In today's episode we will meet you with the winners of the Extreme class of Balkan Offroad Rallye last year.
Franck Durell and Francoise Hollender have something more than a simple driver-navigator connection.
They are together to win in life and in the race and their brilliant tactic and desire for the first place
allowed them to be on the highest step of the podium last summer. What is the common between
Frank, Francoise and an ambulance and why the RBI rallies are so important for them? You will find out in the next minutes.
Hello, I am Francoise of Euro 4x4 Parts and here is... Franck Daurelle de Mandubien Group.
It's year now that we race together, and its been many years that I am in the 4x4 world.
Because I founded the company Euro 4x4 parts, and it's now been 16 years. Since 2012 at Breslau Balkan, we
met each other there and we are now together. We met each other in the Balkan in 2012.
Actually we met each other in the ambulance, in the ambulance for the medical check-up.
Franck was in the group and the German doctor did not speak very good English. So in the end I was
there to translate the basic first aid instructions to the group of Frenchmen who were there.
That is how we met each other. For the rest of the rally we circled around each other,
I was keeping an eye out for him and he was keeping an eye out for me and at the end of the rally...
I got shouted at by my co-driver because I wasn't there.
At the end of the rally we decided to see each other again, and 3 weeks later we saw each other again in Avignon.
We decided that it was good and we should go further together. And since we not only got into a relationship
but we also decided to share our passion and to do competitions together.
Since 2012 we have done 8 competitions together, the Balkan Offroad Rallye, the Croatia Trophy, the Transilvania. Each time with a lot
of complicity, of course some time in the car we share some bad words but we complete each other and with Franck's
good driving skills and me over the years I improved and got better with the navigation. And the results
are here because we won the Balkan Rallye in 2016 with a big lead in front of the second car, some good notes.
Just like in an orchestra, we had a good car, and everything fell into place and made this nice music
We have to feel good and be curious of what will happen during the day and to have... I don't know how to say it.
When we start a day we try and be focused, to get rid off all the outside problems, to make sure the car is good.
We have to clear our minds, because if we have our minds thinking about work or a personal issue, it is not possible.
The race requires all our capacities, our full attention and concentration. When we start a day we don't try to anticipate what will happen.
When we prepare the road book, we can anticipate a bit for the difficult sections that we will get.
But generally we do one thing at a time, we start with the road book and go through it slowly
and when we get to the end and we say "Oh, its already finished" or even sometimes
"Oh, we are only half way". It has happened.
It's a magical race. The landscape has everything. Water, sand, rocks, everything. It is a real race.
It is the most complete race we know. The nature, the landscape, the organization is top. It has developed to a perfect level,
I don't know many other races at this level. Chapeau to the organizers. Some races are more difficult than others.
The Balkan Offroad Rallye 2016 was especially tough. It was not because the terrain was insuperable,
but the stages of 200 kilometers are very long. And the race takes 8 days. All 8 days of concentration, to keep the car
running in perfect condition, for the pilot and copilot to stay focused it is not easy to do.
You have to work together as a team, to have the motivation and determination to continue and to keep your balance
and keep cooperating even when you get very tired.
You have to keep each other focused.
As for the navigation, it is a special experience. The Breslau is definitely the race with the most difficult navigation.
Special is the navigation on cap, with long distances where you have to find your own way and read the terrain.
It is a bit of a gamble to find the right track but you learn how to read the landscape and find your way.
You have to read the lines in the mountains to find your way, and sometimes you have to go back
and make a big loop to find your track.
It's different, sometimes there is no track. There are trees blocking the way. You are alone, there is no track and you have to
see carefully the changes in the soil to find the route.
When you are first there is a force that pushes you. If you have a lot in front of you, you are reminded
about this all the time by their tracks. When you are first, you do it alone.
We stayed in the front, but we did not force it. We constantly observed the others, observation was the key here.
Franck pays a lot of attention to Roland Brack and Carmen, who are exceptional. They are always on the podium, but never in front.
They don't race like that, but they are always careful, always sure of their choices. They deserve their success because
they have a good strategy. We pay a lot of attention to the way they race, even though it is not Franck's strategy.
But with the time we have learned you don't need to be the first all the time to have a good result.
There is no perfect recipe, everyone has a chance. But you need tires of the best quality, strong axles,
you need to be able to go through deep water. And you need a good security, a good roll cage and good seats.
You have to read the lines in the mountains to find your way, and sometimes
you have to go back and make a big loop to find your track.
You need a light car, with a winch and differential locks. Look at Roland Black, he has a simple robust vehicle and a lot of experience.
You don't need all the horsepower. Martin Haehle for example has a very powerful car, but you only see the difference
when you are driving in a straight line. We can really say 'bye bye' to him as he speeds away from us.
But in the forest or on the tough terrain we have a lot of torque from the engine and an advantage over his car.
We, as an example, when we are on a race we take 2 weeks completely for us.
These are two weeks of disconnection. We look for two weeks in the bivouac, to enjoy the day and the evening together
and with everyone who is there. The life of the bivouac is important for us, much more important than comfort. To meet people
who share our passion, to race together. This is important. There is no rivalry in the bivouac. There is a great atmosphere and
we cheer for each others successes. We look for this great atmosphere. Last year we were second behind Martin Haehle,
who is respected throughout the scene. Everyone has their own team and vehicle,
and we respect each other and we are happy to race together.
