27-INTRO
Fighting the flu. It's an issue
we have been reporting on for
weeks. And the illness is not
just affecting the state
of Ohio.
Take a look at this map from the
Centers for Disease Control.
You see that brown color...That
is where the C-D-C is seeing
widespread flu activity.
Almost the entire country. 27
First News Senior Reporter Gerry
Ricciutti talked to a doctor who
has one important piece of
advice for families
when it comes to staying
healthy.
[C23]20170214 FIGHTING FLU 27-PK
:10 As the annual flu season is
just now
starting to peak..local doctors
say they're likely to continue
seeing patients with
the virus for another six weeks
or so... WHEN YOU GET THE FLU
SHOT..IT
TAKES ABOUT TEN TO FOURTEEN DAYS
TO BECOME FULLY INNOCULATED..SO
YOU CAN STILL BE COVERED AT THE
TAIL END OF THIS.
Doctors like Denise Bobovnyik
are still urging patients to get
the vaccine..even
though health experts admit
between a third and half of
those getting a flu shot will
see no benefit from it.. BUT YOU
DON'T KNOW HOW
MUCH..YOU DON'T KNOW WHO..ITS
THE BEST..ITS THE BEST WE HAVE
AT
THIS POINT. The Ohio Department
of Health says at least
two thousand people have been
hospitalized because of the flu
this year --
with four pediatric deaths in
the state being blamed on the
virus -- two of them
from Salem and East
Liverpool...Doctor Bobovnyik
tells me while many child flu
deaths each year involve some
other medical or neurological
condition..more than 40-percent
of the victims were healthy
before they came
down with the virus... ITS NOT
THE PARENTS'
FAULT..ITS NOT THE DOCTORS'
FAULT..ITS NOT THAT YOU DIDN'T
GET 'EM VACCINATED..OR YOU DID
GET 'EM VACCINATED..SOME
TIMES YOU JUST CAN'T EXPLAIN.
The doctor says nationally close
to
90-percent of the cases being
diagnosed have been influenza
"A" strains --
which she adds are covered by
this year's supply of flu
vaccine...But
Bobovnyik also tells me a third
of those who die never make to a
hospital -- urging
parents to seek help quickly if
their sick children take a turn
for the worse -- even if
they have already seen a doctor
and been sent home..
YOU KNOW YOUR KID..SO BE THE
ADVOCATE AND SAY 'I KNOW ALL
THE LAB WORK IS GOOD''BUT THIS
IS NOT RIGHT..THIS IS NOT MY
KID'..YOU
KNOW..MAKE THEM STOP AND TAKE A
SECOND LOOK.
It may just save a life...Gerry
