The Transport Secretary has claimed there's "nothing wrong" with giving a Brexit ship contract to a firm with no ships

 B.  He made the bizarre excuse despite Seaborne Freight being expected to run emergency ferries if there's no deal, keeping supplies of essential goods flowing into the UK, in just three months' time

The Tory Cabinet minister also called Seaborne a "small business", despite the size and importance of the contract

Seaborne was announced as one of three lines to operate services between Kent's port of Ramsgate and the continent in the event of a no-deal departure

But it quickly emerged it had no vessels and had never previously run a ferry service, despite winning the £13

8million contract. Brexit: £13m contract for emergency ferries handed to firm with NO SHIPS Shameless Tory Chris Grayling blames rail STAFF for eye-watering train fare rise    Mr Grayling claimed: "I make no apologies for supporting a new British business

"I don't think there's anything wrong in the Government supporting small business

"  He insisted ministers "looked very carefully at this business" and the contract was "tightly-drawn-up" so they'd have to deliver

He told the BBC: "They will be on track to run ferries in April

This is something we haven't plucked from thin air

"  He added: "I don't see any problem in supporting a new British business

"  The contract was revealed last week by the BBC

Tory councillor Paul Messenger questioned the contract, saying: "It has no ships and no trading history so how can due diligence be done?  "Why choose a company that never moved a single truck in their entire history and give them £14 million? I don't understand the logic of that

"  Mr Grayling shot back: "I am not quite sure what an individual Conservative councillor would be able to tell us"

Seaborne was set up two years ago and has been in negotiations about running freight ferries between Ramsgate and Ostend, but no services are currently running

And narrow berths in the port mean there are few suitable commercial vessels available

In a statement, the company said it had been working since 2017 on plans to reintroduce ferry sailings from Ramsgate from early 2019

The business has been "financed by the shareholders" during a development phase involving "locating suitable vessels, making arrangements with the ports of Ostend and Ramsgate, building the infrastructure - such as bunkering - as well as crewing the ferries once they start operating"

It added: "It was intended to start the service in mid-February but this has now been delayed until late March for operational reasons

"This coincides with the Department for Transport's Freight Capacity Purchase Agreement with Seaborne which is part of their preparations to increase ferry capacity in the unlikely event of a no-deal Brexit

"  But Lib Dem home affairs spokesman Sir Ed Davey said it "pretty much sums up their farcical approach to the entire Brexit fiasco

MAKING A RUN FOR IT: A Dash For The Timber by Frederic Remington - Duration: 2:59.

In the late 19th century the world was captivated by the subject of the American West.

This was the era of the Western dime novel...

which nourished the public's interest in cowboys, outlaws, cavalry

soldiers, and Indians that populated the untamed frontier. But it was artists like

Frederick Remington that gave the West its visual substance.

Though born in Canton, New York in 1861, Remington nonetheless had strong bloodlines to the

American West. His great-grandfather was a saddle maker. Another relative, George

Catlin was a noted Indian portraitist. He was also cousin to a Eliphalet Remington,

founder of the Remington firearms company.

As a young man Remington spent several years out west making sketches, collecting artifacts

taking photographs and amassing a visual reference from which he would draw for

the rest of his life. This early work, "A Dash For The Timber" helped launch his career.

Measuring approximately 7 x 4 feet, it is a visual tour de force, depicting a group of cowboys

being pursued by a band of Indians. The youngest man has been shot...

barely hanging in the saddle with the help of men on either side. The rest of the Cowboys are returning fire.

A simple premise but there are so many elements that make this painting a true wonder

Just the scale of the work puts you there on the scene.

The attention to detail is also truly amazing. The man's blood-stained shirt, his foot out of the stirrup.

The foam from the horse's mouth, the frying-pan flying around on the pack horse.

And how about this bit of dust kicked up from a stray Indian bullet.

Throughout his life Remington wanted to be recognized as an artist and not just and illustrator.

And with the passage of time his work has transcended into the realm of fine art.

Unbelievable Facts About What Innovation Can Do for the Visually Impaired - Valuer - Duration: 3:06.

I'm Liron Rosenbaum director of business development at OrCam technologies from

Israel Jerusalem. We are almost 200 employees 150 of them

are working for the research and development department and all the rest are

sales, accounting and legal. The mentality is of a start-up, you know,

the company is very young and fresh and if you come to our offices we look

very startup-wise, but we are already in the market for the last three years,

with the commercial product.

So this is the OrCam MyEye. It's an assisting

technology for visually impaired and blind and an artificial vision device.

It's a smart camera in front, with two LED lamps that start when light

conditions are poor, there is a touch bar to operate the device, microUSB in the

back, high-definition speaker, on and off button and two magnets that can be

snapped to any pair of glasses using this magnetic mount and the wear is

using it like this, it's a wearable device. And it's the most advanced

artificial device for visually impaired, blind, dyslexic and people with reading fatigue.

