.

They were one of the first companies that specifically focused on men 5'8" or under

and their jackets are specifically tailored for you.

That means, off the rack, the jacket has shorter sleeves, the collar is altered, the sleeves

are slimmer, and everything is made so it fits you well.

Their pants also have a lower rise so it's more proportional for your body and the inseams

are between 26 and 30 inches which you can see, is specifically made for shorter men.

On top of that, they also taper the leg, so it's slimmer and more flattering for shorter

gentlemen.

Another brand to look into is Jimmy Au's from Beverly Hills.

It originally started as a custom tailor and evolved into something that's specifically

focused on shorter men.

If you are specifically interested in shirts, check out Ash and Anvil which offer a good

selection for shorter men in a moderate price range.

One thing that we noticed at Fort Belvedere is that ties are usually made for guys of

regular height, or big and tall guys.Well, if you get a tie in a regular length and you

tie it with a small four in hand knot, the tie will always be too long, extend beyond

your waistband that makes you look like Donald Trump.

The only option to make the tie shorter is to use a bigger tie knot, that means you have

to go with a half Windsor or a full Windsor and automatically, your knot gets much bigger.

Generally, shorter men have also a smaller head so all of a sudden, the tie knot is not

proportional anymore and way too big for your head therefore, we decided to design ties

specifically for men that are 5'8" or under that are slimmer in the body, that are shorter,

so you can tie a tie knot that pleases your face and you don't have something that extends

way beyond your waistband.

Most stores out there have a very limited selection of short ties, if they offer them

at all.

We decided to offer all of our ties in the short length so you can really choose and

get something that flatters you and something that you like.

Please take a look here for our short ties selection.

But that's not all, Fort Belvedere also offers gloves for men with small hands.

They are made of quality leathers such as peccary, lamb nappa, and lamb suede, and you

can see the selection, number of colors that are versatile, here.

If you are sick and tired of socks that are too big and slide down, take a look at this

selection here which is available in small, made for men with small feet, nevertheless

they stay up and don't bunch up in your shoes.

Whenever you buy something, it is really crucial that you look at the length.

If something is too long and it will rarely be ever too short, but if it's too long, stay

clear of it because you cannot really alter it so it flatters you.

The only exception is that you can hem pants but if you hem it too much, the rise may be

too much and maybe cut too wide.

Ideally, you want to find something that's as close to your body measurements as possible.

One of the trickiest parts to alter is the shoulder.

If the shoulders extend past your natural shoulder by more than a quarter inch, I'd

stay clear of them because alterations cost would be really high and usually the garment

does not look very neat afterwards.

In terms of sleeves, you want to make sure that you have a high armhole so you have a

great range of movement.

You want to have trimmed sleeves but not too slim because otherwise, your range of movement

is limited.

You also want to make sure that your sleeves aren't too wide.

To learn more about the topic, please check out our sleeve length guide video here.

In terms of colors, there's basically no limit.

If you are in a business environment, it's best to go with dark colors, and also evolve

into browns and greens but when it comes to patterns, you want to stay clear of huge patterns

because they make you look small and short and you want to avoid that.

So rather than a bold stripe that is spaced with 2 inches, go for something that's spaced

at half an inch.

If you want to go with a check such as a Prince of Wales check, or another check, make sure

to get it small because it will make you look taller than you are.

Overall, small patterns are your friend because they emphasize your height.

When it comes to accessories, it's probably best to keep it simple and clean because as

a short man, you always want to stand out by looking dapper.

If you have a bold tie in pink and green, it just can look garish and it's not very

sophisticated anymore.

So I suggest to start out go with ties that are easy to combine and versatile and classic.

To learn more, please check out our 12 essential ties every man should have.

in terms of alterations, always be prepared to pay for them and make sure to have enough

money left over so you can afford proper alterations.

Alternatively, you can go with made to measure clothing because then, it's designed for you

from the get go however, there may be limitations because made to measure patterns are stock

patterns that are modified and scaled altogether.

To learn more about that, please check out our video, the difference between ready to

wear, bespoke, and made to measure.

Sometimes you may have the option to get a separate jacket size and a separate pant size,

that may really help if your body is not proportional.

Of course, holy grail is bespoke but it's quite expensive though if you can afford it

and you're a shorter man, it's definitely the way to go.

Sometimes, made to measure can be less expensive than off the rack plus alterations so consider

that an option.

