As US President Donald Trump proceeds to destabilise the postwar global economic order, much of
the world is collectively holding its breath.
Commentators search for words to describe his assault on conventional norms of leadership
and tolerance in a modern liberal democracy.
The mainstream media, faced with a president who might sometimes be badly uninformed and
yet really believes what he is saying, hesitate to label conspicuously false statements as
lies.
But some would argue that beneath the chaos and bluster, there is an economic rationale
to the Trump administration�s disorderly retreat from globalisation.
According to this view, the US has been duped into enabling China�s ascendency, and one
day Americans will come to regret it.
We economists tend to view abdication of US world leadership as a historic mistake.
It is important to acknowledge that the roots of the anti-globalisation movement in the
United States run much deeper than disenfranchised blue-collar workers.
For example, some economists opposed the Trans-Pacific Partnership (a 12-country trade deal that
would have covered 40% of the global economy) on the questionable grounds that it would
have harmed American workers.
It fact, the TPP would have opened Japan far more than it would have affected the US.
Rejecting it only opens the door to Chinese economic dominance across the Pacific.
US populists, perhaps inspired by the writings of Thomas Piketty, seem unimpressed by the
fact that globalisation has lifted hundreds of millions of desperately poor people in
China and India into the global middle class.
The liberal view of Asia�s rise is that it makes the world a fairer and more just
place, where a person�s economic fate does not depend quite so much on where they happen
to have been born.

But a more cynical view permeates populist logic, namely that in its excessive adherence
to globalism, the US has sown the seeds of its own political and economic destruction.
Trumpism taps into this sense of national mortality; here is someone who thinks he can
do something about it.
The aim is not just to �bring home� American jobs, but to create a system that will extend
US dominance.
�We should focus on our own� is the mantra of Trump and others.
Unfortunately, with this attitude, it is hard to see how America can maintain the world
order that has benefited it so much for so many decades.
And make no mistake: America has been the big winner.
No other large country is nearly as rich, and the US middle class is still very well
off by global standards.

Yes, Democratic Presidential candidate Bernie Sanders was right that Denmark is a great

He might have mentioned, however, that Denmark is a relatively homogeneous country of 5.6
million people with a very low tolerance for immigration.
For better or for worse, the globalisation train has long since left the station, and
the idea that one can turn it back is utterly naive.
Whatever might have been done differently before US President Richard Nixon visited
China in 1972 is no longer possible.
The fate of China, and its role in the world, is now in the hands of the Chinese and their

If the Trump administration thinks it can reset the clock by starting a trade war with
China, it is as likely to accelerate China�s economic and military development as it is
to slow it down.
So far, the Trump administration has only sparred with China, concentrating its early
anti-trade rhetoric on Mexico.
Although the North American Free Trade Agreement (Nafta), which Trump reviles, has likely had
only modest effects on US trade and jobs, he has attempted to humiliate Mexicans insisting
that they pay for his border wall, as if Mexico were a US colony.
The US is ill-advised to destabilise its Latin American neighbours.
In the near term, Mexican institutions should prove quite robust; but in the long run, Trumpism,
by encouraging anti-American sentiment, will undermine leaders otherwise sympathetic to
US interests.
If the Trump administration tries such crude tactics with China, it will be in for a rude
surprise.
China has financial weapons, including trillions of dollars of US debt.
A disruption of trade with China could lead to massive price increases in the low-cost
stores � for example, Wal-Mart and Target � on which many Americans rely.
Moreover, huge swaths of Asia, from Taiwan to India, are vulnerable to Chinese aggression.
For the moment, China�s military is relatively weak and would likely lose a conventional
war with the US; but this situation is rapidly evolving, and China may soon have its own
aircraft carriers and other more advanced military capabilities.
The US cannot �win� a trade war with China, and any victory will be pyrrhic.
The US needs to negotiate hard with China to protect its friends in Asia and deal with
the rogue state of North Korea.
And the best way to get the good deals Trump says he seeks is to pursue a more open trade
policy with China, not a destructive trade war.

I was diagnosed with depression before I was even diagnosed with bipolar disorder.