Just an example I have a book here the only thing I need to do is

point at the text [the device reads the text] and then the device reads for me. It identifies the finger

gesture to start reading and, to stop reading, I just need to put my hand in

front and it stops automatically. There is also a way to start trigger reading

by pressing the side of the device.

[He shows how the device works]

So it reads from top-left to right-down, all the way through the page.

You can stop it from here. There is also automatic text detection

so if I will hold the book in front of the device it will identify that there

is text and it will start reading it automatically. Another feature that we

have is face recognition so I can teach the device to identify you for example.

[He shows how the device works. The device implements "face recognition" feature. The device says: "A young man is in front of you"].

OrCam MyEye can also identify products but we also have a database of barcodes and it

identifies the difference between the barcodes and tell you which product you

are holding. So, for example, if I would point at the barcode.

[He shows another example with barcode recognition. The device mentions the name of the cookies]

OrCam MyEye can also tell you the time, just by showing him this part of your hand, doing this gesture. So i'm doing like this

[He shows how the device can read the time and date from a wristwatch]

And we can also identify and recognize the difference between money notes

[The device reads the denomination of the banknote: "Ten dollars"]

Ten dollars!

Journalist's comparison of Coutinho & Shaqiri in 2018/19 speaks volumes for Liverpool - Duration: 4:15.

Not everybody was convinced when Liverpool decided to sign Xherdan Shaqiri last summer

Everybody from fans on Twitter to Sky Sports' Gary Neville expressed their skepticism, but Shaqiri has taken all of four months to prove them wrong this season

His transfer fee of £13.5 million from Stoke City is starting to look like a real bargain and the Swiss international has proven more than back-up for Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah

He has played deeper in the midfield, delivering incisive passes into final third and still appears with important goals of his own

There are even tentative suggestions from Liverpool fans that he could go on to replace Philippe Coutinho, an unlikely thought just a few months ago

Coutinho criticised in Barcelona  And when you consider the questions being raised about Coutinho in Barcelona, the claims starts to look more and more justified

Liverpool fans recently found an intriguing Barcelona forum that saw supporters heavily criticising Coutinho and even suggesting they should have signed Christian Eriksen instead

So, how do Shaqiri and Coutinho actually compare at their respective clubs this season?  Shaqiri vs Coutinho  Well, that's a question that journalist Connor Dunn tried to solve in the Liverpool Echo this week and his comparison makes for very interesting reading

"The Swiss attacker has been nothing short of superb when he has graced the pitch for Liverpool so far," Dunn reflected in his article

"He has played in nine matches - coming on as substitute six times - and scored six times while also providing two assists

"A creative spark that Liverpool were crying out for in Coutinho's absence appears to have arrived and it makes for excellent reading when you look at how the Brazilian is performing for Barcelona so far this season

"The £142m-man has played in the same number of games in La Liga as Shaqiri has in the Premier League - though has had an extra 120 minutes on the pitch - but only scored four times and provided one assist

"That looks like great and the reading gets better when you realise that Coutinho signed for Liverpool in January 2012 and played in 12 matches over the course of the season - scoring three times while providing five assists

"Well, there's really no debating it then.  Not only is Shaqiri completely outperforming Coutinho this season, but he's made a better start to life at Liverpool than the Brazilian did back in 2013

Dunn does concede that Coutinho was a younger player when he moved to Merseyside, yet that can't take away from Shaqiri's superb achievements in very little game-time

It's certainly reassuring for Liverpool fans to hear because this time in 2018, there was real frustration at the prospect of Coutinho leaving the club

He remains a superb player and would have been a major asset for Liverpool this season but Shaqiri is currently ensuring he isn't missed, too much

Who do you think has performed the best this season - Coutinho or Shaqiri? Have your say in the comments section below

It's 2019! Time for a clear-out?! - Duration: 3:51.

It's 2019! Happy New Year everybody! I love the New Year because I think it's

a great time to take stock of everything in your life, not only your dreams

and ambitions but also like literal things, so I'm going to have a massive

clear-out. One of my new year's resolutions is to live a slightly less

cluttered life so I'm having a clear out. I think it's really good for

you not only in terms of actually making some space in your life in a kind of

physical sense but also a mental sense, I think it's good. It can be quite

stressful living with lots of clutter so I think it's good for you in that sense

but I think it's also a great thing if you're then able to donate those goods

to charity because charity shops make up a huge proportion of the income

that's generated for it for charities so at Demelza it makes up a great amount of

the funds that goes towards paying our health care assistants and nurses,

the facilities upkeep and maintenance, so it really does help your

donated goods are a 'donation' to us and help us to do the great work at Demelza.

