"You need tons of gear to write good music"

That would be a myth

we come across a lot..

I've certainly use the excuse before

And that is I can't make a good track my tracks don't sound as good as they should

because i don't own the right sample library or I need a new computer

or my compressor or my reverb or whatever

And yeah that's true, I mean, you do have to have good equipment

for your stuff not to sound like crap, but

I personally know John has heard some people

do incredible stuff on a laptop with a pair of headphones

so it's not like you have to have a hundred thousand dollars of gears

to make a good sound

You just have to find a way to express yourself

get the ideas that are in your head out into a format

where somebody else can listen and then you can talk

then you can share then you can collaborate

But don't ever let the gear or lack thereof

being excuse as to why not producing music

So i'm in 8th grade and we're doing a field trip

and we're on a bus

I think we're going to Disneyland, we're going to some fun places

and I'm hearing...

There's a radio playing and it was a very first time

I've ever heard it heard yes - Roundabout

and I've never heard anything like this in my life

It just blew me away

Musically it was something that was just like it redefined music for me

and I remember coming home that night

and I was literally I was done, you're done, I'm quitting

There's no way, I mean, I thought was here

and I just heard something that went all the way up to here

And the next morning when I got up

I thought "No you're not, you're not done you're not done at all"

It was like, and then it was like I heard the rocky theme

you know, it just means that

wow the bar has just been raised for me personally

and yes - roundabout was one of the songs

that I heard that said you can raise the bar

Around that same time

I realized that how much excuses

can really bind the creative process

Because there are limits so it's what you're saying is

"My music can't reach his potential because of some external factors

and really that's not what music is about at all

It's not about set of techniques, It's not about gear,

it's all about somebody expressing themselves

in a way that evokes an emotion and tells the story

Yeah and so at that point I had resolved

I'm never going to make an excuse again

and I'm going to look for those songs

like "Bohemian rhapsody" and "Roundabout"

that very early on in my life put that seed of music

and just be amazing and really raised the bar
