Weaving together all the bits and bobs
that make up the story of performance
can be a real challenge, structuring it
in a coherent way so people understand
what you're talking about, you know it
can be a nightmare. Personally when I'm
faced with that kind of challenge I turn
to the business model. I think it
provides a really helpful framework for
providing coherent thread through the
outside world to internal processes to
outputs, outcomes, impacts. It also
provides a rationale for the KPIs that
you choose to report. Furthermore it can
offer a nice consistent framework for
reporting at the segmental level all
jolly handy so business model definitely
your friend. Of course nothing in the
world is quite that straightforward
there are some challenges, not least if a
business has more than one business
model. In that kind of situation I would
always advise management to report as
many business models as it can, in practice
that can fall down if you've got a
business that has many a plethora of
business models under, under the group. In
that situation focus on the material and
never forget to provide the business
model at the group level. Why does the
group exist? What does it do? What does it
not do? How does it create value? In short
use the business model it can be your
friend,
it can take your report from being good
to really making it stand out from the
rest.