High above Earth�s atmosphere, electrons whiz past at close to the speed of light.
Such ultrarelativistic electrons, which make up the outer band of the Van Allen radiation
belt, can streak around the planet in a mere five minutes, bombarding anything in their
path. Exposure to such high-energy radiation can wreak havoc on satellite electronics,
and pose serious health risks to astronauts. Now researchers at MIT, the University of
Colorado, and elsewhere have found there�s a hard limit to how close ultrarelativistic
electrons can get to the Earth. The team found that no matter where these electrons are circling
around the planet�s equator, they can get no further than about 11,000 kilometers from
the Earth�s surface � despite their intense energy.
What�s keeping this high-energy radiation at bay seems to be neither the Earth�s magnetic
field nor long-range radio waves, but rather a phenomenon termed �plasmaspheric hiss�
� very low-frequency electromagnetic waves in the Earth�s upper atmosphere that, when
played through a speaker, resemble static, or white noise.
Based on their data and calculations, the researchers believe that plasmaspheric hiss
essentially deflects incoming electrons, causing them to collide with neutral gas atoms in
the Earth�s upper atmosphere, and ultimately disappear. This natural, impenetrable barrier
appears to be extremely rigid, keeping high-energy electrons from coming no closer than about
2.8 Earth radii � or 11,000 kilometers from the Earth�s surface.
�It�s a very unusual, extraordinary, and pronounced phenomenon,� says John Foster,
associate director of MIT�s Haystack Observatory. �What this tells us is if you parked a satellite
or an orbiting space station with humans just inside this impenetrable barrier, you would
expect them to have much longer lifetimes. That�s a good thing to know.�
Foster and his colleagues, including lead author Daniel Baker of the University of Colorado,
have published their results this week in the journal Nature.
Shields up The team�s results are based on data collected
by NASA�s Van Allen Probes � twin crafts that are orbiting within the harsh environments
of the Van Allen radiation belts. Each probe is designed to withstand constant radiation
bombardment in order to measure the behavior of high-energy electrons in space.
The researchers analyzed the first 20 months of data returned by the probes, and observed
an �exceedingly sharp� barrier against ultrarelativistic electrons. This barrier
held steady even against a solar wind shock, which drove electrons toward the Earth in
a �step-like fashion� in October 2013. Even under such stellar pressure, the barrier
kept electrons from penetrating further than 11,000 kilometers above Earth�s surface.
To determine the phenomenon behind the barrier, the researchers considered a few possibilities,
including effects from the Earth�s magnetic field and transmissions from ground-based
radios. For the former, the team focused in particular
on the South Atlantic Anomaly � a feature of the Earth�s magnetic field, just over
South America, where the magnetic field strength is about 30 percent weaker than in any other
region. If incoming electrons were affected by the Earth�s magnetic field, Foster reasoned,
the South Atlantic Anomaly would act like a �hole in the path of their motion,�
allowing them to fall deeper into the Earth�s atmosphere. Judging from the Van Allen probes�
data, however, the electrons kept their distance of 11,000 kilometers, even beyond the effects
of the South Atlantic Anomaly � proof that the Earth�s magnetic field had little effect
on the barrier. Foster also considered the effect of long-range,
very-low-frequency (VLF) radio transmissions, which others have proposed may cause significant
loss of relatively high-energy electrons. Although VLF transmissions can leak into the
upper atmosphere, the researchers found that such radio waves would only affect electrons
with moderate energy levels, with little or no effect on ultrarelativistic electrons.
Instead, the group found that the natural barrier may be due to a balance between the
electrons� slow, earthward motion, and plasmaspheric hiss. This conclusion was based on the Van
Allen probes� measurement of electrons� pitch angle � the degree to which an electron�s
motion is parallel or perpendicular to the Earth�s magnetic field. The researchers
found that plasmaspheric hiss acts slowly to rotate electrons� paths, causing them
to fall, parallel to a magnetic field line, into Earth�s upper atmosphere, where they
are likely to collide with neutral atoms and disappear.
Mary Hudson, a professor of physics at Dartmouth College, says the data from the Van Allen
probes �are providing remarkably detailed measurements� of the Earth�s radiation
belts and their boundaries. �These new observations confirm, over the
two years since launch of the Van Allen probes, the persistence of this inner boundary, which
places additional constraints on theories of particle acceleration and loss in magnetized
astrophysical systems,� says Hudson, who did not participate in the research.
Seen through �new eyes� Foster says this is the first time researchers
have been able to characterize the Earth�s radiation belt, and the forces that keep it
in check, in such detail. In the past, NASA and the U.S. military have launched particle
detectors on satellites to measure the effects of the radiation belt: NASA was interested
in designing better protection against such damaging radiation; the military, Foster says,
had other motivations. �In the 1960s, the military created artificial
radiation belts around the Earth by the detonation of nuclear warheads in space,� Foster says.
�They monitored the radiation belt changes, which were enormous. And it was realized that,
in any kind of nuclear war situation, this could be one thing that could be done to neutralize
anyone�s spy satellites.� The data collected from such efforts was not
nearly as precise as what is measured today by the Van Allen probes, mainly because previous
satellites were not designed to fly in such harsh conditions. In contrast, the resilient
Van Allen Probes have gathered the most detailed data yet on the behavior and limits of the
Earth�s radiation belt. �It�s like looking at the phenomenon with
new eyes, with a new set of instrumentation, which give us the detail to say, �Yes, there
is this hard, fast boundary,�� Foster says.