If it's particularly important to you, I suggest you know your own measurements, you know whether

one shoulder is more sloped than the other, and the everything that can help you to achieve

the perfect fit.

Most people never do that but it's very important that you measure both of your arms and both

of your legs because most people just have a slightly different length and it's slightly

off and if you get the same measurement for either sleeve or pant leg, the fit will be

off.

My right arm is definitely a little shorter than my left one.

If you go with a made to measure outfit, especially online made to measure, make sure to send

them pictures of your posture, from all angles, front, back, side, half side, half back, that

way, they can get a much better idea of what you look like and how they have to compensate

for it when they make your garment.

Last but not the least, let's talk about short men's classic clothing do's and don'ts.

Don't see being short as a disadvantage in life, many great and famous men were short.

Winston Churchill, Pablo Picasso, Humphrey Bogart, Martin Luther King Jr., they were

all confident, they were all well dressed and they made an impact in life.

For modern day men, look at Aaron Marino from AlphaM, or Brock McGoff from the Modest Man,

they've had a huge impact on men around the world with their confidence and with their

style, and they keep helping them and their height does not matter at all.

Rule number 1: Do focus on fit. It's the most important element and even if you're shorter

and you're well dressed, you'll always stand out more than a tall guy or a regular guy

who's a slob.

Don't wear bold patterns because they make you look smaller and they're not flattering.

Instead, do wear streamlined outfits that elongate their height.

That also means that you want a proportional length of your jacket so the back of your

collar to the end of your jacket should be the same distance as the bottom of your jacket

to the hem of your trousers.

Don't wear horizontal stripes because they make you look wider than you are and when

you are a shorter guy, you don't want to look short and fat.

Instead, do wear slim vertical stripes with the spacing of up to a quarter inch, maybe

half an inch at the most but it will help you to look tall from the vertical lines and

also because of the spacing because it's closer together.

Don't wear large accessories such as super wide ties, big tie knots, huge watches, or

necklaces, and earrings that are just too big and bold because otherwise, they make

you look smaller and it's just an unfavorable look.

Instead, wear watches that are slimmed down, don't extend past your wrist, and for a good

selection, please check out this guide here.

Don't wear really bold shoes or elevator shoes because generally, they're not very versatile

especially with elevator shoes, the quality is usually not on par with other quality men's

shoes.

To learn more about shoes, please check out our shoe videos here.

if you want the little extra height, do wear classic regular shoes and add a little heel

lift that gives you some extra height.

last but not the least, when you wear something, do wear it with confidence.

It's very important, it doesn't impact on how you are perceived and if you wear a well

fitting suit, you'll always look much better.

Tips for Applying to Public Art Grants - Duration: 6:34.

[beats]

Hi, I'm Elisheba Johnson

and I'm a Public Art Project Manager

at the Seattle Office of Arts & Culture.

Read the call.

So, if the call says that they want something site-integrated

and then you say that you're a muralist?

Probably not the right call for you.

Hi, I'm Jason Huff. I'm a Public Art Project Manager

with the Office of Arts & Culture.

Don't hesitate to email or call the Project Manager.

There are a lot of tips and a lot of helpful information

that you can get from the Project Manager.

Feel free to call, we're always ready to help.

My name is Deborah Paine and I'm the Curator and Collections Manager

for the Office of Arts & Culture.

Beef up that résumé.

Make sure you have a few exhibitions out there.

You can have an exhibition at a cafe,

you can have an exhibition at a hair salon,

you can have an exhibition at a clinic, some place like that.

But beef up your résumé so it looks like you've actually done some installations

and make sure you have gotten your work out there in the past.

Hi, I'm Sandy Esene and I'm the Registrar for the Public Art team.

Have a mentor, friend, colleague, artist,

anybody that you trust,

to look over your work to make sure

what is in your mind is actually on the page.

So that the panelists can understand

what you're trying to communicate.

Hi, I'm Blake Haygood, Assistant Curator for the Public Art Collection.

Always start with a really strong image,

and then always finish with a really strong image.

You can do the subtle stuff in between.

Hi, my name is Maija McKnight

and I am a Public Art Manager for the Seattle Office of Arts & Culture.

Do apply again.

If you weren't selected, don't despair.

There's lots of different projects that the Office of Arts & Culture offers.

And, while you weren't selected for one,

that doesn't mean you won't be selected for the other.

Each project has its own unique set of circumstances

and unique needs,

and your art work just might be the right one for the next one.

Think about your images carefully.