So if you're considering donating some goods and having a clear-out like myself,

well done! Brownie points! We have got a link up above and that will show you

where our shops are so you can donate your goods at the shops or there is

a a donation shed in our Sittingbourne hospice so do check that out if you're

looking to donate. I also have a link above for what can and can't be donated

we do accept most things but there are one or two exceptions so for example you

might not expect this but knitted children's toys and clothes we are not

allowed to resell them if they don't have a CE mark on them and of course

we don't want anybody's hard work having to go into the bin so please don't

donate knitted children's toys or clothes. Adults clothes are fine,

but yeah that's a random one. Or you know things like if you happen to

have an ivory tusk lying around or a giraffe skin handbag, we won't sell

those on either, so you can keep those... but otherwise you know even if

it's just tatty old clothes, if it's ripped or stained, we can still sell

those on for rag and that will generate income for us. Obviously we do prefer

it if you've got some luxury branded goods or just really nice

good quality clothing because obviously that will then sell more in the shops

and create more money for for spending on the children at Demelza, so things

like ladies wear, like skirts, dresses handbags, they all sell very well and we

are always in need of those but there's lots of different things. I've

got a link up above you can check that out. I did ask what

the weirdest thing that was ever donated but the operations manager said

it wasn't appropriate for social media so I'll leave that one out! I'll leave that

up to your imaginations! We have had for example, just before Christmas, we had

an old Bible donated and that managed to raise nine hundred pounds for us so

we get some incredible things donated to us and we're really

really appreciative of it so if you are considering having a clear-out please

please check out the links above and send some donated goods to Demelza and

I hope you have a fabulous 2019!

Preoperative Considerations for Cataract Surgery - Episode 12 - Duration: 4:06.

For the cataract surgery patient,

it's important

to prepare the patient for success with cataract surgery by making sure that they understand their options.

As cataracts progress, a slow reduction in visual acuity occurs

resulting from increasing lens opacification.

But visual acuity utilizing high contrast targets

only tell part of the story.

A number of our patients with cataracts have a much more difficult time driving in the evening

because of excessive glare, and require more light when they read.

It's important to educate patients on how their cataracts progress

in order to prepare them for what to expect

as their cataracts get worse.

Optometry is truly the first touch point for most patients when the decision is made to proceed with cataract surgery.

Usually, this occurs when the vision is 20/40 or worse.

Exceptions to this rule can be made

for those with better Snellen acuity

but significant reduction in functionality.

So it's incumbent upon optometry

to be at the forefront

of understanding the options available for our patients.

Years ago, simply telling patients

that they needed cataract surgery and referring them to a cataract surgeon was enough.

But today, there are a variety of lens options for a patients that has truly evolved

into an opportunity

that provides patients greater refractive freedoms.

Toric intraocular lenses

are now available to correct up to 4 diopters of refractive cylinder,

which is a significant  advancement in the recent years.

It's rotated into place by the surgeon

to the patient's exact specifications.

Additionally,

advances in multifocal and intraocular lenses provide even greater options

for a refractive correction of our patients.

There are two large categories of multifocal intraocular lenses –

those that are apodized

and those that are accommodative.

Apodized lenses provide diffractive optics that simultaneously focus both distance

and near optics on the retina.

It additionally changes the percentage of those optics that enter the eye based on the size of the pupil,

providing a truly intelligent design.

Accommodating intraocular lenses

move anteriorly through the ciliary body contraction.

This provide patients additional power for near vision

through the movement of the lens.

With the apodized diffractive intraocular lens,

don't be surprised if the lenses aren't center in the pupil.

As you know because of angle kappa,

many individuals don't view the world through the center of the pupil but rather through a region

that is nasal to the center of the pupil.

Because of this fact,

most surgeons will attempt to center the apodized lens over the patient's line of sight.

So don't be surprised, as this seen in this picture,

if the center of the lens

is nasally displaced in the pupil.

Make sure to take the time to educate your patient about cataract progression

so they truly know what to expect.

Understand

the intraocular lens options that are available for your patients

and

understand what to expect with multifocal lens placement.

Ultimately, this will optimize our patients visual outcomes and enhance their lives,

which is

ultimately why we do what we do.

Dhananjay's experience: From Dubai to Delhi for Labour & Delivery - Duration: 1:34.

We are based in Dubai and we came down to Delhi looking for a great hospital where we

could have our first child.

The ideology of going more with normal delivery rather than with c-secs because that was very

important for me.

I didn't want to, you know, just go to a hospital where just so that they can make an extra

buck they just suggest a c-sec so that was again, one of the big criteria for me to select

this particular hospital.

Though this hospital was not the closest.

We are based out of Dwarka in Delhi and so this is not a short distance but knowing the

fact that the baby does not happen in a snap.

Distances don't matter, and end of the day you have to be in the best hands as possible.

It was a very calming effect for both of us, that everyone knew what they were upto.

They were very solid, very clear in what they were doing, with Tariqa or with the baby.

So yeah, it was a brilliant experience.

Have that faith in your doctor, have that faith in their abilities because they are

extremely experienced.

They come from a very very prominent brand.

They've done this a long, long time.

So have that trust.

At the end of it, be next to your partner, because she needs that support.
