Hey Guys, HDvee here!
Now, we've covered quite a few videos on the Pokemon Anime's protagonist Ash Ketchum,
but there's still so many more questions surrounding this young Pokemon trainer, and
one of the biggest is something that we'll be taking a look at in today's video, just
exactly how old is Ash Ketchum?
Ash Ketchum has been on our TV screens for nearly twenty years, and seeing that he started
out as a ten year old Pokemon trainer when he set out on his journey, he should be coming
up to his thirtieth birthday sometime soon, but of course, this isn't the case, so what
is Ash Ketchum's actual age?
In today's video we'll be taking a look at all of the evidence that i've come across,
multiple fan theories that make a lot of sense, and just general facts about the anime that
may help us figure out this pretty annoying question.
Of course this is all my own opinion at the end of the day, and whether you agree with
me or not after watching the video is entirely up to you, but if you think you have a better
idea of what Ash Ketchum's age really is, then please leave it in the comment section
below, after watching the video, i'd love to see everyone's ideas on this topic because
it is a really interesting one!
With all of the introductions out of the way, let's get into the video and try and figure
out this nearly twenty year old mystery.
Now, Ash began his journey at exactly ten years, ten months, and ten days old as confirmed
in the novelization of the show, making him almost eleven at that time the first ever
episode, I Choose You, aired in Japan on April first, nineteen ninety seven.
This would mean that in the Black and White anime series, Ash would be no older than thirteen
going on fourteen, a prime age for many young men to experience their growth spurts, hence
his new height in X/Y, and it would also explain why he is so short in comparison to N, as
an Article in the magazine PASH! estimates N to be about twenty years old and is five
foot eleven inches.
Naturally, a still developing thirteen year old would appear dwarfed next to a fully grown
man of twenty.
However, during the first episode of the Unova Region titled In the Shadow Of Zekrom, it
states that Ash Ketchum is still only ten years old, so what is exactly going on here
with this young Pokemon trainer?
Now as a bit of a side thing, I wanted to defend Ash's forgetfulness of Pokemon he already
knows and his reliance on the Pokedex.
Pokemon knowledge in Ash's world would be similar to math or science in ours, constantly
present and taught in school.
So given how natural a Bulbasaur is in his world, Ash naturally would not know everything
about it just because he's used one.
Ash is still young and has been taking in a lot of new information at a breakneck speed
throughout his travels, so it makes perfect sense that he would on occasion need a refresher
on how things work even if he's used it in the past.
Besides Dexter already told us he wasn't the brightest back in episode one.
Now, Ash has just started his travels in the Alola Region in the newest series of Pokemon
which is the Pokemon Sun and Moon Anime.
As stated earlier, Ash should be now looking to be around thirty years old, but the new
art style for the Anime makes him look even younger, and to me, this definitely doesn't
look like a man in his thirties.
So, if you're still with me, you're probably asking why Ash Ketchum is still ten years
old, well luckily for us, there's a handful of fan theories out there that give some pretty
good reasoning behind one of Pokemon's biggest mysteries.
The first theory, and perhaps the most well known one, is the coma theory.
According to this Creepypasta-inspired theory, during the first episodes of the Pokemon anime,
Ash is accidentally electrocuted by one of Pikachu's attacks, and he then slipped into
a coma.
The Coma Theory explains some of the basics from the series.
It answers the question as to why Ash never physically ages, and it also explains why
there are Nurse Joys and Officer Jennys throughout the region, and it also explains why children
are sent off on journeys throughout the Pokemon world without adult supervision.
It also explains that characters like Brock or Misty were actually figments of his coma-induced
imagination, and it also states that Brock represented his sexuality, and because Ash
never knew what sex was, this was the answer as to why Brock never became involved with
any of the women he tried to woo.
Misty's only in his dreams because she was based on a girl that Ash knew in real life
prior to his accident, and he simply added her there.
Giovanni was supposed to be Ash's father, and he's represented as villainous in his
imagination because Giovanni had disowned him for his supposed sexuality, and Jessie
and James were supposed to represent his purity since they were at that time the only Team
Rocket members who wore white outfits rather than the typical black outfits.
Ash's partner, Pikachu, was also supposed to represent Ash's humanity whenever he would
get lost from him in an episode.
The theory also notes that if Ash ever did wake up from his coma, he could most likely
suffer brain damage from his accident, and that he'll have to live with the fact that
none of his accomplishments in life actually happened, and that none of his friends were
actually real.
So as you can see, this theory has some pretty good reasoning and evidence to back it up,
and could definitely explain why Ash Ketchum never ages in the anime.
Then again though, Pokemon is mainly targeted towards children, and having things based
off of sex and things like that isn't something that you would associate with a kids program,
so maybe this theory is one for the older viewers.
Still though, this theory makes a lot of sense to me, but let's look over some others that
i've come across.
The next theory is known as the Ho-oh theory.
This theory suggests his encounter with Ho-oh in the very first episode of Pokémon imbued
him with the ability to live forever.
Let's take a look at the HeartGold and SoulSilver Pokedex entry of Ho-oh to find out more.
Poké fan theorists took this to mean that Ash has gained eternal happiness, and what
makes Ash happy?
Well, being on a Pokémon journey of course.
Ergo, Ash is always ten years old.
However, this doesn't explain why all of the people Ash knows such as Brock, Misty
and even his Mum don't age either, unless his wish was for everyone to stop ageing altogether,
but that's reading a little too much into everything.
The last theory we'll be taking a look at in today's video is taken from the first Pokemon
movie, Mewtwo Strikes Back.
Forget comas, forget eternal happiness, and forget the ridiculous notion that the entire
Pokémon story happens over one year.
This last theory really tries to answer this super annoying question.
During their fight, Mew and Mewtwo Annihilate Ash with their psychic blasts, essentially
killing him and turning him to stone.
Everyone thinks Ash is dead, that is until all of the Pokémon and their clones all begin
to cry and their tears resurrect Ash.
Mewtwo sees the error of his ways, wipes everyone's memory and teleports everyone off the island.
Happy days.
There's something that really jumps out here about this though.
Ash is turned to stone.
He's petrified.
A statue, basically "frozen in time."
The debate of whether he actually dies or not is a different discussion entirely, but
I believe he does indeed kick the bucket.
When he's revived it's like nothing happened.
But what if he's still "frozen in time?"
Sure he can breathe, he can walk, he can talk, he can lose every single main Pokémon League
he's competed in, and so by all extensive purposes he is alive.
But he doesn't age.
We know he doesn't age because the narrator tells us he's ten multiple times.
Yet we also know that time passes in the Pokémon universe.
Periods of time are mentioned on numerous occasions and Ash and Pikachu even celebrate
their one Year Anniversary of travelling together in the Pikachu and Pichu mini-movie.
So, the core of this theory is: Ash's body is still frozen after being turned to stone,
not physically aging, but still very much alive.
All because the incredible Psychic powers of Mew and Mewtwo – arguably two of the
most powerful Pokémon alive – collide in an awesome explosion with Ash at the centre.
All that immense Psychic energy… something freaky was bound to happen!
Obviously at the end of the day, the most obvious reasoning behind Ash Ketchum still
being ten years old in the anime is because the main target audience is kids, and it wouldn't
really be aimed at them if they were watching a thirty odd year old Pokemon trainer running
around collecting gym badges, it just wouldn't make that much sense, but it's still fun
to take a deeper look into these kinds of things to try and connect the dots!
But with that, wraps up this video.
I really hope you enjoyed it as much as i did making it!