This is your introduction to a selection panel.

This is a time when they're going to see

if you are a good fit for this project.

Even if you have to use fewer images than it calls for,

always use the best images.

If you're not at all sure about the image, don't use it.

Because if this is like a blind date with your panel,

you only have 2 seconds per slide

to show them who you are.

That initial impression of your application is really important.

I think the images that you submit are probably

the most important part of your application.

Because keep in mind they're reading a lot of applications.

One example of this is to make sure

that your images are in the proper direction.

One image per slide.

When you start collaging multiple images within a slide,

it's very confusing, it's hard to read.

And it doesn't give a panel

a good impression of who you are.

If they're pixelated or the color is all off

we don't really know what we're seeing.

Make sure you don't take that photograph of your painting

in the backyard with the fence in the background, things like that.

Because that's not giving anybody a clear vision

of what you are doing as an artist.

[lounge music]

Hi, I'm Ruri Yampolsky.

I'm the Director of the Public Art program

for the Office of Arts & Culture for the City of Seattle.

We commission artists using a selection process

that we call the Peer Panel Process.

This means that we get together a group of people such as:

to be a part of a jury.

We also include community members, other stakeholders

such as project partners, designers of the project,

to be a part of this jury.

We as staff members actually only facilitate the process,

we are not involved in the selections themselves.

[lounge music continues]

Hi, I'm Marcia Iwasaki

I'm a Public Art Project Manager.

Typically, a panel is a 2-day process.

The 1st day, the panel meets together

and they are able to review 3 things by the artist applicant:

Their images, which are anywhere from 8-20 images

depending on the particular call.

At the end of the 1st day,

the panelists have come down to decide

on 3 or 4 finalists that they want to interview.

On day 2, the finalists come in.

They have roughly 45 min.

for their own personal interview.

The first 15 min. is a presentation

of any of the art work that they'd like to show.

The second 15 min. is spent answering questions

that are provided to the finalists ahead of time.

And the third 15 min. has to do with

a more informal conversation about the project itself.

[lounge music continues]

Hi! I'm Kristen Ramirez

and I'm part of the Public Art team.

Before the interview,

definitely make time to visit the site

and understand the conditions of the site:

who lives there,

who plays there

what is it like in and around that site?

It'll make you feel differently about what art

you might propose to live there.

If you've been invited to come interview,

and you're out of town?

If you're able to come in person, I do think

it makes a difference to be there in person.

You'll be given those interview questions ahead of time.

And occasionally,

there's a tendency to want to take those

and create your own presentation with them.

But the panelists are excited and eager to meet you.

And I think it's better

to let them ask those questions of you.

Hi, I'm Tiffany Hedrick

Conservator for the City of Seattle Public Art Collection.

A lot of times, suppliers are willing to provide free samples,

which gives you an opportunity to

test samples on materials you're going to be working with,

and their interactions with other materials.

Do apply early.

Don't procrastinate.

Please, do not wait until the last minute

to submit your application.

Don't, I can't say it enough times,

wait till the last minute.

Because, your house is gonna be on fire,

your internet's gonna go out,

your kid's not gonna be sleeping.

And you know what?

You're not gonna apply for that really awesome project

because everything went haywire.

My final tip is to

encourage all of you to keep applying.

Even the most established artists

have a pile of rejection letters before they ever get one.

It's career changing.

So please don't give up!

Keep trying as much as you can.

And it will change your life.

*Car skidding*

Uh.... lets get the lights

*Pure swag*

Swag Dude: Hey little billy.

Why you so confused?

Little Billy: I can't decide which pharaoh is the best in ancient Egypt.

Swag Dude: Man, that's easy! This song might help you a little bit.

Ramses the second was a very great man, he ruled ancient Egypt and not Japan.

He ruled from 1290 to 1224 B.C.E.!

*Ugggg. Its painful*

Little Billy: I get it now! Let me sing!

He had great military leaderships,

building monuments, and his great temple complex.

*Very, very bad dabs*

1st Half of 2017 Goals Category: Physical RRRH - Duration: 6:37.

Alright, I got the ball rolling talking about

resolutions and goals and I've got a lot

for this first part of the year so I'm

gonna start sharing those with you

in fact have so many other break them up

into different categories for you

I'm going to talk about my physical goals here

you know it's been part of my whole deal

that I want to start to look more like a hero

because... I just don't right now

that's always been a part of this project that I'm doing

and I don't see that changing anytime soon

hopefully I'm not always going to be focused on weight loss

because there's a lot of other physical things

that I would like to get to

Now, I'm going to start listing on my goals in order

I think they can actually be achieved

It is time for me to take my medicine in

the form of punishments

before I disappeared this last time I said that

I was going to work out and ramp it up

and if i didn't achieve that?

