>> NOW, COVERAGE YOU CAN COUNT
ON.
LIVE FROM STUDIO A, THIS IS KSBW
ACTION NEWS EIGHT.
>> GOOD EVENING.
I'M DAN GREEN.
AND I'M ERIN CLARK.
WATER GUSHING DOWN THE MAIN
SPILLWAY AT OROVILLE DAM IN
BUTTE COUNTY TONIGHT.
BUT THE GOOD NEWS, IT'S NOT
COMING OVER THE TOP OF THE
EMERGENCY SPILLWAY ANYMORE.
DAN: THAT REDUCES THE DANGER OF
IT FAILING WHICH WOULD UNLEASH A
WALL OF WATER DOWNSTREAM,
BUT THIS IS WHAT WE KNOW.
CREWS HAVE USED CEMEN AND
BOULDERS TO TRY TO SHORE UP THE
EMERGENCY SPILLWAY.
WATER IS NO LONGER COMING OVER
THE TOP OF THAT.
LAKE LEVELS HAVE DROPPED ABOUT 7
FEET SINCE YESTERDAY THE GOAL IS
-- THEY WANT 50 FEET.
THAT COULD TAKE SEVERAL DAYS.
RIGHT NOW, ABOUT 188,000 PEOPLE
REMAIN UNDER EVACUATION ORDERS.
THAT INCLUDES OROVILLE,
MARYSVILLE AND OTHER LOW-LYING
AREA
EVACUATION CENTERS HAVE BEEN SET
UP FROM CHICO TO SACRAMENTO.
FOR MORE ON WHAT OFFICIALS ARE
SAYING HERE'S ACTION NEWS
EPORTER VICKIE GONZALE
VICKIE: CREWS ARE WORKING TO
REDUCE THE RISK OF FLOOD FOR
THOUSANDS OF HOM IN THE PATH.
>> OUR PRIMARY GOAL IS TO ENSURE
THE SAFETY OF OUR COMMUNITY AND
THE RESIDENTS WE SERVE, AND THAT
IS A BIG STEP TOWARD THAT.
LAKE LEVELS ARE CONTINUING TO
FALL.
>> MORE THAN 24 HOURS AFTER
EMERGENCY EVACUATIONS, THE STATE
IS ANNOUNCING THAT THE RESERVOIR
IS DROPPING TO A MANAGEABLE
LEVEL.
>> OUR OBJECTIVE IS TO LOWER THE
LAKE LEVEL BY 50 FEET IN ORDER
TO PREPARE FOR FUTURE INFLOW DUE
TO STORMS OR PRECIPITATION.
>> BUT PROGRESS IS CHALLENGING
AS CREWS WORKED TO REPAIR THE
PRIMARY SPILLWAY BEFORE ANOTHER
ROUND OF WET WEATHER THIS WEEK.
>> IT IS A FLUID, DYNAMIC
OPERATION.
WHEN YOU TRY TO DEAL WITH MOTHER
NATURE, IT'S HARD TO LOOK AT A
CRYSTAL BALL.
>> 180,000 RESIDENTS ARE
AWAITING THE ALL CLEAR TO RETURN
HOME.
WHAT YOU ARE SEEING BEHIND ME IS
PROGRESS.
AS WATER LEVELS REDUCE AT THE
RESERVOIR, WATER IS RUSHING DOWN
THE RIVER.
MANDATORY EVACUATIONS ARE STILL
IN PLACE.
THE SHERIFF TELLS US AS
DIFFICULT AS IT WAS TO ISSUE THE
ORDERS, IT WILL BE EQUALLY
DIFFICULT TO LIFT THOSE ORDERS.