So, certainly with the photos you submitted, there is good enough information to allow
me to give you some guidance on how I have a discussion with patients like you in my
practice.
To give you a little bit of background, I'm a Board-certified cosmetic surgeon and Fellowship-trained
oculofacial plastic and reconstructive surgeon.
I've been in practice in Manhattan and Long Island for over 20 years and facial rejuvenation
is a big part of my practice and certainly having people come to see better definition
of facial features, whether it's cheekbone and jawline, neck, is a very common issue.
So in the context of the limited views of your photos, I'll give you first some global
understanding of how I have a discussion with patients and then I'll give you some ideas
of what I've done for people in specific, unique scenarios or actually more common scenarios,
I should say.
So to begin with, we have to think about what is your baseline appearance.
Has this been always an issue for you?
The question is how well-defined has your neck been?
Is this a family trait?
A lot of times people will say that in my family, everyone has got this volume under
their chin or we all have short necks or that type of scenario.
Another circumstance that can affect the definition is physical weight.
Some people tend to gain volume in their cheek area and their neck area.
There are also people who can be fit otherwise but still not have good definition around
this area.
So, I want to help you distinguish a little bit between the difference between tight and
defined.
In your situation, I think that what you want is just better structural definition.
I think that it would be maybe a little bit early for you to have a lifting procedure
and the differentiation there is that in a person who is relatively young, with the procedure
such as something that can define this area such as liposuction, the skin has a tendency
to retract and by reducing fat in some critical areas, you get that definition.
I always explain to patients that a young face is not a tight face and an attractive
face is not a tight face.
It is really about definition.
So if that is basically your intention then I think a very straightforward liposculpting
procedure is beneficial.
And one thing that I would really want you to understand is that fat isn't completely
the enemy.
Fat in the wrong places can be sculpted but it is very important for youthful skin to
have a certain amount of fat just below the skin.
That creates a nice soft youthful look.
One of the unfortunate realities of surgery that's done very aggressively can result
in wrinkling of the skin and aging appearance in the skin.
When you look at a young person, a teenager, a child, someone in their 20's, they have
this nice look of smoothness and softness that is reflective of several things that
are factors but one major factor is often referred to as baby fat.
It is the fat layer that's under skin.
So, I would say in situation like yours, where if you had any plans to lose weight, I would
say reevaluate after the weight loss.
The reason is that a lot of times when people lose weight, they tend to lose weight in their
face and sometimes do their own self-lipo, if you will, by just reducing the fat globally
and they get better definition.
If someone is pretty much close to their weight that they don't have any expectations of
losing weight any time soon, then strategic liposuction can be an option.
We had a patient who was planning to get married in a few months and she was at a certain weight
and that weight wasn't going to change that much in that timeframe and so for her, this
procedure turned out to be perfect.
Liposuction really defined her face, defined her neck in a way that would really work favorably
for her.
So, I think the take home message here is first, is there a more global issue with the
distribution of fat and if so, is there something that you can address holistically with weight
loss?
And two, if that isn't the situation and you are likely to stay at a certain weight
for the long-term or for the next few years then liposuction at this point is likely to
be of value to you.
Meet with qualified, experienced cosmetic surgeons and decide who you are comfortable
with and what scenario you like this done.