I was gonna let you guys punish me

obviously I didn't acheive my goal

and I stopped doing the w orkouts

and... ... That means I get punished

To be honest this was one of the reasons why

I was hesitant to come back

because ... ... I didn't really want to do this

but apromise is a promise and I keep my word

so I'm gonna let you punish me

type your punishment ideas in the doobly-doo

and we'll see what we can come up with

and hopefully it'll be entertaining

Run a 5k

It may not be obvious to everyone

but i don't exactly have

what's known as a "runner's body"

and that's because I don't run

and i'm going to change that

I want to start running, get in shape,

and actually running in a 5k race

In an organized 5k event

I'm putting this in the more likely to get done side of the

category because I... will... just... accomplish it

through sheer willpower

I will make it happen

I just need to find an event

and do it... It's gonna happen

I may not perform well but I will make it happen

I really want to increase my flexibility

It may seem counter intuitive

but I used to be able to do the splits

that if that's the alternating splits not the sideways splits

I could never do those

but I haven't been stretching out

I've lost flexibility I want to get back to where I was

I really would like to get back to where I was

It felt good... It felt like a big accomplishment

to be able to the splits especially when you know you're a big guy

It's not something people expect see... expect you to do

it was a really cool thing

not only have a lot of flexibility in my lower body

I have lost my flexiblity in my upper body too

I can't scratch all the places in my own back

that I used to be able to scratch

and that's really getting frustrating

so with the combination of yoga and some gymnastic exercises

I'm gonna increase my flexibility

I may not get back to where I was right away

Probably won't get back to where I was right away

but I'm gonna increase my flexibility

and hopefully get back to where I was

maybe even better? maybe I'll do the sideways slpits

who knows?

we'll see

Being less than eighteen percent body fat

Now this is the gold standard goal here

It's the goal I've been trying to achieve

since I started this whole project

and I haven't accomplished yet

so I'm still striving towards it

It is where I need to be body fat percentage wise

to be considered "fit"

not morbidly obese like I am

or obese? ... or average? ... to be "fit"

someday I'll probably get tired with that

and want to move past that to a athlete level

l but right now "Fitness" is the goal

I've taken new measurements

and established a new baseline

and I've established some new protocols

as to how I'm going to go about losing the fat

Step one I've started on a specific diet

it's informally known as the slow carb diet

step two is fasting

at least intermittent fasting

where I limit the amount of time

that i'm actually eating per day

to under nine hours

this means that if the first thing I eat

during the day is at noon

I will not eat anything past nine o'clock

if the first thing I eat is at eleven? eight o'clock etc etc

now still trying to eat enough calories

so that my body doesn't go into starvation mode

I'm just limiting the window

that I am actually doing eating part

which hopefully get my body used to burning fat for fuel

instead of just trying to use sugar

and the carbs that I do end up eating

I'm also trying to stay in ketosis

which is that state where your body burns fat for fuel

rather than sugar or carbs that type of thing

I'm just trying to burn fat for fuel

which means i am taking it more fat

but it's ... it's going to be a wash in the end really

and I'm going to be exercising

like I said I was going to do yoga

and some gymnastics training for flexibility

I'm also going to be doing bodyweight exercises

and kettlebell exercises

and maybe I'll get some more weights

do some ... ... real freaky stuff

I don't know yet

depends on how fast or how slow this works for me

hopefully I'm soon going to be in that fitness category

and we can move on to something else more interesting

other than me measuring myself all the time

Do a handstand

now I've stood on my head before

but I've never done a handstand

at least not that I can remember

so this is my stretch goal

to do something that ... ... I've never done before

at least not to my knowledge

maybe I've accomplished it before and I just forgot

but I can't actually remember

ever accomplishing a handstand

It's not something I have ever done before

that's gonna be my stretch goal

to do something that I have yet to actually accomplish

hopefully I'm gonna be moving on

to more interesting, more exciting, stretch goals

but i'm sure some of those are going to require me

to put forth the... "dollar dollar" bills

and right now don't have that budget

and that's all i have right now for my physical goals

I have more categories coming

Stick with me rebels! ... We can do this!
